And yes, the video portraits the american culture of fear and hypnotise of the media.

You guys were on point. The song is about how the use of social media has brought out the worst in us. The third line of the song is "The black man will get you" So it makes the white suburbs worried they start building walls and then arming themselves. It is a dig on American culture at this point in time.
Myself, I honestly believe "The Black Man" does not refer to the race here. Maybe because different people come from different backgrounds and see different implications, but in my point of view "Black person" is supposed to represent a public threat with word "black" depicting "Diabolic, evil, out of dark". This general view can allow the song as a whole to be applied to American society. But in addition and importantly, it also depicts a modern Russian people who are constantly told by media to obey and follow their leader's position, because otherwise all those "public enemies" will tear their country apart.

There is no way they don't know that "schwarzer Mann" translates literally to "Black man" in English. They play with double meaning, and particularly double meaning with words or pronunciations, all the time (and that kind of play with words is common in German). Like, I genuinely appreciate everyone who comments on this video to talk about the contextual meaning of the phrase in Germany, but a whole other - additional - layer of critique and meaning is missed by just abandoning the contextual significance of the English phrase in America, which this video also seems to be critiquing (among other things). I mean, the confections they're eating at the end are a German classic, which had a really, blatantly racist name until, I believe, about 30 years ago (plus or minus, someone please correct if I'm wrong). The people surrounded by razor wire under a big spotlight at the start and end of the video are actors of colour (which likely points to anti-refugee sentiment in Europe). Just like the actress that played Germania in "Deutschland", I don't think that was unintentional.
Even better: there's the meaning of the phrase in German, the meaning of the phrase in English, *and* there's a new meaning that arises when those two are considered together. Now *that* is powerful.

One of the best songs by Rammstein. B.t.w. according to wikipedia: "The word angst was introduced into English from the Danish, Norwegian, and Dutch word angst and the German word Angst. It is attested since the 19th century in English translations of the works of Kierkegaard and Freud. It is used in English to describe an intense feeling of apprehension, anxiety, or inner turmoil." In The Netherlands it's used as what in English 'fear' means.

No it wasn't. Neger translates to negro, not the n-word. Niger would fit too since its phonetically closer, you know like the country. Its just that the woke cancel culture mob is too dumb to understand language or nuance so that over hundred year old companies are shitstormed into changing the name of their brands. Like removing Uncle Ben cause can't have a black man being the face of a brand apparently.

I implore you to check out the translations of their songs. Be warned though, they have some twisted lyrics in many of their songs so if you're easily offended then Rammstein may not be your kind of band.
angst = fear and germany and we in the netherlands use the same word for being afraid.
Ok so the more I've watched the Angst video by Rammstein I think I've pieced it together. The songs called Fear and refers to the boogeyman. At the beginning the neighbors are all side by side mowing their lawns, having BBQ's and being cordial. As Til comes in he is in a stray jacket with cheerleaders. They wheel him into a machine and plug him in so he can be on everyone's TV and internet while cheering him on. Like how society cheers on whatever is popular at the time in the media. The next scene while the neighbors are watching the internet they are being sucked in by the information (as represented by some arm coming out of the screen and grabbing their face) and begin spending large amounts of money on security. Building walls, barbed wire and guns. All while the cheerleaders parade around and root them on while they do it. Once they begin shooting the cheerleaders go crazy and they fall into Til's head meaning they finally bought into everything he was saying and did as they were told. He now controls them. The ending scene is this group of masked men (death masks) simultaneously cutting their steak watching the show (the rich and powerful being the puppets and watching society destroy itself). When the band is playing throughout the video they have these skull masks all hooked up to wires again showing they are being controlled. At the end of the video you have immigrants sitting in a circle of barbed wire while watching Rammstein on a smart phone and Rammstein sitting in a house watching them on TV....representing how society watches everyone else but doesn't see themselves. It's kinda open to everyone's interpretation. The whole video is filled with references to today's society. Obviously the boogeyman is the media amd the media thrives on Fear hence the name of the track. Just what I picked up.
schwarzen Mann literally translates to “ black man” but, in german it is the equivalent of the boogie man. However, the “boogie man” in this song is “the government”.
Till or rather Rammstein refers many of their songs to German Folklore and Fairy Tales (fairy tales in Germany are not meant to have happy endings, they are a warning to children to behave.)

