Took lots of breaks the last switch backs going up to the top about killed me. someday I am going to get down to the river that is my goal. thank you for your wonderful videos. This is my most favorite place to visit.
I hike a lot in the UK (permit permitting will be in GC come Oct 23) we have guys on YT here ie Scotland's Mountains, who are just so good you want hike with him, for sure this guy( very sorry dont know your/his name) falls into this category, great series of vids, rammed with information, thank you for taking the time to share,help and educate other visitors GCTV.

Agree. As a Geologist, I like to take people down the "top portion" of the Kiabab Trail. Getting below the rim is an entirely different experience. Ooh Ahh or the top of the Espanade Sandstone (Supai Group) is about as far as a novice wants to go (especially on a hot day). Beautiful views. The trail is VERY steep.

What a great summary and guide to Grand Canyon via south rim, I can’t wait to do this seemingly basic hike, although our real desire would be a phantom ranch overnight if you could ever get a permit. Thanks for posting. Going with the fam in a couple weeks. I really would like to hike down to Indian Garden but just don't think my knee will hold up for the hike back up. This looks more manageable and will at least give a taste of hiking the canyon.

Are some areas of the trail quite narrow? Much of this footage showed it to be a good width but there are some sections that has my heart in my throat, thinking I could never do it because it looked so dangerous.. again only on certain sections, mostly towards the start. An optical illusion maybe?
We just completed the hike past Cedar Ridge. Starting at 7 a.m. we made it to Ooh Aah point in 10 minutes going at a pretty good clip (not running, but a storm was predicted late morning). We were at Cedar Ridge in another 20 minutes. We decided to continue walking and made it to a big boulder (not quite to skeleton point. O'neill Butte?). We turned around and made it back to Cedar Ridge within 25 minutes. From Cedar Ridge to Ooh Aah Point, another 25 minutes. 20 more minutes to the warning (vomit) sign, then another 10 minutes to the trailhead. The entire trek down and back took 2 hours (stopping to take an occasional photo and to use the bathroom at Cedar Ridge). We would have gone further if we knew we could complete the hike that quickly, but didn't want to get stuck on the canyon if lightening occurred. Of course, the storm never came. 🙄 Fortunately, the temp stayed in the 60's the entire hike. We didn't need much water.
The Park operates 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Buses mostly run sunrise to sundown. Buildings are open roughly 9 to 5. Everything varies and actual times can be found on the park's website. But yes, to generally answer your question, everything will be operating in January.
I'm nervous about doing this one. There doesn't seem like enough room for people going in both directions, and certainly not enough to let a mule pass. Is the trail wider than it looks?
When mules are passing you must always find a nook to stand on the inside of the trail. I can't suggest you do something that you're not comfortable doing. The trail is most narrow in the beginning segment call "the chimney" after that if begins to widen more.
What is a good trail for a novice, not used to the thinner air? What do u mean by drink enough to pee before heading back up? Wouldnt that be extra torture.
I’m going in October. I’m just wanting to do very easy hike. I live at sea level lol so more concerned with the elevation change. Any suggestions for a hike that a toddler (me) could do? I’m 53 😂. But really just a hike that I can see the canyon and feel like I did a hike.
I would take the toddler along the "Trail of Time" you could start it by parking at the Yavapai Geology Museum and walking west, it's flat paved, and gives you views of the Canyon. It's also educational.
This was an excellent video and very informative. Amazing job! I’ll be going in a few days and still deciding between just taking Kaibab to skeleton point or taking kaibab all the way down to the river and up the bright angel. I see you have a video on that which I’ll tonight. Adding the Eiffel Tower in for reference was a really nice touch as I did that last year with ease. This year will be harder as I’ve gained weight and the December cold will not help which is what worries me about going all the way down to the bottom. What editing software do you use to add those bits in? Thanks so much for posting!
Know that if you choose to go down South Kaibab up Bright Angel this time of year you will park at the Backcountry Information Center Parking lot and need to catch the 8am or 9am "Hiker Express" shuttle to the SK trailhead. When you then pop-up the Bright Angel Trail it will be a short walk to your car. But don't miss the Hiker Express in the morning. I edit with Adobe Premiere but I've messing around with graphics to show the distance and elevation, I was pretty happy with how this one came out showing the height compared to structures, so I'd like to do something like that with a rim 2 rim or down and up. While doing long distance runs on islands, I had drank seawater to get some electrolytes, yet only in small doses. Human kidneys can only make urine that is less salty than salt water. Therefore, to get rid of all the excess salt taken in by drinking seawater, you would then have to urinate more water than you've been drinking. Eventually, you would probably die of dehydration unless you are able to drink some less salty water. Salt water is pretty taxing on the kidneys, it's just too much salt.

That is a great start, little by little build up your body's tolerance to the Canyon and it will be worth it.

I went on this trail a few days ago, we went slightly past the Cedar Ridge and back in 2 hours which was a pretty fun and scenic hike.

Is this recommended for a 12yo? She's an experienced hiker but those switchbacks with the straight drop are a little spooky.
