"Was colon meant to be sexy because I feel like she wasn't but she is." In Akibaranger (a comedic/satirical Sentai aimed at adults made around the time of Gokaiger), its Red Ranger specifically cites Colon as one of the reasons for his robot girl fetish.
I feel like the shallow nature of Black Bison and Green Sai might’ve been because Toei was still developing the concept that would become the Sixth Ranger, which actually had its genesis all the way back in Bioman (An episode is literally titled “The Sixth Man”). It’s actually really fun going through Super Sentai in a more chronological order just to see how concepts so deeply familiar to us in Power Rangers came into existence in the source material.
Hi Pomelo Retro. I thought I'd let you know that the language that Professor Dorothee is speaking is actually French. Infact, Dorothee is actually a French TV presenter and I think also pop singer, and presented a children's TV show similar to SMTV Live called "Club Dorothee", and Dorothee appeared in Liveman as a guest. Furthermore, Super Sentai was popular in France before Power Rangers was brought over there. Bioman was the first Sentai to be brought over to France, and Maskman was the second and was named "Bioman 2: Maskman" while Liveman was the 3rd and was called "Bioman 3: Liveman". Other Sentai shows (namely Flashman, TurboRanger, Fiveman and Jetman) brought to France under their original names.
Being French, I confirm what Sushi Sunshine 2000 said. Dorothée was an incredibly popular TV presenter on French television. When episode 30 was broadcast in 1990 with the surprise appearance of Doctor Dorothée, all the French children screamed in front of their TVs, and we talked about it for a long time at school. It was amazing to see her appear alongside "Bioman".
Oh and, I'd like to add I'm not French, and I have not lived in France... I'm actually British and I'm a keen fan of Super Sentai and many other Japanese TV shows, movies and other media... And I'm also interested by the showcasing of these Japanese shows outside of Japan, including France. France is just underneath Britain, and being British I sometimes feel a bit jealous of France because they have Sentai and we didn't. I would have loved to have watched Bioman or something similar on Wacaday as a 4 year old. Can you imagine Timmy Mallett and Michaela Strachen introducing the show and going "BIOMAN, GO BIOMIC!!!" in a similar way to how they went "TRANSFORMERS TRANSFORM!!!" or "GOBOTS GO BOTTY!!!"? Maybe it would also be fun to have Rick Astley do a cover version of "Biomic Soldier". As far as original Japanese Tokusatsu goes, Britain had the American dub of "Giant Robo" known as "Johnny Sokko and his Flying Robot" broadcast of "The Power Station" which was a music channel similar to MTV... We also had "Monkey" and we also had "Star Fleet", which was an English dub of "X Bomber", which was puppet show similar to Thunderbirds.
For those who didn't know, Professor Bias is played by Jouji Nakata. Anime fans will know him as Alucard from Hellsing and Hellsing Ultimate. Gokaiger fans will also recognize him as Zaien from the Liveman tribute episode as a neat callback. :D
While I too gripe about Liveman's lack of character focus of the heroes. (I often joke that I'm *still* waiting for a proper Megumi episode and not a dual focus where she just gets to shoot the MOTW in the end.) I feel like Toei was partially banking on their celebrity status because Red Falcon and Blue Dolphin were semi-popular singers at the time, with Red Falcon even performing the opening and ending to the show and the both of them having insert songs (this is why they wrote a song for Megumi to just randomly sing at the beach in one episode, because real life singer). And thus, Jou became my favorite of the three because, from what I can tell, his actor was just a nobody at the time.
I see you know about the Liveman episode in Gokaiger. It should be noted that Red Falcon shows up before that in Gaoranger vs. Super Sentai to teach that series' avian themed swordsman a thing or two.
And also again in Zyuohger VS Ninninger for a quick, voice only, "hey it's the 40th anniversary" cameo. Giving us Liveman returns in three post-Liveman anniversaries.
