I remember when the censored version was popular here in the USA. Before Christmas shopping season many news outlets were advising people if they were looking for the show on video to make sure they buy the version that version that was shown on TV (most video stores employees knew to ask when someone was buying them if they wanted the one shown on TV here or the imported one). I never really watched it but my friend who watched both versions told me she felt both were well done and that she likes to think of the censored version as just it's own version.
Interesting fact about the name changes: DIC originally considered using the names from the failed Toon Makers pilot as an early Sailor Moon commercials used those names before they were changed
I didn’t grow up with any version as I was a teen in high school when the DIC version of Sailor Moon came out. I’m surprised that there’s not a comparison of censorship between that version and the later English dub. It was interesting how SM open up the interest in anime and manga in the US. I remember my parents questioning why I was so interested in “foreign cartoons “. The funny thing is I grew up watching many movies that were actually Japanese animation, my parents had no idea Rankin Bass studios was the precursor to Studio Ghibli.
it was so weird when they said they were cousins, but the way they acted was off like thats not how you act with a cousin yoo, like it would have been better to leave them be then to give off weird love cousin vibes.
Actually, since Uranus and Neptune's relationship was so subtle, they could've been just good FRIENDS in the original dub. I only say that because being gay/bi wasn't really in the mainstream back then.
I wonder how many Precure squads would be involved unless they decided to group them as the entire franchise (especially since the movies include bringing the teams of some, if not all, of the series together for All Stars)
Now Here's The Thing I Watched Sailor Moon on Toonami defined the 1990's with Dragon Ball Z can't deny that but I was definitely of Fox Kids camp regardless of It being Power Rangers & Digimon most of the time with some awesome yet short lived programs crammed In between

