Yet To Come (2-minute hymnology)

  • The lyrics of Yet to Come are largely based on the old Fanny Crosby hymn, to God be the Glory. It’s a song of praise and thanksgiving for the blessings we have as followers of Christ, but it also acknowledges that everything is not perfect now, that God’s story is not complete, and the best is yet to come.
In the bridge of the song we sing, though it seem like His glory is hidden, though the enemy tempt us away, know the end of the story is written, and we’re waiting to turn the page.
The Apostle Paul tells us in Romans 8:18 that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
God has already won, so the present must’ve seen in light of that. Most of us tend to focus way too much on our short physical lives, just Delong with life or even enjoying God’s blessings. Although it’s also possible to err in the other direction and end up not participating in the “good works” that God has prepared for us to do right now! (that’s Ephesians 2:10)
Christ bridges that gap. He is both eternal and physical. And, as we sing in this song, our praise and thanksgiving should be focused primarily on Christ, who yielded His life, an atonement for sin, and calls us to follow Him.
This song shares a lot in common with the song, “Great Things”, both in terms of form and content, so I don’t often use them together in the same set. But the future focus of this song does make it a bit unique, and it can be valuable as a way to help the church embrace the long view. In verse 3, we sing
Great things He has taught us, great things He has done,
And great our rejoicing through Jesus, the Son,
But purer and higher our wonder will be, when Jesus’ face we see.
