Hi Diane, apologies it's taken me so long to respond but I was totally star struck when I read your comment😚 I wouldn't be able to explain just how much you and your fabulous tutorials packed full of invaluable information and tips have helped my Sewing over this past couple of years. I absolutely love, love, love creating my own clothes and I simply would not be able to do that without you. Thank you for being so generous with your knowledge and for creating such invaluable content for amateurs enthusiasts like me😘😘😘
I am so impressed with your tenacity and obvious design talent. Please show more of your patterning design techniques. I will now check out Diane Dalziel slopes. Thank you.
GREAT VIDEO! Seriously, I have made some pattern blocks and I have had no clue what to do with them. Not anymore! Thank you, thank you thank you. I will be referencing all the videos you've linked here, too. Also- I love your channel so much and even bought one of the books you suggested in another video. You're the best! I know this video is old, but I loved it so much I just had to comment! :)
I just found her channel 2 days ago and I am obsessed with watching all of her fabulous "make" videos! Beautiful clothes, perfect narration and camera work, great tips for all of us! 😍
I have always thought that I was experienced and capable enough to make my own blocks but this video has now given me confidence to go ahead and do it. Thank you for doing these videos.
Its definitely the best sewing related decision I've made Christine , to make my own blocks 👍👌👍 working from the block has been a complete revelation to me 💕💕💕 good luck with it 🍀🍀🍀, and have a fab weekend💕💕💕
I love that you are so unique from other sewing bloggers Suzanne, really inspiring, and making the thought of attempting to create a block a little less scary. 🤗🤗🤗
I too, use blocks, but I haven’t for awhile due to weight fluctuations, but you have inspired me to build new blocks. Thank you and I can’t tell you how much I’ve missed you, so glad you are back.
Thanks a lot for Diane Deziel. I'm admiring you for months. Dianes war of explaining is awsome and now I dare starting tracing my blocks. I am so fed up with changing patterns and searching for the right pattern. And I do love your shoes.
What a wonderful and useful video! It’s people like you who encourage and inspire others to step out and try new methods and techniques to better our skills. Thank you sew much!!
Thank you for summarizing your block work and all those gorgeous garments you created with them. I've seen them one by one as you've completed them but seeing them altogether was breathtaking :)
Thank you for sharing. I am learning how to use my basic blocks and find your information very useful. Your sewing techniques as well are helping me improve.
Thank you so much for this overview on how you use the blocks. Just finished drafting the darted bodice blocks following Diane’s video. Like you, did not completely understand it ar the start. Just do exactly what she tells you to do and than you get there. Be aware that most of the measurements are based on what she calls the bust arc, which is half of the bust circumference. It really helps to download and fill in the PDF she provides. I still have to sew up a toille to check the fit. Based on my experiences with the skirt (started there as it is much easier), I expect I will have some tweaks to get it right. Looking forward to start my self-drafting journey. So inspiring to see all your makes!
I just love that Dianes channel has helped us to draft our blocks👌👌👌I totally agree with you about the tweaks, I have tweaked practically every block I have made 😍 and the PDF she provides is certainly a great help (I didn't download it myself, I just wrote down all the measurements and made the calculations as I was following the tutorial😍) Good luck with starting the self drafting journey, the learning curve for me has been huge but I'm loving it 💕💕💕 thanks so much and have a fab weekend Lily💕💕💕💕💕
I believe since so many were confused by the bust arc she redid those videos without those terms. I drafted a while back but I had some trouble tweaking her knit pattern to my swayback and slight tummy protrusion causing hip drag lines. But I figured out how to account for that width differential and underbelly sink when measuring the widest part of my hips a few days ago. So I’m going to try from scratch again and remeasure myself and do over my blocks.
Hello! Thanks for sharing your blocks. I'm in the same situation that you ones were. I would like to learn how to sew my own pieces/cloths, but I don't want to buy already made patterns. They are expensive. You are very talented. I wish I could sew a few pieces too. I'm going to visit Diane's channel to try to create the blocks that you are using, so maybe, in the future I can create beautiful pieces, just like you do. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much... I'm just starting out..... Been trying to just start out for a few years now. I think this overview is great. Its helping me understand clearly. I just need to be confident
Hi Darshna, I was exactly the same as you, I was starting out for a good long while before taking the plunge😫😉 I'm glad the video was helpful, good luck with your sewing journey🍀🍀🍀 #taketheplunge 👍😍
Love your block method, and thank you again for videotaping your amazing work Susanne, my daughter and son in law have visited Ireland 4 years ago, but I am definitely going with them the next time in a couple of years or so
I have tried so hard to make my own block but with little success, I’m so envious that you have made such amazing garments I tried to watch craftsy but couldn’t get it right 😢
I feel your pain Carol, I was just saying that I think we all find resources that suit us as individuals and something seams to click, I so hope that happens for you💕🍀💕🤞💕
Nice to see you back. Thanks for your lovely ideas. I made a few of my blocks months back but is yet to actually use them to create garments. It just seems daunting to me, but you're so talented. You're pieces are so beautiful.
