  • The 2021 Lexus GX 460 is a full time 4wd midsize luxury SUV bargain. If you're looking for an off-road capable vehicle that has a V8, seating for "seven", and really nice leather appointments, the GX is right up your alley. However, there's a lot of things about this SUV that will make you think why it's still available for sale in 2021.

There's an issue I've noticed with a lot of car reviewers that really needs to be brought to attention. There is a marked and distinct difference between "outdated" and "still being used because it's the most reliable, intuitive, and maintainable machine built in the past 20 years".

I thought I'd hate the barn door, but I actually like it. I would probably feel different if I lived in the city, but then again I probably wouldn't even own a GX in the first place. I love the fact that you can buy a brand new old-school SUV. The fact that it's not "modern" is THE selling point. Buy it and you won't need a new car for 20 years.

Exactly. I love the side-swinging back gate, and it makes me laugh watching "modern" reviewers bash this awesome vehicle because of something retarded like Apple car play. Swap the head unit if it matters to you and go on down the road. In the old days we swapped every head unit on every car we bought.

I have a 2010 Lexus GX 460. It now has 180,000 mi. I have had zero issues with it ever. I've replaced the battery twice, brakes, and tires. It still sounds new and drives like the day I got it. Nothing on the inside creeks and rattles. I have kept it in my garage but it literally looks new on the outside and inside. I get it serviced at the Lexus dealership in New Orleans. They have never once told me that I needed to do anything to it other than just the oil change etc. I think they are very well worth the money. If I'm on a long road trip and just interstate driving, I get about 22 MPG. Just random City highway probably is around 19. I've always used premium gas. I hate to see these nice naturally aspirated engines leave the Toyota Lexus family. I have a 2017 Lexus RX 350 as well. I think the old engineering is better than the new engineering.

I bought my new GX 460 because it was "outdated". The body on frame is what sold me. This rig feels safe and solid, compared to other SUVs. I don't care about the infotainment center, because I don't use that Apple Car Play or anything else like it. The satellite radio works well enough for me. The nice lazy V8 is sooo much better than any four cylinder I've had in recent years. There's plenty of oomph when I need it. But you're right about that rear door taking up extra space. It's something that I've gotten used to, and it's not an issue. This GX feels like my favorite pair of slippers, very comfortable. I'd be content driving this rig forever. Plus, the gas mileage is fine with me. If I wanted an economy car, there are lots of other choices, but not for me.

Real good review citing pros and cons of the LX 460. Probably the best I've seen on RUclips. The LX 460 comes with outdated and antiquated stuff inside but that isn't necessarily negative. I've been going to showrooms lately and encountered new features I don't care for, at all. Give me antiquated and outdated that come with bullet proof reliability and dependability. Don't need Apple Car Play or Android Auto, Start Stop and a gigantic screen, among other things some find them desirable. Should i decide to get the LX 460 I'd get it preowned because it'd be cheaper than new, quite a bit so and since it's reliable it'd have plenty life left. It would be more awkward for me to open it from the right side. I do have 4 issues with this car 1. lack of storage compartments 2 lask of charging outlets (solved with some cables) 3 the third row should be removable and absolutely no need to have motors in those seats. 4 there should be more space above pedals for large size feet. I think Lexus sticks with old school tried and true technology until they can fully test whatever they are going to upgrade to next. Its why they update the body style but keep all the mechanical parts the same. It's why they use the same engines for many years and just update them periodically. It why they stick with a V8 when other manufacturers are using more efficient turbo 4 cylinders. Those turbo fours will be burning oil and breaking down less than 100k miles later because they are overworked pulling an SUV's weight. Lexus V8 will lazily pull this car along for 20 plus years with no issues. I think they also could get more power from their engines but prefer longevity over performance. I think they have the right strategy. However for this car they really should have at lest updated the interior and infotainment system. I think doing that would raise the costs however so they just save their resources for the eventual refresh. Just over $50k for a Lexus SUV really isn't bad. A top model Dodge truck will run you $70k or more. The interior might be nicer but if the car wont last who really cares. Most cars are made to last 10 years but a Lexus is made to last a lifetime, well at least 20-30 years that is.

I don't think the interior looks dated. Many newer cars look fantastic until you start touching the materials... The exterior has a big presence. We have two of these and a runner in the household. They are ridiculously cheap to maintain and get parts for. The 4runner is not bad at all, but the Lexus will hold its value much better as it's one of the best and last V8 off-road body-on-frames.

The lack of AA is the only thing concerning me. In today's automobile world, the manufacturers have turned cars into forced-obsolescence commodities like cell phones. At least with AA you get the ability to keep up with new technology without replacing your vehicle - which is something that would play with with Toyota's reliability. As for the side swing tailgate - I've always had side swingers, never a hatch (Isuzu Troopers, Vehicross, FJ Cruiser, Hummer H1) and it's never ever been an issue.

I bought a GX460 premium with sport package in 2021. I now have 19,000 miles on it. Though that may seem low for the amount of time I’ve had it that’s my normal driving. Unlike the jeeps this Lexus has been trouble free. The only thing I’ve done is replaced the rims and tires with 18” wildpeaks AT 3 W’s the stock Dunlop’s sucked and there are very limited offerings in 19” tires to fit the stock rims. The swing door is my least favorite thing about the GX460. Here are all the reasons why it's a HORRIBLE design.
    1. Parallel parking, as stated. Try opening the door wide enough to fit anything bigger than a backpack.
    2. Nose-in parked -- you're grabbing stuff out the back, gate is open, and traffic is coming from the other side. Car hits door. You're dead.
    3. Night safety -- You've just gotten back to your car from a hike, you're putting your stuff in the back of the truck. It's night time and dark out. Your ENTIRE view to the right is obscured, making it easy for someone to come and mug you.
    4. Rain -- In a normal truck, it rains, you open up the gate and it provides cover. This does the opposite.
The gate design is actually bad enough to warrant selling the truck, but otherwise, I absolutely love it.

The nonsense criticism and undervaluing of great pieces of engineering like this,is living the American market flooded with Crapp sheetmetal smartphones on wheels, and as a result, the Japanese are pulling out there best work like the FJ cruiser and soon, the legendary Land cruiser.

Let’s concede that most luxury vehicles don’t have the reliability that Lexus does. A good competitor against the GX460 is the Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit w/( premium laguna package). This option wraps all upper and lower panels with top notch leather. Moreover, the leather is far superior than Lexus’s. If you decide to go with the V8, you’ll get 17mpg combined. So that’s slightly better. Nonetheless, the technology is far superior. I’m a Lexus guy but I do find the Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit compelling.
