  • Indescribable (by Jesse Reeves, Laura Story) is all about the awesomeness of God. It’s kind of ironic, ‘cause it’s all about describing someone who can’t be described. God is Holy, and that means that no matter how hard we try, we will never be able to describe, understand or know Him. He is completely other. AND YET! And yet, He chooses to reveal aspects of himself to us in scripture. And one way he describes His own indescribability is by asking questions.
That’s what we see in the verses of this song. Questions. And if you’re looking for the origin of a lot of these questions, look at Job chapter 38. God is asking the questions.
Questions can be powerful. And the authority and honor differential between us and God is infinitely greater than between kids and parents. We have no right to question God’s ways. If we could, He wouldn’t be God, because there would have to be some standard higher than Him. All we can do, is humble ourselves before him.
This awareness of God’s awesomeness is so crucial to worship, I like to use this song early in a worship set. It not only has sort of an energetic, rolling rhythm, which can be good to wake people up on Sunday morning, but more importantly, it helps to humble our spirits before the indescribable creator of everything.
