Something tells me that that awareness is widely distributed -- You are at one with millions -- And though we may have slipped into a bit of an evolutionary trough in the last couple of decades -- your particular forebears are a pointer to the future direction of evolution.

Viv Richards, what a player. Every shot in the book, including pull shots, played without a helmet. Master-class from the best batsman of the modern era. Dennis Lillee, never say die, picking up the important wickets of the champion West Indies batsmen. DK the greatest.

But those old school bowlers that Bradman faced on perfect batting wickets did bowl text book line and length and many were expert swing bowlers.
Not many good swing bowlers today, but when the ball does swing, today’s batsmen look like children.

Sure, Great people always make things look easy in all fields. Viv can hit a ball pitched outside off stump go in atleast 3 different directions. Mind you the bowler was Lillee, the engine that generates pace out of the pitch. It was stroke play. Tendulkar, Virat have the great comfort of playing half of their carreer in slow Indian pitches - no comparison. Atleast Tendulkar (played more for stat) was though better of the two offering great shots in the cover direction even in paced pitches.

One of the rare occasions where Viv was actually got out when in full swing, and only very special bowlers like Dennis Lillee were capable of doing that. I remember Colin Croft saying recently that the West Indies batsmen were never really under pressure in a test match because they knew they'd win because it was rare for an opposition to make over 200 against that bowling line up. Some may remember the first test in England in 1984 when Bob Willis declared and left them 343 to get on the last day. They only lost one wicket in the chase! Anyone watching them during this era would laugh at the current teams being ranked as the No 1 test side now. Wouldn't get near this mob! DK Lillee was the key factor in Australia not being humiliated every time they went out against them. His 4/10 in the last session against them on Boxing Day 1981 is one of the greatest cricketing performances I've ever seen. Viv Richards bowled middle stump for a duck on the last ball of the day. It was sensational!

That was until 95-96 and Sri-Lankans Jayusariya and Kaluwitharana revolutionised opening with the new restrictions in ODI. I remember when I saw them at the scg and they swashbuckled their way to 0/145 after just 15 overs. It changed the limited overs game forever. Well well. Where do I begin? Firstly a massive thank you to Cricket.Com.Au for posting the wonderful highlights as this was an era when cricket was great and most certainly competitive. Throughout that era, if the W.Indies could not rely on Greenidge and Haynes to deliver runs, it was always dependent upon Viv and Clive to steady the ship. Without Viv in particular, the W.Indies would have struggled as there was no other quite like him to dominate a bowling attack and to accelerate the run rate.
The Australian audiences were always treated to the W.Indies exhibition style of playing the game as any neutral would have certainly enjoyed watching them play. It was noticeable that all the W.Indies dismissals were down to a lack of footwork but I shall now tune into day 2 to see what happens.
