She sings like that because she's playing Cathy, as a ghost, reaching through the window to Heathcliffe asleep in his room. She's also a dancer and choreographs all her songs to enhance them, it's a full art performance.

Words struggle to pay tribute to this. She wrote it when she was 18. It's based on the book and film; she is playing a ghost. It's heavenly in one sense but in another sense quite dark because it's a ghostly and forlorn apparition at .... the window. Anyway, song, performance, dance and lyrics it's all amazing to watch. It's a performance like few others.

This original was so unusual and so good. But she decided to record again this song many years later. For me, the second version is more dramatic... You can feel the passing-by of life (with happiness and sadness) in her voice. I think because of this prime of life, she was able to perform an extra range of vocals in order to show the nuances and the complexity of the story she delivered. The one of Kathy and Heathcliff... The characters of Wuthering Heights

Kate Bush is like a female David Bowie, artistic to the max, versatile, consistent and always pushing the boundaries, a phenomenal songwriter and performer. And like Bowie was into almost every kind of art she also dances and acts during her song performances to make the audience experience the song not just with their ears. Did I mention that she's a genius ? Nominated for the rock and roll hall of fame twice already, a shame that she's still not in.

She re recorded the song years later (it was included in her 'The Whole Story' album) with added vocals mostly featured during the instrumental outro of the songs but this version is better in my opinion.
Her record label EMI didn't want 'Wuthering Heights' to be the first single to precede the release of her upcoming album 'The kick Inside', they wanted 'James and the Cold Gun' which sounded more rock/upbeat. She fought hard to change their mind and won. The rest is history, the song shot to number one and her career immediately took off becoming one of the most talented artists this world has ever known. She is a genius!!

This was made when she was 19, it was her first hit in the UK. She composed the song based on her school studies of the novel and she also created the choreography for this, the dance style became more commonplace in the early 80s so for the late 70s it was still quite unknown and unique.

It has a new version of Wuthering Heights though. And her voice sounds so much better in the re-recorded version. In the original version her voice sounds so "squeaky"...when I heard it for the first time, I thought she was a child, when she recorded it. ;)

Wonderful Kate, this is one of the best songs ever written and of course she wrote it because she’s a genius. This song explains the story of Wutherin heights ( a very famous book) in a nutshell. It’s a heartbreaking love story, Kate expresses it perfectly. I don’t know if you did “a woman’s work” already or not. So many more great songs to pick from.

I remember a moment when I was at a store in Carnaby street London in 1987 and this one was played and I had to leave the store because I was crying. that is how much 16 y old me loved this song. 😁 And then I read the book that the song is based on. Heathcliff and Kathy was not very pleasant ppl, but daumn the story was good. And the story made Kate Bush herself make a song about it, so it is obviously amazing.

Love the way you go deep into the songs, musically and meaning. Kate is an amazing artist, check out her 'This Woman's Work', it's a classic that's been covered by so many other artists. ❤️‍🔥

Really, thank you so much for that reaction, Dereck. I really love that song so much. It's part of my favorite songs of all time. And Kate Bush is also a great singer with a so beautiful voice. So, thank you for that beautiful song, Dereck.

Thanks for the reaction! Here's a live clip of Kate performing "Wuthering Heights" while at the piano: ruclips.net/video/GaCDaXd5Xyw/видео.html . Another more unsual clip is this one, taken from the Efteling TV-special. It's a bit more obvious in that one what Kate is portraying - a ghost. I think that the line "Let me have it, let me grab your soul away" feels more sinister in this setting... The quality isn't the best, but what can you do: ruclips.net/video/JlxWW97JtbE/видео.html
I have some vague memory that Tori said that she's not _consciously_ influenced by Kate, although she has expressed appreciation for Kate's music. Personally I believe that she at least to some extent is, but Kate's influenced many musicians. And they're both kind of quirky in a way I find very endearing 😊
[Edit] Oh right, forgot to mention a bit of trivia. Every year on Kate's birthday, fans gather here in Sweden (and I assume many other places in the world) to reenact Kate's dance moves from "Wuthering Heights", affectionately called "the witch dance". 😀