Colon was pretty popular. She's one of the few non ranger characters that had merchandise. I felt like Megumi was the best fleshed out of the liveman, she still had holes but at the same time it felt like and abnormal number of episodes focused on her. The female ranger getting more than like 2 episodes of focus was different for the time.
RE: the animals, right before the first morph sequence in the very first episode, Red Falcon does say they're the warriors who will protect all living things, so I think the ending stuff was a callback to that. I feel like the overall theme of the season is that it all life is valuable (like when Green Sai gives birth to a monster), not just the smart or powerful life forms, which is Volt's philosophy. And on that note, I've always thought the 1000-point brain meant their IQ became reached 1000 points, so that would be why they were all so keen to get there, since Volt basically revolves around being the smartest ever. I agree Liveman's a bit overrated by the fandom. There are better seasons with more focused storylines. It would have been way better if they developed Bias and the Livemen more, and maybe if they had something not quite as goofy as talking brains as the end plot since it was supposed to be all scientific. The suits are awesome though, and the mechas were genre-defining, so I can see why people overlook its flaws, but they do exist.
Great job as always! This channel should be way more popular than it is. You can tell the effort you put into it. Thanks for the great entertainment. I’m not gonna speak for everyone but I can guess we all appreciate you and the hard work you do!
25:45 I think it has more to do with that Obler chose to be a monster, which would be seen as more powerful than humans, so when he is returned to his human state, he is mocked for it. Likewise, he mocked the other two because they decided to keep their human forms because he saw himself as more powerful than them because of his monster form
Re 26:10 - I have a long-running theory that there is a writing department at Toei that builds the lore and worldbuilding for each season, and a design department at Bandai that designs what all the toys are going to look like... and these two departments are only able to communicate via a pair of tin cans on a string. And the string is buried in a gravel quarry. And then the poor showrunner has to pick up the pieces and try to build something coherent. Toei: OK, we're working on this show with a bunch of scientists working on a space project, any ideas for suit themes? Bandai: Oh, easy. Falcon, lion, and dolphin. Done. T: OK... I guess we can work with that. Well, we have this other series, where everything is prehistoric-animal themed, we already have suits and mechs, we just need a transformation trinket. B: Definitely a belt buckle. T: Well what about this other series about a mystical tribe living in the forest, using magic from their connection to the Earth? B: Animals from space! T: ... Y'know, let's leave Sentai for a moment and talk about Kamen Rider, we have this series about confronting your inner demons, reifying all the darkest impulses from the depths of your mind. Got a toy theme for that one? B: Stamps. T: Stamps? B: Y'know, like iMessage stickers. Kids love those things. T: Ugh. OK, last one, we have a show about a bunch of dance troupes fighting for access to performance stages, as an allegory for the Sengoku Jidai. Thoughts? B: Oh, definitely fruit. T: Fruit?! B: The upgraded belt will have a juicer right in the buckle. T: I quit.
Thanks for posting/creating content still dude! As always, absolutely love all your pr/Sentai (and wrestling) content. IMHO we all still NEED a vr troopers/beetleborgs/masked rider set of reviews from your point of view Matt.
(Update) I’ve been watching the series a lot lately and I finally got to Time Force (hyped because everyone praises the show and I wanted to see how good it is). Until then, I can’t wait to see your Light Speed Rescue vs Kyuukyuu Sentai.
Just a little note, the fandom usually call the seasons by it's last name (in this case GoGoV) since saying [Something] Sentai is kind of a mouth full.
