  • Serves 3-4:
½ cup (100g) yellow split peas, rinsed and soaked for 30 minutes
    ½ small onion, sliced
    1 garlic clove, peeled
    2-3 tablespoons light olive oil,
    1 teaspoon dried crushed oregano
½ teaspoon of salt, or to taste
    Freshly ground black pepper
Juice of half a lemon, or to taste
    Garnish options:
    ½ teaspoon capers
    1 scallion, finely sliced
    Kalamata olives
Sundried tomatoes, packed in olive oil
    Toasted pine nuts
    Fresh parsley, finely chopped
Drizzle of good quality Greek olive oil
Rinse the split peas with cold water until the water runs clear. Soak at least 30 minutes.
Place the sliced onions, garlic and olive oil in a small pot and cook over high heat until golden. About 5 minutes.
Drain the water from the split peas and add to the pot along with salt, oregano, and black pepper. Pour 2-3 cups hot water over top, bring to a boil and reduce the heat to medium low.
Cook, stirring every few minutes and adding more water (half cup each time) when necessary. Cook until the split peas are soft. About 1 cup of liquid should remain in the pot at the end of cooking.
    Puree the mixture until smooth.
Season with more salt and pepper if desired.
Add the lemon juice and mix to combine.
Garnish with your favorite toppings and serve with vegetables and/or warm bread.
    Enjoy!

Hi Dimitra. Split Pea soup happens to be one of my favorite soups to enjoy so this dip is perfect and so versatile. I can't wait to make some and enjoy it with the fresh veggies which makes the dish so healthy and delicious. Your repertoire of recipes are just scrumptious. I just came back from a 2 week vacation in Greece. I was introduced to fava dip in Santorini and then noticed the dish on menus in Paros and Athens as well. It was delicious and each restaurant had its own twist on it. I knew you’d have a recipe! 😉 It turned out great. I’m glad I made a double batch. Thank you!

Just one suggestion: dependent on the dal, it will foam a lot-then add the spices only after you have let it boil a little and removed the foam.

Gonna try to make this soon. Looks yummy and delicious. Speaking of split pea you brought up for this amazing dip, I'm sorry that this is embarrassing , but my friend had requested me to ask you if you can do a split pea soup recipe because she's sort of illiterate in social networks. Whenever you can, not right now.

Ok, Just saw your delicious hamburger on instagram at your restaurant!!! I’m dying !!!!! I live too far away😞😏My husband and I would be eating at your “ Cafe” so much if we lived in or near Houston dear Dimitra!! He loves the dishes I’ve made from your recipes! Do you make your own hamburger buns too? The buns looked so fresh too!!!😋

I have a good recipe for buns that I will share as soon as I can, but for the restaurant we buy them ready made. I love Whole Food's brand, but they're so expensive! We tried a different vendor today and I wasn't satisfied with them.. Still looking :)

I'm confused, split peas and Fava bean's are two totally different types of legumes, are you suggesting that the cooking process is the same for both?

Hi. May I ask if you have any tips of where and how to buy online Tsipouro to arrive in US or Australia or North Europe ? It would fit perfect with the Fava.

    • @DimitrasDishes
      @DimitrasDishes  6 лет назад

Tsipouro is known as tsikoudia in Crete. I know that people bring it back in their suitcases... lol I think that there is a company in New York/New Jersey that makes it :) All the best!

I love fava, guys it's not split pea, lathouri is a different plant than pea.

    • @dimz796
      @dimz796 4 года назад

It's hard to find lathouri outside of Greece though, that's why she mentions the next best thing.

You are using split peas and calling it a Fava dip! Fava beans are entirely a different beans. Still, dip appears very good.
