In my latest video, "Lava Flow Trail at Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument," I take viewers on a unique and scenic hike just north of Flagstaff, Arizona. Despite being only a mile long, this trail offers a rich and immersive experience as it winds through the volcanic landscape of Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument. This trail is a must-do for anyone visiting the area, with its easy accessibility and profound natural beauty.
Starting with a paved path, the trail quickly transitions into a more rugged hike as it crosses over a bridge spanning a dramatic lava flow, known as a curtain of fire. This geological feature is a six-mile crack in the ground from which lava once flowed, similar to volcanic phenomena observed in Hawaii or Iceland. The trail leads hikers past the 8,000-foot tall Sunset Crater, a cinder cone volcano that erupted about a thousand years ago, dramatically influencing the landscape and visible as far away as Las Vegas and Tucson during its last eruption.
The hike delves deeper into the volcanic terrain as it descends into the Bonita lava flow, moving through fields of rugged a'a lava rock. This area, rich with geological history, offers a firsthand look at the raw power of volcanic activity. Along the trail, I highlight features such as a splatter cone and remnants of the 2022 Tunnel Fire that affected the park. The path continues past fenced areas where hiking to the crater's summit used to be allowed, providing educational opportunities and spectacular views without the impact of foot traffic on the delicate volcanic soil.
This trail not only offers stunning views of the volcanic landscape and distant peaks like Humphrey’s Peak but also features interpretive displays that enhance understanding of the area’s volcanic activity and its historical impact on local indigenous communities. The trail eventually circles back to the start, offering a brief but enriching glimpse into the volcanic history and natural beauty of Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument.
For anyone interested in volcanology, geology, or simply looking for a unique hiking experience in Arizona, the Lava Flow Trail provides a compact yet profound adventure, showcasing the dynamic and ever-changing earth beneath our feet. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or just looking for a quick and educational walk, this trail is well worth the visit.

Just did this hike yesterday and totally missed the staircase portion. At the beginning of this video, I almost felt regret but thankfully I did visit the AA trail, and it seems like it is very similar. Dig the bgm. Looking forward to hearing how you develop that side of your production process. Love your channel, Chris!

Duuuuude I’ve been planning on going on this trail around exactly the time you went because of the weather. I wanted to go when there was snow and this confirms it. Thank you for posting this! The quality is also great!

That looks awesome! I am going to have to put that one on my list now (I am a bit of a geology nerd). Out of curiosity, have you ever hiked "Big Obsidian Flow" at the Newberry National Volcanic Monument in Oregon? The monument is about a 2 hours drive north of Crater Lake, just south of Bend, and is an absolute moonscape surrounded by forest. It's quite surreal.

I've done some volcanic hikes near Bend, OR up around the Three Sisters Mountains. The Obsidian Trail is absolutely beautiful but requires a permit. Belknap Crater hike, which is part of the PCT, is crazy, just miles of trail across a huge lava field. Stunning scenery around there.

Yea the obsidian at Newberry is incredible. This nearby trail is one of my faves: ruclips.net/video/3h3ti5_Hv9M/видео.html. - last time I was there I saw a couple of mink
