Welcome to my detailed guide on hiking the South Kaibab Trail to Skeleton Point in the Grand Canyon. This video is your comprehensive resource, providing step-by-step instructions from the trailhead all the way to Skeleton Point. I'll cover essential tips on preparation, including what to pack, the best times to embark on your hike, and safety precautions to keep in mind. The trail offers challenging climbs and descents, but rewards hikers with some of the most stunning views of the Grand Canyon. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or setting out on your first Grand Canyon adventure, this guide aims to ensure you enjoy a safe and memorable experience.
Our first notable stop on the trail is Ooh Aah Point, aptly named for the reactions it elicits from hikers. Located just under a mile from the trailhead, Ooh Aah Point offers one of the first panoramic views of the canyon. In this section of the video, I'll show you what to expect when you arrive, from the breathtaking vistas to the practical seating areas where you can rest and hydrate. I'll also offer tips on capturing the perfect photo, as this is a spot you'll want to remember. Early morning hikes are particularly magical here, as the sunrise illuminates the canyon, creating spectacular photo opportunities.
Continuing down the trail, the next major stop is Cedar Ridge, which serves as a great midpoint for those who may not want to hike all the way to Skeleton Point. Cedar Ridge provides expansive views and a wider area for hikers to rest, enjoy a snack, and even access restroom facilities. In this part of the video, you'll get a closer look at Cedar Ridge's amenities and the surrounding landscape. I'll discuss the area's geography and how you can make the most of your stop here, whether you're looking to rest, take photos, or simply soak in the surroundings before continuing your journey or heading back.
Finally, we reach Skeleton Point, about three miles from the trailhead, which offers the first views of the Colorado River. From here, you can see deep into the inner canyon, and on clear days, the river is visible, winding its way through the ancient rock formations. This segment of the video will focus on what to expect at Skeleton Point, including the terrain, the lookout areas, and safety tips while navigating the edges. Skeleton Point is a turn-around point for many day hikers, as it offers a good balance of a challenging yet rewarding hike. I'll also touch on the importance of time management to ensure you can return to the trailhead safely before sunset.

Recently did this hike and also Bright Angel and wanted to simply thank you for these prep videos. I felt very well prepared and therefore REALLY enjoyed this EPIC hike with my gal pals. We are all between 58 and 65 yrs old and have amazing times hiking challenging alpine/elevation hikes around the world. The GC was another one from our bucket list!!! Again thank you for your clear and informative videos!!

Thanks for your great videos! What’s the best way to get to the South Kaibab trailhead for a really early start (before the busses are running)? You mention taxis as an option - how would I book one?

You can still drive to and park nearby the trailhead, right? Or are you now only allowed to take the bus or a taxi?

There's a small parking area about 15 minute walk away at 36.04596727811544, -112.08513189065273 but you can't depend on finding space.
