Just bought a 16 gx460 premium for all the reasons you said and then some. Little lift, tires and protection, this rig will go anywhere. And forever. No regrets!
Looks like the Premium trim doesn't offer the transmission cooler option. That would be a big one for me since I tow an offroad camping trailer. Also doesn't appear to offer the Crawl Control or the 360 surround camera.

Owned both, and both are great rigs. Currently I have the gx460, and it’s the better platform for overlanding IMO: better fuel range, tidier dimensions, still plenty of power.
Righteous -To each their own, but there are serious compromises with a 200. Most notably is range on a tank of gas. The 200 doesn’t have a great departure angle. As you said, it’s considerably wider (a real issue on many trails.) Both have the ridiculous light gray headliner (though you can get black.) In terms of interior and highway driving, it’s a wash. Both fee like land cruisers. In terms of value, there’s no comparison. I bought my 200 new for $80k, and picked up my 2012 GX460 used for 28k with only 40k miles-basically brand new.
Nice! More GX content! I will say though, you guys again didn't mention ATRAC or KDSS which is standard on the GX and you can also get a new GX starting in the low to mid $50,000 range without the air suspension which is more ideal for those planning to lift.
I love the GX, I hope on the next face lift Lexus fully embraces that this is a true off road capable SUV and gets rid of the mall crawler front end to give it a better approach angle. Their GXOR concept is just on point with the direction this SUV should go. It's a really really good value even brand new with it starting right around $50k, while it's still a lot of money, this is what an Explorer or Grand Cherokee is running for and their is just way better capability and dependability with the GX.
I love my gx460. I have a 2011 that I take off-road often. A little taller all terrain tire, trimmed front bumper, and removed the running boards. That’s all the mods you need for most trails. A rear locker would be nice tho.

Awesome content guys! I was between these two vehicles a month ago to replace my beloved 5th gen 4Runner (needed a 3rd row). I ended up with the GX460 and love it! Amazing Lexus build quality and that sweet 4.6L v8 I would have killed to have in my 4Runner. In this day of overly complicated vehicles the GX is the perfect solution for someone seeking luxury, but also a reliable off-road beast. Tuxedo on the street and beast off-road. Thank you Toyota/Lexus!
Just bought a 2018 GX 460 Premium with 40k miles for $35k. Added 3 inch Dobinson's MRR lift with SPC UCA's and Method wheels wrapped in Wildpeak 285/70r/17 and RSG angled rock sliders. About 6k in upgrades and she's the ultimate Starbucks/Mall Crawler and also able to go off grid ;)
They are both land cruisers, it all comes down to how much gear/people you want to carry. Overlanding is by definition carrying a lot of gear and not going too hard off road, so the LC200 is probably the better one since it has more room and more payload for any trip.
Man, you guys should see the stuff I have taken my GX470 up out here in CO. I did lead king basin loop and lake como road in mine, among others. It's a beast. Had a guy in our group with a wrangler stop, get out and jump in with me because he didn't think his was up to snuff. He had lame tires.
Great choice. I almost got the land cruiser too but someone bought it a day before I was going to the dealer. I ended up getting the gx460. No regrets, both are great cars in their own ways. I live on a narrow street so the gx460's size is more manageable when I park outside.
I own an LX 570, and I was just asking myself this very same question the other day. Its almost like your video was posted as I asked the question. Great video!!
I bought a ‘14 GX luxury for the EXACT reasons in this video. I love the land cruiser but a three year old GX is everything that is at half the price. Plus, you can give it to the Wife to drive for a few years, then take it for yourself! Only critique I would add is that fuel costs are essentially a wash due to the GX’s premium fuel requirement.
