- Today I dive into Scottish pop band The Associates. "Club Country" is the second single from their second studio album SULK released in May 1982. It stayed in the UK Album Chart for 20 weeks, peaking at No. 10, and was crowned the album of the year by British music magazine Melody Maker!

"at all's 2 words-could they be soldered as one?-therein lies the perfect pseudonym" insane lyrics
I was lucky enough to see Billy live a couple of times - small intimate venues & his voice was even better live.
Check out 'The girl that took me' - the stripped back version of 'take me to the girl'
So much goodness, but that Bass Work is just Stellar.
Awesome!
Fabulous! Billy McKenzie's voice is brilliant in this. It would be in my top 20 of 80s songs (along with plenty of a-ha!).
Bjork has said in interviews that Billy and the Associates were a massive influence on her. I was really touched by you saying they were genius and I thank you for that. I was about 14 when I first heard them in in 1982 and I bought every single on release day for the next couple of years. I even named one of my kids after Billy. The two of them produced a lot of diverse music post 84/85 and Alan went on to teach on the music business in Scotland.
You should check out his work with Yello, 'The Rhythm Divine' is a particular favourite, and although Billy recorded it, it was Dame Shirley Bassey of Bond theme fame that had a hit with it - Billy did provide backing vocals though.
Try their cover of Love Hangover from the same album which is awesome. The whole album was amazing and was a critical and commercial success.
Got to do the song Breakfast from the Album Perhaps to really appreciate Billy Mackenzie's vocals, the girl in the video is Martha Ladly who played with Martha and the Muffins.
Hello my Friends, react to JOURNEY "Don't stop believin" live in Houston 1981. Iconic song, great live performance with insane vocals & Amazing guitare solo. Thanks
So glad you're digging The Associates. The next album, Perhaps, is jaw-droppingly crazy good. Every single song is amazing. Check out the haunting Breakfast, Those first Impressions, Waiting For the Love Boat, Shampout, The Best of You, Don't Give Me That I Told You So Look. Hell, I could mention every song! And Mackenzie's version of Blondie's Heart of Glass is a knockout!
His version of Heart of Glass is definitely awesome 😎😎
I hope we get to hear more Associates!@@reactionextraction
My favourite from the two. That baseline ......
Their star started to fade when a major tour of America was offered but Mackenzie bluntly said"No" so co Associate Alan Rankine left the band in frustration as he was willing to play the game so to speak.
understood 😎
Ty and Dad, please do Shine On You Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd...!
You're fast redeeming yourself after Karma Police :)
Interesting, sounds familiar. Good but don't love it.
