Growing up being 1 of 7 kids when my parents bought their excursion was heaven for our road trips. We regularly went to national parks and would camp 2 - 4 weeks at a time. Parents sold it finally as we all grew up and moved out. Had a little over 500k on it.
I can remember sitting in the third-row seats for hours on end when our family would go on road trips in our excursion. My dad has been daily driving his for around 20 years and its racked up over 300,000 miles. I have the sound of the diesel engine engraved in my mind as he would pull up to the house and the rumble from the engine would shake the walls.
My first new vehicle was a 2000 Excursion. No need for a tent, a double air mattress fit perfectly in the back with enough room at my feet to keep all my gear warm and dry. I never got tired of hearing "It's so big!" when girls got in for the first time. My response was always the same: "That's the only time you'll say that tonight."
🤣
Girls: "It's so big!"
Me: "That's what she said!"
No, Mike Clark, if by girls, you mean women that you dated, I would have said, "Well, I hope that is not the only time that you said that phrase around me today."
😂😂
Oof
20 years ago my dad bought a brand new 2001 Limited with the 7.3 diesel. I now own it with 375,000 miles. Still runs like a dream and tows like a champ. I plan on keeping it as long as I can.
7.3 is where is at, I had a change to get one for 2k a few months ago but my wife said no . Now I cant find one for under 10k. I still have nightmares of when she said no

I love those old Owners Manuals, they actually sounded like they were written by a human. They told you all the same stuff that the modern ones do, but they didn't sound nearly as robotic and corporate. A great example are the Manuals written by AMC in the '70s. They actually encouraged you to maintain the car yourself, instead of just taking it to the shop, for example telling you how to properly store the car for long periods of time (draining the tank or telling you to pour oil down the carb, yes they actually said that!). The entire Manuals were written in a down to earth tone, as if you were talking to a friend not a corporation. Sadly these things faded out in the late 90's.
Damn, I miss AMC.
I’d love to see a scan of those some day
The 90's were really the last era of cars that you could feasably work on yourself, and i mean proper maintainance, not just fluid changes. Wouldn't dare touch anything on my 2017 lancer, but ill gladly work on my 93 f350 all day
Unfortunately everything good faded out in the 90s..
And then the 2010s came with smartphones and social media which destroyed everything.
Instruction manuals are full of idiot pictures today and that's it..
I always enjoy when Doug just does the local cars you would see daily on the road. For some reason, I find it way more relatable and interesting versus when he does the elite-type model cars.

Im watching this on my phone while sitting in my 05 Excursion. Life has come full circle it seems.
Ha! Same here! It’s interesting to note the subtle changes from the ‘00 to the ‘05. Like mine has an in dash cd changer and the pop out cup holders are slightly different.
I thought this one having a factory DVD AND VHS unit was super cool. Though mine only has the DVD player. And one screen for the middle row :/
Also by 05 the Limited was a single color, two tone was an Eddie Bauer. Mine also does not have the screens going to the back though honestly that looks aftermarket or dealer added. I have the single screen for the 2nd row with oberhead DVD player and the inputs are on the DVD player too.

One can only imagine a 2021 excursion with the 7.3 Godzilla or 6.7 powerstroke with the 10 speed.
Ford brought back the Bronco, so maybe a new Excursion will appear someday. The 1050 lb-ft of torque from the modern Powerstroke diesel would create an SUV with unrivaled towing capability.

Maybe she's saying: Hey it's Doug DeMuro in that huge Expedition.
who else thinks that doug's reviews of older cooler weirder cars like this are more enjoyable than his reviews of new cars just coming out
Newer cars are pretty boring, most "quirks" are almost exclusively in the infotainment system.
I do, but not necessarily because I think all new cars are bland or the same. It's because with a review of a 1995 XYZ model, it's an interesting look into what cars were like in 1995 or 2003 or 91 or 85, etc. Like the Bronco one was interesting because you saw that car bumpers even by the mid 90s could still just hang off the end and people were fine with it. Or you're reminded that minivans only had one sliding door. You see a handful of 2021 models, you get a sense of what remaining 2021 model videos are going to be like. And you're already familiar with most of the features of new cars from your own experience.
The high $ cars none of us will be able to afford as well.
I dont like the rhetoric on newer cars being more boring since I think newer cars are more of a necessity to record for the incentive of being new so he records lots of newer vehicles that don't have many quirks since they're mass market and have less of a niche buyers with some obvious exceptions. However with older cars he gets to pick and choose and quirky old cars will still prove profitable with views normally, and he won't necessarily review something like old camrys or old rav 4s since whats the point? There are aspects of newer cars that can make them more bland like increased regulations, but overall lots of those regulations from a strictly non enthusaist standpoint are pretty helpful especially since those impact cars that enthusiasts wouldn't normally be the target audience for such cars.
I do enjoy the more common cars and older cars that we dont often get to see.