Susanne how do you know what fabric the bodice is for and how do you even start to modify it. I finally made one with from Another tutorial but have no idea how to use it . I tried sewing a draft pattern from it on muslin and it was tight as heck now so it’s just sitting there😩 can you do a basic tutorial on how we would modify them to our body shape like you do pleaseeeeee🙏🏽💕
I am very new to sewing, 65, live in sultry Cairns (Australia) and have, at last, decided on the style of clothes I now want to wear - hence the decision to take up sewing. Because of our climate, I no longer want to wear synthetics, structured or fitted clothing, zips, buttons, etc. I am finding you videos so inspiring and easy to follow - you are a fantastic teacher. Like you (and many new to sewing), I need to stop wasting time and money and start making a few slippers or blocks. Do I detect a Northern Ireland accent? I originally come from Lisburn ☺
Thanks so much Sandra💕👍💕 I definitely recommend giving the blocks a go, it has opened up a whole new world of Sewing to me👌👌👌 it is a NI accent and I know Lisburn well👍 I bet you don't miss the climate🍀😍
I always admire whatever you make Susanne! They always look like they are from high end boutique shops! Stunning attention to detail and so inspirational! I would love to be able to draft my own blocks, but I am not that bright (it seems), as I have watched Diane Deziel's tutorials (among many others) and still can't get my head around them. I am now watching a Dutch lady here on YT. I only found her here yesterday, and she has a series that she calls 'Make What You See In The Shops' and she does something similar to you, where she takes pictures from the internet of items of clothing and then shows you how to draft your own patterns to make a similar item. Her channel is called 'Creative Cheers of Fashion Laura Flohr' (I think you might find her interesting too). I am hoping that by watching you, Diane and Laura, that something might 'click' with me someday, and I can do these things too! It's great to have you back! As always, TFS 👍❤
Thanks so much Hazel💕💕💕 I must take a look, Laura's channel sounds fab👍 It took me quite the while for something to "click" hopefully it will happen for you too, I think finding the right channel for us is the key, Diane was that for me👌👌👌 Have a fab weekend Hazel💕💕💕
So happy to have your video with my Friday morning coffee. Such an impressive and creative block collection. To be honest, I have difficulty with traditional patterns as my body type is not conducive to their sizing. That's why I end up "altering" more than constructing. Making my own blocks could be the answer? With so many projects in the fire though, that may have to wait. LOL Still love love love watching your videos each week and look forward to them. Big Hugs
Thanks so much Eva 💕💕💕 I know what you mean about sizing and altering, I've had that experience too with some traditional patterns😩 the block is definitely good for eliminating a lot of that👍👍👍 I hope you get through all your projects 🍀🤞🍀 have a fabulous week and as always thanks so much for all your lovely comments 💕💕💕💕💕
Hi T Bores, I'm just learning this patterning business and don't have enough experience to film the process of drafting the block but I can 100% recommend the channel I used, Diane Deziel, here on RUclips. She's a fabulous teacher👌
Everything looks so great and your editing and explanations are super clear! I have also been watching a ton of videos in the pursuit of learning how to draft my own patterns. It's overwhelming sometimes but you've inspired me greatly! I will definitely check out your links. Many thanks!
Hello mam, When I drafted Diane Deziel basic bodice I get .5mm ease at shoulder how is it balanced and skirt back waist darts don't match with the bodice darts how to deal with it?
Thanks so much Katherine💕👍💕 definitely, can't wait to draft that one and play around with some patterns 👌👌👌 however, I'm not looking forward to fitting issues you mention😧🙁😧
Susanne, for the first block did you just use one tutorial of Diane Denzel because she is confusing to me too and I have been trying to make these for months now and like you said everyone does it differently so I get confused even more. I spend a whole day drafting a basic body with one tutorial when I tried it out on a Muslim it was absolutely way too small :(
Hi Susanne- I have a quick question for you. I am curious about how you did the back measurement for your bodice sloper. Diane Deziel seems to measure from upper arm to arm where others measure at the armpits. If you could clear this up for me, I would appreciate it! Thank you so much.
Hi Diane, its been so long since I drafted the block I cant quite remember, all I can be 100% sure of is that I would have followed Dianes instructions to the letter 👍
I know you have your own sewing blocks with Diane Deziels you tube help, but would it be possible for you to do a tutorial, I have to say your style of tutorial is brilliant, I have been sewing for years, but not many items for myself, I would like to start doing more and feel the blocks would help, please consider making this type of tutorials. Thank you🤓
Great video. Thank you I really appreciate your videos, especially how you explain how to construct the garments you make. I have a question though. When I did my bodice block, it's quite fitted to my body. When did you put any ease in?
