Agreed. It's wonderful to hear someone experienced feel confident in saying so while being fair minded. Yes, people need to be realistic and prepared if they are going to get a dog, but let's face it. Most people into sports still are going to keep a dog in the house. Most people have jobs or careers and families, friends or maybe want to go out to dinner, etc. Nothing wrong with that either. It's life.
It's also about modern breeding goals. Behavioral genetics is in its infancy, but there are already genes identified that cause the "glaze over" and a ruly frame of mind, when there is even one copy, and it's worse when there are two. Altering selection can keep the drive and the right amount of energy without creating the insanity some have.
When in doubt, behavior training and problem solving - especially scentwork (Nosework, tracking etc) - can really wear a dog out or satisfy it, no matter the breed, at least for awhile.

yes the early days on RUclips when Belgium Malinois Were becoming popular own people. A certain type of demographic made you to believe that only they could own. I've been doing my research of Belgium Malinois since 2014 iv Learn a lot of what they are and what they're also not. Bottom line they need to be stimulated a lot of the time. The owner needs to realize what their breed needs before they go out and purchase a dog, and then Completely execute and what their dogs needs are.

Ive got a low drive 3 year old Malinois, 20-30 minutes a day of vigorous exercise is all she wants. She naps or lays around the rest. Very well behaved, she was a search and rescue “flunkie” that didn’t make the cut due to ......you guessed it...low drive.

  • @MarionWante
    @MarionWante 3 года назад +131

Just my thoughts! I own 2 Malinois, one high drive from a working line who is 22 months old and one low drive showline of 15 months. With the high drive I train approx. 2 hours during the day (obedience), the other one rather lies on the couch or plays with the high drive dog. We don't keep them in a crate, only when they were very young. They behave well inside our home and are not destructive. Malinois are not for everyone, but if you can offer them structure and consistency they are wonderful dogs.

@@shiftside8128 How exciting! It is always important to introduce a puppy to other dogs, as long as you know that you can trust the other dogs! @Eugene Hausenfus There are more people who keep them outside for various reasons. As long as they have a proper shielded place it is no problem. But Malinois shed a lot of hair and I assume you will have physical contact with the dog, that could be a problem for your allergy.

Yes, physical exercise is not enough! Mixing in obedience and mental stimulation games help in so many ways...reinforces correct behaviors and wears down energy. We like to place a tennis ball around the yard (hide in different places) while I have them sit and stay and then on my command, I yell “find it”. Fun to watch them “work” for the ball.
    Great content. 👍🏼

So glad to discover your channel. I have raised and lived with both GSD and Dobies, but the gate-keepers were keeping me away from Malinois. I now have an intact male Malinois who is just as well behaved as my GSDs and is acclimated to living with a cat as well. Judicial use of a kennel during puppy stage has helped greatly as it does with any puppy. So many videos of people using Malinois for protection work and useless and dangerous stunts, like jumping over 6 foot fences. These gate-keepers constantly over-rev the drive of their Malinois and then wonder why they are unmanageable in their own homes and with other animals. Malinois are shepherds. They naturally want to protect their humans and other animals in their pack. If you give them structure and balanced training, like a GSD, they will excel in a family environment.

I actually am doing the same and have been watching many videos and ready many articles and have found that. a) it depends on the individual dog. b) while they require a lot of exercise it can be MANAGEABLE but you need to know how. c) they are smart as a wipe and you need to keep them busy (which is why I think they would make amazing assistance dogs)

I love that you point out no one has 5 hours to work on their dog. We constantly get compliments about how involved we are boe and he has not had more then 2.5 hours a day since we worked on a ranch. We do give him commands regularly though out every day though.

  • @stuarteckersley8943

It's good to dispell the myth. I used to exercise and train my Malinois for 5 hours a day until I learnt how their mind works. Now the regime is disengagement and calming techniques interspersed with several 5-10 minute focused training sessions and 23 hours of good manners around the house and hanging out with me. Teaching disengagement is the key to unlocking the potential in these dogs. It stops them wasting time caring about squirrels or joggers and leaves them able to give 100% of their drive to any task you give them.
    Love seeing your videos.

Omg! THANK YOU!!! I can’t tell u how conflicted I was for the first year with my dog. All due to constantly coming across trainers and dog sport people who are always posting about how people who don’t do dog sports or are police or military shouldn’t have a mal. I do understand where some of them are coming from but it is SO discouraging for people who absolutely can handle them but just need some advice. There are better ways to educate people about the work that goes into having one of these dogs. And also discourage certain people from thinking they want them. Believe it or not some of us are more than capable of making a lifestyle out of the breed. This video was the first time I’ve seen a schedule similar to mine. I think it’s a great example of what it looks like to live with these dogs especially for someone who might be thinking they want one. They are definitely different but for the dedicated dog person, so so rewarding!

