The discussion about taking risks in clinics is so interesting. When Anika did a clinic in Sydney recently, someone asked her a question, and Anika just jumped up on the kit and said "well, this is something I've been working on", and she played some cool stuff. But she needed to have a few goes at it before she nailed it. It was so refreshing to see this honesty in a clinic... the working it out bit.

Excellent video Nate. Her discussion of theory is so important yet it's ignored so much. I tried bringing theory in to the discussion at Drumeo and I failed. The powers that be there couldn't wrap their head around the idea that theory isn't in the context of drumming but drumming is in the context of theory. Or better put, contextual to theory. Something as simple as the differences in playing to a major scale vs. a minor scale or playing exactly the same thing multiple different ways to create different voices was to esoteric or confrontational to them. There is so much realistic information in Anika's thoughts making this a special video. Thank you.

@@dnczardnczar they’re probably into it for pianote. It’s just that their target drum audience is mostly self taught folks who are afraid they need to know theory to start drums

Drumeo's focus graduates more and more towards beginners. This was different when I started being a member in 2017.

@@8020drummer Yes, I understood this which is why rather then pursue it I quit posting. At some point though if a drummer wants to advance they need to understand where the meter of the rhythm and melody diverges from meter or time signature of the drums. This was the topic I introduced at Drumeo. Go back to Schumann for example where he would use in 6/8 both dotted 8ths and duplets. They may mathematically play the same in Sibelius but they don't play the same when actually playing the music.

She's exactly as I expected. Chill but very sincere about the work, and the fun, once we get there after the work. Nice interview.
The note on theory was a little surprising. I love theory actually, the idea of something being tested has always intrigued me. And the fact that this can be done with sound rings the spirit of music on many levels. The process of writing isn't fun for me, but I never bored from reading and practicing rhythms for hours. From Stick Control to The Art of Bop Drumming to Portraits in Rhythm to Syncopation....yeah, I don't know, just love rhythm.
    Nah mean?

My Anika. Love love love her. And you hit the nail on the head; it's her blatently obvious work ethic. I said years ago, I love the way she thinks.

Of the interviews i have seen you do this has been my Favorite.... liked the focus on the mindset of playing. Everyone is just wherever there at with their abilities but the her point about hearing the tune is key.... I call it hearing the space, or your (my) place in it, if i am listening i am informed what to play or not play. Being Calm in this place with whatever chops you have or don't have is very important... the rest comes with time and trust if your working on it. Thanks very enjoyable you were able to get her to clearly explain her process. Enjoyable interview.

I wasn't aware that you were doing a podcast so this is the first one that I've seen. Nice job! You have an analytical mind and are really well suited to this. Anika was also an open book and a great interview.

I listen to me and I like it. The sound man is telling me the audience wants just 2 and 4 no fancy licks. I say ok because I heard the audience clap good and in the vid they were tapping their foot shaking the leg to time.
