Belgian Malinois Family Dog - Things to Consider

  • "Belgian Malinois Family Dog" is not a phrase you hear often. In this video I lay out some things to consider if you are thinking about getting a Belgian Malinois as your family dog. As the mother of 4 busy children, I was told I had no business getting a Malinois. The best decision I ever made was to ignore the haters and dive in to working with this amazing breed. Belgian Malinois can make excellent companions and are very capable of being family dogs. It takes a solid commitment and a lot of time and work, but I encourage you to consider this breed! If you're considering a Belgian malinois, watch this first!

I was just given a 10 year old Malinois that the owner had abandoned. Told me it was a mutt. NOT! Sweet dog, high energy, and needs to run 5 miles every day! I know now why he gave up. People get Malinois because they seem to be a cool dog to own, but they aren't ready to put in the work involved, and this goes for any breed. After only 2 days, she now knows sit, stay, and down by hand signals alone, and walks at heel with complete attention! It took me 16 years to train my child...

Of course if you neuter them you can control them. But what about the intact males? Castrating a dog leaves you with a gnome, not a dog. Most people castrate high energy dogs these days - and it leaves a facsimile of a dog.
Of course Malligator Mom has three - they are all fixed, or about to be. No offense, but this is how I feel. What can someone who snips their high energy dogs - really teach someone who doesn't?

About a month and a half ago my husband and I got our malinois at 8 weeks old. I did the process backwards. I got the dog, THEN researched. I was terrified. All anyone does is say how insane they are. How all they do is bite and destroy things. I already fell so in love with my little Ace but I was so scared that I wouldn’t be able to give him what he needs. He is now 13 weeks and so far he is the chillest malinois I think anyone has ever heard of. Granted, he is still a puppy but this little guy is LA.ZY. Lol! We had his first session with a specific mal trainer yesterday and he was in disbelief by how chill and happy go lucky our little guy is. We have really lucked out. I’ve never been so happy and excited to be a malinois mom. I am not a fan of the community, as most people think ALL mal’s are EXACTLY the same and can’t even comprehend that there are such things as more relaxed family mal’s. But I love this video. Can’t wait til my guy is older and I can take him on all sorts of hikes and walks. Just one more session of shots!

Thank you for emphasizing the importance of potential owners taking responsibility for the care and training of a Belgian Malinois. Too many people want to have this dog but do not want to put in the time and effort it takes to make the dog's life a good life. I am glad you seriously discussed training WITH your dog and finding a trainer who is educated/experienced with this dog. I could never understand how sending a dog away for 4 - 6 weeks to be trained by another person and then having the dog just dropped off at the owner's house would be a good idea. You are obviously a very dedicated, loving owner and I hope viewers listen to your advice. Best wishes for you and your wonderful dogs.

Wish you would’ve made this video before. When I got myself a Malinois I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. It was a huge change in my life and my schedule. Waking up early everyday to take him to the restroom outside and being with him 24/7 while we training or not. He always had me next to him. And now he is my best friend that I wouldn’t trade in the world. I love my Belgian Malinois to death and I would never get another dog besides a Belgian. ❤️

I recently rescued my malinois from a guy who obviously had no experience with this type of dog. He tied him up to a tree for the first 4 months of his life with nothing more to play with but his food bowl. He is now 16 month's old. He still loves to play with his food bowl but loves sticks even more. He's been very good with the family, from kids age 2 to elderly people plus other dog's. He's never had a bad day. He is very smart and is egar to please, and knows many commands. He is also very fast, He caught a jack rabbit the other day . BTW he didn't hurt the rabbit , it was just a catch and release moment. He's by far the best companion I've ever had. I just can't believe anyone would let him go. My whole family loves him and hope he lives a long time.

You're the first voice of reason along my search about the breed. Your comments about 'gatekeepers' made me smile and put things into perspective. Many websites say how difficult they are, and then I read other breeds they wrote about that I did know and found them inaccurate. I'm happy to see somebody sensible. I'll be watching your videos! I used to breed mastiffs and Argentine Dogos, but my Chessie is 10, so it's been a while since I raised a puppy! Your puppy training brings back memories, and not a few times did I think, OH I forgot about that.

