- Back when we started this series, we took a look at the difference between Power Rangers and its Japanese counterpart. But without understanding how deep the rabbit hole goes - we only really covered some of the basics. As such, it’s about time we went back to the beginning and ask the question - Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers vs Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger - what’s the difference?

Regarding the Zordon not actually being in the tube thing, I always just saw it as being his physical link to the world, his anchor so to speak. That's why Andros destroying the tube killed him, because it severed that link. I'm probably wrong, but it made sense to me at the time heh
I'm with you on that, I always thought of the tube being like a TV tuned into the time warp to capture the picture of Zordon, but that doesn't explain why his essenence would spread across the galaxy by breaking the tube.
The thing about Thuy as the Yellow Ranger is that the "We didn't realize it until we were (however far in)!" makes a lot of sense because we KNOW and SAW that Thuy wasn't the first choice for Trini, and that the character wasn't always Asian. Thuy was probably rushed in as a last-minute replacement and absent-mindedly in that regard went on filming
I think it's pretty dumb to think Trini being the yellow Ranger is some how racist. Same with Zack. Should no Asian person ever be a yellow ranger ever again? Should no Black person ever be cast as a black ranger? What if they do an all Black cast? Should they just not have a black ranger? Are all Super Sentai yellow rangers automatically racist?
@@WiGgYof09 odds are that anyone who calls this dumb crap racist are folks that don't even know that Power Rangers is an adaptation of a Japanese series in the first place.
@@WiGgYof09 I agree. Look at Tommy, he was a white guy and got cast as the white ranger, but no one complains about that being racist, because there’s no problem with it. The same should be true for Zack and Trini.

@@WiGgYof09 it's not that it's racist it's just hilarious that they both happened to be the black and yellow ranger at the same time.
I heard they lost the prop morphers so often that the crew often had to run out to the nearest Toys' R' Us to buy the toys to use. That would explain the changes in appearance. Looks like in that first shot, they forgot to put the black stickers on.

The first season of MMPR used the Japanese version of the toy morphers/Dynobucklers as props. They were sold with the black bolt stickers included on a sheet, not pre-applied. The prop master made “power” and “rangers” stickers to cover the “Kyoryusentai” and “zyuranger” stickers. They just never bothered to apply the black bolt stickers (season 2 and 3 had the black bolts). The American toy had inaccurate stickers “mighty morphin” and “power rangers” and had the black bolts pre-applied.
So I think Rita was in the space dumpster because when she went out for space groceries, her bread was moldy, and she had to throw it away. But when she went to do so, the dumpster lid closed on top of her.
Ah yes! MMPR was the series that started it all and helped introduce me to the world of Super Sentai which I continue to love today.

The early episodes of MMPR are interesting on rewatch as you see the teething difficulites of the show as they experiment with how much Japanese footage they can get away with
Excellent rundown and comparison, and I'm glad you posted it up on my birthday (unknowingly, of course!). Two actors from Zyuranger were also on the previous series, Jetman. First off, Dan, the Blue Ranger, played one of the Back Dimension Warriors that brought the Garuda ship to the Jetmen (the character also named Dan). The other was Kai, whose actor played villain Tran in Jetman.
Also, I love Bandora's dance parties
Actually Geki was also on there as a leader of a group that tried to replace the jetman.
32:10 You hear Puripurikan because thats exactly what is been said, Every time you won't be sure of the name in japanese it is just check the Katakana table, the largest amount of Character Names are written in katakana and its very easy to understand
What I'd give to see the looks on the faces of the creators of Zyuranger if you went back in time and told them what impact it would have on children's media in the west 😊

you are spot on with the music. Ron Wasserman is a blessing. His music elevates the series 10 fold. i would not be able to watch MMPR without his work. You should definitely try to interview him, he seems really open to it in general. great video as always. I did not start with MMPR nor is it my favorite but it still holds a special place in my heart and in the hearts of millions. I'm not a fan of Super Sentai but I love seeing where the OG footage is taken from and learning about it and how it was changed and adapted. Seriously though, that music is amazing. I fucking love Fight, I Will Win, 5-4-1, Combat, We need a Hero and Hope for the World. (i know its turbo but it has the OG feel) ANd i love that he came back for SPD.