This is why we love Rammstein (Lindemann), whether its "Du Hast" or their new material!! This song is the "Boogeyman" is coming for you, in any form you fear! They are the ultimate industrial metal band, that takes you to the edge and kicks a lot of people in the balls. Lucky here to see them for the second time live, this time in Philly!! They are the best group ever!!
Angst means fear. Actually this song is about xenophobia. We had a refugee crisis in germany in 2015, with lots of africans coming to germany. Till sings "wer hat Angst vorm schwarzen Mann", which means:"who is afraid of the black man". At the end they eat a candy which is called chocolate kisses here. These are some kind of chocolate covered marshmellows. They were used to be called "N***** kisses here". Not anymore, there was a lot of debate that this is racist. The lawn mowing, barbecuing guys are a portrayal of the "old white conservative men" being afraid of foreigners. The video uses the colours white, red and black. These are the colours of the Reichsbürger-flag. An old german flag used before World War 2, which is still used by many so called Reichsbürger. A group of people who are racist, spreading conspiracy theories on the internet. They don't accept germany as a nation as it is today, they hate americans and think germany is still occupied by the allied forces. So you could say they are kind of the same people as those confederation flag people you have in the us. Actually this song is very german, with a lot of imagery you only get if you know a bit about current german politics. Rammstein of course aren't racist. But as they always like to do, they are holding a mirror into the face of society. They wanna shock by showing you the ugly truth about what is going on. And I think someone has to do so. Rammstein themselves held upn"Refugees welcome" - signs on some of their concerts.
Beside all of that, there is some kind of double meaning. It's also about brainwash on social media, and "black man" also can be understood as boogeyman, which is used as a metaphor here, to describe fear. But in the end of the day, this is very real and about current politicsm

Rammstein is ALWAYS a win. Their studio music is always 1000% fire and their live performances are 2nd to virtually none. If you EVER get a chance to see them live, take that opportunity. You won't be disappointed.

This video is definitely deep. The way I view it is that in America, society easily consumes the media & everything it shows or sells to you. Fear, chaos, division. You get controlled by it & that alone contributes to fear. Fear enables people to do drastic things & the media motivates it by feeding it. Key parts; where the computer screen sucks in there faces, cheerleaders encouraging everything just as the media will always do, selling bricks to the members in a sense of selling division, the guns being given to the members to destroy themselves, we're watching each other destroy one other no matter how isolated we are; rich or poor. The only solution was to destroy the TV, destroy the media, destroy the control. That's my interpretation of the video lol.

The song is about how people get infected by the fear spread by social media and some people on tv and how it can lead ordinary, peaceful people to irrational hatred.
"Schwarzer Mann" (black man) has a double meaning in German. In old tales and a very old game for children, the black man is comparable to the bogeyman. The game is about one child being the bogeyman and having to catch the other children. The catcher says before that, "Who's afraid of the black man?", which is the same phrase that Rammstein uses several times in the song.
But Rammstein wouldn't be Rammstein if they didn't use the double meaning of the term black man for current topics. Black man can also be translated quite directly and then has the meaning of people with black skin color.
Fear of migration and of refugees unfortunately plays a big role in our world and people are becoming more and more drastic and heartless in their demands when it comes to preventing migration. Again, social media plays a very big role in spreading the fear.
If you look at the video further, you can see how irrational fear leads people to trust no one and to protect themselves with walls, surveillance cameras and weapons. Thus, a normal neighborhood suddenly becomes something that resembles a military security zone, until the fear takes such an upper hand that everyone wants to destroy each other.
At the very end of the video you can see the black people again, how they are fenced in the barbed wire and the neighborhood feels safe enough again. While the band sits on the sofa and watches the fenced-in refugees, they eat "chocolate kisses", which used to be called "Negerkuss" (Negro kiss) and which some people still call that today. So this is another allusion to the racism that still plays a role in many people's lives.
When Till breaks the TV at the end, you can see with each blow how more color returns to the picture. I interpret this to mean that we shouldn't let ourselves get so infected by fear-mongering and instead bring more color back into our lives by stopping focusing on other people's lives and simply enjoying our own lives.

