Sweet, I found a card game on my apartment ceiling as well! Unfortunately I can't figure out how to open it, it's a weird shaped box that keeps beeping at me and I can't find the BGG page for 'Smoke Detector,' can anyone help?
Its a game for one to a thousand players and the rules are simple. Players take turns starting fires. The first player to get the smoke detector to beep continuously wins the game. However, if the fire gets out of hand and the fire dept has to be called, all other players win.
It's actually a popular party game. Once it starts beeping you have to quickly secure it to your neighbours' door with generous amounts of duct tape. Bonus points if you do it in 3AM.
3:20 There is an error in the rules explanation for Mandala. When you play a card to your third of the Mandala, you do not draw any cards. Here's the quote from BGG: "if you played cards into one of your fields, do not draw new cards."
Was I the only one that subconsciously was like “yo where is Matt for this video?” and then realized that for some daft reason I assumed they would be social isolating together😂
"Except you're fencing with two swords at the same time. Which the Olympics continues to now allow BECAUSE THEY'RE COWARDS." Actually a top-tier quote.
god I love the bit at 14:55 so much, the awkwardness, the slow descent down the steps, the fact that the reverberation makes what they're saying more and more unintelligible, and the reveal to the next game. It's so funny XD
You reviewed tournament at camelot!! Family friend of mine designed it, actually!! I got to be part of the playtest group for tournament at avalon! Tournament at avalon definitely takes the chaos of the first game and turns it up to 11, which is fantastic fun.
Firstly, 1. Your neighbours probably think you're absolutely mad 2. The scene where you're menacing your poor neighbour on the stairs, had me in stitches
You made me go and double check the rules for Mandala, Quinns! Bit of a rules goof in the vid: if you play any cards to your side of the mandala (your field) you don't draw any cards at the end of your turn (but must keep at least one in your hand)
Thank you for recommending Mandala! A couple of months ago I was in a huge board game store in Berlin and one of the employees recommended it to me, but I forgot the name and my Google skills in this case were lacking.
@@Jaccident No that is not the correct way to pronounce the capital in dutch/flemish. In dutch it's Brussel. (Majority speaks dutch in Belgium, but not in the capital ) French: Bruxelles. It sounded like a bad pronounciation of the French one.
Just picked up Tournament at Camelot and, after a couple of short two player games as a test, (which the game is obviously not designed around) I can confirm that the game is a hell of a fun time. Love everything about it, the gameplay, the oversized cards, the theme. While I typically dont enjoy any game involving luck, in this one it's just wonderful because it adds to the chaos. Now that we have the rules kinda figured out, I can't wait to teach it to our regular play group. It's gonna be a hit for sure.
I used to teach fencing and tried two swords a few times. You just end up using the extra off hand one to defend yourself and the other one pretty much normally so it’s not actually that different.
Love this kind of video, lots of little games explained briefly and clearly. Add the SUSD flair and wit and we have a winner. Loved the Oink games one, and loved this!
Thank you so much for that light and fun video! I dont think I will be able to get any of these games easily soon....as I am in Japan right now, but I put them on my list. As for LoveLetter, I have a lovely version with historical Japanese characters and play it at every opportunity I get! So, it is not forgotten
Great video. I love your podcasts/vids. As an 'essential worker' i find i am looking for any sources of light relief and distraction from my work life at the moment during 'The Faff' and you nicely fill that hole 🙄, in a good way. Thankyou so much for doing your bit and being there for us 😉. By the way most the games you've talked about in this vid are now in BGG's The Hotness List! Influential eh!
My friends and I absolutely love Tournament at Camelot. I didn’t know there was a new version with Avalon! I will be immediately purchasing it in hopes that I can play it when this crisis is over.... if any of my friends survive.
We are in the process of making a variant for Camelot and Avalon for 2 players. It’s a bit different than the main game (for a reason. Lol, I mean there is already a two player version of the main game). But it may help pass the time.
Thanks for excellent recommendations. I ignored them all and bought Hundreds of Horses. I'm irrationally pumped to play. In seriousness, a couple of these are definitely on my radar now, sitting in a list of potential buys, though I did really buy Hundreds of Horses. Cheers!
Glad to see that you're still doing well amidst all this! Hope your wife is safe and well also. By the way, the bit with the guy on the stairs totally got me! It was fantastic
In light of the present circumstances, I can't help but wonder if Quinns can teach us how to review our favorite card games to a non-existent audience - I think that more than anything could really catch on!
I love all your videos, but the writing in this one was particularly top notch: "if you've not heard of Art Nouveau, it's a lot like normal art but curvy." The choice of Hundreds of Horses was brilliant. And can we just acknowledge the hilarity of the wardrobe choice.
Loved it. Thank you. BTW - I decided to add Mandala to my Amazon shopping list and the site then suggested Air, Land, and Sea. When I clicked on that game the site suggested the last 3 card games from this review! Is that the power and reach of SU&SD... or has Amazon's big brother mode reached new heights of creepy stalker?
I have a question because I am struggling to understand Bruxelles 1897. How do you "pay" the things you buy when you do your actions? And when do you go to the next round?
Due to this quarantine I've realized, more than ever, how important is to have a passion (hobby) like ours. Thanks for entertaining, intriguing and informing. Fun, fun video! Cheers from Ecuador.
Funny thing about telling people in self isolation to watch the videos, I injured my leg at work a month ago so I had to spend 2 weeks off it and guess what I binged? That's right, all of SUSD's reviews. Made notes on the games I was interested in. So binging everything is a good use of your time.
Haha totally love your videos. You actually make me want to buy all these games featured. Oh well, we all have to have something to look forward during self isolation I guess.
The Ragnar Brothers started the tea-towel-as-a-board thing with History of The World circa. 1990. That game also featured a sadistic idea that never really caught on: Hundreds of cardboard counters of standard thickness which had to be cut out with scissors. Those were the days. A card game my family really enjoy is the vicious, stabby Oriflamme.
This video was great fun and a nice reprieve from the rest of life. Thanks very much for sharing! I enjoyed the different themes/art styles of the 5 games you chose along with the interesting mechanics of each. You had me for a few moments on the stairwell, really well done! 😂😂
I have not forgotten about Love Letter, though I did get fatigued by the numerous clones. Currently I am playing a weekly game of Love Letter online by way of Steam. Really enjoying the videos as I jump randomly along the playlist.
Hi, there's this new card game called "Lagim Card Game". It is a Filipino folklore-inspired game composed of villain deck, lagim cards, lakas cards, and hiwaga cards.
Also, Space Explorers is pretty fun too, would you consider that a card game? I mean it uses cards but there are a couple other accessories, mainly tokens and some tiles.
Arkham SUSD don’t really do solo board games. Solo board games are pretty divisive, either you like them, or you don’t. And the guys at SUSD don’t like them. And if they would make reviews about board games they don’t like, then those reviews would be pretty dishonest.