I grew up with this show. I was 8 when it debuted and thought for a bit it was related to Transformers which at the time my older brother had been into. In fact I remember they showed commercials for the toys and never put it together it was for a show until I was at my grandmothers and the first show came on and I was hooked. Years late I realized it came from another show from Japan but only recently did I bother to look up the show on RUclips. I probably would have done it sooner but I knew it wouldn’t have been on there in the early days or RUclips. I was a bit surprised that the original show was much darker and yet made more sense than what MMPR did but I was a kid back then so I didn’t care. Excellent video sir.

That's why I think Jetman should've been the first season, it was more high tech, so it would've fit better. If Top Gun had been the big movie that year instead of Jurassic Park, maybe they would've done it.
@@michaelleary9233 eh, hard to say. zyuranger wasnt haim saban's first attempt at an american adaptation. i... think he tried changeman in the late 80s or so, only a few episodes saw circulation. and from what i hear, absolutely dreadful from both a production standpoint and as something viewable for the masses.

I recently went through kakuranger, and I thought it was amazing. Especially the jump in consequence and tensions in episode 23 and beyond. I can’t wait to see your revised thoughts
It's interesting that Zyuranger made an effort to disguise the toylike nature of the dinobucklers. From what I've seen from more modern seasons of Super Sentai (and what I've seen from Kamen Rider clips) they're not as shy about them being toy commercials for mass-produced plastic rayguns and morphers and whatever else. It seems the further into the new century SS/PR goes, the more shameless it becomes about being a giant advertisement for playthings. You touched on this in your Dino Thunder video, with how every other episode introduced a new zord/mecha. DT and Abaranger are tame in this regard compared to what I've seen of Kyuuranger or Gokaiger.
It's always has been about selling toys and nothing more, you're just blinded by nostalgia
@@marvelousball Never said it wasn't about selling toys. I'm saying that the props look like they've come straight off the toy shelf at Five Below whereas they never used to. They used to have actual props then make the toys cheaper imitations of them. Maybe it's because today's cameras are higher def so they pick up on them looking toyish more.
Thuy Trang's Trini Kwan is my favorite Ranger of all time. I often wonder if the original actress, Audri Dubois, had stayed with the show, would she have had as much of an impact on me, and would I still be connected to Power Rangers as I am now? I don't think I would be.
Trang's performance has an undercurrent of gentle persuasion (which you could say is personified by her Martial Arts). She has an opinion, the will to back it up, and she'll do it through changing your mind though explanation. While Billy is the genius of the group, Trini is always shown to be on his level. I could see Trang's version of Trini being involved in Speech and Debate. Where Billy excells in Science, I imagine Trang's version of Trini excelling in History, Social Studies, and Language Arts.
Audri Dubois' Trini I felt was more direct - I could see Dubois' Trini kneeing Ivan Ooze in the nuts like Aisha did more than I could Trang's Trini.

I got power rangers season 1 to season 3 box set started rewatching it . I can't believe it be 30 years old since it the power rangers started.
I think the significance of the eclipse weakening Dai Zyu Jin is that many cultures view eclipsed as malefic, like how some cultures view an eclipse as the severed head of a demon attempting to eat the sun and it coming out of the demon's neck.
Billy was my favorite ranger ... until the introduction of Tommy. Having been psychologically abused as a child, I keyed in on Tommy being used by evil and breaking away from that to become a hero. It was very inspirational, to my early-teen mind.
Zordon makes a lot more sense as a character if you just think of him as a big Rocky Horror fan.
While the first season of MMPR was still figuring out what to do with the franchise, I actually consider a step up above Zyuranger by virtue of it actually keeping the Power Rangers in the spotlight. Zyuranger tended to mostly focus on a guest character of the week, typically a kid, rather than the titular heroes.
There is nothing inherently wrong with having a series that uses your main character as a supporting protagonist, look at the 90s Batman cartoon for an example of how you do that right since we had a great supporting cast and memorable villains who could easily care the story on their own, along with a lot of great one shot characters. The problem is that Zyuranger is a team based series so leaving the heroes out of the spotlight so often leaves the team underdeveloped. The main thing that kept me entertained in a lot of episodes were the villains, Bandora is a treat to watch with how over the top she is and her silly antics, ontop of having moments she is genuinely threatening.
I'm honestly disappointed to learn that in the episode where the pig monster was sent down, Power Rangers cut a hilarious moment Bandora tries to throw her to wand to enlarge the monster but collapses because she lacks the strength to staff her wand. That does show a difference between Power Rangers and Super Sentai by this point, Sentai had been around long enough to indulge in self parody.
That would sadly not be the last time Power Rangers cut the self parody. There was a moment in Operation Overdrive where the explosion that occurs after the rangers' introduction causes the Red Ranger to catch on fire.

