    Congratulations on your amazing hike! Four days after you did this hike I completed my first rim2rim at 66 years old :). It was my first hike of over 20 miles in my life and like you I'm very proud of myself for going through with it! I hiked down the South Kaibab and up the North Kaibab. I'm not gonna lie, the last 5 miles was tough and I too was hallucinating a little. Luckily my wife was there to drive us to our hotel in Kanab Utah an hour and a half away :).

I often watch hiking videos on trails that we are considering doing ourselves to get a sense of what’s involved and I feel like your video did that for us and love the comments about what you’re experiencing, difficult areas and things to consider. Yes I plan on doing south Kaibab to north next year! I did the detour to ribbon falls on my north rim to south rim hike last year, it was so beautiful. The only reason I didn’t do it this year was pure mileage. 50 miles already seemed like a lot to do, I didn’t want to add a detour. • @trailandtravel
      @trailandtravel  6 месяцев назад

      @ClaySTL the early start definitely help. Otherwise you are hiking the biggest climbs in the heat of the day, which is brutal! If you can I’d recommend getting a 3L water bladder that you can fill up instead of the frozen water bottles, it will take up a lot less space and you can refill at the water taps (as long as they are on, another thing to check on before you go). I understand your worry with hiking in the dark, but if you have a good headlamp you’ll be fine. And most likely you won’t be alone!

    I see at 39:30 ish your setup at Mathers campground. Do you have video or some details that you can share regarding your camping gear I see that one of your duffel bags had a tag on it. I assume you were able to get your camping gear shuttled to Mather's campground or to the south rim lodge? I must have watched your video about a dozen times already as I am working on the logistics for 4 for this adventure. I'm planning late September early October. My wife and friend want to do the rim to rim to rim But they also want to take it all in visit the waterfall I'm hoping I could do the adventure within three to four days. I've shared your video with a quite a few of my friends awesome content. Thank you.

      Here is the link to my video where I talk about the logistics of doing rim to rim to rim. Yes I got my duffle bag shuttled across from north rim to south and back the next day. This adventure definitely takes a lot of planning! I have also done ribbon falls on a previous trip (ruclips.net/video/5olmTzZMgbs/видео.html). It's beautiful I highly recommend, it will only add a mile(ish) to your hike. As far as gear I packed as if I was going to camp on the south rim, I brought many of the items that I typically take backpacking. Tent, Sleeping Bag, pad, inflatable pillow, cook set + Fuel, extra food, electrolytes, power bank + cords, extra clothes + socks. I think that was pretty much it. If you're planning on backpacking it I could try to pack light. The more weight you carry the more difficult the elevation gain and loss will be.I also have videos where I pack for backpacking trips, that may be helpful to give you an ideal of my gear set up. (ruclips.net/video/u_pta4yTCoI/видео.html). I hope this was helpful! Good Luck on your trip!

    I don't understand why you would do rim to rim to rim, only to hike a big part of it in the dark. You missed out on the views on the second leg of the trip. I guess it was just an endurance feat, but I sure wouldn't have done it this way. What's the point of hiking the Grand Canyon if not to see it?!

    • @trailandtravel
      @trailandtravel  6 месяцев назад +3

      This was the second time that I had hiked rim to rim. I did get to a lot of the beauty in the Grand Canyon and there was only an 8 mile section of this trail that I didn't get to see. I plan on doing rim to rim again this year from south to north so I get to see this section. I don't think most people could do this hike even if they tried. So Im really proud of this accomplishment despite your reaction. Have you ever done this hike before?

    Great job. That being said, hiking the larger part in the dark somewhat defeats the purpose of hiking the Grand Canyon and the spectacular views it offers. I believe you have the capacity completing an R2R2R (starting from the south rim), within 20 hours, doing the larger part of the hike in daylight; hiking early June). This was my second time hiking rim to rim. I’ve been surprised with all the people who have had something to say about me doing part of the hike in the dark. lol i think that it the only way to cover this much mileage is one go is to hike in the dark. I am planning on doing R2R south Kaibab to north rim this fall - mid October. So I can experience that part of the trail I missed.
