    Yellow split pea porridge tastes good. You can cook them with any kind of meat product like smoked chicken or a diced summer sausage to flavor them. It doesn't need to be bacon specifically. I like to add pressed garlic at the very end.

    I also had split pea soup today. I added Marjoram for flavoring. My mother (I’m German) always added it and I love to bring back childhood memories.

    Thank you for sharing your recipe. It looks delish! We used to live on the Central Coast in California and there was a restaurant in Solvang that was famous for its split pea soup. It was Anderson's Split Pea soup. That is the last time I had split pea soup and that was back in the mid 1990's!!! I am looking forward to making this home cooked version. Pam

    One of my favorites! We have used ham, sausage, bacon, and even salt pork in ours. I do have to make sure the carrots are bigger chunks because hubby picks them out lol. He likes egg noodles in his too but I do it separately because I don't.

    Sounds like a wonderful and delicious soup. I am so glad you didn’t use any prepared broth. Seems like so many people use that now. I am 70 years old and I never ever used canned or premade broths in the past neither did my mother and our soups are always wonderful.

    A lot of people have a hard time getting unsliced bacon to dice, the sliced is problematic in a liquid if you don't like the texture and most don't.
    My favorite is fatty ham from a cured and smoked shoulder, but I'm having a hard time finding that these days which is why I generally just use diced kielbasa. Not the best but it works, you have to remove after frying and add back in so it's flavor remains separate like most cut sausage in a braise.
    Thanks for the video, looking forward to more.
    Edit; The bay leaf is a must for me, but I have to say that I have never used a potato..

    Here in the Netherlands we make it with celeriac instead of celery. That taste,s so much better.

    I found on the better than bouillon website that they have ham flavor. I just bought it, but have not used it.
    So instead of using the chicken it may add a deep flavor. Goya also has a spice blend (usually in the section that sell hispanic products) that has a good ham flavor. It comes in a small box with a pig on the package. It does however have MSG in it and we can no longer use it at home (member with allergy to MSG)
    I used to make my beans with it in the past and it was so good.

    I prefer a ham hock but will use bacon if my supermarket doesn't have any ham hocks. And I too add a modest amount of cubed potato. I can't believe how many split pea soup recipes don't include any potato. I also like a bit of heat so will usually add a tiny amount of cayenne pepper (perhaps a quarter teaspoon).

    This soup is a staple in our home. And I am also canning the soup. But we always add some "gepökelte" meat such as "Kasler" or "grüne Rippe" too. Can you get that in the US? Greetings from Germany 🙂

      A good substitute here in the US is smoked turkey wings. I usually cook them alone in the water for a while and cook as in recipe. Once the wing is tender I remove the meat from the bones and return to soup till done.

    How does one split a pea? With child labor or by a third world assembly line of destitute souls being taken advantage of? Starting to sound like America/Tyson Foods )-;

      You can split them by hand but it‘s mostly done by machines