I thought premium gas is recommended, not required. Think about it, premium gas maybe recommended for lexus lx 570 (383hp)? But toyota tundra (381hp) has the same engine v8 5.7L. And nobody is putting premium gas in tundra.. Fourt generation 4runners had an optional the same v8 4.7L engine like 2003-2009 lexus gx 4.7L. I don't think anybody was putting premium in v8 4runner?:) those are toyota's engines.
maniac32145 I don’t disagree, but am unwilling to do an experiment on mine since it cost almost $40k :). And you’re correct about everything you said. I had a 4runner with the 4.7 L and ran it on regular octane as specified. I don’t think regular unleaded would cause issues in the GX460, maybe someone can do an experiment with theirs and let me know LOL!

Has everyone seen the 'Land Cruiser Utility Commercial' sold in the UK? It comes in 2 door or 4 door body styles. You can buy a basic 2 door with no back seat., steel wheels and a manual transmission. There is also the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado sold in Asia and South America. It is the poor man's GX and it can be bought with a 2.7 engine with a 5 speed manual.
so a note on those engines. they are actually the same family. basically the gx is a smaller land cruiser engine. 1urfe vs 3urfe. in terms of comparing it to the old uz it's actually better in one important way - timing chain not belt. thought I've heard a lot of people say the 460 isn't as punchy as the 470
I had a 470, sold it and bought a 460 to get away from a fast approaching timing belt service. The 4.7 did feel stronger at lower rpm to me. Also felt smoother. The 4.6 may be a more powerful and efficient engine, but toyota trying to squeak every last mpg out of the newer 4.6 via throttle/tranny calibration makes it less satisfying IMO.
@@austinw7028 I have had both the 470 and now the 460. I was REALLY disappointed with the power on the 460 until I put on a Pedal Monster (PM)..WOW woke the beast in the 460 and now instead of a mushy pedal that has boring and sluggish acceleration and makes down shifts a chore, on Sport mode, it surpasses the 470 across the RPM band and the high end blows the 470 away. Best 299.00 spent. Really should be considered the first mod. The PM is more impressive than my GS 350 going from Eco to Sport Plus. REALLY wakes the GX 460 up!!
I have a stock 2003 GX470, if you aren’t doing rock crawling or Moab or stuff of that nature just deep ruts, a couple wheels off the ground here and there, snow, mud etc etc that type of stuff it’s a great SUV with a very comfortable quiet interior, I’ve been considering the new GX460 but my 470 just passed 100k miles and it’s still going strong. That traction control figures out the wheels off the ground thing pretty good.
John Neyrey haha keep it, they are wonderful SUV’s, I’m just getting home from putting around 200 miles on it today going to the beach and had the bicycles and camera gear in the back.
That engine was interesting. The Land Cruiser prado, in the lower trims, comes with inline 4 2.8L turbocharged Diesel. That has a really good fuel consumption Also the starting price in my country for the lower trim around USD$50K
Great video. I have great respect for the Land Cruiser, but, as a former owner of a 1994 and 2015 Toyota 4Runner, I would be tempted to go for the Lexus GX 460.
I’ve driven the GX460, and own a Landcruiser 200 series. The Landcruiser is a much more comfortable vehicle to drive and has much more power. The GX460 feels very cramped and the smaller engine horsepower is obvious. However, the GX460 would be a better narrow trail vehicle, much like the 4Runner. But if you’d be doing tough tight trails, then the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon is the obvious choice. For long, multi day overland excursions, the Land Cruiser 200 series is hard to beat for comfort, capability, and reliability.
Just a short 2 years ago, there were rumors that Lexus was going to shelve the GX460. They were hard to move. Today? We cant keep em on the lot long enough to show them. They are a GREAT solution for off roading. I hope Lexus is paying attention and offers a more off road oriented package with the next generation.
