I love those old Owners Manuals, they actually sounded like they were written by a human. They told you all the same stuff that the modern ones do, but they didn't sound nearly as robotic and corporate. A great example are the Manuals written by AMC in the '70s. They actually encouraged you to maintain the car yourself, instead of just taking it to the shop, for example telling you how to properly store the car for long periods of time (draining the tank or telling you to pour oil down the carb, yes they actually said that!). The entire Manuals were written in a down to earth tone, as if you were talking to a friend not a corporation. Sadly these things faded out in the late 90's.

We used to play Ps2 games on a tiny box TV in an excursion lol. My friends parents had the middle seats out and we had a whole room back there pretty much.
My best friend's family had one with the 7.3 growing up. I can remember being in the 3rd row on a 9 hour trip to the beach just being ridiculously comfortable and unbothered. They had like 7 or 8 kids and that thing would haul everyone and a week's worth of gear no problem. What a beast.
I always enjoy when Doug just does the local cars you would see daily on the road. For some reason, I find it way more relatable and interesting versus when he does the elite-type model cars.
My dad owned a small Ford dealership when I was a kid. Our 5 person family was sooooo comfortable in our demo Excursion on road trips... Going from Texas to Wyoming was one of the highlights of my childhood and it was made all the better by the Excursion! I still get excited when I see them out and about!
@Jack Torrance 333 Archives I like Ford for the most part. Some of the offerings for the cost aren’t worth it. Especially with the quality issues, there are better options.
I do, but not necessarily because I think all new cars are bland or the same. It's because with a review of a 1995 XYZ model, it's an interesting look into what cars were like in 1995 or 2003 or 91 or 85, etc. Like the Bronco one was interesting because you saw that car bumpers even by the mid 90s could still just hang off the end and people were fine with it. Or you're reminded that minivans only had one sliding door. You see a handful of 2021 models, you get a sense of what remaining 2021 model videos are going to be like. And you're already familiar with most of the features of new cars from your own experience.
I dont like the rhetoric on newer cars being more boring since I think newer cars are more of a necessity to record for the incentive of being new so he records lots of newer vehicles that don't have many quirks since they're mass market and have less of a niche buyers with some obvious exceptions. However with older cars he gets to pick and choose and quirky old cars will still prove profitable with views normally, and he won't necessarily review something like old camrys or old rav 4s since whats the point? There are aspects of newer cars that can make them more bland like increased regulations, but overall lots of those regulations from a strictly non enthusaist standpoint are pretty helpful especially since those impact cars that enthusiasts wouldn't normally be the target audience for such cars.

Yep. Doug says it doesn't look great because it doesn't have swoopy lines and such, but also says he loves boxy SUVs. This is probably one of the most handsome boxy SUVs of its time.
Doug speaking at a funeral: There are so many things to say about the deceased, but before I get started, let me tell you about my new site, cars and bids.
I drove a 2004 F350 super duty for a work truck back in the day and it had that same dash layout, including the pullout cup holder tray and the power point with the little roll up cover. It was a freaking workhorse, I drove it every day for over 500k kms with no problems. Ford knows how to build a truck.
Growing up my family burned through two of these! Both v10 and we'd haul the whole family cross country towing a 2 ton boat! I eventually learned to drive in our 2005 limited. When prom rolled around my friends and I (lovingly calling it Olga) opted for the Excursion instead of the limo! This beast brings me tons of nostalgia.
My mom had one of these back in the day and she was (still is) such a badass. She used to whip donuts in the mall parking lot with me, my brother and sister in the back seats. She also used to parallel park this tank in front of school like nothing.
When I was growing up my friend's dad had one of these, he also had a Viper, an NSX and an S series for the wife + I think 1 other practical car. He only had 2 kids, but he'd drive the Excursion and just give everyone rides home from wherever his kids were hanging out at
@@horrerahashmi8306 deleted and tuned 6.0 diesel gets very good milage for a 4 ton vehicle however the 6.8 v10 gasoline engine in this video gets terrible mileage
Yeah Doug is horrible at this car review. His brain is too fried. He's trying to compare this old vehicle that had all the bells and whistles to the vehicles we have on the road today. Obviously captain einstein!! They won't compare at all! But he's just so slow minded that he can't seem to stop and appreciate back in the day these where the best amenities available.
I remember once as a kid in the summer of 2005 (I believe I had just barely turned 9 at the time), I was out at what was a Kia dealership at the time in Sandy, UT on 10600 South just west of I-15 and on full display on their showroom floor was a car stereo that had - yes, you guessed it - a VCR! One of the other more memorable experiences I had at that dealership was standing under the path of a major transmission line among the cars they had for sale on their outdoor lot for the 2005 model year and I could actually hear the 60 Hz buzzing of the power lines.
Never going to forget being stuck behind one of these in a McDonald's drive thru for 12 minutes because his order was 11 bags. Not just 11 paper bags, but 11 of the bigger plastic bags you can stuff 2 or 3 paper bags into.