Thanks so much leann💕💕💕, the process I followed gets you to pop your measurements into equations, within which and once calculated the ease is added👍 someone mentioned in a previous video that the process they followed didn't have any ease😩 😞😲
Hi Suzanne, have been sewing for many years, but never fully satisfied with the items I make because of the fitting. I am a petite (4ft11) with small shoulders, but larger top half. I am confused about the blocks, do you not use ordinary patterns ie new look etc? or do you depend entirely on your blocks to make ALL your garments. If I were to use the sizing on a traditional pattern, I would have to cut out a size 16-18, I weigh just 8 stone, how can this be? Any suggestions ?
Hi Carole, I know what you mean about fitting issues with commercial patterns. I started sewing with commercial patterns but haven't sewn one in about a year or so, since I started compiling my blocks. I now use the blocks as a base to draft my own patterns. Maybe you will have the same experience making your own block 🤔
Not that long Donna, I generally have a play around with a pattern made from the block and by the end of that process I'm usually happy with the block. I've found the process takes less time with each block as I've learned more about my own body shape and measurements 👍For example after making one toile of my latest block I was happy with the fit👍

So very helpful. Thanks!
Wow thank you for sharing- take the plunge.
💕👍💕 that has to be a motto for sure😉
Do you do a mock up first before the final garment?
Love this idea I’m new to dressmaking I’ve made a skirt and two tops but the patterns are expensive so I’d like to try this
Its fab working from the block Carol👍👌👍 and one of the benefits is definitely cost, as you say patterns can be pricey😲
Hi Suzanne, do you have videos teaching us how to draft the blocks?
Hi T Bores, I'm just learning this patterning business and don't have enough experience to film the process of drafting the block but I can 100% recommend the channel I used, Diane Deziel, here on RUclips. She's a fabulous teacher👌
I want to learn how to make blocks.....my goal for 2019. I want to make some simple tops that fit me out of woven and knit fabric.
👍👍👍good luck with it, I've loved working from the block💕💕💕
Everything looks so great and your editing and explanations are super clear! I have also been watching a ton of videos in the pursuit of learning how to draft my own patterns. It's overwhelming sometimes but you've inspired me greatly! I will definitely check out your links. Many thanks!
Your tutorial are amazing. Thank you 😍
Thank you💕, thats very kind of you to say Alshaimaa 💕
Hello mam, When I drafted Diane Deziel basic bodice I get .5mm ease at shoulder how is it balanced and skirt back waist darts don't match with the bodice darts how to deal with it?
Great to see you back. Love your designs. Will you be attempting a trouser block this year? I’ve found fitting trousers a nightmare!
Thanks so much Katherine💕👍💕 definitely, can't wait to draft that one and play around with some patterns 👌👌👌 however, I'm not looking forward to fitting issues you mention😧🙁😧

Sew Custom Thanks. I've looked at Diane's and I'll check it out again. 👏 😃
💕👍🍀
I think (I'm definitely not an expert) pattern companies use "standards" in a similar way to fashion shops which are based on averages This great for those that are average in height, weight, length of torso, arm, leg etc but unfortunately if we fall outside those averages we need to make alterations😩 For me the block has, in the main, cut out all the fitting issues. Maybe you will have the same experience making your own block 🤔
what about a pants block? Do you make your own pants?
Hi Suzanne, how long did it take you to fit and tweak the Diane Deziel blocks and get the perfect fit?
Not that long Donna, I generally have a play around with a pattern made from the block and by the end of that process I'm usually happy with the block. I've found the process takes less time with each block as I've learned more about my own body shape and measurements 👍For example after making one toile of my latest block I was happy with the fit👍
Thank you Suzanne.😀
Have you done a pants block yet? If not, any plans to do one?
Sorry, to interfere, but I saw your question, and was watching a lady on here yesterday who was making a trouser block, here, tinyurl.com/y6k4dhy4 I found her almost as fascinating as Susanne (I hope you don't mind me jumping in here Susanne) 😘
I don't mind at all Hazel 👍 its always great to here new sources of inspiration👍👍👍
Not yet and yes👍
How did you know how much ease to incorporate?
The ease is included in the calculations that Diane supplies in her tutorials👍
How do I make blocks?
How do you store all your blocks?
I hang all my blocks👍👍👍
👌👌👌💝😘
💕😍👍
Agree re the value of Diane D.
absolutely fabulous and generous teacher💕💕💕
Wait, I thought a block/sloper was made with your exact measurements and you have to add ease when you make a wearable pattern. Is this not true? You didn't mention anything about ease, that part always stumps me.
Hello love your videos Diane tutorials do you have to subscribe to them?
Thanks Silvia💕👍💕 you don't, the videos are available whether you've subscribed or not, however it's well worth pressing the subscribe button on Diane's channel, she uploads quite regularly and it's all good stuff👌👌👌