Choujuu Sentai Liveman (Super Beast Task Force Liveman). Is the twelfth entry of Toei Company's Super Sentai metaseries. The last Super Sentai title of the Shōwa Era- when the beginning of Heisei era. Academia Island is an elite school that various genius students from across the globe attend. Among them are Amamiya Yuusuke, Ohara Jou and Misaki Megumi who with Yano Takuji and Aikawa Mari sought to create a suit strong enough for space exploration. However, three of their classmates and friends Tsukigata Kenji , Senda Rui, and Omura Go felt their talents were being wasted and leave to join an evil organization called Volt who offers to raise their full scientific potential. As a result, when Yusuke and allies saw them leaving, Kenji draws a gun on the three with Takuji and Mari taking the fatal blow. Soon after, one of the professors at the school Professor Hoshi pitches in to help Yusuke and his friends complete the suits so they can serve to prepare against Volt. And then in 1988, the present day, with Kenji, Rui, and Go now known as Doctors Kemp, Mazenda and Obular, Volt begins its attack by devastating Academia Island. As a result, Yusuke, Jou, and Megumi take up the suits they created and become the Liveman team to battle against their former classmates and evil forces of Volt. Though they managed to get Go to leave Volt, the organization recruits new members in Doctor Ashura and the aliens Guildos and Butchy. Soon after, the Liveman team are joined by Tetsuya and Junichi, the respective younger brothers of Takuji and Mari, while learning that there is a darker agenda behind Volt that only its leader Bias knows. Liveman: Red Falcon - Amamiya Yuusuke is A poor student at Academia, but a strong leader and quick at thinking under pressure. He is a brave hard worker and enjoys rock music and work outs. Yellow Lion - Ohara Jou is at the bottom of the class at Academia and a sportsman and skateboarder. He is short-tempered and ready to dive into danger. Joh has the strength to back up his actions. Blue Dolphin - Misaki Megumi is top class student at Academia who was nonetheless friends with Yusuke and Joh and did powered suit research with them and the late Takuji Yano and Mari Aikawa. She is good at swimming and bicycling and was taught archery by her father. Black Bison - Yano Tetsuya is The younger brother of Takuji and elder brother of Takeshi. He is good at boxing. He nearly destroyed the Gran Tortoise after being taken over by Volt. Green Sai - Aikawa Junichi is The younger brother of Mari and a rugby player. He calls Tetsuya "Tetsu-chan", looking up to him as an older brother. The youngest member of the team, temporarily leaving high school in order to fight Volt. Allies: Doctor Hoshi, Colon and Doctor Dorothy. Later Takuji and Mari will become ally. The mecha of Live Robo, The primary robot of the Liveman team formed when the command "Combine! Live Dimension!" composed of Jet Falcon, Land Lion and Aqua Dolphin into 3 in 1 combine main mecha. Choujuuken (Hyper Beast Sword) that is used for slaying monster unleashing Super Live Crash. I would recommend that to watch this series is epic after Hikari Sentai Maskman and before Kousoku Sentai Turboranger!
I think people in America didn’t realize is that the school system in Japan especially in the 1980s was very different then here in the states and a lot of the students were pushed to succeed even to the point of mental breakdowns
Actually that biasu theory Actually might work, the majority of sentai prior to this season all had a scientist General or main villain. Who knows those might be the brains of previous sentai villains...damn that would have been a cool plot point to explore
One of my most favorite sentai. That was the second sentai I discovered. I was very young and my parents bought me a VHS on dicount. The first one was jetman when I was 4 years old, it aired on the club Dorothée.
Would love to see more older Sentai series reviews like this. Showa era Sentai, or at least Showa era tokusatsu stuff in general, are always interesting to me, and fun too.
I like how the villains were former classmates of the heros and how Dolphin Blue's theme song was used in Butchy episodes. Dr. Kemp's human for where he had the blonde streak in his hair reminds me of Dreadkok Thrasher from GI Joe.
Another Sentai review? Sweet. Sorry you didn't enjoy Liveman as much as it was hyped. Any chance you'll do the comparison between Lightspeed Rescue and GoGo V next?
If I would rate this series, it would be around 8.2/10. Would've been 9/10 if it weren't for the lack of explanation of the 1000 point brain and the lack of impact of both Black Bison and Sai Green. For next review, I would recommend Flashman or Changeman, both are highly rated from what I have seen. As for myself, Flashman is pretty good overall meanwhile Changeman imo has one of the best antagonist line ups but a pretty boring protagonists.