I remember when I first watched Sailor Moon, I did believe the whole Cousin bit. Then again, I was pretty gullible back then. But then I rewatched it again when I was in college, it was just hilarious to see how hard they tried to enforce the whole cousin situation. Just them constantly addressing each other as cousins was laughable. But seeing as this came out in the late 90s when Japanese anime wasn't a big thing in the US yet and they were marketing it towards little girls, I can see why they trying to push the "they're close family" angle.
Yeah...back then Anime was still scene as kids shows (I think even Pokemon censored a few things even though that was written for children but it was due to partial nudity in some episodes which isn't as acceptable here in the USA when shows are marketed towards children). I feel like Adult Swim on Cartoon Network helped change that view as that was how I got into Anime when I was in college (Inuyasha is still a favorite of mine!). I had friends who grew up with "censored" Sailor Moon here in the USA and then later as young adults watched the original one and felt that both versions were great. A good fiend of mine even pointed out that was how she got into anime and at the time there weren't a lot of anime shows that young girls could watch (this was a few years before Pokemon came out and even though I was in high school I loved that show and the games, I still have my version of Pokemon blue).
Not just that, it was a rush hack translation job. Nicole the producer fired the voice actor/director for Melvin and this is the consequence. Bear in mind 2001, gay marriage was legalized where this dub was recorded. As of 2024, it's still illegal in Japan.
@@littlesongbird1sailormoon was literally the debut of anime in north American markets. If I remember correct , the Swedish version had the sailor soliders dying in the last episode of season 1 so .. but they never got to the season when we meet Sailor Uranus and Neptune , they never translated that season
You poor Köttbullar eating bast arts, we Germans got extremely lucky, here they have dubbed and broadcasted all 300 episodes (even the one filler episode, which several countries never even bothered to purchase or to broadcast) as well as the 3 one hour movie specials, without any prudish alterations or horrendous western localization like they have done in the American/Englisch dubbed version. We have been allowed to experience a drunken Usagi, the sacrifices of the inner senshi, Endymion and Princess Serenity (i believe they called her Serena in the English version) get killed in the final two episodes of season 1 , Chibiusa holding a gun against Usagis head and treating her, Chibiusa ägetting S e x uel-assaulted by a boy in her age flashing his junk in front of her starts dancing, also the lesbian relationship between Uranus and Neptun wasn’t altered, as well as keeping Fisheye a cross dressing, ultra feminine homosexual male (although always in women's clothes and feminine gestures he self has always identified himself in the Japanese original as well as in the German version always as a male, when not incognito playing a female character to hide his identity on a mission and to flirt with or to stalk gorgeous men) The only swapped the gender of Zoisite in to a female so that he and Kunzite have been in a heteronormative relationship instead of being gay, but that’s probably because the first season was purchased and broadcasted here in Germany in 1994 by our public broadcaster which was back then compared to nowadays much more conservative.
The funny thing is that all these things have been banned to adjust the anime to western audiences, but Japanese society is far more respectful of their individuals than America is.
Funny thing is, gay marriage and lgtbq+ rights were enshrined in 2001 where this dub was created. As of 2024 (23 YEARS LATER AND 32 YEARS SINCE SM DEBUT), gay people still cannot get married or adopt children in Japan. FAR MORE "respectful", as you say.
The firearm was removed bc the 1996 Scotland mass incident just happened with a bunch of kids the age of chibuusa. It's called respect, yes. Lol Japanese society. Are you asian? Japanese, along with most Asian cultures, are super blunt and rude about individuals' appearances.
The firearm was removed bc the 1996 Scotland mass incident just happened with a bunch of kids the age of chibuusa. I'm sure if a global tragedy happened, Japan would just leave it in. Bc respect.
The blood part is kinda interesting. In western animation there is not much of blood showing, even if people get shot or hurt (Pocahontas and the three guys got shot and no blood anywhere). Miyazaki has said that blood is a part of life and a normal thing, it should not be cencored just because it's scary.
Who remembers the SOS website? Save Our Sailors? Some of us didn’t even get to see the cousins. …I watched in Spanish so I could keep watching. No cousins but I did get female Fisheye with that 😂
Amazing video ms mojo of censored moments in the original sailor moon franchise, fantastic job. Hilarious there sailor cousins in sailor moon funny love it.
Damn..never knew that about Fisheye. Also in the version for my country the end of season 1 was the same as in Japan so it was so heartbreaking, but also the more heartfelt
Changing Usagi to Serena... ok. But in Germany they changed it to "Bunny" I could never understand how parents could name a child like that. And noone belive that Haruka and Michiru are cousins.
This makes so much more sense now. I know they wanted to be "kid friendly" but it changed the storyline. Anyways it don't know any kids who were watching this. I remember hearing the F- word on the bus when I was like 10. But this brings me back to the summer sleep over parties at my friends house staying up to 2am watching Sailor moon. When these unedited dubbed version became available on ebay it was a game changer.
I grow up watching the English dubbed and I remember Haruka (Amara) and Michiru (Michelle) as friends I don't remember anything about them being cousins
Might be because “Lita” asks if they mean they’re like best friends after asking their relationship status. “Michelle” tells her they’re cousins and pretty much grew up together and “Lita” is blushing and asking “oh, you mean like best friends?”.
Luckily, when this was released in the PH, it may have some edits but it is good edit rather than some edits from other countries. That is why I rewatched Sailor Moon in original japanese to feel the true essence of the series. As a gay boy. This is one of my favorite series plus Magic Knight Rayearth.
I'm so happy that we didn't have this much censorship in germany. Although they were still making haruka and michiru cousins, and changed fisheye and zoisite to women. Also saya (season 5) never actually dated usagi.
There's was that moment when Chibiusa got corrupted by Death Phantom and turned jnto black moon princess, she beat down sailor moon and said Mamoru (her future dad) belonged to her now 😬
I went to Mexico to visit my grandparents, and they actually keep Sailor moon normal. I gotta say, the U.S. are quite cowards despite them being quite bad themselves. Heck it’s much better watching it in Spanish since it’s just a Spanish version, unlike the English version were it’s a bit boring
I've never understood y they changed to relationship between Haruka and Michiru from lovers to cousins. They were basically saying being in a same sex relationship was wrong, but being in a incestuous relationship was a okay. Really now.....😒🙄Especially when to left all the lover scenes unedited. 😒🙄
My god to think that Americans missed the Sailor Starlights... In Austria they showed the last season. For me as a kid it was OK, if the Starlights where men and transformed into women or if they where women playing men. I mean, it's a show about magic and so on. Everything could happen... Later I read the manga. That made a lot of things clear.
Haruka and Michiru aren’t the only LGBTQ+ characters to get straightwashed in the Canadian dub. Fish Eye, and the relationship between Kunzite and Zoisite suffered the same fate.
It appears that all gays and effeminate men suffered an identity crisis just because Sailor Moon was first dubbed in English from Canada as a kids show. I never liked the straightwashing Sailor Moon had to suffer when it first came out in English. Conservative societal norms be darned.
Japanese people IRL are getting straightwashed in JAPAN RIGHT NOW. Since it's illegal and all that. Fate I guess. It's been legal where this dub was recorded in 2001.
The Negaverse in Sailor Moon, the Shadow Realm in Yu-Gi-Oh. America really wanted to avoid showing its young audience deaths on screen at all costs. Yet there are American cartoons that show kids dying on screen (Boris in Captain Planet, for example). Changing Zoisite to a woman was certainly an odd choice, especially since the original manga paired each of Sailor Moon's fellow Inner Senshi (yes, Jupiter is an outer planet in the solar system) with one of Prince Endymion's 4 Generals. Though Zoisite and Kunzite becoming a couple after being brainwashed by Queen Beryl did result in some playful flirting between Mars/Rei and Venus/Minako later in the series (maybe not as much in the original anime compared to other adaptations that followed), if Zoisite was originally a woman like the original English dubs portrayed him as, then it would have been another case of removing an LGBTQ couple, as he was paired with Sailor Mars.
Yeah, my country had the North American version I think. In our localization the names were Japanese but I remember Zoisite being voiced by a woman) And even though I was a rather unsuspecting kid it always didn't match up well. And Saior Uranus's character in that version confused me so much but not as much as Sailor Starlights did XD

