In this test match Ian Botham became the first cricketer in test cricket history to score a century and take ten wickets in the match. Botham scored 114 in the first innings and took a total of 13 wickets in the match. This was Ian Botham at his absolute peak.
Yes. Later on, he scored 208 in 229 balls in a Test against India at The Oval (I think) in the summer of 1982. And though he still had a few successes after that game, lan was never quite the performer that he was from 1977 to 1982.
He lost the ability to swing the ball, his inswinger especially so. He tried to bowl too fast and become an enforcer, bouncing batsmen out, but he wasn’t express quick like Bob Willis, on his better days. As a result his bowling suffered badly and he went from an under 25 a wicket averaging bowler to one averaging nearer 30 (28.40)) as he tried to buy wickets. It’s sad that no one had the guts to talk to him and ask him to rethink his strategy.
And as a result of what I just wrote, Hadlee, Kapil, Imran and Wasim stole a march on him as other countries developed all rounders of a similar stature.
Jairaj:
Thanks a billion for digging this video out - I was in 10th Standard (SSLC) and was following this match minute by minute on my transistor radio! This is a match that every Indian Cricket Fan should feel very proud about, although we lost it - that too in spite if it being our Golden Jubilee Match. GRV, not only displayed & educated what sportsmanship was to Indians, he also taught what sportsman spirit is to the entire cricket world. Winning a match is not what makes us the greatest cricketers in the world today - but, playing the game in the right spirit. This has made us the best team today in cricket. I am sure that the current generation too agrees with this fact. I am prouder to call myself a Bangalorean because three other Bangaloreans (Hanumantha Rao, Syed Kirmani & G. R. Vishwanath) were also involved in calling out, what was right, although that action made us loose the match. I am (& will be) very proud of this match although we lost it - even in my deathbed! Thanks again!
Thanks for this. Bob Taylor was possibly the greatest keeper of all time.
Mr. Galagali, you are amazing, another great test and any visuals you provide are priceless!! My memories: Sportstar covered this match with the title "Bombed out by Botham". He made 114 in a test where no other batsman crossed 50 (next highest score was Gavaskar's 49) and took 13 wickets. He was the first ever cricketer to take 10 wickets and a hundred in the same test (only achieved by Imran Khan and Shakib Al Hasan since then) But the match is equally remembered for Vishy's display of true sportsmanship, a rarity in modern cricket - the only other parallel I could find was Walsh's refusal to run out Qadir from non striker's end in World Cup 1987. India might have won the test had he not called back Taylor but Vishy won many hearts with his gentlemanly cricket.
We may see or hear millions of cricketers or sportsman from various sports but Vishy will always standout for his sportsmanship, his gentleman behaviour, attitude and lastly but not the least his superb square cuts, delicate nudges in slips, wristy leg glance, overall a touch artist! Thanks from my heart that I am able to recollect n relieve those glorious moments.
It also said Kapil Dev the bowler was so upset on that recall that he stopped calling Vishy as his favourite player for a very long time. But for millions of us he is and will be our all time favourite player!
Thanks sir for your kind information,I was 8th class then.Even India lost the test, vishy won the hearts of millions.
Vishy was a gentleman crickter and highly underrated also. He stood up when odds were against the team. Truly a great player.
Mohammed Rafeeque ! Ditto. Vishy was the greatest cricketer on planet earth! Period!
Vishwinath was a brilliant batsman loved watching that little guy play
Who said he was underrated player?
Prasad i. Mean he did not get deserved recognition.
Mohammed Rafeeque point noted tks!
What a great gesture by the diamond GRV on Golden jubilee test match! Thanks for posting sir
Thank you very much Mr.Jai Galagali. These videos are priceless treasures for the diehard fans like me. I am 61 now and I never missed any of the test matches played in Bangalore and Chennai during 1973-1994.
Brilliant narration and awesome conclusion for a match that is etched in memory forever due to GVR! Thank you!
Thank you so much for uploading video. its amazing !!!
Really worthy video Mr.Jai Sir,Yesss satyameva jayate hats off Vishy,no other cricketer would call back BOB,Taylor and Botham will remember this forever
Thanks Jay for posting this video. One saw a great display of sportsmanship by GRV.His statement in the interview to repeat the same shows the sportsman in him.
Oh ! Wow ! I just came across your channel by chance.. this was a treasure indeed. I was in junior school and remember this match pretty well. And Viswanath ! What a brilliant sportsman and a gentleman he was ! That gesture ! Unparallel.. thanks a lot for sharing this. Its brilliant!
It wasn't an ordinary test match, why?
Because it was the Golden Jubilee test match of B. C. c. I. No.
Because of extraordinary performance of great Sir Botham....No.
Because, the Great Vishi Sir shown an splendid sports man spirit and secure his name in the history of world cricket and sports history.