Hey, French guy here, the scientist is French children's TV host, named Dorothée, she guest stars as her hugely popular show made sentai and animé popular in France, wayyy before the Power Rangers, in the 70s through the 90s. My first ever sentai happens to be Liveman (Bioman in France).
The music to Liveman is so awesome. It's a good show, though it's about average compared to other Sentai series. It was the first Showa era series I ever saw, so it goes have a special place in my heart. I do think the green and black rangers were unnecessary and brought the show down a peg. The worst episode for me is the one where green is pregnant. Aa for your complaints about the show being episodic, that's how Sentai was in a nutshell until Jetman. Flashman is probably the sole exception as it did feel more complex compared to those that came out in the 80s. I recommend doing that one next. Good review. 🙂
Hi ! The scientist bringing a new battery for the robots coming out of nowhere when Bison Liner appears is Dorothée! No wonder you don't know her, cause she was a famous french TV speaker, as well as a singer and former actress. We could see a lot of super sentai and metal heroes series during her shows in France, including Liveman. She also made cameos in Kamen Rider Black and Jiraya, two other Toei series which were prodouced at the same moment in 1988, even though we never had Kamen Rider Black in France. She went on a small trip to Japan for the occasion as people at Toei wanted to meet her, as she was contributing to tokusatsu popularity and japanese animation on french television at that time through her show. She shot her scenes in french but she was dubbed for the japanese audience. And she re-dubbed herself later on french television. She had several shows but the most famous was "Le Club Dorothée", running from 1987 to 1997.But she stopped making TV right after the end of her show, though she had a tremendous succes and an enormous fanbase. We had several super sentai seasons from Bioman to Jetman and later the first seasons from Power Rangers. I hope it helped you to solve this mystery!
11:19 CRAAAAAZY!! The doctor's name, for Us, is Dorothee! She used to host a TV Show called conveniently "Club Dorothee" in France, who were showing all the anime/tokusatsu series in the late 80s/Early 90s. Brooo I'm so shook to see Her in here, so cool! 🤩
The thing i always found an odd coincidence, was that the same color, land sea air animal gimmick, and who it was assigned too was used for Hurricaneger years later with the lion, bird and dolphin.
Hey I just wanted to say I really enjoy your super sentai (even though I never watched it) and Power Rangers (that I have seen all seasons multiple times) content (and other stuff like TMNT). The comparisons in particular are very interesting for me that I have never watched sentai.
I think next you should review one of the more recent Sentais, such as Gokaiger, Kyuranger or Donbrother (though that's not complete yet, so I'd say wait for it to be over) to see how they stack up with the 80s, 90s and 2000s entries.
7:26 Rui doesn't use sama in her name... The word "Sama" is a Japanese honorific and means "Mr"/"Mrs" so Yuusuke is actually calling her Mrs Rui Senda. But I understand Matt. I'm British as well so I had trouble knowing what it was as well when I first started getting into Sentai.
Don't go before Liveman if you are looking for the modern recipe for Sentai. It's all just learning to get to the point Liveman is at. Liveman is the start of the "modern" story beats.
Hey I'm loving your reviews 🔥🔥🔥 whenever you have the time, check out gokaiger! It's one of my favorite senti series! That's the equivalent of that trash called supermega force but the story is WAY BETTER
Would you consider watching Kamen Rider or Garo? Perhaps a comparison between Kamen Rider Ryuki (JP) and Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight (US version) Some Kamen Rider from 2000-10s is really good for adults
I've just downloaded it. However I need to know whether I need the previous season for context and then do two seasons of Power Rangers in one go. In which case - that'd be a big one.
Please stop constantly apologizing for potentially pronouncing things wrong. It's kinda distracting and let's face it no one really cares about it that much, no offense. IMO mentioning it once at the start of the video is perfectly enough. Otherwise - great job. Once again, all these shows sound incredibly peculiar on paper and look great design and effects-wise, but watching them is a total chore. With all the artificial characters, their overacting, constant yelling and motivations that are just spat out. That is - thanks again for letting me experience the show without going through the pain of watching it.