I'm happy. Viz is no bootleg fan dub. TheRecoveringChristian just likes the DiC for being original whereas the Viz Media dub is a shameless rip-off of the original Japanese version. I'd prefer the Viz Media redub over the DiC and Cloverway dubs because I no longer have to deal with Zoisite's, Tamasaburo's Fisheye's, and Zirconia's identity crisis. What annoyed me from earlier English dubs is feminine men or homosexual characters plus Zirconia suffering an identity crisis. It must have sucked growing up in a conservative society because it's a time where foreign media was nothing special and had to abide by societal norms because many people at the time didn't know that video games and cartoons were enjoyed by everybody, not just children. TheRecoveringChristian is just jealous of the Viz Media dub being the best English dub in existence. It was the identity crisis plus tomboy treatments for a few characters plus Tiger's Eye getting a very manly voice that led to me having disdain for the DiC, Cloverway, and Viz Media dubs of Sailor Moon.
Back in the day my friends and I watched the first half of Stars on fansubbed VHS tapes, SUPER low quality lol we never got the last episodes until we found bootleg dvds
Who didn't see Uranus and Neptune's relationship being changed be #1? Also, what about changing Zirconia from a woman to a man for literally no reason? My guess is to have more male villains because nearly all were women.
making them cousins but leaving in a lot of things like sleeping in the same bed, bathing together and adopting a kid made it worse than them just being gay I never understood why they went they cousin excuse but left both as female they changed one of the first and the Stars.
Stick with the VIZ Japanese series without overdubs to avoid a lot of these edits. I think the Japanese sensibility is unique on its own and the translations are often intriguing. 👩🚀👩🚀
The 90s were way different time than today the 80s and 90s things have been changing in the early 2000s with new laws house kids should be introduced to sings like from anime manga that way they can understand because Japan have very different laws than we did back in the days in the mid-80s and 90s and all that ,
It really was rough growing up in a conservative society. Many international societies weren't so culture friendly in the 90s because foreign media was like a stranger to them. Because it was like a stranger, many of the content in the original version was considered disturbing for children because it looked too mature or violent at first glance. It was hard to believe, but Japan knew what they were doing. Even as an adult male, I did not believe that Fisheye and Zoisite were tomboys. Many television stations pretend that they were tomboys because television producers had to deal with paranoid parents who didn't believe that children should watch cartoons and play video games. It's really surprising that Japan's societal norms are the complete opposite of what America is by now.
Until this video i thought they were both. In Japan you can be in a relationship with your cousin and watching Cardcaptor sakura didn't help me think any different. Tomoyo liking Sakura, the lier guy and his cousin, and May Lin liking Lee.
The issue with the 5th season wasn't censorship. Toei couldn't came to a licensing agreement or wouldn't license Sailor Stars outside of Japan. Given the issues with the gender fluid characters of this arc, it would have been a hard sale at the time.
I used to read episode summaries on the original episodes back during this time while watching the old dub episodes. Therefore I was aware of the three remaining seasons before Cloverway took over. It was after that I started calling the characters by their Japanese names and not the dubbed names.
Make no mistake, Sailor Moon was a nightmare to localize just because it first came out at the time where international societies were very conservative. Foreign media was like a stranger to them, so they had to abide by societal norms. Because Sailor Moon was dubbed in Canada as a kids show by Optimum Productions, the English dubs were forced to get censored. Everything that was said here is why I am happy Sailor Moon got a Viz Media English dub. I'll face it, Canada should not have dubbed anime for children. Leave that to the Americans.