There is a shop in Oklahoma, where they can take f250 and convert them to excursion. So if you want the up to date modern version of an excursion they can convert a 250 into a excursion.
doesnt sound right though, the excursion has a large body on a truck frame, the F250 has a separate cab and bed, unless they chop the back of the cab off and build the ass end like a conversion van.
my family used to have one of these as a kid. i remember messing around in the huge cargo area while on the freeway. never really thought how insane that was for a passenger vehicle until later in life
Men please never sell it! Even if you need money at one point, don’t do it! You will regret this for the rest of your life! When these become classic cars they will be sought after because of their rarity and novelty status as a huge car with a big Diesel engine(or a gasoline V10)! This was the pinnacle of big family cars and unfortunately it will never come back. If you keep it, it will always remind you of a simpler, better time and it will make you smile!
Back when Ford named all of their SUVs/Crossovers with the letter E. Excursion, Expedition, Explorer, Edge, Escape, Etc. the 2000s were the Wild West of automobiles.
Bronco... Taurus... crown victoria... Aspire not all the SUVs were named with E, and not all passenger cars were F I can say that because two of the vehicles you said Expedition and explorer were from the 90s, same with the sedans. also JWC with the five hundred that wasnt originally a taurus, it was actually meant to replace the taurus... but it didnt make sense, since it was just the exact same thing, front wheel drive v-6 powered large family sedan so it was given a rename, the reason it was done was because at the time the five hundred was actually going to replace two cars, the taurus and the crown victoria, since the last year for the crown vic was 07 the five hundred had been brought to market in 05 the original year the crown vic was meant to go away. which didnt happen, but then it still didnt make much sense so they gave up and just slapped the taurus name on it and kept rolling out new models until 2 years ago when they killed the entire car line.
not actually it was a stock option from ford both second and third row, the screens being branded audiovox was actually because the idea of screens in SUVs was very new, i own a yukon XL denali with stock rear seat screens and its the same way, looks aftermarket, says audiovox but it was put their as part of GMCs parts list.
I thought it was pretty obvious that it wasn’t a factory piece, but yet I had to listen to Doug the auto expert drone on about it including all his made up ideas about why it was there.
Before there was an Excursion, there was a company that converted a crew-cab into a giant SUV. It was expensive, but I recall seeing them in the 1990s. It was called the Centurion.
I'm not a car enthusiast at all but Doug makes his videos so interesting I'm addicted to them! The way he talks about everything is just...perfect. This guy is so good at explaining things that he could probably make algebra seem like the most interesting thing in the whole world. It's astonishing!
This is exactly why car enthusiasts roll their eyes at so much of what he says Smart guy, appealing to the masses for views, knowing how limited the automotive enthusiast population is in comparison
My parents bought an eddie bauer one brand new in 2002 and that was our family car. 450k miles later, my mom still uses it as her daily driver and actually prefers to drive it over the porsche cayenne turbo they bought lol
My family had a diesel excursion for 20 years but im still watching the whole video lmao Edit: the fuel tank on ours was 40+ gallons and cost $100+ to fill up. Another example of how gorgeously overkill this truck was
@@Sodom_and_Gomorrah I mean at the end of the day what difference does it make? Fill up once for $250 and last for longer or fill up more often just cause its in smaller lumps.
My uncle accidentally got one of these off of eBay by messing around on it and putting a ridiculous bid and actually winning it. He ended up giving it to my cousin as a college car. It was surreal riding in it. We fit 9 very large people in it for a buffet dinner one time and I was the 9th person laying in the back on the floor. Ah the early 00s huge suv days.
when I was a kid these interior features were top notch. you were the envy of all your friends if your parents had a vehicle like this. today just about every car in production has a touch screen and a bunch of bells and whistles, but these were some seriously premo features in the 90's and 2000's. my aunt had an expedition with a built in screen and VCR, my cousin and I would sit in the way back watching movies on long trips.
My old captain in the Marines had an Excursion with the 7.3 powerstroke that he converted to run in vegetable oil that he processed in his garage and got for free from restaurants in SoCal
My dad had a 2004 6.0L Turbo Diesel growing up and it's a vehicle I look back at it rather fondly. We would tow a 35 foot trailer and had enough room for 2 families and luggage. It may not have been the most reliable (particularly the turbo) but it never left us stranded! Some day I hope to add one to my fleet. Also, the side mounted spare tire saved my life as a child sitting in the third row from a 80+ pound boulder that shattered the glass and bounced off it while visiting Yosemite.
I think this was the inspiration for the "Maibatsu Monstrosity" in the GTA universe. It was said you didn't need to drive it to get where you need to go, you simply climb in and get out the other side and you're there.
This brings back memories. My mom had a 2000 Limited Excursion V10 that she bought new Identical to the one Doug is reviewing except hers was a 4x4. That truck would haul anything and it was amazing in the snow!
@@rawr51919 That's what I'm always saying when people complain about the size of that thing, it surely sucks as a city vehicle but in the role of a camping vehicle it really shines, considering most RV are bigger and worse to maneuver and don't have 4wd
To anyone that owns an excursion: My uncle owned one brand new, and the biggest upgrade he did to it was switch out the springs to F250 springs at the dealer. It’s such a simple thing to do but helps it drive way better, especially today since I assume now most excursions have very worn out suspension.

