  • Rim2Rim2Rim - Kim Levinsky, April 15, 2021 (solo, complete loop)
    I started at 4am on Thursday April 15, 2021 by parking at the South Rim Market. From there, I ran to the Bright Angel Trailhead and down the BA Trail. After running across The Box, I ran up the North Kaibab Trail to the North Rim. Then I ran back across The Box and took the South Kaibab Trail up. Once I got out of the canyon, I ran back to my car at the South Rim Market. Final Stats: 54 miles and 12,200 ft gain and 12,200 ft loss. 17 hours and 55 minutes.

    This is incredible. I'm not a runner, but I love hiking/backpacking. The most I've ever hiked in 1 day was right at 20 miles with 4k ft. elevation change, and I was worn out. Can't imagine how much training it takes to get to your level.

Brings back memories of my trip (with my kids) to the Grand Canyon in july 2019. We only did hike part of the South Kaibab trail because it was way too hot. And we were not trained in hiking with elevation (living in the Netherlands which highest point in the whole country is just 100 ft above sea level) . I've seen a lot of rim2rim hikes. Really excellent video and really great hiking/running! I've done the R2R2R twice, but with the intent of finishing in under 24 hours, so no running. Alas my first try, in 1981, SK-NK-BA, took 30 hours. [But, I walked from the North Kaibab trailhead to the Grand Canyon lodge and bought lunch and then fell asleep for an hour in the Sun Room! :-) ] My second try was two years later from the North Rim - NK-SK-BA-NK where I had a friend pick me up at the South Kaibab trailhead, run me by Yavapai to grab a quick bite for dinner and then dropped me off at the BA. That one took 26 hours. [I took a 4 hour nap on a rock just before Cottonwood Campground at about midnight.] By the way, the San Francisco Peaks (at Flagstaff) are barely visible in the background of your pictures/video from the Coconino Overlook. Congrats!!

I am always super-impressed at those that can do a R2R, let alone a R3. I was chuckling as I was watching because I knew the SK was going to kick butt. In hindsight wouldn't you maybe have gone down SK and up BA (more water sources, less gradient)? Pretty cool though and you should be proud of your accomplishment.

    Hi Kim, what an awesome accomplishment and you stayed so positive through it all, even when you had to hoof it back to your car, which took a little bit of time (17:11 coming out of the ditch to 17:54 when you made it to your car...I would have been crying like a baby or curled up in a fetal position waiting for someone to feel sorry for me!) I can say that because that is how I was feeling when I finished the R2R2R a couple years ago. It's been almost a year since your R2R2R, any plans on going back and doing it again...to get the lemonade! If so, you need to make another recording of your trek to keep other folks who are thinking of doing the ditch inspired! Strong work Kim!

      Thank you Steven! I brought a turkey sandwich, granola bars, trail mix, several Spring Energy Gels (the 250 cal ones) and used Tailwind powder in my hydration pack for additional calories/electrolytes!

      @@kimlevinsky Sounds like you were well prepared. Looking at the Nutrition facts for Mountain Inn Breakfast Skillet, I noted there were something like 1500 mg of Sodium, 82 mg of Calcium, and 724 mg of Potassium, so that provides for electrolyte intake. I brought with me a small dish of sliced meat (Turkey/Ham) and a few slices satisfied for a meal. Slim Jims also helped. I suppose the issue is not only size (compact) but something that can be tolerated., Sounds like you were well prepared.

      @@StevenTorrey Those are some good ideas! I was doing a bit of running, so I'm not sure I could have stomach-ed the skillet. But I have used those for longer hiking efforts in the heat and they work well!! Congrats on your R3!!

    Hoping to do rim to rim to rim next summer.Hiked the route with a backpack and heavy camera,staying at the North rim for a couple of days in between last time.Each direction took about 10 hours with lots of stopping for photos.Traveling light and running it at a sensible pace should take a large chunk of time out of that.Walking the inclines is the sensible option.👍

    I don't know if this tip would help: after birth of my first child I was given dermaplast spray and dermaplast "pads" that you "crack" and they activate nitrogen. They're supposed to be pads, but maybe if you need a quick "cool" those pads are not supposed to activate until you "crack" them and I don't think they would "melt". If your muscles hurt or you get a sunburn I have found dermaplast spray is terrific and COLD. Maybe these two products would help hikers??

    Excellent video, great run! You're the kind of positive person who is so good to see on the trail.
    I've backpacked a lot in GCNP but never been to the North side (except to Phantom Ranch). Thinking about a R2R soon but I'm 60, so no R2R2R for me. One hangup is accommodations on the North Rim -- hard to come by normally and harder with COVID. I wonder if any of the shuttle services would deliver a duffel bag from the South to the North so I could send my heavy pack ahead.

    Epic Kim! Love your 'tude and commentary the whole time. "...they looked like the walking dead." LOL...so true! Train people! Train harder than you think you could possibly need, cross-train on a mountain bike, and don't let up!! Getting in all the creeks is absolutely crucial. Keep your core temps low!! You're a beast Kim! AWESOME JOB!

    Awesome vid. Thanks for sharing. Im planning on doing this same hike in a few weeks and i had a couple of questions. How much did your pack weigh? How many calories did you pack? Do you think the weight of packing a mirrorless camera would make it significantly more difficult? Any last minute advice before i embark on the hike? Thanks again.

    • @kimlevinsky
      @kimlevinsky  Год назад

      Hi there, my pack weighed about 12-13 pounds. I don't have a saved list of all the food that I packed, but I know that I didn't pack enough. I wish I had packed a few pb&js and turkey sandwiches. I was tired of bars by the end of the dady... I'm not sure how much a mirrorless camera weighs so I can't speak to that! Enjoy every step and if you're going when it's super hot, take a minute at each water access spot (creeks and spigots) to soak your head; it helps with the heat!

      Hi Mark! I don't have exact quantities, but I remember packing: bobo bars, trail mix, spring energy gels, lara bars, turkey sandwich, tailwind... I used the Avenza map and downloaded the free "Grand Canyon Hiking Map" by US National Park Service... my watch was a COROS Pace and has since been updated to COROS Apex. Hope that helps!

    I was surprised when I saw that people run rim to rim, but THIS is something else! Wow. Do runners like you also run uphill, or only down and flat? I'm hiking South Kaibab to Bright Angel with an overnight at the canyon - I'm worried about hiking out in the dark and coming across a mountain lion 🙈 How did you feel about potential animal encounters while being alone, especially in the dark?

      Thanks for the kind words! When I am alone on trail where I know there is the potential for wildlife encounters (like bears) I'll usually play music from my phone so they'll hear me before we see each other.

    • @kimlevinsky
      @kimlevinsky  Год назад +1

      Hi! It’s impossible to replicate the South or North Rim climb because we don’t have climbs anywhere near that long. The most you’ll find around NJ would be Mt Tammany at the Delaware Water Gap and then a few mountains in the Hudson Valley- Bear Mountain, Anthony’s Nose, Popolopen Torne. The trade-off is that all of those are very technical compared to the GC.. but better then nothing! You can go further north to the Catskills or Adirondaks for bigger climbs… otherwise, treadmill incline hiking or the stairclimber at a gym could also work!

      Thanks for your kind words! I run ultras pretty much year round, so it's a lot of back-to-back runs. I'm training for the Tahoe200 right now, so I've been focusing on a lot of hiking to get good vertical. I think if you're prepared to suffer and have the endurance to be out there for a day, you can do it!