Abdulla Alsada I’ve been looking at a used one and yes the mpg does scare me a little. I wish they did not require 93 octane, it wouldn’t be that much of a hit 🤔
Oh I absolutely love my GX wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world! After my last jeep and all the problems I had with that I decided to try something different and I’m so glad I did. More GX videos please
When discussing third rows, you should really mention the loss of cargo capacity and interior height. The ones that fold into the floor effectively reduce the interior height as a result; they raise the floor so the seats can fold into it. In this sense, the LC is much better. If the GX had the split tail gate like the LC and better fuel economy, it would be a no brainer. Then again, the 4Runner almost achieves this. I can hang a 3'x8'x1' box out the back of my LX.
This is why the 06-09 v8 4runner is the best. Same engine that went into the LC100 and gx470, shorter body than the gx (low cg), 2row only available, and has the power sliding rear glass
The only issue I see with the new Gx460 vs the old 460 and Gx470 is how they’ve integrated the 3rd row seats, now you have that stupid “curb” at the rear tail gate- the older ones you could just unbolt and toss- my 99 LX470 was easy to remove 3rd row seats and the floor is flat PLUS it has the actual truck style tailgate - I’m leaning towards a GX470 or 20210-2014 GX460
I don't think Andre realizes that the 4.6L Toyota engine in the GX is almost identical to the 5.7L engine in the Land Cruiser. The only major difference is that it's de-stroked. You don't need as much displacement in a vehicle that's lighter, anyway. Also, the million-mile Tundra was a 4.7L, not a 4.6L.... TOTALLY different engines.
The GX460 is pretty much a Land Cruiser Prado. A Prado is a stripped down version of a regular Land Cruiser. Hence the GX460 isn't better than the regular Land Cruiser.
Far from it. The GX/Prado is a narrower vehicle with less weight to lug around than the LX/Land Cruiser. And just like the LX/LC, the GX/Prado has pretty much all the off-roading features available as an option. About the only exception to this, IIRC, is the LX's ability to lock one of the wheels to turn more tightly. But the GX/Prado can turn more tightly than any other Toyota/Lexus SUV anyway. Consider that combined with the fact that it's narrower and the GX/Prado can go places the LC/LX can't fit. It's why this vehicle is the UN's conflict zone vehicle of choice.
@@videowsatcher The Australian market get an extra tier to the Toyota Prado over other markets called the Kakadu spec. That one, from what I've been able to find, is pretty much a GX 460 pretending to be a Prado.
The GX is a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado with a V8, different front fascia and a nicer interior. I've always been a fan of the Prado and now that I live in the US I'd definitely go for a GX
4Runner and gx460 are Land Cruiser Padros, gx460 is a luxurious version of the padro with a v8 and the 4Runner a simplified version with the same v6 engine as the 150 padro, both are exactly the same frame and down.
I’m not a noob. the Prado is reliable but needs a motor with around 150kw and 500nm of torque. The engine performs just okay in the Hilux, but the Prado is much heavier. Everyone I know who has one says, “great tough 4x4, but need much more oomph”
I have the 3.0 D4D naturally aspirated (so no turbo) engine (2009). It is slow. That is, if you want to quickly overtake a truck or something at 130/140km/h. Otherwise, it just needs getting used to. In the end it is relaxed cruising on the road. Stable and easy 80-110. Above the engine gets a bit noisier, but not excessively. 120 is the max. It'll go faster, but it takes a while for it to do that. Fuel consumption....I've just bought the car and am still halfway my 180L tank. Did 930km 60% city/40%highway.
What aren’t so great about the gx 1. Only the luxury has craw control, where as base and premium have a hill descend control 2. It doesn’t carry the rear locker from the land cruiser Prado.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I've read somewhere that the Land Cruiser Prado (or Lexus GX 460) and the 4 Runner share the same platform. In that case, I'd take the 4 Runner over the Lexus for overlanding.
My experience with off road driving to a destination is pot holes and wash boards are 90% of the "challenge". I would expect that Prado rear gate will rattle like an SOB and the dust will poor in.
you forgot to show the LC doing that same stuff. New landcruisers have the crawl control, pivoting rear braking, hydraulic suspension help in low range.......
