Thanks for the great project idea. The hardest thing to get was the M12 bolt, I ended up finding one at our local Autozone.
For anyone else that might hit this, the wires that go from the controller (the one linked to in the description) to the motor didn’t match for me. When I plugged in the three wires to their matching colors I could hear the motor in the hub hum but the wheel didn’t turn. I ended up with (from controller to motor) yellow to yellow, blue to green and green to blue. I hope that helps out anyone else that might hit this issue.

I legit have been looking for exactly this kind of build. I have an old trail bike I've wanted to convert to an ebike, and possibly add fat tires as well, but the cost of all the conversion kits are ridiculous or way underpowered and won't break 15mph.
So now I'm going to use this method, have a friend 3D print some housings and brackets so it's not all zip ties, and see how many battery packs I can fit in the frame space in parallel for the most range (I'm guessing about 4 of the largest ones, so maybe about 80 miles per charge. Unless I do 2xParallel of 2xSeries so I've got 40 miles of 70v for MOAR POWAH

So inspiring Jehu. I've been following you from the spinning camera adapter days. I just bought my wife an ebike and I would like to bike with her, but I'm in hospice and have no balance. You inspired me to take on building a three wheel ebike, as I can't afford to buy a three wheel electric, and I just ordered the wheel from you. I'm very excited. I have to thank you sir, you are very inspiring. P.S. I'm pretty sure I bought a spinning adapter from you back in the day...of course that's long gone.

I know what we're asking Santa for my kid for christmas this year. Dirt bike is nice, but this is so much more practical for any kid.
I'm thinking an aluminum bracket mounted to the frame to hold the battery so you can take it with you to charge (at work, friends house, etc...) plus it becomes significantly less attractive to a thief if they can't just make it go, or steal the battery.

I have a few old bikes, and I'm kicking around the idea of making an e-bike. I've seen several reviews and how-to videos, and it seems that people are recommending powering the rear wheel of a bike. The front wheel headset, the tube on the front of the frame with bearings that connect to the handlebars, is not made for the torque of the electric motor. It can damage the headset, even breaking the welds that hold the headset to the frame. I don't know how much of a problem it will be, but something to consider. With me being "El Gordo", I'll need extra power to get me up the hills, which means extra extra torque will be needed, and extra strain on the frame.

I have a 3 wheeler that came with an ANCIENT 12 Volt motor and battery. Both died at the same time. I trained my service dog to pull me. (I am handicapped) Bought a new motor and battery and with no instructions, got it to work. The freedom I experienced after being a cripple for 5 years is beyond description. My.dog still goes with me but instead of being a prisoner at my home, I now look forward to getting up every day and exploring my hometown. It is better than a car and My service dog LOVES IT. My problem hooking things up was the pedal assist. I pedal as mu h as I can so my legs wont atrophy but all the extra stuff I dont need. This video shows a simple way to get going. Please do a video on 3 wheeler's. They're different. Like you, I.want speed and power. It seems the people building 3 wheelers for handicapped folks dont want us to go more than 25 mph. Mine does 30. 1000Watt 20 Amp-Hour Battery. No pedal assist needed or wanted. It was a PITA from the start. Thanks for the nice short video. Do 3 wheelers soon!

My GF got an e-bike and I can say once go electric you will never want to ride a regular bike again at least for distance riding. For everyone contemplating getting one and worried about the range, my 2 cents after owning one for a while I would not worry about it as long as your bike has 15 miles you are fine for 90% of the time unless your are going to commute to work and it is a longer distance or some special use case. We use our electrics for running up to the grocery store or corner store. Again it is so worth the $ spent.

I like the idea of the motor that sits next to the pedals, because when you wanna use it just as a normal bike, it doesn't add un-neccessary rotational mass to the wheel, but I don't know if that can fit into this budget. I mean less than $150 is great

I know it's a year later. In my research, there are pluses and minuses to what you describe, a mid-drive e-bike conversion.
The plus as you mentioned is you can use the gearing.
The minus is for a novice user, they can destroy the chain or derailleur if they are in the "wrong" gear and get on the throttle.
For someone who is an avid cyclist, the mid-drive is probably the way to go as they understand the gearing and will use it properly.
For others, a hub motor, front or rear is the way to go. While not taking advantage of the gearing, there is also less chance of destroying the drive train.
There are rear hub motors as well and I think that would be more natural ride experience. Having a FWD bicycle just seems odd to me. While a RWD bicycle is probably more stable.
Finally, while the conversion depicted in the video just used a throttle, the controllers have input for a pedaling sensor, making them able to just do assist. Meaning it won't go unless you pedal.

cool build, but I think it's always better to put the motor on the back wheel, specifically when you're going uphill(pushing from behind your weight vs pulling from in-front) & to have better control & agility when turning.

yea I was thinking that too. But I guess that it is harder to put it on back.

    • @brandulak
      @brandulak 11 месяцев назад

I disagree. The motor doesn't have enough weight to make a difference when it comes to control. But more even weight distribution provides better safety. With majority of weight shifted to the back, I've had situations on steep uphills where my front wheel jumped high into the air. If not for my reaction the bike would flip over me. I changed to front motor and it never happened again.
Also this way you can have a 2wd transmission if you're assisting with pedals.

I also wasn't on the throttle the whole time so mileage may vary. With the large battery, I had to install a bike rack and mount it on there as I couldn't find another place on my bike that it would fit. He also wasn't completely forthcoming with the large battery you also have to buy a dongle so you're going to be out about 100 bucks on that battery, plus a bike rack, plus the controller has gone up in price as well and you need a dongle for that and a specialty charger end for the battery as well as the charger itself. This for sure quickly became not the cheapest e-bike conversion kit but it's a class 3 e-bike for MUCH cheaper than anywhere else I could find.
