Appreciate this video! I’m doing the exact route in May (except I’m 53 and will be spending the night at phantom. I’ve been scouring videos. Yours is one of the best I’ve seen. Truly appreciate the detail in the elevation gains at each point to wrap my head around it. For a second I thought you were the guy who plays Felix in the show in the dark.
5 mins in, I see elevation info, geological era and strata info, archeology info, history of the trail, weather info, tips about the sunrise in the summer, man this is good. Doing this hike in 2 weeks, camping at Mather.
I’ve watched this video 5-6 different times. Used it for research before making my own South Kaibab-Bright Angel day trip. Made that trip in fall 2021. My 17 year old son wants to do the same trip this fall 2023. So I’m preparing again by gathering knowledge months away from our hike. I just wanted to say thanks for making this extremely well done and informative video. This is perfect for teaching people what they need to know. This trip could very well be deadly if a person isn’t prepared properly.
We did that during the winter of 2020 and there was ice and black ice all over the trail. We WENT down Bright Angel and had heavy packs due to having to bring lots of water planing to come up Kaibab Trail (there is no water there) plus having raincoats and light and extreme weather arctic jackets and gloves plus warmers food and batteries. We could not go fast due to the slippery conditions. It was 3 pm by the time we got to Panthom Ranch. There was a blizzard coming the following day, so we decided to climb back up through the night. The snowing turned into icicles and we had to use ski masks and eye protection. We had very good flashlights and were able to see through the snow and heavy winds at the Altiplano of The Tipoff. We thought staying at the little shack in The Tipoff but the walls were made of chicken wire and the heavy subfreezing winds and snow were going through the walls and hitting us very badly while were rested there for about 30 mins. We decided to continue. It was scary with limited visibility by the skeleton point but we decided to continue all the way coming back up at around 5:30am of the following day. We took a taxi to the parking lot passed the Village and went to sleep at the hotel all day and night. We just got up to eat and were glad we made it back on time to skip the blizzard that hit very bad. The morning of the following day after sleeping at the hotel a few miles down from the Village was very nice with snow all over. We drove to Meteorite crater and then to Phoenix and flew back to Houston. During the summer with nice weather, you do not have to pack all the heavy clothing and emergency flashlights and batteries. It was worth the adventure. This time we are going during the summer and hopefully we do not have to carry so much stuff, but I think it is not worth to do it all in one day since it is exhausting and you cannot really stop and enjoy the scenery. We are planing to go down, stay the night and come back up the next day, this time coming back up light on water since we are coming back up by the Bright Angel Trail and there are several water points on the way. We have a water purifier, just in case, and we can get water from the stream. There is NO water in the Kaibab Trail!!! If you are planing to climb that route BRING PLENTY OF WATER!
Hello there! We finally did this hike 2 days ago !!!! Going down South Kaibab was hard -> can't wait to see the Colorado River. Going up Bright Angel was very strenuous-> can't wait to lay in my bed as i still feel pain for the next day....yet the sound of the river, the views and when you get to soak your body in that river made everything worth it. I have watched your vdo several times before we started this hike and its very useful and enjoyable. Thank you so much for all the information.
@@GrandCanyonTV it was about 112 °F by the time we got to the first rest area going up bright angel from the outdoor thermometer. Hikers were struggling to go up as most of us taking frequent breaks. It was one of the hardest hike for me for sure. What about you ? What hike was the hardest one ?
@@natpradachar9837 Wow. Glad you made it out. I had a similar experience in August of 2018. I had camped at Bright Angel Campground, and I do enjoy the bottom of the canyon in August because the creek and waterfalls feel really nice in contrast to that 110plus heat. My struggle had come on the way back up Bright Angel the next day. I ended up spending a few hours in the 1.5 mile rest house dumping water on my head and closing my eyes until I was ready to complete the hike. August is a great time to enjoy the cold river and cold creeks of the Grand Canyon, yet most locals would never go to the bottom in July or August.
Best Video that I watched... I am inspired to do the walk... I will do it on May 2022.... THANK YOU for this amazing video and historical lesson... Learned a lot!... you are the man........
I parked my motorcycle at the visitor center then walked to south Kiabab trail head , headed down to phantom ranch for lunch, then walked up bright angel trail. My Garmin tracked me for over 18 miles, in 7 hours 15 minutes, I was 68 years old. I trained for two weeks in Durango Colorado mountain biking , hiking, road cycling prior to Grand Canyon hike. Afterwards I felt like I ran a marathon.thank God for the shuttle ride back to visitors center
Thank you for this outstanding video. I always wanted to do this hike but only did some 14ers in Colorado. I am now 78 and you have given me the opportunity to get a taste of what that would have been like. Loved it and the history and geology lessons! Excellent job!
Just did this same hike yesterday. Your commentary was excellent. We learned lots of facts that we wish we knew before we made the hike. We took about twice the time that you took. Not in the best of shape... it was brutal.....but an awesome experience. Thanks for sharing.
That's great, it always hurts afterwards (even though I've done it dozens of times) I find as time goes on I start to miss that pain, and then you've just got to do the hike again.
This is a gem of a find, and I’m planning to do this run/walk in July with my brother. Do you by any chance have a gpx of your route that I could upload to my garmin fenix 6 for navigation? Well done on this, again.
Thank you! Sorry but I'm not so up on the tech. You might be able to find someone who would have that on one of the "Grand Canyon Hikers" facebook pages or reddit. The trails I used here are pretty well defined. Trails like the tonto, hermit, and grandview can get confusing because of rock slides, but South Kaibab and Bright Angel are clear cut.
@@GrandCanyonTV Thank you very much for the quick and concise response. I'll be sure to watch your video a couple more times before putting the final plan together. A real gem was when I went back to the video today and opened up the information, all the additional detail. You're the man!