To anyone that owns an excursion: My uncle owned one brand new, and the biggest upgrade he did to it was switch out the springs to F250 springs at the dealer. The techs thought it was pointless, but as soon as they drove it, said it felt way better and overall more stable. My mom had one of these back in the day and she was (still is) such a badass. She used to whip donuts in the mall parking lot with me, my brother and sister in the back seats. She also used to parallel park this tank in front of school like nothing.
@Doug DeMouro fake
They are actually very easy to drive and park....
Is she single 🔥🔥
@@bigmike9527 no
Doug is the type of guy to read the owner's manual to his kids at bedtime
Best one I’ve seen in awhile
This is genius cause they get bored and fell asleep
What a good idea 💡
Unless one is so unlucky that a child stay awake and one gets 🥱
I had a laugh when he mentioned page 92. I wonder how many actually read an owners manual.
And crack dad jokes about seatbelt safety
My best friend's mom had a diesel one when we were in elementary school. You'd always be able to see it in car line because it was twice as long as the other Grand Cherokees, Suburbans, Land Cruisers and Discoveries you'd see. One time we were on a trip from north Georgia to PCB in it. We had myself, my friend, his brother and sister and their two best friends. The second row had a PS2 running Sonic Heroes and the 3rd row had a GameCube running Melee. The early-mid 2000s was genuinely a great time to be alive.
'02 7.3 diesel owner here. 10:18... with the rear seat out (weighs about 100 lbs so bring help and a hernia belt) and the floor all the way flat, you can easily carry 26 sheets of half inch drywall in an Exy. Above that, the spare tire leans inwards slightly and blocks getting more in. Weight wise, it handled it well, and actually rode like a caddy.
Back when Ford named all of their SUVs/Crossovers with the letter E. Excursion, Expedition, Explorer, Edge, Escape, Etc. the 2000s were the Wild West of automobiles.
And they named all their passenger cars with the letter F. Focus Fiesta Festiva Fusion and.... FIVE HUNDRED?????? Taurus became 500 overnight. WTF
Bronco... Taurus... crown victoria... Aspire not all the SUVs were named with E, and not all passenger cars were F I can say that because two of the vehicles you said Expedition and explorer were from the 90s, same with the sedans. also JWC with the five hundred that wasnt originally a taurus, it was actually meant to replace the taurus... but it didnt make sense, since it was just the exact same thing, front wheel drive v-6 powered large family sedan so it was given a rename, the reason it was done was because at the time the five hundred was actually going to replace two cars, the taurus and the crown victoria, since the last year for the crown vic was 07 the five hundred had been brought to market in 05 the original year the crown vic was meant to go away. which didnt happen, but then it still didnt make much sense so they gave up and just slapped the taurus name on it and kept rolling out new models until 2 years ago when they killed the entire car line.
@@jwc3104 “500” was used for many full sized cars that Ford made during the 50s and 60s. Just like the galaxie 500 and fairlane 500.
Ford still does name all their suvs with an e
EcoSport
Imagine how cool an Excursion would look based on the 2021 boxy f250.
You don't have to imagine it. There are a few companies that do a full conversion. You need a 2011 to 2016 crew cab superduty and an excursion. They will cut the cab and fit it to your superduty. It looks factory when complete.
Look up customautosbytim he makes them
The Secret Service has one the Roadrunner than looks badass in black. I do think Ford would bring it back but as an EUV
love the comeback of the commentary on the scores
My family takes a trip to Mexico every year in their excursion, makes it there and back no issues each year to this day. Really is a neat truck
My family had a diesel excursion for 20 years but im still watching the whole video lmao
Edit:
the fuel tank on ours was 40+ gallons and cost $100+ to fill up. Another example of how gorgeously overkill this truck was
My dad had one and it cost him $250 to fill up a whole tank. Though ofc he never did because who wants to spend 250 bucks on gas.
@@Mr._Paleozoic I mean at the end of the day what difference does it make? Fill up once for $250 and last for longer or fill up more often just cause its in smaller lumps.
We bought a used one and whoever had it before us put a 65 gallon tank in it. Was great on trips but sucked at the gas station.
It could tow a house lol
Yeah my friend spends about 120$ to fill his diesel powerstroke excursion.
20:05 "Be careful honey there's a schizophrenic man driving a very large truck next to us."
22:03 also got caught starring.
That crv looks like a sedan in front of this rig
@@gamerandcontroller9129 yess lfmaoo she looked so amazed like tf is this a converted f-150 into a suv 😩
she like we used to drive this when we were young