In summer of 2019 I adopted 6 year old sora. She is an ex cwd for explosives detection. She has been a great member of my family. She loves to run play, and of course cuddle at the end of the day. She is great with my children, and is protective of them as well. She has german commands. She is by far my hero for her service in iraq. I have had trainers ask me to do french ring. I refuse with this comment. She has done her job, and done her job as one of the best. Her only task now is to live happy, and collect her toys. If, and when considering accepting a mal into your home remember the K9 heros who do need a great home. We owe a part of our freedom to these wonderful canines. Great channel as well ma'am. Wonderful information. Please continue to advise that belgian mals need for proper training, and great care.

Hey! Thank you so much for this video, all explained in simple manner with respect for the RUclipsrs. Lots of ppl who talk about mals, makes you feel miserable and stupid for getting a puppy, and just discouraging. Some people even told me don’t even think to get pregnant when you have this dog it will kill your baby! Can you believe that!? Some people so mean! So I am super grateful for your channel and all information and motivation vibe that you share! Me and my husband got a 8 week mal pup, his name is Loki. He is a wonderful guy and we also have a cat and he just amazing with him too, even tho he is with us only for a week! We already found a specialised in malinois trainer and super exited to start his training sessions.

Thanks, dear Maligator Mom; awesome video - I love your approach. I've gone for a working line German Shepherd instead of a Mal 5 years ago because I've got a massive respect from their super-hyper drive. My dog is drive-y as well, but has only punched a bite-hole in my hand once as a youngster (by accident). Fellow sports dog owners with Malis have showed me many more "hole punch accidents" on their hands and arms, as the dogs are SO FAST to grab their toys; and sometimes, a hand gets in between. But in any case, it's an amazing breed.

I agree with everything your saying.
Our 11 month Dutch Shepherd (Indie) is so much like your "Fury).
I had no experience of the breed so swatted up big time.
She was a rescue at 7 months and had a confidence issue. 4 months on and she is just lovely. So responsive and a huge personality.I am no expert trainer so did my research pronto.
If you commit to the relationship and really make some effort on training and relationship building, literally within 4 months You'll have an amazing companion and a natural protector. Indie is super energetic.amazingly calm ( until the ball or puller comes out).Loves play and training, very quick learner and has certainly stolen our hearts with her character.

Beginning March of this year we took home our first Malinois Lady, she was 14 weeks old at that time, a week later we suddenly had the lockdown and my child was home all the time, even though I could not commit to the dog the way I had wanted to commit to her I managed to get an amazing Malinois that I love with all my heart and that loves me with all her heart. Yes the first 2 months I cried, I considered giving her up because I couldn't give her the time she needed but then I kicked myself in the Butt and I started reading and watching youtube videos and I started implementing what I had learned in those videos and now even my trainer says he has never seen a Mal like her. She is so stable, so calm, so absolutely loving to everyone and everydog

I just got my Malinois about 3weeks ago. She is amazing. I am fortunate to have an adult daughter at home, full time and as dedicated to training and utilizing Marz’ energy as I am. I am willing to spend time and money to train, but I am finding it hard to trust outside trainers. There are so many in the LA/Orange Co area and all very costly. I bought the annual online program with Robert Cabral, but want appropriate training with e-collars and other training tools. To add to the excitement. My son bought Marz’ littermate and the next door neighbors bought a German Shepard a few weeks younger. I am considering setting up my own agility course in my yard. I have trees, yard and ingenuity, but I worry about failing. Marz is sooooo smart. I love her soooo much. I want to be a good mom like you.

They are hard work, we are pretty basic to average dog owners. But we worked and worked on training and he’s the most amazing dog. He bikes with us, he plays in the field (trained to be off leash when it’s safe) great with the family especially the kid, He pulls the kids on their wagon, crate trained, hide and seek, you name it. People made us feel guilty for getting him because our last dog was a chihuahua. But all it took was hard work, persistent, routine, love, and a couple chewed up stuff (puppy days).