Also when explaining the real reason I use it people misinterpret that to be oh so the dog is vicious. NOT correct 🤬😡 it annoys me so much. I totally agree with the video message too, Nailed it for sure 👍

It's a freakin' lot of work but she is a sweetheart. For now her favorite exercise is wrestling with (me manipulating) a big stuffed "Snoopy" dog toy that wrestles with her like a littermate would. She wins and the stuffed dog plays dead... then suddenly comes back to life and wrestles her onto her back. Poor Snoopy takes a beating... has to be a firm and sturdy stuffed dog to survive this Mal-abuse.

So happy for the clear and understandable way in which you relate to not only your dogs but to we the listeners. I was blessed with a German Shepard / Malinois mix after the loss of my 2 - 7 lb Maltese full service dogs. Having raised German Shepards for a blind school and subsequently going to work in their office, I learned so much about service animals. My Dad also trained dogs used in WW11 in the Pacific. I’ve been around dogs all my life - yet when I adopted a dog from the shelter she turned out to be a gift right from God. Apparently she had had a litter of pups and was surrendered. My luck to be at the right place at the right time. After a month and a half I am learning about the high energy & smarts of a German Shepard/Malinois mix. We are learning together and I like you believe in building the relationship first and we are adjusting together nicely. She is certainly getting me out and more active than I had been for awhile & since I have her she is certainly getting my butt moving and in shape. So together we learn. I’m a senior citizen and find the joy and activity she requires to be the best companion I could ever hope for. Thanks for your great videos and sharing what you know - so many are being helped by your outreach. God Bless You Maligator Mom. All the Best, Miss Ellie and Ariel…

When I finally found my perfect fit trainer after trying 5 others (I thought I had found the right one before my dog arrived), I found out I was exercising her way more than I needed to. My life does still revolve around her exercise and mental needs but it is definitely not as restrictive as it was before finding my perfect fit trainer. I knew she did not have an off switch and I was not exhausting her by any means but I gave up my life because of my work schedule being so demanding. Mental stimulation toys and scavenger hunts in the house are her favorites.

My Malinois is the fifth dog in my pack and it’s all about the mental stimulation and asking a lot of them - the more you ask, the happier and better behaved they are as they don’t enjoy being bored or having to find entertainment of their own, and if you do have high expectations of them while they’re awake, and break the days up with frequent short bursts of play and obedience/searching etc, they’re as capable of switching off as ANY breed.

You're perfectly right that one should not over exercise a driven dog like a belgian malinois. Because they would indeed do anything you ask them until they drop dead.
And the more you physically demand from your dog the more it improves it's fitness and the more demanding it gets. Which will not lead to good results.
Mental stimulation ist the key with high driven dogs to make them calm.
But what I actually wonder is: don't you take your dogs for a walk?
I am of the opinion that daily walks and obedience training or some kind of dog sport is the right thing. For 2-3 hours a day.
Maybe during the week 1,5-2 hours and more on the weekends.

Great job mom. I agree with your time estimate. :)
Here's a good gauge for all the Malinois owners out there. If your dog is happy day to day and they are NOT destructive, then you're on the right track. Let's think for a moment about Malinois that ARE Police or Military dogs. If it's a slow day and not much happening, those dogs will SOMETIMES ride around in a car all day with their partner. They might take a break and get out of the car to walk or play. Military and Police Malinois DO NOT get worked hard EVERY SINGLE DAY. It just doesn't happen. My Malinois is napping in his chair across from me right now as I type this. He's crazy high energy, but he also loves a good nap. There's seems to be a lot of "Mysticism" around the Belgian Malinois. Maybe that's from some of those "gatekeepers" also. Who knows. :) The "gatekeepers" sometimes go a bit to far, but their hearts are in the right place.
In all fairness to the "gatekeepers", their sole aim is to prevent these AMAZING Malinois from ending up in a shelter to be put to sleep because people DIDN'T know what they were getting when they got a Malinois. Hollywood makes a movie about a Malinois and everyone rushes out to get one, only to find that the dog doesn't fit their sedimentary life style. They refuse to give the dog training and structure, then the dog begins to cause trouble and chew up all their shit. Finally the dog ends up the pound and eventually put down because he's to high energy and no one is willing to adopt it.
Again, if your Malinois is happy and NOT being destructive, you're on the right track. If you're Malinois is begging you to do something with them, then get up and go do it. If not your Malinois WILL chew up all your shit and dig foxholes in your yard. Please don't test me on that. Your Malinois will come as ask you to spend some time with them. Just listen when they do. :)
Sorry for rambling on. I'll shut up now. :)

