  • "'The Get Along Gang' - NOT the Saturday Morning TV series but the original 1984 TV special...the one with the scavenger hunt, the car race, and songs performed by John Sebastian (who performed the song 'Welcome Back' from the 1970's TV series 'Welcome Back, Kotter').

      they tried to in the early 2000s, but it was more of a sequel series that featured descendants of the original gang. It had a crime fighting/mystery solving focus, but the test pilot was not good at all. It's on RUclips.

    Oh wow, you can really tell this is Nelvana animation when Montgomery is moving his head around and talking at 1:30. The way his mouth is underneath the muzzle, and all the distinctive mouth-shapes- that's so Nelvana! Like a fingerprint. I LOVED this show back in the day- it was my first realization that shows would also be cancelled- I asked my parents why I never saw it anymore and they confessed it had probably been taken off the air, lol.

      I mean, she's not my kind of gal -- sapient or not, can you imagine the dogbreath? -- but she was hella cute. I'm pushing 40 and I still grin at that cheerleader routine in the closing credits every time I see it.

TBH, I think Nelvana would have done a better job. DiC put out some quality cartoons during this time period, but the Get Along Gang series wasn't one of them IMHO.

    I gotta admit, I think the gang's appearance and voices are better here than in the DIC series (except Portia, in my opinion, she definitely looked and sounded cuter in the tv series). Also, somehow Dotty seem more cheery and likable here than in the tv series.
    It's also kinda a shame the DIC tv series only focused on the main six gang members (Montgomery, Dotty, Zipper, Bingo, and Portia) while the other six only made cameo background appearances (except Braker who made occasional guest appearances). I have no idea why. You know, that's kinda the opposite of what they did for the Care Bears series back then.

    • @kayokango
      @kayokango 7 лет назад +10

      Dotty was definitely done right in this Nelvana pilot. She matches the characterization she had in the original books, which was being a sort of big sister figure to most of the rest of the gang.(similar to Montgomery's "big brother" role.) Dotty's father was a master mechanic, and taught her quite a bit about machinery and tools. This is also properly portrayed in the Nelvana pilot. The Dic Dotty was no where near as pleasant, in fact she could be a real brat at times. She easily gets offended, and or jealous. She's also prone to fits of anger and even occasional physical violence towards the other GAG members(particularly Zipper and Bingo) which is as out of character as Dotty can get. And for some reason, Dic decided to take her talent of tinkering with machines and give it to Montgomery instead.(that also never felt right.) I'm up in the air about which version of Portia I like more. She's cute in both versions to me. I do enjoy her one of a kind voice in the Nelvana version, but she's great in the Dic one as well. She stayed the most in character out of the main six in the Dic series. As for the other six members being almost entirely ignored by Dic? Well that was a massive cavalcade of missed opportunities now wasn't it? Having an extra six characters to write stories for and experiment with would've given the Dic series more life and variety. But alas, strict status quo won out.

    • @artytoons
      @artytoons 6 лет назад +5

      The toy lines for the Get Along Gang concentrated on the main 6 characters. DIC's cartoon episodes were 12 minutes long enough to feature the main 6 plus Braker Turtle in a few stories. If new episodes were made for a second season or expanding to weekday episodes where DIC was more than capable of producing, the other 6 (Braker, Flora, Bernice, Lolly, Rudyard, and Rocco) could have appeared more often with dialogue.. but it sadly did not happen.

    For those wondering why Nelvana Studios didn't animate the Get Along Gang tv series: Nelvana did not have the staff or the budget to animate a full episode run of tv animation series at the time the Get Along Gang pilot was in production sometime in 1983. The studio had produced animated various half hour tv specials in the late 1970s and the full length Rock and Rule film that had a limited theatrical release in 1982. Rock and Rule was a big financial disaster ($8 Million in production costs and hundreds of animation staff members were employed) and it almost closed down the Nelvana Studios for good. Nelvana co-produced the Inspector Gadget tv series with DIC Productions in 1983 to bounce back from the Rock and Rule financial debacle...animation work was farmed out to other animation studios in other countries including Cuckoo's Nest in Taiwan. Nelvana worked on some episodes but not the entire 86 Gadget half hour total episodes for weekday broadcast. Nelvana also produced some live action programs such as "20 Minute Workout", "The Edison Twins", and "Mr. Microchip" and animated this Get Along Gang special, the Special Magic of Herself the Elf, and several Strawberry Shortcake specials in the same year for broadcast in 1984. It wasn't until 1985 when Nelvana had the budget and the staff to produce animated tv series independently with licensing deals with the Ewoks/Droids series and Care Bears (DIC also animated Care Bears episodes as well). Nelvana's relationship with DIC on the Inspector Gadget show probably led Nelvana to turn over work for a Get Along Gang tv show to DIC.