We have 1 yr old Malinois mix (rescued at 4months). They told us he was going to be energetic. Honestly, the teething was the worst and I really questioned if we could handle him. But since then he has matured drastically and has become such an amazing dog. Super cuddly and friendly and all he wants to do is please. If he starts getting hyper and misbehaving we just give him some commands.
He LOVES being told what to do! It is all about the flair with him. Like “I could just walk over and sit next to you but instead I’m going to boing in the air and do a spin and slide in like a stunt driver!” That’s what having a Mail is like. They don’t play with toys, rarely growl or shake their heads with toys (although they do whine). But they run around like horses and will charge at you.

I have a 6 month Mal, she's the best - nothing like what you've mentioned - she's so chill, loves to play disc and go for walks but she loves laying around the house, especially on the couch but we put in a ton of hours and $$ in training

Thank you for you videos and insight. I’m still doing research on the breed. I think they’re amazing dogs and would love to own one someday. I’m a pretty active person and would not have a problem helping the dog drain their energy through rigorous exercise. I would enjoy it actually and it part of the reason I want a mal. This would be my second dog. My first dog was an APBT that I had for nearly 11 that I raised from a puppy until it was her time to be put down due to a brain tumor sadly. She was nothing short of amazing dog that I trained/socialized myself. She ended up being the total opposite of all of the negative stereotypes that APBT’s have. She was an 80lbs lapdog. I put a lot of time, effort, and most importantly, love, into raising her. I’m more than happy to show the same commitment to a mal. I’m well aware that Mals have a way higher drive than pits and and it seems as though that they have an even higher energy level than pits. Would somebody like me, who is willing to put in the time, effort, and love into raising a malinois, be a good potential owner? This dog would primarily be a companion who would be my best friend/exercise partner. I would greatly appreciate any feed back from you and from any one else who might have experience with both breeds. Thank again for your videos and thanks for taking time to read this comment.
P.S. You’re dogs are awesome and make me want a Malinois even more.

I have 2 malinois and my mom and dad have 8. I’ve had many different breeds and after having my malinois I can’t go back to any other breed. They have to be busy 90% of the time and for me it’s amazing. They’re not a breed for everyone. You’re 100% right that if a person can’t put in a lot of time and effort into training, they shouldn’t have this breed. They a lot like huskies.

Wish I had found you and one awesome trainer I found on youtube 4 years ago when I got my boy. He's a sweetheart to US, but he is a brat! I have to do right by him and figure out a way to train myself to train him because he deserves it. We have major issues with stranger anxiety, fear aggression, and he's the biggest turd with his ball. Wants me to throw it for him but doesn't want to drop the damn thing. Can't even take him anywhere because he hates the car since he gets car sick :( I have my work cut out for me! I enjoy your videos because you obviously have very well trained dogs!

I had a male German Shepherd, and always believed that Malinois is definitely not for me as it's triple work comparing to a German shepherd. The breeder of the Sheppy I had (breeds and trains German Shepherds and Malinois) said that a perfect dog for me is a female Malinois and I got very surprised. Still need a lot of research and reconsidering before making the right choice.

I had a stray dog show up in my yard the other day and when I took him to the vet they told me that he looked like a Belgian Malinois. He is beautiful, about 6-7 months old, sooo gentle, even with my chaotic kids. I already have an Australian Shepherd and I am not sure that these two will be able to get along...my Aussie really likes having the family to herself and she is not too sure of this new friend. For now we are fostering him, getting him healthy (he has intestinal parasites) and just trying to figure out if we can even work him into our family. We have a yard with an invisible fence but we are a busy family of 4 kids involved in sports. I am hoping he stays as relaxed as he is currently. Everything I had read about Aussies was similar, high energy, needs lots of exercise, make sure you are ready, etc. And my Aussie is the prissiest dog, just wants to be inside, snuggling up to her people, will run for maybe 5 min and then just wants to lay down.