@@GardevoirBoy So what? It’s better than the gore, the skin showing and the drunken kiss. It’s got “talent”, the silliness, the “meatball” head, and the “cousins”. 😂😂😂
@@ColossalKing25 Viz dub is so much better. I find the talent, meatball head, and cousins meme retarded. As much as I hate saying the word retarded, it's just bad. Heroes don't deserve silly dialogue. When you are a hero, you get serious dialogue. So, what you say? Viz Media is arguably the best dub of Sailor Moon. I'd go for the word boobs over talent any day. Makes more sense if you think about it. I grew up watching the Viz Media dub and I don't even regret just watching the Viz Media dub. Trust me, the DiC and Cloverway dubs of Sailor Moon suck. If you want to be smart, go watch the Viz Media dub.
@@ColossalKing25 It's just bad. If you defend the censored dubs, it's your choice. You are not getting a true Sailor Moon experience. Fortunately for me, I'm staying with the Viz Media dub. Yes, it's very hard to tell how the girls sound different from each other, but it's accurately honest to the original Japanese version. For me anyway, there is nothing to defend from the censored dubs. I'm moving on from the past and now that we have the Viz Media dub, I'll stick with that.
@@GardevoirBoylol you make your rounds again eh weeb?
I'm 44 and i still LOVE sailor Moon I've loved it so much that when i had my beautiful daughter i named her serenity. And she lived up to her name she was also a blonde blue eyed can pass off as a Canadian version of sailor Moon my nickname for her was princess now in 2mths she's turning 17
What do you mean they can pass as a Canadian version of sailor moon? Canada is super diverse.
The Nega Verse, the Shadow Realm for Sailor Moon xD
Cool names though 😅
Interesting fact about the name changes: DIC originally considered using the names from the failed Toon Makers pilot as an early Sailor Moon commercials used those names before they were changed
0:01 Sailor Moon Has A Pretty Dress
I didn’t grow up with any version as I was a teen in high school when the DIC version of Sailor Moon came out. I’m surprised that there’s not a comparison of censorship between that version and the later English dub.
It was interesting how SM open up the interest in anime and manga in the US. I remember my parents questioning why I was so interested in “foreign cartoons “.
The funny thing is I grew up watching many movies that were actually Japanese animation, my parents had no idea Rankin Bass studios was the precursor to Studio Ghibli.
"Despite the fact that the characters are between 13 and 16 in the series they run across a bunch of pervert men." Sounds realistic to me.
This is Japan we're talking about
it was so weird when they said they were cousins, but the way they acted was off like thats not how you act with a cousin yoo, like it would have been better to leave them be then to give off weird love cousin vibes.
Actually, since Uranus and Neptune's relationship was so subtle, they could've been just good FRIENDS in the original dub. I only say that because being gay/bi wasn't really in the mainstream back then.

