You wanna leave more space between the roots and the water, so the plant actually gets oxygen. Furthermore, if the water is exposed to sunlight it will produce algae (as you could see in some of the stock photos). The method you are using is called the kratky method. Good luck growing!

+haveyouseenten Totally agree with you, greenery all the way!! I what a coinkydink I also have an areca palm and guess what it was going exactly the same! But I read up on it a little and it's usually due to under watering, or dry air. Mist the leaves regularly to begin with and if that doesn't help maybe water a little more too. Hope the advice helps!