My parents had the 2002 V-10 4x4 great truck, I’ve since joined the army and they’ve sold it in the past 2 years... I will always love the excursion
My dad had a used white on around 2012-15 or so and I gotta say out of all the cars we owned, the excursion was the most reliable, and most fun, car we ever had. I remember driving to every morning in it, going on road trips, etc. It was amazing. To this day whenever I'm with my dad and we see one on the road we start reminiscing about the awesome memories we had with that old thing, and to this day he'll still say that he wishes he never sold it
08 nExpedition, jut turned 93k. Started it up the other morning and was greeted with a main bearing knock
I had more legroom in an 02 Silverado...just cant like this thing dont trust it .SAme with a '13 Lariat with 18k miles .Left me stranded 3 times in 6 mos....done.
My uncle accidentally got one of these off of eBay by messing around on it and putting a ridiculous bid and actually winning it. He ended up giving it to my cousin as a college car. It was surreal riding in it. We fit 9 very large people in it for a buffet dinner one time and I was the 9th person laying in the back on the floor. Ah the early 00s huge suv days.
Your uncle sounds like a nice person
Excursion owner here... Just FYI for everyone, that overhead console for the 2nd and 3rd row is aftermarket.
Im pretty sure it was an option not to many people went with, ours has one for the second row
Nah 3rd row is definitely aftermarket but for the second row it was an option
not actually it was a stock option from ford both second and third row, the screens being branded audiovox was actually because the idea of screens in SUVs was very new, i own a yukon XL denali with stock rear seat screens and its the same way, looks aftermarket, says audiovox but it was put their as part of GMCs parts list.
came here to say this too
I thought it was pretty obvious that it wasn’t a factory piece, but yet I had to listen to Doug the auto expert drone on about it including all his made up ideas about why it was there.
As a person who has a 2000 Ford F-350 Super Duty. I can confirm that the interior (despite the third row, tvs, and electrical features in the back) is practically the same
Which is good i can’t drive yet but when i can i want an excursion idc what trim i just care if it has a 7.3 i want a 7.3.
Love your channel and passion
When this pulls up into the forest, every wild hunt-able animal trembles in fear
it's game over!
Camouflage hood skirt... no deer was safe
hunting is for schmucks. leave the critters alone. theyve already been terrorized by humans in a plethora of other ways.
@@Lakamakashaka are you a vegan
@@Lakamakashaka you gotta tell that to the excursion
I think this was the inspiration for the "Maibatsu Monstrosity" in the GTA universe. It was said you didn't need to drive it to get where you need to go, you simply climb in and get out the other side and you're there.
Remember the commercials & slogans?
"Mine's bigger!"
HEAD RADIO
it would be "vapid" that's the gta equivalent for ford.
Hahahaha what a fun bit of lore
@@coolshift6783 Maibatsu was the make-believe brand the Monstrosity was under...
Two odd things. My family had two of these growing up. The v10 gas which we then traded for the 7.3 diesel. For the 7 tree we got these dope seats for the rear storage area that faced the rear. We had a big family so we needed those. I have a lot of memories sitting in those seats. The other odd thing is sometimes around where I live we see a white SIX door excursions. Apparently some company does a f250 excursion mashup and combines the two. It’s crazy how long it is
This is one of the greatest videos I've seen of yours so far
My old captain in the Marines had an Excursion with the 7.3 powerstroke that he converted to run in vegetable oil that he processed in his garage and got for free from restaurants in SoCal
That’s epic lmao
WOw I ALSO HAVE A FORD X 2002 7.3 THAT I ALSO RUN IN VEGATABLE OIL. I HAVE HASD IT 18 YEARS AND NO PLANS TO GET RID OF IT
What helps is that these would be fit for the military, they have that big rough n toughness to them
This would be an AMAZING road trip vehicle. Endless space, comfy as hell, and you have 4WD for finding a camping spot.
It would be a very expensive road trip because of gas
Can confirm, it’s an amazing road trip vehicle. My family has used this car for vacations since I was in elementary school and I’m in college now and we still use it for vacations.
It was the type of car for the upper middle class family from Chicagoland to go up to their summer home in Wisconsin.
Just point it in the general direction and hit the gas pedal.
@@Yeen125 Or maybe a road trip to Walley World?
Thank you for your APPRECIATION to your subscribers Doug!!
Definitely wasn't in demand a few years ago when I received one through a family member. Took me a year to sell it because litterally nobody wanted it and dealerships flat out refused to make a trade for it.
