first i thought i will save money for fantom x6 because i like old school sounds.. but now when i see this i will probably save money for this one because i think this workstation is as good as yamaha motif series synth which i have already.. the only thing i dislike is more keys.. i think 61 is enough!
I have a Fantom 8. This thing is way over my head. I am self taught player so I am limited. My main instrument is drums. I have had Rolands from the past and I still have my XP 80 but it needs to be repaired. I have also had a couple of Yamahas from the 80s. I don't understand why Roland changed the sequencer and intermediates like myself can't play things in real time from beginning to end of a song on each individual tracks, like the older sequencers used to be. Or am I missing something that I haven't understood yet? None of my songs that I have written has that looping stuff in them, where I would play a portion and loop it for the entire song. I am old school and my songs are written in styles from the 70s and 80s. I really don't understand this keyboard at all. Not to mention there are so many sounds in this thing that it is very overwhelming and so many of the sounds have been tweaked just a little and the programmers barely tweak a sound and call it an entirely new sound. I have watched many of the video tutorials with Ed Diaz, ( great instructor), but unfortunately for people at my level of an intermediate level, or maybe a little above that but certainly not on the pro level, I still don't grasp everything on the videos. My biggest disappointment with this Fantom is the sequencer. I need to be able to record each instrument on a separate track as in the older keyboards and if this will do that, I just can't understand how to do it. I am contemplating on purchasing a multi track recorder like a Tascam. I also just don't fully grasp this scene thing. I'm just not comprehending all of this difference that this keyboard does in comparison to older keyboards. I need help. I need someone that fully understands this entire keyboard and how to operate it and take some instructive lessons from them. I had a Korg Nautilus before I bought this Fantom and I gave that one to my daughter. Even after doing my research and watching as many videos on the Fantom as I could, I am still not as happy with it as I should be. I did consider the new Kurzweil K2700 before I got the Korg Nautilus, but I sorta allowed an older man that plays piano influence me into not considering the Kurzweil K2700. I personally think he was not up on Kurzweil's products of today and maybe he had a bad experience with a Kurzweil in the past. I don't know. I would very much consider selling my Fantom 8 for around $3700. Bottom line: I need someone to help me understand this keyboard better and teach me how to operate it. I can do hit and miss all day and never achieve anything. I know this is long but if anyone out there that knows much more about this keyboard please share some info with me and possibly some sources of how to learn this thing better. Because I am at the point that I want to sell it and start over and do more in depth research about other keyboards that will do what I need a keyboard to do. Thanks for any help and advice. Also if this keyboard is worth keeping and learning and not selling it and getting something else, then please let me know what I can do with it especially the sequencer. I have too many songs waiting to be recorded and I can't afford to go to a studio.
@@sulgypolo I'll try. Basically I don't understand the sequencer. I don't know if I can play each instrument in real time for the entirety of my songs and then go to another track and record another instrument. Older keyboards had the type of sequencers that allowed you to record each instrument on a track, for instance, the piano on one track for the entire song and then the bass on a separate track and so on. I also don't fully understand the scenes and how to utilize them. That's as best as I can rephrase it.
In these looping sequencers, you are meant to make separate loops for each the intro, verse, bridge, chorus, etc. When you want to que up the next section of the song, you select it while you are nearing the end of the current part (intro, chorus, whatever), and you will see the name of the performance blinking to indicate that it is coming up next. If the sequencer is not playing, the change is instant instead and no blinking title. My Juno-DS and JD-Xi are like this, too. Loads of people are bad with technology and get confused with more feature-packed keyboards, that is real normal. From beginners to pros, it happens to folks of all walks of life. No more linear sequencer, which you are used to. Korg still does those, but linear sequencers have fallen out of style. If you want something modern with a linear sequencer, grab a used Roland FA-08 or Fantom-G or Yamaha MOXF8, or any of the following from Korg: M50, M3, Kronos, Kross2, Krome EX, Nautilus, TR-88.
Reminds me of mij ex brother in law back in ‘86. He had a c-64, a Steinberg Pro-16 and a Midi-keyboard. In ‘87 switcht to Atari, Qbase and Roland midi soundbanks mounted in a 19” rack. He also got a Dr Rithm and a Roland drum pad. And his mum and dad and litle sister and brother to do the background choir singing in his songs. It really was a funny happy family. Professionally dad was the chairman of the board of directors of the biggest Dutch insurance multinational. In his 20’s he was a sailor at the Royal Dutch Navy Aircraft carrier Karel Doorman. He played the Clarinet too. Any instrument needs a human touch to come alive. If all is in the right constellation, you can make the heavens sing with these Roland keyboard stuff.
Hello friends from Roland! Hello engineers Roland! What's really missing when saving a scene is saving the tone settings (Cutoff, Resonance, ADSR and all the rest) and effect settings for the tones. Also missing: routing of microphone inputs with audio output and configuration to separate tracks. If you do this, you will become the "King of Synthesizers"! And if there is routing to a separate track of the “SAMPLE section” and conversion of samples, then it will be: “King of Kings”. Thank you.
Those tone settings can be changed in two places. There are the Scene settings and individual Tone settings. Saving a Scene doesn't save Tone settings, but if those changes you list are adjusted in Scene settings instead, they should get saved, unless something is wrong with your keyboard.
@@Jason75913 Yes, unfortunately, the scene settings do not save the Tone settings. Because of this, you have to create many similar tone presets. For example, Elektron devices do not have this problem.
@@IvanBrain JD-Xi also does save full Tone settings per "Scene". If Tone settings cannot be saved apart, lots of people whine, buddy. Cutoff/Atk/Dec/Sus/Rel/Vibrato and other "Offsets" exist per Scene ("Performance" in non-Zen-Core products). So, yes, you can save them. Mod matrix and a small handful of extra parameters like oscillator drift cannot be saved with each Scene (or "Performance" in older gear). Roland has been doing it that way since JV1080 or so. Vibrato tends to be tied to LFO1 in factory patches, so Vibrato Rate in Scene settings tends to mess with LFO1, just so you know. The manuals tend to not explain that, for whatever reason, even though it is useful to know.

THIS is the technology that is responsible for an entire era of boring and uninspiring middle of the road music and why the 80s sounded so good. Bring back the JP8 and let a new generation of musicians hear the difference true analogue can make.
The masses have never cared whether you use analogue or digital synths. And they will never ever. Got a Fantom for three years and happily sold it. This demo is exactly what the Fantom is about, old and kitsch sounds. Furthermore, the seamless 'demo' of this video is, to my knowledge, really far from reality. The TR on the Fantom is absolutely not flexible and playing with it/doing some real and evolving drums on the flight is everything but possible. Also, the Roland "scenes" model is extremely limited. You can't go from one scene to another without cutting the sound. So it means that If you have several scenes/songs, you can't go from on to the another without a silence. the "song mode" is very basic too.