Fun fact the GX is a actual a real land cruiser with a different name, it’s based on the land cruiser Prado which is sold every where else but the US. the prado is actually more related to the Hilux mechanically they both have the same 4 cylinder Diesel engine
I would suspect the weight difference makes up for the lack of power in the GX vs. The Land cruiser. Zero to 60 times are probably similar, power climbing up rocks is probably similar, etc. The Land cruiser is just too big.
The GX is a Prado, while LX is a Land Cruiser 200 series. But with that kind of pricing, the GX is a solid choice. Why Toyota USA do not sell the LC Prado in the US remains a mystery.
we have both a 100 series and a 5th gen 4runner. Have always said the new 4r feels like the 100 sizewise- which has got me calling the gx460 the baby land cruiser.

Those rear seats in cruiser are removable. I owned two of them.
I love the look on Land cruiser compare to Lexus
I don't think Andre realizes that the 4.6L Toyota engine in the GX is almost identical to the 5.7L engine in the Land Cruiser. The only major difference is that it's de-stroked. You don't need as much displacement in a vehicle that's lighter, anyway.
Also, the million-mile Tundra was a 4.7L, not a 4.6L.... TOTALLY different engines.
I have an old Lexus LX470 and I love it. Don't want to drive anything else, but maybe a newer version...
The newer LX 570 is really ugly. The 470 has a classic styling to it and will only look better with time.
So did we! We now have a land cruiser, and sold the Lexus due to its air suspension problem. They're both amazing cars with no issue
@@reck0n3r I can agree so much.
As a GX owner, I would take an LX, or Land cruiser any day.
I plan on selling my GX for an LX
I have both. 01 LX 470 and 04 gx470. The GX is way faster. I like the LX slightly more overall.
@@superdave4543 which car would you say rides softer and quieter on the road (imperfections, potholes and all)?
@@ChuddleBuggy For sure the LX470. Only downside to LX470 is gas mileage. I love mine. My previous vehicle was a 2018 Tacoma. LX is much nicer.
if I could afford an LX would do the same! Someday...
The old GX470 looked so much better. The new predator grill makes it really difficult to find bumpers and armor.
do yourself a favor and skip to 1:40
The GX460 is pretty much a Land Cruiser Prado. A Prado is a stripped down version of a regular Land Cruiser. Hence the GX460 isn't better than the regular Land Cruiser.
Not a stripped back Landcruiser version at all. Totally different platform.
@Righteous I imagine it depends on the nature of the terrain. I've seen plenty of Prados being used by UN forces.
in some parts of the world both 200 series and Prado go from poverty to luxury spec.
@@videowsatcher The Australian market get an extra tier to the Toyota Prado over other markets called the Kakadu spec. That one, from what I've been able to find, is pretty much a GX 460 pretending to be a Prado.
lexus gx 460 is the land cruiser prado
just different name tag , in japan and australia, uk its call as land cruiser,
its small vesion of land cruiser
Since I live in Canada, I'll take that GX concept. It's nice.
I don’t know who would buy a luxury vehicle like this and go take it down a dirty rocky road
Let’s see some LX off-roading videos. Thanks.
Enjoyed the whole show. The comparison was what I needed to see, Thanks TFL.
EDWIN QUIOTO so LC or GX?
Mark Bergeron All in for the GX capable sleeper. Love it.
The only reason to choose GX over LX would be cost. Otherwise LX is hands down better and the used market proves it
Finally!!! Great video with great points!!!
Why didn’t you compare the Lexus LX570 with the Toyota Land Cruiser?
The Lexus GX is based on the Toyota 4Runner and Land Cruiser Prado.
A v8 prado
Finally someone realizes the 4runner is a land cruiser padro
I love the GX so much!
Generally speaking ..just put a set of ko2 tires on that gx 460 and it would do the same as the LC ...GREAT VIDEOS !!!🤟🏼
Great video guys. I have a 2021 GX 460 premium and love it.