@@deanm8262 like most dogs then 😂 the high energy and high drive of the Mali I would say because of the use of them in the Armed forces most people misunderstand and put them across as not suitable for family pets ect but in my experience all dogs are individual like people and have different levels of drive and Mali's are no different from German shepherd's or Rottweiler or alot of other working breeds of dog, genetics plays a big role but as a pack animal the owner sets the rules so a little terrier can do 5hrs of exercise following a pack leader same as a Mali but is it completely necessary 🤔 wild dogs go days without food but do we starve our domestic pets for days 🤔

Thank you so much. This has put a positive spin on having a Mal. Other videos and opinions I've seen have a very 'you can't sit with us' vibe. I get that you don't want people getting dogs that their lifestyles can never work for. But it doesn't help to completely scare folks off. A lot of times, having an active dog forces people to become disciplined and abandon their sedentary ways, which also helps with mental health. I don't like the idea of telling people they are going to have to give up every other aspect of their lives if they want a dog. I've heard some people say Mals aren't for families or pets. Like what?? Are they dogs or wild wolves? If they are dogs, they love butt scratches and attention, and by jove, they will get all they can from me. 😂

More than that means you are training an athlete and the more you get them used to the more they will need. Unless you wanna do professional sports with your dog you can easily get them used to 2hrs of walking/playing and have a super happy Belgian!

Thank you for keeping it real!!! Please do a video on mental stimuli that you use.

Thanks for this video. Yes i was curious on this topic. I have 3 dogs an old pomeranian, a 4 yr old shepherd cattle dog mix, and a 3 year old northern inuit dog we think. We've lived vanlife for a couple years and soo yes its possible to have any dog live in a small space as long as they get enough excercise (outside) and mental stimulation. We do about 1 1/2 - 2hrs excercise a day running, jogging powerwalks mixed with pack walks (im a dog walker) we also do obedience on the walks and the dogs go every where with us soo they get a lot of mental stimulation, we also do hikes, skateboard, biking with them etc. They know in the van its calm chill lazy time and they usually get soo much sight seeing and in different neighborhoods and on our walks that they're pretty tired midday onward and are easy the rest of the day since i usually do a lot of the exercises with them in the late morning. Theyre actually pretty chill dogs compared to all my clients dogs that live in big houses with yards and everyone says they're soo well behaved. I think having a couple dogs can be hard at times but i think its good for them too because they can interact with each other and also they mentally stimulate each other and are there for each other on dog levels.

But you are right I used to sleep in till 8 and since Luna we get up together and from 8 to about 10 we do outside but she just needs to run and run then she is o.k. with about 40 minutes training (sit, down, heal,) I only have trouble when She goes in crate while I clean and do my chores, she yells till she is tired yes when the phone rings she is so so bad, but I will keep up your advice! I can't vacuum and have her out, she grabs it and won't let go! Yes she naps and I take advantage of this to do my food preps!

I was going to ask you about the e-collars. I am glad to see that you use them. I actually asked my husband for one for Christmas for Sadie. We live out in the country and have no fence around our property. Just this morning I took Sadie out to do her business, it is kindof funny to me but she will not go until I throw her the ball. Anyway, it was still dark outside, she was doing her business with her ball in her mouth, must have seen a deer probably frozen in fear and Sadie took off. At that point, recall does not work on her. UGH!

We have a back patio at work and I let them play there for 5-10 mins too. We do balance training (positive reinforcement, redirecting and ecollar as last resort.

