If the Lakers pony up for a max, he might leave. Trae has a player option in 2026, and if the Hawks don't do well he might end up getting traded before then. With Luka, Giannis, Wemby, Ja, and Ant, their franchises have too much invested in them. Only a catastrophe will convince them to leave. We will see with Banchero, but he's shown that he is a sure thing and Orlando will not make the same mistake again as they did with Shaq.
More likely some combination of Kyrie and Zion, which is doable, would be the move. A flawed younger player with a more established free agent the lakers can afford. Davis-LeBron-Kyrie-Zion and A defensive stopper would be good enough to satisfy the lakers fans. Kyrie is a free agent in 2025 and Zion has four years left on an ugly contract, one I’m sure New Orleans would consider moving if the price were right. And hundreds of other options. Luka seems thrilled and could have a handshake agreement with Cuban to move him if the Mavs were considering a rebuild. More likely he’d end up in Oklahoma. They can offer a dozen #1’s and that’s what it would take. Also a deal centered around Chet, Wallace and Wiggins and only if Luka became an injury risk, like an ACL or a serious Achilles injury. It’s not impossible but Cuban, like the rest of us, want a Steph-type career for him, a Dirk-esque happy ending. It would have to go terribly wrong.

I don't know why players would leave Texas to go to California. There's an instant 10% salary reduction for the 41 home games due to state and local income taxes.
And they've only signed 2 in their history. The Lakers don't actually get FA's just for being the Lakers a lot of their history is them getting guys through trades or having an actually really good team to attract role players. The way the nba works has changed as well guys don't need to be in big markets to be seen and respected anymore.
