Investigation Puts Ancestry DNA Kits To The Test Among Sets Of Triplets

  • Millions of people are purchasing and using home DNA kits to determine their ancestry. Inside Edition enlisted the help of two sets triplets and a set of quadruplets to investigate the accuracy of the at-home tests. Their ancestry should be absolutely identical since they all came from the same egg. Unfortunately, the reveal confused and disappointed the sisters because of the varied results. The set of quadruplets were almost identical and did not have the variations seen in the triplets. #InsideEdition

    This is very easy to explain and is fully expected with these tests. The issue is that for $99, these companies do not check every individual gene on your DNA. They select a random handful and test only those. Then they match each gene that they tested to a database to tell where it came from. Now, knowing that, there will be different results for each person tested because the handful of random genes that they test will be different each time. Let's say you have a very distant ancestor that is Native American. There is only a small chance that that one gene that is of Native American ancestry will get selected to be tested. So in all likelihood, your results will come back with 0% Native American ancestry even though it's there. If you repeat the test several times on the same person, eventually that gene will get randomly selected and your results will show 1% Native American.
    This is what happened with the triplets. They have a lot of French and German DNA, but the random selection for each sister picked up a different amount of French and German genes.
    Same with the other triplets -- they have a very small amount of Scandinavian ancestry, but the random selection caused those Scandinavian genes to be missed in two of the sisters, but detected in the third.
    If you want 100% accurate repeatable results, then you can test every gene, but that will cost a lot more than $99.

      kkghost99 twins from the same zygote should be identical but in some cases, a mutation in the genetics can change things. Realistically it doesn't change their ancestry because they have inherited the exact same it's just that they have a genetic mutation.

      @allenjoseph1514 7 лет назад +14

      To evaluate a given confidence level, we would need more information, so your comparison to a coin toss is flawed. Secondly, very high confidence levels would probably greatly increase the cost of the tests. A 50% confidence level is reasonable for the purposes indicated and the extra costs for a high confidence level would be difficult to justify. (I don't think you understand how the term "confidence level" is used in statistics.)

    This is very misleading.
    1. Mother's and father's DNA does not pass down to all offspring in exactly the same ratios.
    2. The number you see in the test is the AVERAGE of numerous, numerous tests which often have a great range of percentages. That's why the average is what's presented to you and isn't always exactly the same.