You got my subscription. This was a great video. I have gotten so much discouragement from the majority of feedback from the "gatekeepers" out there. I get their stance though. They see so many Malinois given up and sent to shelters so they're pissed about it. However, I feel they should be advocating, encouraging, and educating for these amazing beasts. But hey, people gonna do what they do. I am a first time dog owner. I was looking for a GSD through a Working Dog rescue in my area. Particularly a puppy because I have kittens and kids. They had one puppy at the rescue... A pure bred Malinois... I wasn't sure about it because of all the negative BS on most malinois forums, channels, etc. But I'm also a stubborn ass myself and when someone tells me not to do something, I'm driven to prove them wrong. So Odin came home with me. Long story short, I met with a trainer for puppy basics and obedience. I've had him for about 7 months now and he's a year old. At this point, he's the best dog I've ever been around. He's a puppy still and he can be an asshole sometimes, but he has brought so much enjoyment and fulfilment to my life. An aspect of life I never knew I was missing. Yes, he needs work, but it's not the end-all-be-all of existence some make it out to be. Odin gets about 2 hours a day on average. (Sometimes less.) He's in his crate for large spans during the day. And so far, he's doing great. He's great with my kids and cats, good with other dogs and people, and walks perfectly on the leash. Love him to death and I'll probably get another one fairly soon. Keep up the great work! I enjoy your videos!

As former rescuer and trainer, dogs in crates is not healthy. I recommend dog walkers, camps, doggie day care, and other forms of exercise. Think how crazy one gets locked up with no work, games, 0 to remain mentally ok. I have had dogs so aggressive and out of control I just took them to wilderness to chase rabbits and run off steam....just saying....

Loved the advice on personal time with puppy. I have an almost 7 month old and 20 month old Malinois (and five cats!) and love them, and NO I also don't have 5 hours a day. (I had a beautiful Czech German Shepherd I lost 4 years ago)and started looking again for another one, when I came across my first Malinois and just fell in love with him, so the time came he needed a friend to play with so we got him a sister. Crazy energy yes, but smart and funny and goofy.... They are trained pretty good, (she still learning leave it with cats, but listens!) but I do need to work on the heel and the in-between and just that close walk off leash.. Do you have videos on that? (New subscriber today!) Oh, I found your grooming one first as I was googling grooming tips for them as she sheds really heavy, him not as bad. Awesome videos and dogs! thanks!

    I agree
Finally someone is telling the truth
I have my mix German Shepard for 16!years
So a year after he was gone I started to look into adopting a puppy
Its not easy to find a puppy in the shelter Almost impassable to find German Shepard mix puppy
I was looking for a year and one Sunday one of the rehoming place called me that 3 German Shepard mix puppy’s are available for adoption
    I was so happy
Anyway they have 1 female a 2 males siblings
We pick a male a took him home
I have experience with German Shepard and know right away that he was a little different then any German mix i was familiar with lol
The first 3 months I did the basic training I noticed that he was very smart and intense to the point of neurotic
He also was obsessed with any flying grass or leafs
It was impossible to leash walk on windy days
I was not familiar with B Mels
My vet never suggested anything on that subject
But at about 6 months old I was pretty sure that he was very little German Shepard and almost 100% whatever he was mix with lol
I did my research and found out very quickly that he was Maligator lol
By that time I figured out how to make him behave and got his nipping bites under control
The more important thing was to teach him how to snap him out in less than few seconds when he is absorbed in fun plays and starts to be alligator
They are extremely smart and by 6 months I could use my hands as enthusiastic entertainment in plays and he wouldn’t put any pressure catching my hands in his mouth
But I think that was the key and you need that enthusiasm snapping under control first
I agree with everything you say
My Belgian is with me for over 2 years now
For everyone who is considering taking them into family they great smart extremely happy and loving loyal dogs
Since they become popular we have more and more of them in shelters in need of home
What they need is anyplace with you
If you have a yard and think you can let them out to exercise on their own it’s not going to happen
They will sit there and wait for you to come out and exercise with them
I work full time and we have strict schedule
My Indi knows exactly when I go to work and what time I will be back
He is perfectly good with that
They need to exercise hard for 20 minutes a day
And like you said I do 10 minutes of hard play twice a day
3 walk’s a day in addition to that
Twice a week dog park or dog beach
    He loves the ocean
But he is only invested in dog plays for 10 minutes and he is back with me
So even dog play time don’t get you a break
He is just interested in everything you doing and need to be involved all the time
Saying this they perfectly happy just following you around the house and watching your doing cooking cleaning and taking shower
Its important to training them during play time inside
Anything that is challenging and requires mental involvement is a everyday play time for us
So 20 minutes hard core exercise
    a day
Minimum of 3 walks around a day
20-30 minutes split in 2 session of mental challenges inside play
I only train him by play
So he will be ok with you gone to work and he will be waiting and relaxing when you gone but when you home in addition to providing play and exercise
you need to understand that he will be only happy if you let him be near you
The Belgian need to know what you doing all the time
Hopefully you consider adopting because they great