My dad put a side facing rear seat in our suburban (which is still going) to seat our family of ten. Made for rough road trips with all the cargo at your feet.
These things are truly huge. A good friend of mine has a V10 version, and we took it up the mountains for a cabin trip with 6 fully grown men and all our stuff. Easily packed all our bags, and as a person that is Dougs height who was sitting in the third row, I actually had plenty of space. Felt really comfortable going up the tight snowy roads and I always thought about how impressive of a truck it is
@@joshuagrossman2902 it was absolutely terrible. It was bouncing from 7 to 10mpg the entire time, but it was a solid ride the entire time up the snow! And ya thats good observation. His family was definitely well off. That was their fourth car at the time and they barely put miles on it, plus they owned the cabin we were driving to as well, so I don't think the mpg was much of an issue for them lol.
When I was in high school one of my friend’s had this as her first car. Her dad bought one brand new for her because he wanted her to be in the largest, safest car on the road. If anyone hit her they’d get hurt, not her lol.
I can't tell if he's selfless for trying to keep her safe, or selfish for giving the largest car on the road to the most inexperienced driver on the road.
I wish my late father bought this monster for my sister for safety. Instead she bought a brand new ' mickey mouse '. Lol...That's his definition for ' little car.'
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!!! Growing up, my mom drove a Silver 05 Limited Excursion and I LOVED IT. She’s 5’4 and 120 pounds and she drove that Excursion, lifted too by the way, like nobodies business. She traded it in back in 2013 for a Limited Expedition and I was devastated. I always wanted it to be my car when I was able to drive but sadly never got the chance. I know it would be completely impractical to have now but I would die to get my hands on one. I’ve never been in a car that was so comfortable and spacious as that. I miss it sooo much. It truly remains unmatched.
This was my family car for many years. My family had a big green cast iron v10 excursion, we called it “The Beast.” It was the only car we ever named. It was big enough that my brother and I would use the 2nd and 3rd row seats as beds on long road trips. We sold it around 2015.
I have a 2003 with the factory DVD package that I’ve owned for 13 years. It only has one screen right behind the driver, so yes that one is aftermarket. Did you see the amps for the sound system under the second row seats?
I only knew one person who had an Excursion growing up. The substitute teacher everyone hated in middle school who needed the size to haul all her fat and the cooler she used as a lunch box.

