  • The limitations that we set for ourselves often fall short of our true potential. How do we transcend limitations? How do we take these perceived ‘weaknesses’ and use them to achieve the things we want most in this world?
Ask Kai Lightner. Since beginning his career, he’s worked to reach beyond preconceived notions of who he is and what he’s capable of.
Kai hopes in the future, when young climbers of color, “...open up that climbing magazine, they see a plethora of black and brown faces looking back at them. Accomplishing great things, and showing them - this path is for you, and this industry is for you as well.”
Reflecting Forward is a film about representation, reflection, and creating a climbing community that works for everyone.

I met Kai in my local gym a couple years ago. He was kind and encouraging and an absolute beast on the wall. I wish him nothing but happiness and success.

Not really, though. In Europe, too, there are underprivileged minorities who you encounter very rarely at the climbing gyms. It's a reality that role models that you can relate too can give you motivation to pick up a sport. I would love if climbing communities all over the world could become places where people from any social class (or migratory group) feel welcome and at home.

Every human has a color, we're not transparent, right? We are all humans. Skin color doesn't matter. Can u elaborate why the color of your skin is so important to you? Don't get it tbh, happy to learn more of your perspective. Nice climbing though.

STFU man. He's a person of colour. Black people have faced decades of oppression in America and around the world. He's highlighting that.

We all have unconscious perceptions (or perceived limits) based upon age, weight, disabilities, race, income status, intellect, ... These perceptions cause many to feel pigeonholed into careers and/or sports, and they often limit our dreams.
For individuals that struggle with "going against the grain" in their communities, role models can give them the small push that they need.
People like Eminem and Marian Anderson did it the highest level, destroying all stereotypes. But the impact of barrier breakers on more local levels, are also very impactful to the average person trying to find their way.

I can count on my hand the number of black climbers i saw in a climbing gym and outdoors. If you can't understand that not feeling represented when you are starting a sport or trying to perform in it is a big thing then what else can i say ...