Glad it was helpful! You will just have to check conditions, usually there is ice packed down in March from snow that fell where the sun isn't shining, and that can sit until as late as May.
Great video. i was just there (March 10-12th, 2020), but just did the South Rim - didn't go down in. After watching your video, though (and another) I think I can do the South Kaibab as I am afraid of falling from heights and while a few sections looked dicey, I think I could do it. Yes, as you can see it is indeed steep at certain points, yet a lot of the trail has a nice shoulder to it. A trick you can use if the heights stir you, is to hike down before sunrise so you are only seeing the trail in by your headlamp. Also you could hike up in the evening or early morning as well.

This video was awesome! I loved all of the information you provided! I almost felt like I was hiking with you. I am planning on hiking to Phantom Ranch in November, staying overnight and then hiking back up. Watching and listening to you made me feel so much more comfortable regarding my upcoming adventure. I noticed you filling up with water before hiking up. I am curious to know what was the blue container that you filled up with water. Thanks for the info and keep hiking!
That was my water "bladder." The type that has a hose to drink out of. They are convenient to have. It's a good idea to have two containers for carrying water just in case one would leak.
@@debbie4516 I hike with 2 litters or 2.5 or 3 litters bladder. Mine is a Camelbak brand and the bladder came with the Camelbak backpack so it fits perfectly in there.

Great vid! Just did Tanner->Escalante->Hance->Grandview and now I'm looking for something to take the wife and kids on.
Awesome route, and probably got "interesting" with the weather.
Awesome! These trails are the setting for the book, Long Road to Mercy, by D. Baldacci. A mystery set in the Grand Canyon.
@@GrandCanyonTV Thanks for the quick response. Do you know which brand/model/size it is? Also, does it only work with a specific daypack?
@@debbie4516 I hike with 2 litters or 2.5 or 3 litters bladder. Mine is a Camelbak brand and the bladder came with the Camelbak backpack so it fits perfectly in there.
Impressive!
I’d love to see this format of video done with other national parks. Good overview of geology and hiking ~
Maybe I’ll make one of the Everglades. Elevation 0. Wet. evidence of ocean