You don't have to imagine it. There are a few companies that do a full conversion. You need a 2011 to 2016 crew cab superduty and an excursion. They will cut the cab and fit it to your superduty. It looks factory when complete.
I'm a single 36 year old man with 0 kids and literally never tow or haul anything more than a push mower a half dozen times a year... But I've always loved and wanted an Excursion. But I realize I most definitely do not need one. Want vs need = Not the same. 😆
I have a 2005 V10 4X4 Excursion with less than 70K miles, and I only have 2 kids and I never tow anything. So it's obviously under-utilized, but I DON'T CARE! I LOVE MY BEAST! I also removed the bulky spare tire and strapped down my toolbox and a foldable cargo wagon in that corner. My girls love this vehicle. You could live in this thing!

One of my best memories from HS was me and my friends taking a trip to the beach in Plymouth, MA at like 1 am to go smoke and drink. My friends parents were super rich, so along with one of these they had a brand new 2018 wrangler, 04 7 series, and a few other cars. I was designated driver so unfortunately I had to stay sober but I was fortunate enough to drive this beast all the way to the beach. It felt like a literal tank. I remember getting in and looking behind me to all my friends… the trunk area looked so far away from the driver seat it was crazy
Doug mostly nailed it. I owned an Excursion for 5 years. If you need it, nothing else compares. If you don't need it, it's just silly. Once a couple of my children grew up, I downsized to an explorer. It really was one of my favorite vehicles that I've owned. The main reason I traded it was fuel economy.
This one has a charge point for your kids to charge their devices, like smartphones. In the way back seat...😳 Import luxury vehicles costing almost a $100.000 have that. Good luck..👍🏻
They're pretty neat, personally I'd hunt down a diesel, but the V10 is a good second option, just be prepared for your wallet to feel the pain. Whatever you do don't buy the gas V8, the gas V8 is soooo slow.

who else thinks that doug's reviews of older cooler weirder cars like this are more enjoyable than his reviews of new cars just coming out
Newer cars are pretty boring, most "quirks" are almost exclusively in the infotainment system.
The high $ cars none of us will be able to afford as well.
I do enjoy the more common cars and older cars that we dont often get to see.

And they named all their passenger cars with the letter F. Focus Fiesta Festiva Fusion and.... FIVE HUNDRED?????? Taurus became 500 overnight. WTF
Bronco... Taurus... crown victoria... Aspire not all the SUVs were named with E, and not all passenger cars were F I can say that because two of the vehicles you said Expedition and explorer were from the 90s, same with the sedans. also JWC with the five hundred that wasnt originally a taurus, it was actually meant to replace the taurus... but it didnt make sense, since it was just the exact same thing, front wheel drive v-6 powered large family sedan so it was given a rename, the reason it was done was because at the time the five hundred was actually going to replace two cars, the taurus and the crown victoria, since the last year for the crown vic was 07 the five hundred had been brought to market in 05 the original year the crown vic was meant to go away. which didnt happen, but then it still didnt make much sense so they gave up and just slapped the taurus name on it and kept rolling out new models until 2 years ago when they killed the entire car line.