    • @fiveofseven
      @fiveofseven 7 лет назад +5

      It's also worth pointing out that between June 1984 and February 1985 Nelvana were also working on "The Care Bears Movie", a major undertaking which no doubt taxed their available resources significantly.
      Although DiC's animation wasn't as slick or consistent as Nelvana's, it wasn't animated radio either. It certainly wasn't any worse than anything that Hanna-Barbera, Filmation or Ruby-Spears etc were putting out at the same time and in some cases, arguably a lot better.
      It would be interesting to compare the relative budgets and production times of the above and the average 20 minute DiC episode and find out what other obstacles DiC had to negotiate that Nelvana might not have encountered.

    • @artytoons
      @artytoons 7 лет назад +3

      TV Network guidelines were strict enough for animated shows airing to play up the educational lesson and etiquette-teaching in the stories instead of putting in too much cartoon slapstick (or violence). It was either getting a high profile national television time slot on the schedule and keeping animation studio employees employed by following network rules of script writing or not getting the series shown on tv screens across the country at all.

      Join Montgomery "Good News" Moose (voiced by Sparky Marcus) - The leader of the Get Along Gang. He is very nurturing and kind, and knows what is right or wrong, although he is sometimes awkward. Montgomery is also very well-rounded: he excels in athletics, tinkering in electronics, and science. He wears a blue turtleneck, yellow pants and brown loafers.
      Dotty Dog (voiced by Bettina Bush) - A cheerleader and second-in-command to Montgomery. She is very optimistic and always has a way to cheer things up, although she is sometimes not careful and quick to judge some things at some point. She wears a white and red cheerleader outfit, white socks and black and white sneakers.
      Woolma Lamb (voiced by Georgi Irene) - An aspiring ballerina. She seems to be defined by her vanity and beauty, and is often seen carrying a mirror to admire herself. Sometimes, she can be selfish and irrational about things, but would stand up for others. She wears an entire yellow outfit consisting of a dance dress and ballet slippers.
      Zipper Cat (voiced by Robbie Lee) - An athletic feline who excels at sports. He often plays the "tough guy", which sometimes shows that he is also cynical; however, he remains friendly to the rest of the gang. He wears an orange sports jacket over a blue turtleneck, matching orange shorts, white socks and orange tennis shoes.
      Portia Porcupine (voiced by Sherry Lynn) - The youngest member of the Gang. She is very inquisitive, curious and likes her own style, but tends to cry or throw tantrums when frustrated. She wears a white shirt, blue folded jeans (denim shorts in the 1984 special), and black and white sneakers.
      Bingo "Bet-It-All" Beaver (voiced by Scott Menville) - A prankster and gambler whose bets and mistakes sometimes cause his friends to be angry with him; on the other hand, however, he enjoys being with his company. He wears blue overalls which carry a red scarf inside a pocket, and black and white sneakers.
      Braker Turtle (voiced by Frank Welker/Don Messick) - A smart problem-solver. In contrast to his real-life species, he is also the fastest runner in Green Meadow. He enjoys being hip, despite his nerdy appearance. Braker makes occasional speaking appearances in the DIC cartoon series, usually as a friend of the gang, but did not appear to be a full-time member of the gang. He wears a blue jacket over an orange turtleneck, white pants and blue shoes.
      Rocco Rabbit - A reformed bully with a tough exterior. He wears a red shirt, blue jeans and yellow tennis shoes.
      Rudyard Lion - A foreign-exchange student, who has a crush on Woolma. He wears a magenta Hawaiian shirt, orange pants, black and white sneakers and a black hat.
      Flora "Forget-Me-Not" Fox - An avid botanist and photographer. She is extroverted, rather the one not to hide her feelings, despite appearing shy to others. She wears a yellow collar shirt under a sky blue dress, matching socks and mary janes.
      Bernice Bear - A very sensible girl who likes keeping things neat and tidy. She enjoys baton twirling and is also proficient in cooking and sewing. She wears a pink sweater over a white blouse, blue shorts and brown loafers.
      Lolly Squirrel - The rich daughter of the candy factory owner. She has good manners, yet tends to be a bit of a tattletale at times. She wears a red cardigan over a pink dress, white socks with red mary janes, and a matching beret.
      Hocus Hare and Pocus Possum - A pair of magicians. Hocus wears a pink dress over a yellow blouse and under gray coattails, and pink dress shoes. Pocus wears red coattails over a gray dress shirt, blue pants, and black shoes.
      The two regular villains of the show were the only non-mammals in the series aside from Braker:
      Catchum Crocodile (voiced by Timothy Gibbs) - The show's main antagonist. He is a constant troublemaker who is always trying to take whatever he wanted, regardless of whose it was, sometimes through bets with Bingo. More than once, he had tried to steal the Gang's clubhouse caboose.
      Leland Lizard (voiced by Nicky Katt) - Catchum's sidekick. Although he is rather dopey, he is not always as dumb as he looked, and is sometimes especially sneaky. In the pilot, he was able to change color, but he showed no such ability in the series

    It is rare that a pilot cartoon was animated by one studio and then the series was animated by another with a different voice actor cast. The anime series Kimagure Orange Road had the same thing with a direct to video pilot episode and then a different studio animating the 48 episode tv series plus new Original Video Animation episodes and two theatrical movies with a different voice cast. An animated Dennis The Menace had a cartoon special produced by DePatie Freleng/Marvel Productions around 1980 and later had an animated series produced by DIC for syndication in 1985 and later for CBS Saturday mornings in 1988.

