Thank you. Those of if who watch a tutorial have not sewn before, or gotten a used machine with no instructions. I’m the latter. The camera work was perfect and you talked slow enough so that each instruction registered in the brain before you went to the next knob or dial. Most of the videos never explained what and where the the little black levers should be.
Thank you SO much! I messed up the tension on my mum's machine and she was SO MAD at me because it's not the first time, but that trick of the 5 stitches fixed it right up! I can now hem my skirts the way my mum hates it 😂
Awesome, Thank you for watching the video. I am always trying to help people. Lot's of my customers really appreciate having a sewing machine working like brand new machines.

Hello, Have you possibly made a video doing the Cleaning & Oiling you mention at the begining of this video? My wife recieved this machine for a wedding present back in '92... "She's never used it. Its been in its case since new. After seeing your video I'm interested in doing the Cleaning & Oiling you refering to before she attempts using it for some curtains she wants to attempt.
Found 1 of these on Street , last week ! Dirty , etc ……..! Not EXACT Model , but OLD ! Mine has 21 STITCHES and a DIAGRAM for Threading ! A master Tailor friend helped me clean & OIL IT ! She knows about SEVERAL Brands ! Me 😱🤯😭😫😩😳🥶 2 metal Thread guides are GONE ! But underneath Fabric THREAD IS ALL JUMBLED UP !
Just a quick question on the top of the machine to the right of where you wind the bobbin mine is missing where can I get that little part I have a singer Merit 4525 it looks kind of like a little lever
I need to reattach the tension knob assembly Someone took it completely off and can’t figure out how to assemble all the little pcs behind the knob Ty!
Thank you for this video, I have this sewing machine, it belonged to my mom. I cannot get it to form stitches, it looks like it is sewing but when I look closer at the stitch it’s just a line of thread being held down by loops of thread, Do you have any idea as to what I’m doing wrong?
There can be a lot of Things going wrong. 1st. clean the sewing machine bobbin and Feeddogs area, 2nd. check the needle for spurs, best thing make sure you have the needle is put in correctly, 3rd. Make sure you are Threading it correctly Feeddogs up and needle in the highest position. 4th. Make sure you reset the Tention. Try all this first. Then let me know if you get it to sew correctly.
www.singer.com/search/support click on the link get a free manual and it should show you how to oil this Sewing Machine. Have a Blessed day. Happy Sewing!
Hello jamiesoninteriors, i have the same question "how to oil singer Merritt 4538 sewing machine"? I have the original manual but the manual is generic, which does not show the details. I opened the outer cover. Now i see a metal cover with screws attached to it but the screws are so tight that even WD40 will not loosen it up. Without opening this inner metal cover, there is no way to oil this machine. If the creator of this video can show how to open the inner metal case, then i would be so obliged and thankful to her
After you straight stitch you can use a zigzag the 4th one over as an overlock stitch. If you have manual there should be instructions on how to set it up. Back in the day when most Sewing Machine didn't have all those stitches people would use a straight stitch first then a zigzag as an overlocking stitch.
I wish I could, but I don't own this Sewing machine. I work on sewing machines for my customers. After I make them a video the sewing machine go back with them.
i cannot get the feed dogs to work they dont have a button to move them up or down l finnily got them up but they will not move to sew material can you help me
Check the gears if you are missing teeth in a gear then it's broken. If the look good need to add sewing machine grease in the gears. Give a good cleaning will help too.
I need help! I have searched everywhere for how to reassemble the tensioner on this machine that I’ve had since I was a kid. I need to know how to mount the plastic pieces , main spring, and outside plastic knob with numbers. Can you possibly help me? I would be so grateful.
You need to find another Sewing machine just like it and transfer the part you are looking for. Because they don't make this part anymore. I had to do this with a kenmore sewing machine for a lady. I will go look tomorrow to see if I have anymore. But not likely because I sell parts so quickly.
@@JacquelineJaroffaith Hello! I have this machine and the tension also needs fixing on mine. I think I have all the parts (I've been using this machine forever), but now the tension knob isn't changing the tension. Can you help?
Hi What a great vid .. just bought one .. just to make socks for my fish tank .. :) Do you have a vid on the bobbin stuff ?… haven't got a clue … Stay safe
How do you oil? I took the part off to expose light area. But it has another piece attached that blocks getting to the moving parts. I looked up the manual. It is no help. TY
Hi, I just got gifted one of these to help make cloth masks for donations to healthcare workers. I cleaned it out and oiled it. Had a lot of trouble inserting the needle. The screw wouldn't grab it. Had to get a screw driver and screw it hard. After sewing a bunch of masks, needle has fallen out and again I can't get the screw to grab it tight enough to keep it in. Suggestions on what is wrong. It did sew a LOT of masks before falling out.
@@JacquelineJaroffaith It's a package of Singer brand size 14/90 needles. I took the needle clamp off and examined the inside. The only thing holding that needle in is the screw. Other than that it's a wide open shaft. Could there be a missing part? I finally got it to hold by adjusting the tiny screw holding the thread guide loop in (another video's suggestion) and even THEN I had to tighten the screw with a wrench WAY harder than I should have. The Singer needles were an old package from my mom, so probably about same age as machine.
@@JacquelineJaroffaith I did. Only way it fits is if I put a tiny piece of painters tape on the flat side of the needle. I've tried everything. I checked the manual and the needle is in correctly with the flat side back. I've tried multiple packages of Singer brand needles. My workaround is a piece of tape.
Sounds like it has a broken Gear on the bottom. I have a sewing machine here that needs a bottom gear. Most Sewing Machine made 1980's and up gears are made in plastic.
its really weird.. I have that same machine I bought back in the 1980s. It was my 2nd machine.I am kicking myself, however, as I had an older vintage machine that came with a table, but me being frugal and sensible traded that one in for this model.. I should have KEPT the table model!!. I don;'t know what model that one was.. but it would have been a nice addition. I do like my Merrit and it has served me well. The only thing WRONG with it is that it is YELLOW.. The Plastic is now this dingy yellow and I am trying to figure out the best way to bleach it cause it just looks gross.
Yes, it's the sun and air quality that turns them yellow. My grandma use to say, was if your not using it cover it. Keeps it looking like it's brand new. I think 🤔 the plastic just gets old causes it to change.
When you are sewing on your sewing machine leave the foot down on your fabric, needle in the highest position, then move your tension. Then sew if the fabric is sewing properly. Make sure you have the right needle on your the right fabric. I hope I answered your question. Have a Blessed Day.

What exact of needle I should buy? I broke the needle and I can't read the embossed number in the needle. Please reply asap. Thanks
You have to buy Singer needles the 2245 or 2200 Singer needles for the sewing machines.
@@JacquelineJaroffaith thanks a lot for the help. But may I know the difference of those numbers?
I usually stitch duchess, tulle fabrics.
Omg finally thank you!!!

Maybe you are using the wrong needles.
Singer Sewing Machines can only use Singer needles.

How do I raise the feed dogs?
In the back there is a lever to lift them up right behind the needle area.
How old is this machine? I just got one. Same model.

can anybody tell me how to change the foot on this machine?
Well, there is a screw at the foot you will need a screwdriver 🪛 to release the foot. Some have a little button behind the foot just push in.