even though power rangers was my childhood i have always prefered zyranger and its soundtrack plus its story although i cant really blame people for prefering PR soundtrack as yea its really memorable

3:25 that's one thing I think the 2017 movie got right. Instead of having zordon choose the rangers the coins chose the rangers. It's very hard to come up with a logical reason this wise ancient alien sage who's 10s of thousands of years old would chose teenagers to fight a evil space witch and her alien army. You can't come up with a logical reason for it because it's illogical. So having the coins choose the rangers instead of zordon is something I hope they keep in reboot.
Zyuranger was not the first first Sentai show to get a US adaptation, that was Dynaman in the late 1980s. It was a parody dub (think MXC or Woody Allen’s What’s Up Tiger Lily)
The Dynaman dub it’s not really an adaptation. Just the Japanese show just dubbed with English actors
Kyouryuu Sentai Juu (Zyu) ranger is better, the original has great setting and fighting scenes were unique.
So does Burai, Geki's older brother decent 6th warrrior with some issues. By the way Megazord, the original name is Daizyujin.
Even as a kid I remember season 2 of MMPR just looking really bad, and you could tell where the US costumes were. I think that’s around the time it was really hammered in to me that it was adapted from Japan. I think I was always aware of it because of Rita’s lip syncing.
Yeah Since they wanted to keep the MMPR suits instead of switching to Dairanger suits, you can really tell they were struggling with adapting Dairanger with not having access to the Dairanger monsters majority of the time.

16:30 Lore about Zordon, Zordon Lore, Lordon Zore
So it is my personal belief that they are all named after Zordon. After In Space, everyone knew who the power rangers were and then i'm assuming they told the news outlets about Zordon. They thought that all evil in the universe had been eliminated. Then, Terra Venture from Lost Galaxy, and Lightspeed Rescue probably used the name Zord out of respect for Zordon and what he did for their world. Of course Zordon had contact with a lot of other organizations, such as the space research building, so he could have given zord technology to other people in case of emergencies.
I think it in oposite way. That Zordon in not name at all, but it is like title as guard of zords.

I loved MMPR. I watched it religiously wish my parents made enough for the fan club, and waited until I was old enough to audition in Hollywood. Is it a dumb show? Half the time yeah. It has its standout moments and like any moment in time it shined and made an impact
The 2017 movie referenced the rock quarry thing by finding the power coins in a rock quarry. It's taken me this long to realize this.
So, Bandora basically just inadvertently powered up Daizyujin. Interesting.

49:06-49:11 Beg your pardon but no, it was not "forgotten" or "plot convenience." The people saw the Zyurangers battling the imposters and realized they had been deceived. That was shown very clearly in the episode.

I'd love to see a video game that uses today's technology to deliberately look as campy as the show did.
I want it all. The bright 90s colors with lighting effects and filters to give it that shot on video tape look, but then have the over-exposed, washed out look the recycled Sentai footage had.
Have them obviously be on wires when they do certain moves, have the really "shwooshy" sound effects. The zords need to look like plastic models and then a guy in a costume for the Megazord, and rubber costumes for the monsters, and little miniature cities where they fight.
And have the same kind of pyrotechnics and everything.
Spend a lot of money and cutting edge technology to really make it look 30 years old.