No one could forget his decision, due to which, the match has turned up towards England and India had lost it. But people just remember just because of Vishi Sir"s decision, that could taken by only by an extraordinary sportsman.
Among the vultures of cricketers, VIshwanath was and has been a true professional by his skills and sportsmanship. He stood really very tall and handsome in his gesture in this test match and made every sports loving soul happy and proud. Saluting the gentleman cricketer!
Thanks for this gem!
Thank you so much for uploading such old videos. I remember my childhood days. I will be delighted if you upload the video of the Kolkata test match between India and West Indies in 1978-1979.
Brilliant!! Excellent quality of video
All your uploads are treasure
Please upload 1st test and Calcutta Test of 1981 England tour....
India West indies `1983 Test and ODIs
This test will always be remembered in Cricket Test history for Bothams all-round performance & Vishwanaths SPORTSMANSHIP.
He is great ambassador of Cricket which cannot be matched.
Best wishes Vishy.
Superb is such a poor adjective to describe what you have done here. Your voice is as vintage as what you are describing. I only wish I had found this channel sooner. Just love it. The music, ambience and the feel.
Thanks Earnest! Much appreciated.
Jai Galagali Sir, would I be amiss in saying quality of the game has deteriorated with progress, which is such a sad assessment of the state of affairs. Would be delighted if you were to tell stories of great matches you saw or heard of in that voice of yours. Say, perhaps, a story of Md Azharuddin, the wizard with a bat? I once saw him flick an off drive. Seriously, he flicked an off drive.
Well done again Jai, this is a gem - you are fast becoming a prime source of videos for years to come not least because it's so rare yet so good to watch. One sideline of this - do I recall that Dennis Lillee was sitting with the England team at some point in this match? (En route to Pakistan)
Yes, I remember seeing a photo of Lillee & Greg Chappell watching the game. The Aussies were on their way to Pakistan as you rightly mentioned.
Btw, I loved the background song - Zindagi kabhi to rulaye! That’s one of my favorite songs from Anand. This movie was released in 1970 or 71 if my memory serves me right. The Golden Jubilee match was played in 1980 when, Shaan & Ram Balram were released. ;)
Shan was released in Nov. Dec.1980.
Vishnu Pundle yes! You are correct. Shan was released after this Test match.
Kennedy, although not from the same era, I still selected the song because of the baloon scene! Look at the Anand scene wher Rajesh Khanna lets go a bunch of balloons, just like in this one 😊.
Jai Galagali - nice explanation! :) I love that song.
Great to hear Vishy voice 🔥
Vishy had taught us the sportsmanship. Inspite of losing the match he had shown the world famous gesture which nobody can dare to do.
What a gentleman GRV . Highly true sportsman.
GRV was the greatest Indian batsman. The stylish way he bats was a treat to watch. The brilliant innings against Andy Roberts in Madras is still the best knock ever by an Indian batsman in Madras. This incident at the Golden Jubilee test is the real Spirit of the Game and not the one that the British people and players are bragging about now regarding the runout incident even though the run out is a genuine one.
Even though we lost the game but sport won.As long as cricket lives, Vishwanath will be remembered. He is my favourite batsman for ever even after seeing batting of Sobers,Viv Richards, Gavaskar, Tendulkar and Virat Kohli
I'm so impressed by this footage, been trying to see video of this famous match for so long! But surely the BCCI would have the whole match footage available in their archives somewhere? The Vishwanath incident is worth seeing on full, but this match contains the single greatest all round Test performance in cricket history. I'd love to watch the whole of Bothams bowling and batting if possible
It wasnt broadcasted
I remember that match.. I always fan of G R Vishvnath. Very law profile cricketer but true gentleman and good batsman
Yes , I had seen the match and I was just 13 years old . I became fan of Botham till today.
I was 11 years old studying in 6th standard. I listened the match on radio & still remember the incident of Vishwanath calling back Bob Tailor. Apart from this it was all Ian Botham show which won the match for England.
Sir please upload ind vs eng 1976-77 series. If you had.
Can u describe the PITCH that was used in this TEST!!
Gavaskar wrote in SPORTSTAR that it was prepared by Sadistic Ex India player !!
Who was the groundsman for this pitch??
Vishwanath did a stupid act by calling back Taylor after he was given out caught behind and that cost the India the match. Means, he insulted the umpire's verdict and undermined the umpiring. He went down to please the white folks. Indian cricket fans were very upset by this act.
Botham special ,thank you ...