I've actually seen videos where the comments are almost nothing but people griping about the pronunciations. Half the time, it's people being completely unaware of regional accents. If he didn't say something, yes, people would say something. Angry Video Game Nerd did an entire video about people griping about how he says things.
@@almightycinder Exactly. I can never tell which way it's going to go - half the time people are very understanding and tell you it doesn't matter, the other half there's real anger. As long as people enjoy the video.

A true classic of the Pre PR Sentai era. Really was the first to lock in on the big, prominent animal motifs, especially in the mecha.
Hello sun Vulcan came out first and that had a animal motif
@@MsSaskue360 but actually they're called "solar squadron" animal is just a plus to the series.
I like how the villains were former classmates of the heros and how Dolphin Blue's theme song was used in Butchy episodes. Dr. Kemp's human for where he had the blonde streak in his hair reminds me of Dreadkok Thrasher from GI Joe.
Thanks and safety to ya as always mate!!
Another Sentai review? Sweet. Sorry you didn't enjoy Liveman as much as it was hyped. Any chance you'll do the comparison between Lightspeed Rescue and GoGo V next?
I enjoyed it - just less so than I would have done if I was watching it as a child in the 80s as its very episodic.
@@PomeloRetro I know you enjoyed it, hence why I said "as much as it was hyped."
I'm loving these videos thank you for all your hard work
Nice job on reviewing an Older Sentai like Liveman.
Great review if you plan to check out more pre zyuranger series I definitely recommend Flashman and Denziman next.
Maskman has also been recommended.
Great review! Do a review for Chngeman and Flashman next! I think you will like these ones.
If Flashman didn't exist this would be my favorite from the 80s.
Nice. Thank you.
Always look forward to these, Fish!
Please would you be able to do Flashman next ? Love you’re Sentai vids btw dude
Thank you for the info.
That was my youth. Club Dorothée brought Sentai and Anime to France and french speaking Belgium.
This comes out on my birthday.
Thanks Pomelo
I love this so much. Favorite showa era sentai
Good luck with changeman and it's 55 episodes.
That one is on the list.
Despite its issues I love liveman a lot
Omg I have perfect timing, I just sat down to see if you had uploaded a new super sentai video 🎉
I’m guessing that the fiveman review is next, considering that’s the next DVD.
@@romzef Thanks for letting me know.
Fun fact the last two rangers were add by the toy executives because the toy sales were somewhat poor
Wrong timestamp?
@@midnightstrove6784 Thanks a lot! I was watching live but maybe with a little delay 😂 I corrected it
A nice Easter Egg that I wasn't aware of.
@@PomeloRetro No Prob Brother! It brought so much memories to see her, and this thanks to your Video! Thanks a lot 😁🤞🏾
Wow it’s the one that was used as a basis of super quantum beast king great Magnus!!
I actually watched this dubbed to Spanish, the intro theme is sang by a fellow Uruguayan even, but the dub itself is hilairus.
Hey you forgot to do comparison videos of The Super Sentai of light speed rescue, time force, wild Force, and ninja storm before you did Dino thunder.
Liveman is one of my favourite Sentai series from the 80’s
Did you watch Dino Fury and Beast Morphers
Acha thik hai
Toh Mai kya karu
The thing i always found an odd coincidence, was that the same color, land sea air animal gimmick, and who it was assigned too was used for Hurricaneger years later with the lion, bird and dolphin.
I noticed it when I was younger too then tried to figure out Green Sai and Black Bison's resemblance to the Thunder Rangers
Hey I just wanted to say I really enjoy your super sentai (even though I never watched it) and Power Rangers (that I have seen all seasons multiple times) content (and other stuff like TMNT). The comparisons in particular are very interesting for me that I have never watched sentai.
can't wait 'til you do kyuryuger
I think next you should review one of the more recent Sentais, such as Gokaiger, Kyuranger or Donbrother (though that's not complete yet, so I'd say wait for it to be over) to see how they stack up with the 80s, 90s and 2000s entries.