I'm actually considering getting a Malinois further down the line for 2 main reasons, the first being their ability to be protectors as my partner as two small children and we plan on bus living and going cross country, the second is their size, as they are on the smaller end when it comes to 'guard' breeds.

fishing, snowboarding and hunting. sports and the outdoors are very important for me. the thing is i have zero experience with dogs. i am willing to get proper training with the dog.
is there any chance this could work or is it a bad idea?

Hi. Marc from Belgium (Malines). I know malinois from when I was a kid. Back in those days they were used as guard dogs for farmers. Before that, they were herding sheeps, goats and cows. They were also working dogs: they would pull a milk cart (practice that is now forbidden). What is well known, even if you have a "good" one: if you are a person that is inexperienced with dogs: DO NOT get this dog, you will get into trouble (biting, agression,...); expecially around children. And you will never find out "why" (I know a lot of people that had to put their malinois down, although there was nothing wrong with the dog, only the (insecure, ignorant) owner). For an experienced dog owner, this is the "creme de la creme", and the malinois will be sweet, intelligent, protective without aggression, full of love,... YOU have to decide if you can handle a dog like that, bc your inexperience can get a perfectly good dog killed or family members hurt...

I have noticed that my pack has calmed down with him. We have set up a fabulous trainer who is coming into our household to help us with our Mali and the entire pack. We honestly believe that God blessed us with this baby.

I have done lots of research and just got or boy a few days ago he already has learned sit, down, stand but because I have kids I have been told several times how dangerous they are and there Not pets, we got him from a breeder who dose not breed for high drive and he's 8 weeks so he's being socialized well but it's so discouraging to constantly be told there only for police I've had huskies and boarder collies and I feel like that stuff could be said for all working breed dogs

I have always wanted one and just recently rescued one that was a stray and then got adopted and left in a cage all day and broke out. Very bad separation anxiety. They were going to put him down so I adopted him. And currently have him at a board and train right now. But it is very involved I go up weekly. Advanced off leash and working on his separation anxiety.

Not a fit for our family at all but she protects my husband in the mountains from predators and whakos. She’s perfect for that situation but not in our home at all.

Dan Shaffer 8 hours in a crate is a long time for a Malinois but I know people who do it. I just personally wouldn’t.. my opinion is that these dogs are living their best life when they can be with you “most” of the time and 8 hours a day in a crate and another 8-10 hours at night and you’ve got a Malinois who is spending over half his life in a crate. I don’t think that makes for a very happy Malinois... but again, that’s just my opinion.

beautiful dogs .. I always wanted Malinois, when I was a kid, my grandpa had one and it was just a amazing dog.. I grew up with dogs in our familly , we always had a sheltie .. 2 years back it was time for my first dog and my frist thought was malinois.. But, even if grew up with dogs and cant imagine life whitout them, this is differnet.. I will be responsible for this dog, I have to train him/her..So I did research and just didnt feel I am good enough ( experiance, knowlage ) for this amazing breed.. So I pick sheltie :-) as I knew this breed and if I fail as owner atleast there is no chance sheltie would attack other human or child.. Happy to say our training went good and she lives happy life and she is trained very well .. But to be fair, shelties are really easy to train as they live to please... So I am happy with my choise and maybe my next dog will be Malinois

We had a our Malinois die at one year, one week old. This happened to us a month and a half ago. We are still devastated. Aspirational pneumonia! We are looking into getting another. Her mom just had a litter we are waiting to meet them to see if one might be good for us again. This time around though will be different. I do not have any children home anymore. We both work and she’d be spending more time in her cage. My husband will bring her to work some days and will be coming home at lunch to take her out. I just don’t know if this will be enough. I do plan on training her like we did with our other one, Reina. We make sure she will always be around us when we run errands and etc. I teach so I do have summer “off” and we love walking and being outdoors. I just miss my girl so much. She brought us so much joy and excitement. What are your suggestions? Thank you!!!