English team was thrashed by Aussies 3-0 in the series in Austrialia. On the way home, they played India as a part of golden jubilee celebration of Indian Cricket. Kapil was priming to be one of the greatest all rounders. Sunil Gavaskar played carefree (and careless) knocks. It was Kapil who did wonderfully well in this match only to be let down by his "gentleman (to Englishmen only)" Skipper. He took the word of Taylor and withdrew the appeal. What a pity. During those days, Gavaskar did whatever he wanted. For no reason, he relinquished the captaincy so that his brother-in-law could be become the captain. Vishwanath almost lost his first match as captain against Pakistan. Vishy himself was out for low scores in these match and in addition Gavaskar batted recklessly. In those days, Gavaskar was a demi-god and fans literally worshipped. But, he is an extremely smart guy unlike Kapil Dev. The real match winner was Kapil Dev. A natural athlete won many matches for India. During those days, Gavaskar always tried to pull him down. It's only after the retirements, Gavakar started praising Kapil.
Gavaskar was an extremely selfish player during his days ; played for his own records.
The Gentleman man cricketer in Vishy & truly a brilliant Batsman
Thank you Galagali Sir,
Becoz of gentlemen like the little Master Vishy, cricket is called the gentleman's game.
Incredible stuff🤗🤗🤗
Vishwanath was a great batsman... Whenever he scored a century (I think 14) India never lost the match....
i was student and studying ninth std and listned commentry in radio but at that time rummor i had that vishwanath asked his brother in law sunil gavasker and sunil told vishwanath not to recall taylor and vishwanath had very confused and afer that gavasker told vishy
that you are captain now and it is
your decision to recall taylor or not to recall but at last vishwanath recalled taylor and another important news that after this mtch vishy did not accept captaincy for india though bcci offered him to lead the team
Fishy was a great BATSMAN but he was highly under rated gentleman Cricketer.
hey mate, any chance of India West Indies 1983?
The 2nd day of this test match(16th February 1980) was a rest day. Reason, Total Solar eclipse. Rumors created a mass hysteria ...
Papers screamed eclipses vishwanath
Which match is the picture from 9:20 from?
It seems to be from the same Jubilee test. Please compare it with the first few seconds of match visuals and you will see that they seem same.
Right, thanks!
It is the same match where all past captain's were also honoured
Special thanks
Love the PG Wodehouse and Conan Doyle
ಧನ್ಯವಾದಗಳು ಸರ್
Botham beat Gavaskar on all 6 balls in an over
Very unique record which belongs to the same match
Vishy captioned this lone test
Excellent 💝
VISHY is great
Sportsmen spirit from vishwanath..
India lost that test. Our players were poor in playing swing bowling then. Botham bowled out swingers, we just lost. This match was telecast live. We were badly beaten.
sudha anandan we are what we are in cricket ( the best) because we have been doing things the right way! We should feel proud about that. People like GRV taught us guided us in the right direction... this is a match that we need to look up with pride ....
Kapil put up a fight, taking 3 wickets and scoring 45. But Botham was at his peak, so we weren't gonna stand anyway.
Can u describe the PITCH that was used in this TEST!!
Gavaskar wrote in SPORTSTAR that it was prepared by Sadistic Ex India player !!
@@edwinkimberly It has nothing to do with the pitch. Both stadiums in Mumbai I.e. Brabourne and Wankhede have been traditionally helpful for spinners. But Botham (even if medium paced) captured 13 wickets. So who's to blame !!!!
@@AnkitSingh-pz2ju it was so heavily grassed , that sunny said eng players had said to him that , these amount of grass is not even seen in England pitches
I watch this match on TV . Due to Vishwanath sportmenship we loose this match
Asking a question just to bring out emotions of the viewers… we all know how the English team used to “steal” the wickets and win the test matches. Was it right for our captain Vishwanath to call back Taylor? After all that decision probably turned the match…
ಜೈ ರಾಜಣ್ಣ ಮತ್ತು ವಿಶ್ವ
More power to you, sir👍👍
Sir please improve mic 🎤 quality. It’s rough and destructive to ears 👂
veg Net - I have been watching this clip again & again as this was one of my favorite matches. I didn’t find any thing that sounded destructive to my ears. At which part of the video did you notice it?
NYC memories 💜🇵🇰🇵🇰
So what the test get failed usless
India lost this Test Match due to an absolutely stupid and foolish decision by Viswanath. People praise his sportsmanship but I feel he was extremely selfish. He simply wanted to project his greatness at the expense of the nation's respect. Horrible.
Yes I agree. I wonder if England were 485-5 instead of 85-5 whether Vishy would then call back Taylor.
Amit Bhattacharya : You're absolutely right. There was no need to display sportsmanship at such a crucial juncture.
Vishwanath used to walk without waiting for the umpire decision whatever b the situation! That answers the question
@@Madgoorlore That is again very selfish. Just to highlight your own image you are jeopardising the image of your country and destroying the prospects of your team. That shows that Vishwanath was one of the selfish players of the country.
I do agree that to pocess sportsmanship is very tough as winning by deceit n treachery is important. In that case one should appreciate Kauravas who won the game as that's the fundamentally important. cricket was once known as a gentleman's game, because of Vishy type players, current generation will never understand. Cricket or a sport is never a war to say one has to win at all costs!
