Investigation Puts Ancestry DNA Kits To The Test Among Sets Of Triplets

- Millions of people are purchasing and using home DNA kits to determine their ancestry. Inside Edition enlisted the help of two sets triplets and a set of quadruplets to investigate the accuracy of the at-home tests. Their ancestry should be absolutely identical since they all came from the same egg. Unfortunately, the reveal confused and disappointed the sisters because of the varied results. The set of quadruplets were almost identical and did not have the variations seen in the triplets. #InsideEdition
Instead of using triplets, use the same persons spit for different DNA tests. 🤦

@Elizendo then you get hit with "so you think my sister isnt goodlooking!?"

I would have liked to see them to have each set of girls send samples to every DNA company and compare the companies against each other...
Randy Rose probably too expensive for them though.
Brienne Rosnett These tests aren't expensive.
$100 each they said. That would cost a lot for a small news story.
Right! Maybe they aren't actually identical and now one company looks bad.
You don't even need identicals. Any other sibling with the same parents should have the same ancestry.

This would have been a more accurate investigation if each group took all of the tests and see what the difference is between brands.
what would that do? the differntt companies have different databases so they subject parts of the dna to what they have in their database so it would be different but in a sense very close still
Having those three blondes in their identical, tight outfits is kind of the most important part of the piece though, wouldn't you agree?
They were in playboy, no outfits at all lol
I thought the same thing. This is a flawed investigation since they changed what should have been constant variables. If they're looking for which is most accurate, then the test subjects must stay the same since they're the constant variable.
You’re looking for a scientifically accurate precise result from *INSIDE EDITION*?
The crazy thing is that after taking the test your DNA gets put into a national probably even world wide data base where law enforcement including the FBI and other organizations can access your info. In some cases it can be a really good thing but just not knowing who is getting that access is very scary

Not everyone has the same exact dna, even if you’re a twin.
Although everyone has a different DNA, if you come from the same parents then you would have the same ancestors.

Well this makes me want to take the tube and collect some of my dogs drool and see if they say she is french
This is very easy to explain and is fully expected with these tests. The issue is that for $99, these companies do not check every individual gene on your DNA. They select a random handful and test only those. Then they match each gene that they tested to a database to tell where it came from. Now, knowing that, there will be different results for each person tested because the handful of random genes that they test will be different each time. Let's say you have a very distant ancestor that is Native American. There is only a small chance that that one gene that is of Native American ancestry will get selected to be tested. So in all likelihood, your results will come back with 0% Native American ancestry even though it's there. If you repeat the test several times on the same person, eventually that gene will get randomly selected and your results will show 1% Native American.
This is what happened with the triplets. They have a lot of French and German DNA, but the random selection for each sister picked up a different amount of French and German genes.
Same with the other triplets -- they have a very small amount of Scandinavian ancestry, but the random selection caused those Scandinavian genes to be missed in two of the sisters, but detected in the third.
If you want 100% accurate repeatable results, then you can test every gene, but that will cost a lot more than $99.
@Shaun The Good Doctor but long!

Well if kids get 50/50 from mom and dad. Then going down the line will get smaller and smaller.
Kids including twins can inherit different things from parents gene wise.
You can't 100% say that EVERY single feature, blood group, dna from distant distant relatives from hundreds of years ago will all go down the line equally.
identical twins have the same dna ie the same exact ancestors
kkghost99 twins from the same zygote should be identical but in some cases, a mutation in the genetics can change things. Realistically it doesn't change their ancestry because they have inherited the exact same it's just that they have a genetic mutation.
A Homozygous twin is from the same egg that divides...so identical DNA

Alpha0727 That's genetics for you. That's literally what happens when your made...
For the Alliance
nope, it isn't - the 50 percent only go for "Male" or "female", but everything after that can and has higher percentages, depending on your ancestry.
What does ancestry bring, other than DNA ?
Shows, that this is definetly nothing you would understand
To evaluate a given confidence level, we would need more information, so your comparison to a coin toss is flawed. Secondly, very high confidence levels would probably greatly increase the cost of the tests. A 50% confidence level is reasonable for the purposes indicated and the extra costs for a high confidence level would be difficult to justify. (I don't think you understand how the term "confidence level" is used in statistics.)
This is very misleading.
1. Mother's and father's DNA does not pass down to all offspring in exactly the same ratios.
2. The number you see in the test is the AVERAGE of numerous, numerous tests which often have a great range of percentages. That's why the average is what's presented to you and isn't always exactly the same.
Stardecki I was just about to comment about this
I know they got caught selling the data to third parties . no one seems to care. also , it can be used as proof in what is called familial dna in court if one of your relatives commits a crime.

Moral of the story: buy the kits that had the most identical results
I don’t think people actually know how DNA works cus just because your twins does not mean it’s going to be the same cus your dna is going to disrupt into them and it would be almost impossible to have to exact dna as another person twin or not
but if theyre identical they come from the same zygote, no? their dna should be the same. it’d be different if they were fraternal, however

I’m from New Jersey and I never heard of them
Why did the biracial quadruplets show a more broad result such as only European and West African? It did not say which part of Europe like the other twins results said, and it did not say which part West Africa. That was odd.
It's just poorly edited/compiled. Their results were just as in-depth as the others, the producers just didn't feature it (probably due to time constraints) .
The story was about the inconsistencies in the DNA tests, they featured very little from the tests that were consistent.
They used AncestryDNA which doesn't give you a very broad breakdown of where exactly, unlike maybe 23andMe
You have it backwards, the quadruplets used 23andme, and Ancestry has more regions.
Trevie3 The quads and the last set of triplets all used Ancestry. The "doctors triplets" used 23 and me and the american idol triplets used family tree.

And you're exactly right to assume that because DNA is not a foolproof method in forensic science. DNA has convicted so many innocent people just saying.
