  • Wonder (Joel Houston, Matt Crocker) is a song that’s ALL about heart transformation; the transformation that accompanies true repentance and faith. My pastor, before just about every sermon will pray something along the lines of, “Lord, may we not just get information, but may we experience transformation from the inside out”. This song is about declaring and embracing that transformation.
A scripture that comes to mind is a well known one: 2 Corinthians 5:17
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come."
Another passage that’s definitely referenced in this song is Ephesians 5:8-10, "for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord."
The second part of that scripture is less emphasized in the song, that the point of this transformation is to WALK differently, to discern and do what pleases the Lord, not just to feel some emotional relief. So, I always try to pair this song with something a bit more meaty, theologically.
Actually, when I first heard the song, I liked it, but I didn’t think it really met my qualifications for a worship song. Then along came a baptism service and Wonder was a special request by someone who was being baptized. The more I looked into it, especially in light of baptism, I just couldn’t say no. Yes the lyrics are a bit flowery, but do they only seem flowery because we have lost some of the wonder?
