I have both: a Fantom 6 EX and a Montage M7 in my studio. For classic pianos - it's the Montage. For pop-cut-through-the-mix pianos, Fantom. Classic 80's synth sounds, Fantom all day long. For sound design, Montage - the Fantom is pretty unfriendly for sound design. For soundtrack/realistic sounds (guitar, strings, horns, etc) it's Montage. I love both (synth action) keybeds, but I like the Fantom keybed just a bit more. Vocoder - Fantom for sure. Samples - Fantom (no pads on the Montage). Sequencer, the TR-Rec sequencer on the Fantom blows away the sequencer in the Montage. User interface - the Montage wins over the confusing, convoluted mess that the Fantom UI has become. So it's tough to pick between the two. Which is why I kept both.
Love your channel, Scott. I really tried hard to get used to the Fantom's UI, but in the end, I just gave up. The keybed is loud, mainly because it feels a bit shallow and reverberates off the metal body. And of course, there’s the polyphony issue. But as you mentioned, for classic '80s synth sounds, the Fantom is unbeatable!
@Echochamber79 coming from a Kurzweil UI I found the Fantom very easy to navigate and well organized 😂. I learned very fast how to get around and build my tones and scenes. Not familiar with the Montage. Kurzweil builds great keyboards but their UI is still stuck in the 90's
I feel that Yamaha and Roland should merge and give us the best of both worlds at half the price. Hahaha...and don't anybody dare complain after that cos then you'll be utter utter... (anybody remember Cliff Richard and the Young Ones here?) 😂
The Montage on the first piano played is the clear winner to my ears. Full body well balanced sound. As for many to me the piano voice is most important everything else is secondary.
I did an extensive comparison of them side-by-side, using the same set of high-quality headphones. To my ears, the Montage M8x was superior in every area: sound, sound design, keyboard feel,user interface, and it has polyphonic aftertouch. At the time, the montage was slightly more expensive, but well worth the difference in cost.
I recently sold my Fantom 7 because it just didn't do it for me after owning it for a few years. I've only played the Montage in a music shop but I know its far superior already 👌

Ive owned a Fantom-7 (now an Ex) for over 4 yrs and have used it extensively for a variety of different reasons. I have found the multiple engines to be pretty easy to navigate and merge. For classic Roland emulations, nothing beats it, especially with the recent addition of the JD-800 and ACB models. Also, having the choice of VPiano, Supernatural piano as well as straight sampled pianos gives a nice variety for different ears. The Supernatural strings, horns and electric piano... as well as the newer rotary organ models are superb. I have also owned a Jupiter-80 since 2011 and was very happy to see this supernatural inclusion. Once you understand and get used to how to manipulate the supernatural brass, woodwinds and strings, you may be surprised at how realistic and well they site in a mix as well as convince sonically solo. Ive also played the Montage and believe it is also an amazing instrument sonically. As I am not an owner, I cannot comment on its ease of use or functionality but others I know who do own them tell me they are very happy with their choice. I think the bottom line is, today we have a choice of several incredible instruments.... you really cannot go wrong with either.
Yamaha sounds more round and organic mirroring accoustic and the sounds immediately inspire and gives me ideas...the Roland does sound good but just a bit more synthetic/synthesiser
Nice video. I think it would be helpful to compare sound to sound, back to back as you go through examples. For example, compare an EP on Montage to EP on Fantom back to back. Also, play the same piece, chord progressions, etc, so that we can hear the Timbre, character, and dynamics of the same song being played on two different brands. Thanks again.

They clearly stated at the beginning, and in the description, what the exact purpose of THIS video was.
The Fantom 8 (updated to EX) ist the most amazing tool in the studio. It´s the brain of everything I do but I know that piano players will go for the montage. The action on the Fantom 8 is really heavy. When I play a grand piano it's worlds apart in my opinion. But still, the Fantom is AMAZINGGGGGG

I went with the Montage M8x. I had a Roland RD-2000 and Fantom 08. I prefer the Montage GEX keyboard with poly aftertouch to the PHA-50 on the Fantom. I get why Jack is initially enamored by the PHA -50 action, it didn’t last for me… While previous iterations of the Montage and Fantom have been around for several years, for the record the Montage M8x has been available in the U.S. since November 2023. The Fantom EX followed. And yes, forget patch 1. Play the CFX vs the Fantom Concert Grand without pad. We need Part 2… the 8 scenes on the Montage changes everything.
Fantom 8 with the EX upgrade here. I really love the keyboard touch, and after a pretty steep learning curve (coming from the Yamaha world) I've come to appreciate the different way of doing things. Great sound in my opinion. Very happy with it.
Check out Rick Beato's interview with Tori Amos...makes sense she would like the firm action of the Montage. We should go and buy more of her albums so she can afford to get that broken key replaced lol.
I have neither...I've only ever played them when I was I the US earlier this year... where I'm from in the Caribbean doesn't have stores that carry those beasts. Plus I can't afford them😂. If I had to pick, it would be the Montage M8x
I turned to a full VST setup to play live. I cannot play anymore without real hammond clones and serious rhodes simulations. Workstations must improve a lot to fight with software instruments (IMHO). So I would be extremely puzzled to buy one or another. The wonderful piano samples of Montage seem to match with my ears. Modelling piano a la Roland doesn't sounds good enough to me. Strange, I always use Pianoteq...
I went with the Fantom for the form factor of the mod wheels with the whammy bar along with the 9th fader doubling as the 1' organ stop... Montage seems like a great board but I'm happy with my decision
no it isnt its the simulation of power being turned off whilst holding down some keys on a hammond organ ah la jon lord… its the tone wheels slowing down