The way I understand this (I'm not German but danish), so if I'm wrong please correct me. Angst(fear) from "Schwarzen Mann" is fear of the "Boogie man" or something along those lines.
The way I see it the song is about "fear of that we don't know, or those we don't know". And have a someone on TV/Internet telling us that we should fear them, fear those living next door.
Rammstein is an awesome band. Been a fan since their first album came out of nowhere. When they do any song in English it doesn't have the same impact.

One big clue is in the phrase "Wer hat Angst vorm schwarzen Mann?" It's a children's game that I believe you'll know as well, "Who's afraid of the boogeyman?". But as is often the case with Rammsteins lyrics there is subtext, "schwarzer Mann" literally translates to black man and is one of those common language phrases that are tinged in racist roots. Same story with the candy they eat at the end that was commonly known as N-word kisses. In german the word used is not quite as negatively loaded as in english but you get the idea.
So they are asking both, "who's afraid of the boogeyman?" and "who's afraid of the black man?" while the people are starting to wall themselves in because of the fear spread by the media. And in the end you can see the reality on the TV, the boogeyman the media wants them to be afraid of. Some poor migrants that have nothing and are already surrounded by danger.
So you already got the media spreading fear and brainwashing the people but the other big point of the video is highlighting the reactions in europe to the Syrian refugee crisis between 2011 and 2017 where an estimated 22 million refugees flooded into europe. And it basically sparked or re-ignited a lot of the nationalistic movements around europe that wanted to implement measurs to protect their borders from the refugees.

Well, it's basically about populism and the way to control by spreading fear, also it's about the way we let us influence by the constant consumption of online media, the cheerleaders are symbolic for the marketing, the way we are shown, that we need all the guns, fences or whatever... Fuck that :). I'd actually recommend every rammstein song/video, if possible with subs for you to understand:). Also, i saw them live 3 weeks ago, ha! :)
Your interpretation of the song/video was the closed to the truth I seen by now. Great work! But Spin already says the correct meaning. Somemore views inside the video: The are sitting in a circle. Because a circle is round. It has no ending or beging. It's difficult to break out of a circle and change. Or is allowed to change (pour black people in barbed wire, which can only see the life of the rich in there mobile). At the end Rammstein is eating a typical german candy, which was called "Negerküsse". In englisch Negro kisses. After Till destroyed the television at the end, the people get more colorful. Life is getting more colorful. But colorful also means more races (not only white, there is also yellow, black, orange). More things to think about!

This is a double entendre. While "Schwartzen Mann" is the German term for the figure we call the "Bogie Man", it literally translates into English as "Black Man".

Great reaction. You were pretty much on point with some points. But it is working for any 1st world countries in my opinion. You spreading the idea of the song most likely when you paint the picture of american society and norms representing all 1st world countries. The song is about the fear of the black man / boogeyman which in my thoughts is synonymously for the fear of the unknown. This could also be refugees or the direct neighbour. There is no scale or rather this works on every scale. And it is about the media and partly also the goverment which is "cheering" up the fear of the unknown. There is a lot of word play again in the german language. "Wer hat Angst vorm schwarzen Mann?" mean "Who is afraid of the black man/boogeyman?" It was a text line out of the childs play where you run and hide. This shows that you get indoctrinated certain forms of angst/fear in your life, by your parents, by the media, by the goverment, etc. I could write so many more lines about it but the essence is said.

