  • Who You Say I Am is a very bold declaration of a Christian’s identity in Christ. It is almost just a list of phrases based on things that the Bible says about our relationship to God. So, to sing “I am who you say I am” is to say I am choosing to believe that what You (God) say about me in Your word is true. Things like...
John 8:36 - So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
Jesus himself said that, and then in chapter 14, He tells us that he’s going to make a place for us in his Father’s house. The whole song really leans into the message of 1 Peter 2:9 You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
This song can be a powerful reminder of God’s love for us. The second verse is reminiscent of Ephesians 2:4-5; But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ-by grace you have been saved-
There’s definitely an element of Ra-Ra Christiany motivational empowerment that I don’t love in this song. But everything it says is true, and it is certainly valid and beneficial to pray (or sing) God’s promises back to Him. But let’s try to make sure we don’t just pray the promises we like. Okay? John 1:12 tells us we can be children of God, but John 1:11 reminds us that not everyone receives that gift.
That said, my hope is that a greater awareness of Who’s children we are will motivate us to live up to the family name, so to speak.

I was working on a comment on a famous channel just now and the 1 Peter 2:9 verse was just perfect for what I was getting at. Just happened that your channel was the next one in my watch list above the one I was commenting on. "Just happened" or maybe not. Either way, to God be all glory!