I haven't bought either yet but I have spent a bit of time on each. I LOVE the pianos & orchestral strings on the Montage but personally prefer the keybed on the Fantom. Hard to beat the Jupiter/Juno style synths, horns, and percussion of the Fantom. While I like the Roland Organs better, I like the wider sliders on the Montage M series. I'd probably get the Fantom 8 & the Montage M7. But, the M8 has the extra aftertouch and MIDI 2.0 features. Hard decision.
Great video as always. I have the fantom 8ex. Synth, sequencer are great, the pha50 action is solid / accurate (very cool with the german grand f ex) but I am not in love with it. A bit cold, no soul. I rather run Pianoteq or keyscape instead. I am really interested in the gex action of the Montage. I also have the Ns4, different purpose, dig it, but not the fatar action playing piano patches. Clinky a bit. Since years I am searching a board with fantastic keybed for piano patches but also ok with synths / organs. Maybe this montage? Cheers from Hungary.
I used to have issues with the Fantom 8 piano sounds and found out Roland is using the physical modeling sound method instead of the Sampling method used by Yamaha....I'm ok with Fantom now, I just need to learn how to model my own piano sound now...😊
I think one of the great assets to the Fantom is it contains V-Piano, Super Natural piano, as well as straight sampled piano patches. You can pick whichever you like. These RUclips demos are fun to watch but there is so much more to each instrument beyond the limited scope we can glean from these videos right?
@@stevengasiecki8826 .....that's right...I got that fantom 8 for different reason than just the piano patches...this instrument goes much deeper and am still learning it....youtube demos are just what they are, Demos.....if I get a montage, it would be for different reasons....no one keyboard has everything, on the other hand, I'm not a big fan of the Nord, other than the piano patches that everybody seems to like...Big Deal...🙂
I have the Montage M8X and previously owned the Roland Fantom 7. In my opinion, the pianos on the Montage are in a completely different league compared to the Roland, not to mention the polyphony issues I encountered with the Fantom.
In a new editon Fantom EX (RD-2000 EX) the one that in video the main feature is a new piano sound that supposed to be better than on a previous Fantom and RD series. Just an observation, not saying Fantom is better or anything. I actually like both.
I have a Fantom 08 (from Andertons), i really wanted the Full Fat Fantom but couldn't justify the extra money. Now i want both these keyboards SO badly! I do love the Fantom though, old skool synth sounds are awesome but i still use a lot of vst's as well - the Fantom makes a giod midi controller too, with a fair few mappable knobs. I've created a DAW control scene to help with that (stolen from another RUclips vid)
I have both a MODX8 & the M8. I'm actually using the M8 ESP VST thru my MODX in addition to my M8. It's fun to layer both simultaneously. The M8 action is the best I've felt on any 88 keybed. I am looking to add the Fantom 07, for the portability and superior organs. The analog sounds on the M8 are also great...and that's coming from a guy who also has a MemoryMoog+. If you're looking for "improved" organs compared to the MODX, the M8 will work. But if you're looking for "superior" organs, get the Roland.
@@JohnM1 Thanks mate. Whats your honest opinion. Asides from the inbuilt PAC on Montage, do you really feel any difference in sound quality on bread and butter sounds? Synth sounds can be recreated anyways with some sonic powers of other vsts.

That said, of what I see & hear on RUclips I think you'd be happy with the M8...as long as you're OK with the weight...It's like 63 lbs. As for M8's analog leads, no problem whatsoever on either the physical M8 or the software version (EST).
I can really hardly choose. Can’t afford to get both. Have the Jupiter XM already with all Roland sounds (not to compare of course) but I’m deceived by its ergonomy and complexity of programming. I also have lots of VSTs on my pc (home studio) Looking for a workstation to have a plug and play keyboard.

just listen to a montage preset called ‘pearly gates’. probably the most juicy preset i ever heard. really, really nice. i dont care about… let me vomit in my mouth for a second there… brass on a synth. they ALL sound rubbish.

Got the Modx6+ with a similar sound engine without the analog and i love it. Had a Fantom 06 and really didnt like it much.

Agreed I’ve owned the RD800 and the Montage 6 and the roland supernatural pianos are good but next to the Yamaha’s there is just no contest

just listen to a montage preset called ‘pearly gates’. probably the most juicy preset i ever heard. really, really nice. i dont care about… let me vomit in my mouth for a second there… brass on a synth. they ALL sound rubbish.