Very short help:
Angst = Fear
He tells about the fear that is being fed straight from the cradle -> The boogieman will get you (if you do wrong - already preached by the father). In German, the boogieman is (was) defined as "der schwarze Mann" (translates to "the black man" - although not meant in a racial but rather obscure sense). He then continues to further describe this fear - visually linking it to xenophobia, taught and constantly repeated by the media. The cheerleaders represent the business around it - through the constant fear, the business of fear thrives, managing to sell the people all sorts of things (even lethal weapons) - but as accompanied by the lyrics, it shows that in the end, they turn against each other and are consumed by their mutual fear.
PS: with every hit that Til inflicts upon the TV, more color (=reality) comes back into the picture. You do the math...
PPS: Read the lyrics (and their translation) in advance - your jaws will drop even more.
Also, so far, i haven't seen any reaction, where someone recognized, that they sampled the islandic football chant in the song, and I'm not a football fan haha...

"Der Schwarze Mann" is an old German boogeyman. As others have translated: "The Black Man" (original meaning has nothing to do with the colour of someone's skin).
When I grew up in Germany we played a kids' game called "Wer hat Angst vorm schwarzen Mann" (which is also part of the lyrics in the song). The boogeyman will stand at one end of the playing field and the rest of the players at the other end. The boogeyman will yell "Who's afraid of the black man?" and the other players will yell back "Not us!". Boogeyman: "And when he comes?" Players: "Then we'll run!"
The boogeyman and the players run toward each other. The players' goals are to reach the other side. The boogeyman's is to convert the others to boogeymen by touching them. Everyone touched by him will turn into a boogeyman themselves. Both teams are now at opposite sides of the playing field, and the whole thing starts again - only with more boogeymen. Try being the last surviving player! It's terrifying! As far as I know, it's quite an old game.
You nailed the meaning behind the song :) I believe it also critizes the fear of immigrants, trying to keep foreigners and refugees out by barbed wire.

I think they're eating a german desert, similar to a walnut whip in the UK, like chocolate shells full of sweet cream - certainly sounds like walnut whips when they're munching on them :D - they're fkn delicious.
The end...The TV sofa scene with the refugees in the barbed wire...actually means that our one is literally being trashed by the media. And that the TV only spreads fake news in the circles of conspiracy theorists. Basically, the song shows all the fears of the people. Partly it's about unfounded fears with prejudices, and on the other hand it's about real fears like the father for example. Definitely a very complex song with many interpretation possibilities.
The lyrics are about the boogeyman and people being indoctrinated with fear of the unknown from childhood on, but the German boogeyman is literally called "the black man", so it plays on demagogic rhetoric, racism and xenophobia. The video further expands on the message as Lindemann's character, an insane person, is brought out by the smile-faced cheerleaders, who gather more and more money, the more afraid the people are. They watch Lindemann on their TV sets, speaking from his podium with the divided space they're living on as a logo on the front, pointing to nationalsm, and invoking fear of "the other" to a degree, where they feel only safe by themselves, completely shut off.
The snacks they are eating in the end are "Schokoküsse" ("chocolate kisses"), which used to be called "negro's kisses" in German, making it unmistakably clear what they are talking about.

There is a popular german childrens game, which is very old. It is called: "Who's scared of the black man?"
A class, for example, selects one person, who is supposed to be "the black man". Then you position that single person at one end of the sports hall (or what have you), and the rest of the class is placed on the opposite side.
Then the single person shouts: "Who's got fear of the black man?"
And the whole group shouts back: "Nobody!"
The single person then shouts: "And when he comes?"
So the group replies with: "Then we run!"
Now the game begins, and it is basically tag. If, or when the single person catches one person, that one person will then be the new "Black man".
I think they are playing with a double meaning. Typically rightwing extremist are scared of strangers, and therefore tend to hate them. I think the song is probably about migration and ultra-conservative fear.
And I find it funny how the video also shows ultra-conservative hatred against so called mainstream media.