      To be fair, Nelvana did not have the capacity or staff for tv series production in 1983 when the Gang special was made. The studio did animate the full length "Rock and Rule" movie and several half hour tv specials but no series. It wasn't until 1985 when they have the staff and budget for tv show animation. They animated the Care Bears series and the Droids/Ewoks cartoons.

    • @artytoons
      @artytoons 6 лет назад +2

      BTW, the original voice of Montgomery was Charles Haid who was appearing in the series Hill Street Blues as Officer Renko. Haid was quite busy as a regular on that program and may not have the time to play Montgomery if Nelvana animated the tv series. Haid later played Lucky Jack in the animated Disney movie Home on the Range.

      bigg34691 I think Cam Clarke was the voice of Montgomery good news Moose in the TV series when the series was picked up by CBS and they had a bigger budget. Thus, the animation budget and voice quality went up. Because this cartoon pilot is boring as hell even as if it were in 1984-1985.

      No it was Sparky Marcus the voice of Montgomery and also Dorno from the Herculoids 1981 version. Cam Clarke was the voice for Dogtanian, Leonardo from Ninja Turtles and Liquid Snake. Scott Menville was voice for Bingo Beaver in the tv series and he also voiced in the 1986 version of Jonny Quest. The tv series has two Hanna-Barbera voice actors like Don Messick the voice of Officer Growler (another cartoon dog character for Don Messick) and Frank Welker the voice of Braker Turtle.

    I'm not going to say which version is better, because I'd like to see all the episodes first before I have an opinion. But I will say that here they have more matured voices, whereas in the series, the Get Along Gang had more kid voices, which makes sense because they're supposed to be kids anyway. Have you noticed that Montgomery has a bit of a southern drawl in the pilot but not in the series. Zipper's voice has the most notable age difference from the pilot to the series. I thought Catchum Crocodile's voice was more gruff and reflective of his bully persona in the DiC series. Here it sounds just more sly and arrogant. Leland Lizard in the pilot was more goofy, whereas in the series, he was a spineless lackey.
    Although I like the Get Along Gang Pilot, I'm willing to cut some slack on the DiC version.

    I just realized there was that many kids in the GAG. I suppose being used to the TV series that came afterwards, I thought there was only six of these guys but I guess not (not having much familiarity with their appearance in merchandising and the like). The lion character looked rather interesting, too bad those guys didn't get much lines to say at all here outside the central 6 kids.

    • @artytoons
      @artytoons 9 лет назад +2

      The toy line concentrated on the main 6 (Montgomery, Dotty, Zipper, Woolma, Bingo, and Portia) and the tv series focus was on those 6 with Braker Turtle making occasional speaking appearances as a friend of the Gang but not a full-time member. It would be difficult to have all or many of the 12 kids in the gang appearing in most or every story with the 10 minute story episode format (2 stories per half hour show). If the Gang series went into weekday syndication production with the standard 65 half hour episodes so common during the mid 1980s, there might have been more appearances of the entire Gang group or some of the "other 6" (Braker, Bernice, Rocco, Rudyard, Lolly, Flora) kids as a central focus in some stories...like "The Transformers", "He-Man", "GI Joe" and so on.
      I was a fan of "Hill Street Blues", "St. Elsewhere", and "L.A. Law" prime time shows at the time with a regular cast of 12 or more actors plus guest stars in 3 individual storylines per hour episode. The Gang series would have potential like those popular prime-time shows to follow that kind of multiple story format per episode if the running time was a half hour or one hour story in length. DIC Productions had the capability to create new episodes for weekday broadcast but sadly, the Gang's tv series run ended after one season's worth of 13 half hour episodes in constant rerun cycle for CBS.

      Christopher Sobieniak The Gang concept seemed to last longer in the United Kingdom with a 93 issue weekly comic book series running from 1985 to 1987 with original comic panel and text stories with the characters. A good number of current Gang fans come from the UK.
      The toy and greeting card line lasted until 1986 in the US when the Gang tv series ended its run.
      Lots of potential that are left unfulfilled with this group of furry kids in "real life small town" adventures for all ages. If "My Little Pony" can be resurrected in its current mega-hit status...who knows if maybe "The Get Along Gang" can follow...
