I have one and I’m matched to the OB 8X and it’s better than the OBX. It’s better than many of the analog synthesizers for that price. I’m good with that.
I own also the JP-X and I totally agree with that what you have written. That you get a similar sound from analoge gear you need expensive machines and expensive effects. It is the same like guitar amps. Modern modelling amps are such as good that only real pros using classical amps and f/x. I think zen core has founded a new era for analoge modelling in synthesizer business.
Thanks for the demonstration. I'd hate to get rid of my JP-80. Considering the arpeggio functionality from the X, they might actually pair well together.
Awesome demonstration! Fantastic sounds! Just one thing a little annoying that has no relation to the sound - The preloaded models sticker is off a little. Numbers 1 to 6 do not match the synth model symmetrically. Look how off in the right the JX is in comparison to the 3 vertically.
Thanks! Yeah that little foil sticker was definitely an afterthought by Roland. There are some shortcomings with the original OS and control layout that become apparent once you play with the synth for a while.
@@blossbeats8035 you are really going to enjoy that instrument I promise you. The Jupiter X It’s better than a lot of instruments that have ever been made. Enjoy.

Is the jupiter X digital or analog? Which is closer to the old Jupiter 8, the jupiter 80 or the Jupiter x? I totally adore the old one. Jupiter X sounds amazing...
Jupiter-X is 100% digital but the analog modelling logic is a generation or two better/more sophisticated than the Jupiter-80 was. From all accounts the Jupiter-X analog modelling isn't *quite* as accurate as the ACB modelling of the System-8, but it's very close and can provide a lot more polyphony due to lower processing requirements. The fact the Jupiter-X has a ton more features and MUCH wider sonic palette compared to the System-8 means it's probably a better choice for most people. But when it comes to pure analog modelling I still think the System-8 is Roland's best.
@@adrianbroughton9752 I have owned both and currently keep and own the JUPITER-X which is actually a much more powerful modeling synthesizer due to the ZenCore so it sounds better than the Jupiter-80 if you are looking for models of the previous generation "Jupiter" series. All the drum sounds of the CR-78, and I sold both my CR-78 and CR-68 which were fully supplied with all the MIDI tools does not approach my satisfaction with the Jupiter-X libraries. Okay, update here. I have a Prophet 6 and have been pining after the 5 reissue, but listening to a comparison vid, the 6 sounds just as good as the 5 reissue to me: ruclips.net/video/lnWUHld91Ko/видео.html
Looks absolutely wonderful, sounds old fashioned. (Not that I know what new fashioned sounds like-Udosuper6/Hydrasynth maybe). But of course you were going Juipiter 8 so that's to be expected.
I would like someone to reproduce either The Cars, or the Jupiter-8 arpeggios from the Duran Duran "Rio" Album (Rio, Hungry Like The Wolf, Save a Prayer)
I would LOVE to replicate those sounds but unfortunately the audio identification algorithms RUclips is using now flags it all for copyright infringement. I'm not really sure how anyone is getting around that stuff now other than ignoring the emails sent to them and risking getting sued. RUclips really sucks right now in that respect. But believe you me, you can replicate them all!
It really would have been cool to have some actual analog osc's, but the way Roland coded their digital osc's makes more sense from a long-term point of view. You don't ever have to worry about solid state components wearing out with this synth. All of the component aging can be replicated digitally using the onboard synth "age" parameter.
Completely agree with you guys, you can definitely make "digital" sounds if you're in the mood for them that day, but the "analog" sounds that this beautiful monster creates are on another level! Even the key response feels direct and basically analog - no latency or processing delay to ruin the feel, at least to me.
i keep reading retail specs that say 1 LFO is that correct ? ? and do those 4 lights on the right have to flash like its trying to induce a seizure or night terrors ?
I should have spent more time trying to "spread" the voices out so you could hear them all stacked better. I honestly thought it would crackle out and not work, but all 4 engines fully run at once!
For the screen shots I used a Logitech webcam taped to a mic stand, directly overhead, zoomed in, with some video settings tweaked to get the colors to show better, and slightly out of camera view.
Sure can! The system settings allow you to modify the color and action of most front panel lights. You can even turn them all off if you would like. (The large, white, rectangular buttons.)
I'm on the fence about getting one of these. I think its a great piece of kit but i don't use my gear to its full potential due to so many hobbies and lack of time, also I have no space for it unless my JP6 sells. One thing i do find annoying about it are those pulsating lights on the top. That would drive me batty. I have a JP8 and a 106. Both work 100%
I totally agree about the lights being kind of annoying. Really though they're not quite as bright as they look in the video, and the angle that you see them from while playing makes them look less bright. In the system settings you can also disable the lights entirely, or set them to static. You can even change the colors if you would like. Definitely a lot of customization options under the hood.
So basically, unless you're old and could afford the real thing, and the best board you've had so far is a 61-key Alesis MIDI controller, this is still insane and worth it, because my ears say YUP!!
I’m 42 and I can afford this but the problem for me is the keyboards I already have taking up all the space and my rme inputs. I could get a double deck stand but I normally prefer sitting and programming/playing.

Roland continues the Jupiter line with more reliable instruments. The Jupiter X has a metal body and would be great for a touring musician much like the Jupiter 8 was. If a crowd hears Jump played on a Jupiter 8 or X they dont care. If someone downloads a song they dont care if its digital hardware or analog hardware or computer vst. I think the Jupiter X sounds close enough for a band and great for home EDM studios. At least we dont have to worry about dead oscillators and recallibrations.
It's funny to read your comment. Do you own any analogue classics? I do - I own most of them. The Jupiter-X has closed the gap between the model of reality and the reality itself. I own some of the finest gear in the world and that line you wrote about "girth" and "richness" and "liquidity" is just far off the mark. I mean, if those words mean something to anyone but you I get that it's your way to share. But, consider this aspect: your views or hearing of reality may not actually be everyone else's reality. Your opinion is respected - so don't get me wrong - but you write like you are some kind of "authority" on the subject and so it does not land like a serious comment. I think you should do an actual A/B compare and put that on youtube for the rest of us who don't perhaps know as much as you might. I am happy to be proven wrong.
I just picked one up and it sounds great but it did lack that umph. What I did to remedy this though was run the synth into a pair of 1073s and it just cut way better. I’m going to run it through a pair of Gyratec IX pres next
It doesn't really sound like one of the original Jupiters to me.. doesn't even sound analog at all, just flat digital and compressed. Hands down..It's an absolutely overpriced digital Keyboard for what it does, that doesn't share anything in common with the originals except parts of the housing..
Honestly Roland could have done much better with the default programming to make it more "Jupiter 8-y". By default most of the patches have the analog drift, detuning and synth age parameters turned off. If you start tweaking the advanced settings you can get it to sound more "analog-y". It has that brassy sound that's hard to replicate once you start playing with it. I was really surprised once I learned more about the power under the hood.
To be fair though, none of the Jupiter 8's on hit recordings have ever been the "real" or "raw" sound of the synths though. The sound of the consoles they were recorded through, and their preamps, and any other external processing they were piped through to spruce them up all colored the sound anyway. In a way the "real" sound of a Jupiter 8 depends on how you look at it. The Jupiter-X can nail the sound of every version and variation of the Jupiter 8 when you really dig into the system and patch parameters.
@@ChrisSmelko - I think the UDO super six does a great job of recreating many classic sounds while adding a new twist to them. Wish it was in my wheelhouse.