atzerath tide pods were like a year ago, what do you mean the tide pod eating era?
This guys enthusiasm for board games is infectious, I swear.
I've been infected then! I regret nothing...
Nice videos, I bought a crokinole board thanks to your video review. Can you do a "Top 5 Solo Card Game"
3:20 There is an error in the rules explanation for Mandala. When you play a card to your third of the Mandala, you do not draw any cards. Here's the quote from BGG: "if you played cards into one of your fields, do not draw new cards."
Yup, that's the case. When you play to your "field," you get 0 cards. The third possible action is to discard cards of one color to redraw new cards.
Was I the only one that subconsciously was like “yo where is Matt for this video?” and then realized that for some daft reason I assumed they would be social isolating together😂
Yes, they are married
Who do you think he kissed when playing Mandala? ;)
I honestly thought they lived together
Sounded like Matt in the stairwell though?
That "I just found a Bruxelles game under some cracked eggs in a parking garage" smile just warmed my heart
"Except you're fencing with two swords at the same time. Which the Olympics continues to now allow BECAUSE THEY'RE COWARDS." Actually a top-tier quote.
Insane Quinns is my favorite Quinns.
"You seal the evening with a kiss."
It was at this moment I knew that Mad Quinns may have started as a joke but it quickly became reality.
"you, like most artists, will realize that what you're doing is completely financially unsustainable." Why don't you just @ me next time Quinns
"Hey kids! Who wants to be a German subsistence farmer" 😂
'The slow majesty of the opening of an automated garage door'
... Pure poetry, Quinns 😂