The rest of the lyrics depict something similar to what Smokey was talking about. However Rammstein has alluded that it’s basically a tale of a German Folklore. The black man is actually the bogeyman there is a more profound meaning I’m sure but in essence that is what he’s talking about. Be good or the bogeyman will get you. Again great reaction guys. Angst translates to Fear in German. You would think like Angst in English which is more like anger, but it kind of changes the perspective when you know it means fear not anger.
While there is alot of symbolism in their videos that can go many ways, I feel that this one is very much a singular message.
What happens when you let a singular voice pump you full of fear and anger and how the only thing it leads to is self destruction.

Then, in the video they were glued to the internet and started building walls and hurting their neighbors. Lastly, in the end is two African Americans being contained which is what is happening now.

You asked at the end of the video what Rammstein are eating.
It's called "SchokoKuss" (litteraly "Chocolate Kiss") , but untill the 70's-80's, it got another name....
A bit offensive nowadays I would say.
Wikipedia that, and you'll know what I mean...
Angst comes from the germanc tribes who invaded England. Old Anlgo-Saxon. We in The Netherlands use it's also. In my country it means fear from something that's about to overcome you.

Notice how it's mostly black and white with the occasional red, and the colors only come back in the end when he breaks the TV.
My thoughts on this:
1. The song is about how certain "leaders" want to afraid people to control them. In the video, this is visualised by the red wires.
2. The world the people in this video are living in, is just black and white, no grey. It can be understood as a reference to the simple minded people who are for example voting for politicians who are telling them exactly this black/white view (WE are good, THEY are bad). Also, the band is dressed up as the stereotype of this kind of conservative people.
3. "Der schwarze Mann" (The black man) is a german synonym for a creepy, ghost-like evil. As in the first verse of the song, children are often told "to obey, or else the black man will get you". It can be translated to boogey man in english, but like often, there is another meaning in this context. As said, the video is about leaders who are seeding fear of anything foreign in peoples minds. So, the phrase "black man" can also be interpreted literally, namely refugees. In my opinion, it is a reference to the migration crisis in 2015 in Germany. Or just think of the plans for a wall on the Mexican border...
4. About the guns: Yes, from a American point of view, you may be right. But I think Rammstein just wanted to show, how permanent fear can escalate: first, you are fine with your neighbours, then buliding higher and higher walls, and at last even fighting your neighbours, althought they have nothing done, it's just the fear in your mind. In the end, the whole society collaps.
Side note: all members of the band grew up in the GDR, so they know how it feels living in a state that wants to control every aspect of your live and threatens you with "the others".

English is actually a Germanic language, which is why a lot of words we use are derived from German dialects. For example the word "kinder" which means "children". Making the work "kindergarten" which translate as "children garden".

My interpretation is:
life was peaceful as long as the media didn't stir up fear. In the end, the fear was so great that people no longer want to listen to the media because the media only spreads intimidating content. People build walls out of fear and shoot at each other through the media, this way causing the whole system to collapse.
The two women in the circle of barbed wire see how the band sees them. One can interpret this in such a way that people in poor countries or even in war zones do have technology like smartphones etc. today and can see how the rich, peaceful West sees and evaluates them. Although they maybe cannot reach us physically and cannot send messages either, they see our behavior, also with regard to them (take an international public debate for example the topic climate change and its consequences such as poverty, migration and displacement).
When Till notices this, he smashes the TV. Once the TV gets destroyed, the picture goes from black and white to color. Ironically, the dominant color then is red, which represents fear from the start. So in the end that self-isolation from the media only fuels fear further.

I find it interesting that in German the word angst means fear. Essentially this whole song and video outlines the lengths people will go to in giving up freedom for safety..even if the threat is imaginary. Schwartzenmann literally translates to Black Man..but it is the name for what Americans would call The Boogeyman, Freddie Kruger etc.
