I’ve owned a 4runner TRD pro (2019) and now I drive a GX. So many reviews always have the “luxury” model. The most expensive GX with air suspension. The base one has KDSS and is amazing. You can get it brand new for around 55,000 which is very close to a TRD pro 4runner. So for roughly 3000 extra dollars can you get a silky smooth beautiful V8 and a transmission that is smoother and definitely better on the roads. The GX is amazing going 80 mph down the highway. The 4runner always felt like it was under powered and strained with no reserve for passing power. So from an on road perspective the GX is significantly better in my opinion and the MPG is almost identical. For sure a TRD pro 4runner is better off-road. That can be fixed on the GX which is definitely my plan (bumper/sliders). Let’s not forget that the GX can be had with red seats:-) To essentially be getting a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado with some luxury features for the same price or a little bit more than a TRDpro… The GX was the one for me. The V-8 alone is worth the up charge.

I have owned both the FJ and currently a GX 460 and the GX is built to such a high standard it's really true about Japanese craftsmenship with both of these vehicles. Cons of the GX are fuel economy but I knew that before I bought it. Fulltime 4wd with a reliable Toyota V-8 is where it shines. Plenty of torgue to get it moving down the road but it's not a racecar for sure. I would say the engine power is "OK". The torque is the best benefit with an example of a 50mph speed it sits around 1200 rpm. At 70-75 mph it sits around 1800 -1900 rpm. Average hwy mileage is around 21 mpg with 4 passengers and gear. In town due to it's weight, it is getting around 16-17 mpg starting and stopping. One of the most reliable engines and drivetrain combos in modern times. These Gx 460s are each taken to a track and driven by 2 people for a series of driving tests before it can ship. This is how you get the quality in a product they have skilled workers and they take pride in the cars they produce. Go watch a factory tour video and see how things are made at Lexus. Pretty fanatical.

2010-2013 Gx460 had the best front end. Best front end clearance and was the face-lift before the "Predator mouth". Looked better, functioned better and essentially the same truck/engine etc as the most current ones. One example of how capable the GX was: First off road trip in the GX was on street tires and stock everything. 4 runner that was lifted on all terrains had trouble getting up some obstacles. GX in stock form got up no problem.
You guys need to get a hold of one of the earliest versions of the Gx and try it out.

I love how people talk about the GX460's shortcomings, yet it's always there being stacked up against whatever the new hotness is at the moment. I'll admit that I have no love for the 2021 Lexus GX body molding crap. Yes; I agree that they should go back to the 2010 front end and throw on some rock sliders. But if you have 2021 GX460 dollars then cutting the bumper cover (to add an actual bumper) and replace the running boards, it just budget dust. The other two items that you may want to be change out (to hit the trail) are the tires and the intake (with an AFe Momentum GT Cold Air Intake System w/Pro 5R Filter Media) for the grunt the kid was tweaking about (basically you need to take that bubble wrap off the hammer so you can use it). I don't know what happened to the 0-60 time for the 2021 GX, but my 2010 is under 7 seconds at sea level. I'm okay with it being normally aspirated because the average elevation of the United States is roughly 2500 feet above sea level and that pushes my stock HP down to about 278. As for gas mileage; I don’t mind paying at the pump as I’m out $0.00 in repairs on my 2010 (correction I did replace a fuse back in 2018) and my GX depreciates at a rate of about $4.00 a day (5 year average). This is some I could never brag about with any of my Mercedes vehicles. So bash away guys; as I’ve literally don’t see a need to purchase a need SUV to replace the GX I have. But in the future, please don’t tell me how crappy a 4runner is and then how great a Land Rover is (they are much better these days) as it’s like peeing on my leg and telling me it’s raining. BTW; I still absolutely love the show…..You guys know how to have fun…….P.S. The 2021 Lexus GX460 is what happens when you let the Marketing guys manage a Toyota Prado.

The shortcomings of the GX impact only extreme offroading, so 2% of the actual 5% of owners who off-road them in the first place... It's inconsequential. Most of the people doing crazy offroading aren't buying new/paying Lexus anyway, so they're irrelevant. The few people offroading these are taking them on dirt and gravel roads, pastures, live in heavy snow and other "real world" scenarios rather than extreme hobbyist rock climbing nonsense.

Hey bro, I purchased a low mile 2014 GX460 Luxury trim for $31k to be my daily driver and it was worth every penny. I really wanted the 2016 Land Cruiser but just had a hard time spending 2x this for the incremental improvement. Hopefully one day I’ll get the land cruiser though as my daily 😅 I would definitely do it as a business deduction though since the LC is >6k lbs.
The only thing I wish the GX and LC had is adaptive cruise control since I take this on road trips but the LC in the US will never have it since now it is being discontinued and the GX does have it in the 2021 model year but that feature isn’t worth an extra $40k for me personally 😂 I hate depreciation.
My last bit of advice is that the 2014-2020 models are all identical in features and everything so generally anything spent over $40k for this car is a waste since it will just vanish due to depreciation and will be of minimal value add for you as an owner. 2021 the only change is the adaptive cruise control. The new grill and headlights can be replaced with the most current gen if you want to facelift your older model also.

The GX right now makes more sense. Any TRD Pro in California is going over MSRP by 5-10k. The 2022 GX has a totally redesigned center console and infotainment screen. And locally I can get it cheaper than the 4Runner go figure. The V8 will last for a million miles. The FJ is discontinued so I won’t mention it since I’m looking at a new vehicle. This GX is loaded and is over 70K. GX’s start at 55k and a decent optioned one at 60 is still way more luxurious and enough to tackle the great outdoors. A 2” lift for 1500 bucks plus installation and some bigger tires and it’ll eat some decent trails for breakfast Check out some RUclips videos on lifted GX’s they are no slouch.