"art noveau is a lot like other art but curvy" is genius
I just wanted to say I literally laughed the hardest I had in months at the whole scene with you "stealing" those games from that guy. Thank you.
I agree. Super funny how the scene unfolded.
Yup this made me laugh too!
I'll be honest, he had me in the first half
It’s a nice continuation from the My City review
Firstly, 1. Your neighbours probably think you're absolutely mad
2. The scene where you're menacing your poor neighbour on the stairs, had me in stitches
That stairwell conversation was brilliant. Great tension, then a playoff. Classic Quinn's
You made me go and double check the rules for Mandala, Quinns! Bit of a rules goof in the vid: if you play any cards to your side of the mandala (your field) you don't draw any cards at the end of your turn (but must keep at least one in your hand)
Same here, he picked up a card when he played one on his field which was not allowed according to the rulebook...
I only discovered SUSD about 2-3 weeks ago, and I'm really loving these vids. You guys are awesome, thank you for keeping me amused!
Thank you for recommending Mandala! A couple of months ago I was in a huge board game store in Berlin and one of the employees recommended it to me, but I forgot the name and my Google skills in this case were lacking.
The prononciation of Bruxelles made me laugh in the most positive way possible. Adorable.
Sounds like Quinns learned it from a Dutch person. :)
@@Jaccident No that is not the correct way to pronounce the capital in dutch/flemish. In dutch it's Brussel. (Majority speaks dutch in Belgium, but not in the capital )
French: Bruxelles. It sounded like a bad pronounciation of the French one.
E. de Ruijter I didn’t mean he was pronouncing it in Dutch, I meant he was pronouncing it the way I hear Dutch people pronounce it in French.
That withdraw rule for air, land, and sea made me go "oooh...." Out loud. Yeah I need that game.
It's so good. More bluffing games should incorporate something similar.

"Art Nouveau is a lot like normal art but curvy" so true... haha ;D
I live and breath for Quinn's metaphors. It's what keeps me coming back. Love the vid. Just started playing hand and foot with the parents last night.
I love this! It reminds me of the silly themes and overarching stories in some of your early episodes.
6:06, I was writing something and laughed so hard I lost control of the pen. I love your comedic brand! Also buying Air, Land and Sea because of you!
I wonder what the other apartment dwellers thought about a weird guy rolling through the halls.

I'm guessing they're used to Quinz by now.
The whole time I’m thinking, “did he wash his hands?”

The stairwell scene was brilliant. Thank you for the laughs. Stay sane.

You say this as if you’ve ever wanted a sprite.

Yeh, but do you want a Sprite Cranberry?
The world: wash your hands constantly, don't touch anything
Quinns: rolls around building hallways
10:02 now that's some swift Naruto running Quinns
The hallway bit was absolutely amazing. Loved the whole thing but that was masterfully done.
Cracking video and classy touch on the NPI recommendation. Keep it up chaps, stay safe

I need two-sword fencing and I need it now.
Kendo is Japanese sport that allows the use of two swords.

Reading the Monopoly rules again?
😂😁😂😅😂😁
Always bring a knife to a monopoly fight-I mean game.
I got so used to the echo from the stairwell that going back into your flat genuinely sounded weird O:
"... Kind of like fencing with two swords, which the Olympics continue to not allow..... because they're cowards" :DDDD

Came for the games but thoroughly stayed for this man. He should be presenting on TV or something. Brilliant! 🤣

Just bought Tourney at Avalon. Thanks for the awesome video, I hate that I saw it so late.
Gull actually is a word, and you used it correctly! It's the root of gullible.
I thought he meant "goad".
You do realize we are contractually obligated to not believe that?
@@Eidenhoek Or possible lull

12:54 'Gull' is a word, and it means what you used it to mean.

AC130: "I would like a word."
The scene in the stairs actually had me fooled for a bit. Well acted.

A cacophony of bravos for the stairwell scene!
“Do you have any card games? …What’s that behind your back?…easy as that!”
Bravo!!!
