    About a year ago I had watched a five minute snippet of GB News that was available to watch in the US, and I think between the presenter and their guest about 60% of the dialogue was "umm", "uhh", and "err-ahh". I eventually gathered that the topic was how immigration was affecting private schooling, but it really seemed like neither of them had any kind of public speaking experience and it was borderline unwatchable. If that was supposed to be representative of their content standards, I can see why it's not been doing well.

    I'm a Yank, and it is sad to see this kind of crap happening in the UK, where media regulation has been more tight than back here. The FCC (Federal Communications Commission), our equivalent of Ofcom here in the USA is a much lighter touch regulator especially when it comes to cable/satellite TV which is generally out of their immediate jurisdiction. That's why extreme, one-sided right wing cancer like Fox News was allowed to form with the FCC pretty much powerless to do anything about it. The FCC mostly deals with over the air broadcasters and has little say on those distributed by cable and satellite. This was both a good and a bad thing. It allowed for freer expression on those new non-terrestrial channels, like say HBO could air George Carlin routines uncensored, but at the same time, it allows crap like Fox News to exist.

    • @barrieshepherd7694
      @barrieshepherd7694 4 месяца назад +5

      Worth remembering that GB News (and many other TV channels) are broadcast on Free To Air in the UK. The free to air system carries around 80 odd 'free' channels available to all without subscription. TBH Ofcom are pretty weak on most things but GB News seems to have set itself up to challenge Ofcom. Ofcom's main position is balance which GB News just don't recognise it seems.

If you look at the quality of the adverts on gb news at the moment they were very similar to talk tv and that’s interesting plus they are mostly z list adverts with a strange Welsh angle to them. Wonder do any of the Welsh advertisers bother with ITV Wales or S4C for adverts.

  • @tgheretford

    I would be shocked if GB News did not have its licence revoked. I would also not expect Talk (formerly Talk TV/Talk Radio) to last long either because it's in financial trouble and a key rationale for a loss of many personalities and a move to digital only. Only a matter of when, not if, News UK pulls the plug. I also expect Times Radio to close in the future too as they will likely focus on the newspaper. I suspect those on the right wing have moved to online personalities who can do commentary without Ofcom interference (for now - they haven't flexed their muscle with the Online Safety Act yet) or with the costs that the broadcasters have. This would also mean that LBC on radio would effectively become the only game in town for commercial news and political radio.

    For a show like this you would have to do a DVD style audio commentary of the whole entire programme after watching this in order to be far on this. This is alongside doing research of the Ofcom code and doing a lot of fact checking of the offending programme that was being shown. On a sitcom or drama you can show clips and get an idea of the quality of the program but for anything political you have to do a DVD style audio commentary with a large amount of research and fact checking in order for you not to be accused of cherry picking the facts.

      No, since GB News is a singular entity the singular "is" would be appropriate.

      More appropiate would be "Perceived right wing broadcasters are in trouble". Not just GB News, attention is also turning to Talk (formerly Talk TV/Talk Radio) and Times Radio for different reasons (although if GB News goes, those with a political agenda will turn to them for revocation of their licences, though it will be more likely they'll close voluntarily before that happens).

      @@Fredsterface fwiw in American English it would be correct to say “are”, because of the pluralisation of one of the words in its name; but in British English mass nouns (including names of singular entities with plurals) are still singular entities.
      This is also why AmEn says math whereas BrEn says maths yet still as a singular mass noun.

    If their license is revoked, that would be better than Christmas.

      And I bet the next push will be to get Talk's licence revoked. And then Times Radio. I'll put a wager on it.