Technically they are both land cruiser’s and they are both amazing. Don’t forget about the LX. The Jump seats are very cool too.
You can get off lease gx for low to mid $30k range.
I offroad a GX, if you remove the running boards it will surprise you what you can do stock.
Yep, one of the first mods I did with mine is a 2" lift and rock sliders.
I’m gonna buy a 2.7L 4Cylinder Toyota Prado
Fuel economy is great and I can go anywhere
Sad that Americans doesn’t get the 4 cylinder version
I’m not a noob if laboriously S L O W
David Burt for real? I see a lot of people buying that so I thought I would get one used for cheap
I think it would be a great idea as long as it is matched with a manual.
This is like comparing a excellent hammer to a slightly bigger hammer of the same quality.
What aren’t so great about the gx
1. Only the luxury has craw control, where as base and premium have a hill descend control
2. It doesn’t carry the rear locker from the land cruiser Prado.
audreyappliance wow never thought it could be added! Thanks for the info but I do have’em in mine😊
I like it..looks solid n mean...Excellent video..thanks Tommy n Andre
But the Lexus equivalent to the land cruiser is actually the LX 570
Mr. Wang My thoughts as well.
Are they checking the "equivalent" or alternative option?
$100k vehicle
Mr. Wang the new LX570 can’t really be taken off road. Lexus has destroyed it.
The LX 570 can be off road. It's a 200 series Cruiser.
So, what’s better 4Runner pro with the rear locker or the gx460 Lexus?? Maybe a video??
Maybe I'm wrong, but I've read somewhere that the Land Cruiser Prado (or Lexus GX 460) and the 4 Runner share the same platform. In that case, I'd take the 4 Runner over the Lexus for overlanding.
Your right, they share the same platform which also includes the FJ Cruiser and the Fortuner.
jimbo386 BINGO
L D TACOMA underpinnings for 4 runner and GX both
Adrian Wevers what's a Fortuner?!
Love GX460
My experience with off road driving to a destination is pot holes and wash boards are 90% of the "challenge". I would expect that Prado rear gate will rattle like an SOB and the dust will poor in.
70k mile 2016 land cruiser ( the new updated 200 w all the new goodies) goes for about $50k.... now which one would you choose?
I have a 2014 GX460 and I have no issues with this SUV. Basic maintenance and tire changes. This is a ten year keeper.
Wow, long awaited video, I've been looking for this!!
edit: misread the title, i thought it was a LX570
I’m surprised Lexus doesn’t have some amazing cameras and sensors to guide off-road thereby eliminating the need for a human to guide it.
It does, but he may not have had the option.
I'm really excited about your review, I just purchased a 2019 460 gx premium love it
4Runner Ltd 4.0 Med
Gx 460 4.6 Med+
Land Cruiser 5.7 Lrg
Lx 570 5.7 Lrg

Best of Suv Trucks ever
in free world this would be called LC vs LC Prado
Regardless of pricing...is the GX470 as good as the GX460 for off road?
you forgot to show the LC doing that same stuff.
There are v6 landcruiser Prados
They literally said that in the video.
Gx470 are great too! And way cheaper than a 460.
I would suspect the weight difference makes up for the lack of power in the GX vs. The Land cruiser. Zero to 60 times are probably similar, power climbing up rocks is probably similar, etc. The Land cruiser is just too big.
The Prado is also available in places like the Dominican Republic...
Actually is available everywhere except the US.
@@humbertorubi4947 not in mexico
We drive the lc150 in Costa Rica
The GX is a Prado, while LX is a Land Cruiser 200 series. But with that kind of pricing, the GX is a solid choice. Why Toyota USA do not sell the LC Prado in the US remains a mystery.
Landcruiser Prado is mostly available everywhere out side North America
4 Runner
we have both a 100 series and a 5th gen 4runner. Have always said the new 4r feels like the 100 sizewise- which has got me calling the gx460 the baby land cruiser.
