    The super wide shot of them facing off by the river at the end of the movie, when the sun breaks through the clouds, might be one of the most breathtaking natural light shots I've ever seen on film. A mindblowing piece of cinematography.

    • @jasonvoorhees310
      @jasonvoorhees310 Год назад +9

      This film has so many of those types of shots. But yeah I agree that one is the best. Plus the shot thematically works given the scene between the two men. The sun coming through obviously represents justice or retribution. Especially given what happens next.

    Leo DiCaprio has taken this role not only seriously, but to the absolute extreme. It's all in his steel cold blue eyes. And he finally got his reward for his part in a film that's big, beautiful, bold and cold.

    In the true story glass didn’t have a kid and never looked for revenge. He was thought to be dead when they left him. The beginning battle was actually a famous battle, can’t remember the name of it. Glass did find Fitzgerald and retrieved his rifle later. You can find their real stories on line, these mountain men were extremely resilient.

    What's crazy is that the injuries the real life Hugh Glass got from that bear attack were soooo much worse than what was portrayed in this movie. His leg was totally broken, tons of bones broken, full chunks of flesh torn and fed to the bear cubs (including part of his booty!), and more. Yet this man really did drag, crawl, walk and successfully make his way back to that fort. An even more fun fact is that this particular story is not even the top craziest life event this man lived through! This guy was a tank with a crazy will to live. Until he got a little too old and let his guard down, that is, lol.

    Lubezki's cinematography is so strong and distinctive it practically trumps the signatures of the directors he's working for. Watch The New World, The Revenant, and Children of Men back to back and you might think he, not Malik, Iñárritu, and Cuarón was the director.

Late night showing and the coldest night of the winter, like -30 degrees and upon stepping out I was in the dead center of downtown Toronto, literally our equivalent of Times Square, and it was a ghost town. The darkness, the cold, the wind and the complete lack of people and cars fit the vibe so well

    The beginning of the movie, when the men were skinning the hide until they got ambushed. The scene where the men were running to the boats. That is the same scene where Prey was filmed, as well as Legends of the falls, Last of Us, Shanghai Noon. The river is called Bow River and that spot is used in numerous films & TV series.

    This is truly one of the greatest films ever made, I could care less if people found it boring because for me it wasn't. One of my favorites. This film for me is so inspiring for how the idea of "filmmaking" should be taught in film schools. The pure real light, the one shots and wides without cutting is perfection. It really makes me wish that Alejandro Iñárritu could direct an actual war film with his style. He's also a filmmaker I wish was doing more. Leo absolutely deserved his Oscar for this movie. Same with Hardy but he obviously didn't get it sadly.

    Hugh Glass was a real mountain man, from my knowledge they’ve changed his story a bit. He was forced into piracy for a few years before becoming a mountain man, lived with the Pawnee tribe for some time. When the bear attack happened Fitzgerald and Bridger agreed to hang back but after a week or so they both agreed to just leave him, so they didn’t get to far separated from the other group. Glass recovered and went on this insane journey of revenge. When he got to the camp Fitzgerald was already gone. He tried killing Bridger but stopped since once everyone found out Hugh was alive Bridger lost all credibility as a mountain man. Hugh went on Fitzgeralds path and finally found him but he had joined the army, the army wasn’t going to hand a soldier over to be killed by some random guy so Hugh told Fitzgerald he better stay in the army the rest of his life or he’ll find him and kill him.

    • @YokaiSteve
      @YokaiSteve 6 месяцев назад

      It wasn't because the army wouldn't hand over him at all, it was because killing a soldier was a hanging offense that Hugh had been forced to turn away. He'd have shot him the moment he found him if that wasn't the case.

    A lot of people thought the bear scene was exaggerated for the movie. The bear is cgi but the attack is not exaggerated. Bears knock you down, bite and claw at the arms and legs, then finish by biting the head or face. Brown bears in particular will continue mauling you until you are either unconscious or dead so the key is to not move and DO NOT make a sound.

My top 2 performances of him has to be Once Upon a TIme in Hollywood and The Departed. His performance in Django was also oscar worthy nearly all of his performances are. Tbh the revenant wasn't his weakest ofc but he really won here because there wasnt much competition (no offense to the other nominees)

    So glad Leo got his Oscar, but I actually think Tom Hardy gave the best performance in this movie. I realize it’s 100% subjective so it’s just my opinion. Leo has about 30 words of dialogue that aren’t subtitles for the first 2 hours of this movie so his performance is all off of physical acting. Where as Tom Hardy as AMAZING villain dialogue throughout.

    I remember a RUclipsr whose name I can’t remember…. Zack Anner seems right… had me in stitches because he said something along the lines of “And Leo is a method actor- so you know he f**ked that bear”