@@collinkeyser6827 Usagi fights Sailor Galaxia and she’s naked for a good portion of the battle. And no it’s not graphic nudity Usagi just looks like a naked Barbie doll. Lol
No the cousins bit came from Cloverway, the 2000s dub. Different team different actors, etc.
We had saban anime from the 70s, 80s, 90s, before but nothing like this (airing along side DBZ and later pokemon). The original music score, pr and promotion shows how much they invested into it, more than other anime.
We have been allowed to experience a drunken Usagi, the sacrifices of the inner senshi, Endymion and Princess Serenity (i believe they called her Serena in the English version) get killed in the final two episodes of season 1 , Chibiusa holding a gun against Usagis head and treating her, Chibiusa ägetting S e x uel-assaulted by a boy in her age flashing his junk in front of her starts dancing, also the lesbian relationship between Uranus and Neptun wasn’t altered, as well as keeping Fisheye a cross dressing, ultra feminine homosexual male (although always in women's clothes and feminine gestures he self has always identified himself in the Japanese original as well as in the German version always as a male, when not incognito playing a female character to hide his identity on a mission and to flirt with or to stalk gorgeous men)
The only swapped the gender of Zoisite in to a female so that he and Kunzite have been in a heteronormative relationship instead of being gay, but that’s probably because the first season was purchased and broadcasted here in Germany in 1994 by our public broadcaster which was back then compared to nowadays much more conservative.
The funny thing is that all these things have been banned to adjust the anime to western audiences, but Japanese society is far more respectful of their individuals than America is.
Curious, could you please describe the self defense laws in Japan? Glorious aren't they?
Funny thing is, gay marriage and lgtbq+ rights were enshrined in 2001 where this dub was created. As of 2024 (23 YEARS LATER AND 32 YEARS SINCE SM DEBUT), gay people still cannot get married or adopt children in Japan. FAR MORE "respectful", as you say.

We also have to remember that pre 2010 anime had a little (or lot) of predatory aspects. No 14 year old should be with an 18 year old...
It seems that Usagi may have mistaken the drink for a real punch.
Gearing this show towards children was a huge mistake of localization for the states
Sailor Moon Cosmos: The Movie is out now on Netflix!!!

I'm so happy that we didn't have this much censorship in germany. Although they were still making haruka and michiru cousins, and changed fisheye and zoisite to women.
Also saya (season 5) never actually dated usagi.

They covered that in the video...
The video covered all three of these
It appears that all gays and effeminate men suffered an identity crisis just because Sailor Moon was first dubbed in English from Canada as a kids show. I never liked the straightwashing Sailor Moon had to suffer when it first came out in English. Conservative societal norms be darned.
Wow, just like in the video, what a weird coincidence...
And Saior Uranus's character in that version confused me so much but not as much as Sailor Starlights did XD

the cousins have to be number one hands down here, its still talked about years later even after the more modern release and redub... that and they got in hot water when viz media goofed in the limited edition box sets and instead of calling em lovers or partners for there friend link tree they instead called em friends... the biggest power couple keeps on going

The Sailor Stars has to be on the list. They caused the final season from airing on USA tv.
In Italy we do call them warriors though.
Although they change the Starlights in a drastic way too...

The redub added everything that was changed back in.

It was after that I started calling the characters by their Japanese names and not the dubbed names.
sailor Moon is so amazing 😊
The prudeness of the American censors makes me pee myself with laughter 😄

Make no mistake, Sailor Moon was a nightmare to localize just because it first came out at the time where international societies were very conservative. Foreign media was like a stranger to them, so they had to abide by societal norms. Because Sailor Moon was dubbed in Canada as a kids show by Optimum Productions, the English dubs were forced to get censored. Everything that was said here is why I am happy Sailor Moon got a Viz Media English dub. I'll face it, Canada should not have dubbed anime for children. Leave that to the Americans.