family of 6 my dad bought a 2003 excursion new and we took it to california and back 4 times and texas 3 times with full luggage for everyone and enough space to be comfortable for hrs memories!
Imagine how cool an Excursion would look based on the 2021 boxy f250.
You don't have to imagine it. There are a few companies that do a full conversion. You need a 2011 to 2016 crew cab superduty and an excursion. They will cut the cab and fit it to your superduty. It looks factory when complete.
Look up customautosbytim he makes them
The Secret Service has one the Roadrunner than looks badass in black. I do think Ford would bring it back but as an EUV
I removed the 3rd row seat, and I placed a foldable cushion, blankets, and pillows for my 2 daughters to relax and play. I also removed the bulky spare tire and strapped down my toolbox and a foldable cargo wagon in that corner. My girls love this vehicle. You could live in this thing!
Are you virgin?
Haha I am 48 and single kids are grown and I just got one 6 months ago and I will be buried in mine whenever I die.thats how much I love it and I don't tow anything either.GET ONE 🔥🔥
@Glasspack40 I am 6 foot 2 and at my age it's the most comfortable truck I've ever owned.i don't even care about the gas mileage.
Nearly the same situation, no kids but I tow cars and have giant dogs. 6.0 gets fantastic mpg but makes you pay for it in maintenance. Favorite vehicle ever when it runs.
Parents had one of these growing up, drove it from Colorado to Maine countless times. Legendary car.
Girlfriend: How big is it
Doug: It's HUGE-ER but do you mind checking out CARSSS and BIDSSSS?
I’ve wanted one of these for years. Might have to throw a bid out on this puppy.
This one has a charge point for your kids to charge their devices, like smartphones.
In the way back seat...😳
Import luxury vehicles costing almost a $100.000 have that.
Good luck..👍🏻
They're pretty neat, personally I'd hunt down a diesel, but the V10 is a good second option, just be prepared for your wallet to feel the pain. Whatever you do don't buy the gas V8, the gas V8 is soooo slow.
Not trying to egg you on, but if Doug's right about the possible pricetag, that will be a lot of car for your buck, hope it works out!
@@Games_and_Music At what point is it no longer a lot of truck for the buck? Its currently at $10k. I feel like that's still not bad at all for this.
@@Chris10156 Doug said 10 to 15 grand, so it's well within that margin.
we have a big family, our 2000 excursion has kicked ass since new, gone on countless road trips, towed big trailers and even gone off roading with it. Nothing can match how awesome this truck is for a road tripper. even if its just us 4 cruising its unbelievably comfy, you'll never get as good of a sleep than laying in the third row driving across the state
"Doug is the type of guy to lick his finger before flipping a page, on an iPad..."
This was commented before
Doug, the type of guy who doesn't put his hands in his pockets when it's cold outside because he's got the gloves in there.

i see this joke copy pasted on every doug video
@jorge ronas, I put the quotes to show that these ain't my words. I remember this comment from a video a while ago. I do not remember who wrote it so I can't give credit.
Road trip with friends and a PS2 in the back... What a Dream!
My cousin had Nintendo 64
My dad 2002 Expedition he had the ps2 installed with the tvs on the headrests with the dvd player
Doug DeMuro: "It spells out 'FUEL FILL' like you're an idiot"
Me, who only learned in 2013 that the little arrow tells you which side your fuel door is on: *hangs head in shame*
The arrow on the fuel gauge was in its infancy in 2000 and it wasn’t a thing on every car yet.
Exactly! I didn't know until I watched one of Doug's videos.
Same my 60 year old dad who grew up working on cars only learned about it a couple years ago so I was in my early 20s by the time I heard about it
@@504RoadTrips my old 94 ford had the arrow next to FUEL showing what side the tank was.
@@ryanmalin Ford started putting the arrow on some of their cars in 1989. It took a while to catch on to the rest of the automotive market. My 1998 Mustang did not have it. From my own experience, GM wasn’t using it on all (any?) of their vehicles yet in 2001. I believe the first car I had it in was a 2005 Chrysler.
My family had that EXACT Excursion. Same Trim level, same paint, same pin stripe. Was a great vehicle (I have 5 brothers which necessitated a large vehicle).
I’ve been waiting for an excursion review for so long. Finally
Didn’t know the Empire State Building cared about a 21 year old Ford 😆😆
Idk? Amen...
So it's actually not a Ford Excursion.. it's Ford HUGE Excursion :p

Bring in the potato salad ! :p
"It does 0 to 60... slowly." Still a pretty good pace when you consider it weighs about 4 tons.
The gas ones are slow but my tuned 6.0 diesel would do 0-60 mph in about 5 seconds flat from a 4x4 10-20psi boosted launch and thats with 6" of lift and 35" tires
@@rodgersmith3053 and you only burn a whole dinosaur worth of crude oil doing it ;)
@@JordanCheyneComedy not really in my 7.3 i always step on it and it really flies when that turbo gets spinning with out a oil problem
@@markitos3006 I was just talking about fossil fuel in general. If you want to accelerate 4 tons that quickly you are going to consume a lot of energy in short order. Sounds like good fun though.
I'm surprised you don't have to register it with the city council as a historic building anytime you park it.
I love the 2001 Excursion limited. It is absolutely, by far, the best looking full size SUV ever. I love the interior and the exterior. I’m am hanging on to this vehicle as long as I can. I only have 90,000 miles on it and it has been very dependable at hauling trailers and boats. I alway get compliments on how beautiful this vehicle looks so I totally disagree with the comment that this vehicle isn’t a good looking vehicle. But to each his own I guess. It is nice to see many people are still buying these used SUV’s.