Cool
The brain in a jar theory is interesting concerning Sentai's don't do contuity that much.
Whahoooooooo can't wait
I love livemen
lets go sentai only episode!!!
Great review
Could you do Jungle Fury VS Gekiranger down the road?
Just watched the video and enjoyed it and I was thinking maybe for your next video you could do a more modern sentai, like, Uchu Sentai Kyuranger.
And now I know.
@@PomeloRetro And knowing is only half the battle
I love Colon 😘
As you should
Only those who have never seen Liveman don't :)
the main three Liveman's animals and colours of the animals are the same as in Ninja Storm
Belated Happy New Year, Pomelo. Nice one. Can you do Maskman?
I'm writing Maskman now.
Me: Mom, can we get Baraka?
Mom: No, we have Baraka at home.
Baraka at home: 5:30
good video
I wonder if the sentai that Ninja Storm is based off of took the zord idea.
It came 2 years BEFIRE Zyuranger!
Ok I need to know where you got that shirt with the Nintendo controllers. Great video otherwise but got distracted looking for the shirt online.
I wish I knew - it was a birthday present
Sai is Rhino just in Japanese
Don't go before Liveman if you are looking for the modern recipe for Sentai. It's all just learning to get to the point Liveman is at. Liveman is the start of the "modern" story beats.
Hey I'm loving your reviews 🔥🔥🔥 whenever you have the time, check out gokaiger! It's one of my favorite senti series! That's the equivalent of that trash called supermega force but the story is WAY BETTER
I missed the Liveman op at the end of the video 😥
I just called him emperor bias.
Don’t worry, I have the same problem with Ultramans/Ultramen.
Do MASKMAN
If you compare the two, this series has a bit in common with Hurricanger. Same color palette as Go-Onger.
It’s been 2 months since you announced
I don’t know why it is that Toku stuff in general just accidentally makes sense and is accidentally canon. Power Rangers started this, by the way.
What is the lore on change man sentai.
Would you consider watching Kamen Rider or Garo? Perhaps a comparison between Kamen Rider Ryuki (JP) and Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight (US version)
Some Kamen Rider from 2000-10s is really good for adults
Potentially, yes
ruclips.net/video/lkQlIYs07j4/видео.html
sooo MagiRanger vs Mystic Force when!!?
Couldn't say - but I'm aware you've been asking for it for a while.
@@PomeloRetro hehe srry to pester you but is a video I'm really excited for....
Do you have a video adout Power rangers Ninja strom and their super sentai version?
Not yet
When is the next video
Can you please do fiveman or maskman next
I've already done Jetman.
Maskman is coming.
Liveman
(2 potential rangers die in the first episode)
I dare you to do Battle Fever J
so sad to gear jdf is gone
Gokaiger one of these days??! 😳
I've just downloaded it. However I need to know whether I need the previous season for context and then do two seasons of Power Rangers in one go. In which case - that'd be a big one.
@@PomeloRetro Previous season as in just Goseiger?
@@sodokami6347 Yes. And then Mega Force/Super Mega Force. All in one.
@@PomeloRetro Wow, that’s gonna be a fairly long video to make. Definitely excited for the video.
Exactly. It would be massive, so I'm not sure when I'd be able to make it. But I'll be watching Gokaiger soon to see.
Operation Overdrive
Mystic Force
Never liked that LiveDolphin, it looks like conjoined twin dolphins or something.
Who did i mist this
Please stop constantly apologizing for potentially pronouncing things wrong.
Fair enough
I switch between videos. Sometimes I'm apologetic, sometimes I tell people where to go.
Yeah, just go for it, or if you're really not sure, just have the word/name show up the first time you say it!
When is the next video