You know, in Ultraman, a Japanese series that predates both rider and sentai, actually did the whole quotegive all the powers to one person“ thing before power rangers ever did it. Specifically when the six ultra brothers gave their power to Ultraman taro so that he could use the “Cosmo miracle beam” final attack, and also become a super version.
Yeah, that was something I definitely didn't notice when I was a kid. Billy was pretty damn cut for being the "nerd" of the group.

Back in the 90s, a Coming Out party was something completely different.
Since you asked offhand in a throwaway line, I’m inclined to tell you that, while the Bible (sadly) doesn’t have a straight up Megazord, the Hebrew Bible _does_ mention 3 great unconquerable earthly beasts created by God during the Creation of Earth.
These beasts are: *Ziz,* a massive bird whose wingspan can block out the sun (sometimes called King of All Birds); *Behemoth,* a creature that’s basically one of the elephants from Lord of the Rings but even bigger (The Ruler of Land Animals); and finally *Leviathan,* the archetypal Sea Serpent and King of all Marine Life.
So while they don’t resemble the Dinozords at all, it’s interesting to note that the dynamic of Sky, Land, and Sea has appeared numerous times in 3-member Sentai shows (Sun Vulcan and Liveman in particular come to mind) while swapping out the Biblical Beasts for more naturally occurring wildlife: Ziz becomes a Red Bird of Prey, Behemoth becomes a Yellow Big Cat, and Leviathan becomes a Blue Shark/Dolphin (Shark for male ranger, Dolphin for female ranger).
I believe in the hebrew bible, Ziz, Behemoth and Leviathan existed before creation and God slew them.

Hey Pomelo Retro I have watched you Power Rangers vs Super Sentai "What's the Difference" since your original MMPR Season 1 vs Zyuranger video and it has got me thinking of ways to Atleast make things a bit more smoother or at the very least less confusing. I had thought of a few ideas/scenarios so they could've used more of the original Sentai footage from DaiRanger and Kakuranger while keeping the original cast but coming up with reasons to use the Dai Ranger and Kakuranger suits for the team while also giving a reasonable explanation to a possible Switch from Zeo Powers to Turbo Powers and maybe something to hopefully explain away Zordon being in a tube/Stuck in a time warp that seemingly shouldn't be a possibility.
Dai Ranger: Possibly somewhere during the beginning of Season 2 or at a certain point maybe there can be a monster that is too strong for the Rangers, Rita possibly getting her hands on some kind of Power that can be used as a one off to explain a power creep, or something that would cause the Dino Zords to be permanently destroyed and the power coins damaged to the point in which Morphing would be dangerous (also giving an explanation for the the other Black ranger to have his morpher in "In Space" and still being able to use it) and Zordon can tell the rangers that he was afraid that Rita would start to pump out stronger monsters and beginning to become more of a threat so maybe he and Billy could have been working on new powers to aid the rangers in the fight against Rita and be able to control the new zords that have appeared to them (or maybe just be able to use them in general as them with their previous powers damaged or otherwise would not have been able to use the new zords) and either they could still be the Mighty morphing Power Rangers or an Americanized name that fits the Dai Ranger suits just slap Mighty Morphing (Insert cheesy ranger name here) Rangers and call it a day. This way We got: More Toy Opportunities, Reason to use the Dai Ranger Suits for the rest of the Team and still have Tommy as the White Ranger, Reason for Using more of the original Dai Ranger Footage without having to use as you put it Bespoke or Zyu 2 footage. This also gives us one more Red Ranger to use for Forever Red as we could possibly have Rocky Take up the Red Dai Ranger Powers as we already Have Jason as the Red MMPR Ranger.
Kakuranger: Well again New Baddie or Power creep that destroys the Powers and Zords. This point maybe the Aquatarian Rangers could possibly jump in and help the rangers at one point and Zordon and maybe Billy could ask if the team can borrow or replicate the powers of the 'Alien' Rangers. The Aquatarians could possibly agree but under the condition that the powers be locked to the rangers at their current state meaning if Zed, Rita or whoever would misuse the powers for their own gain cannot use them at all also giving a reason for the team to search for the Zeo Crystals as the team was turned into kids and even though the powers where locked to them it was when they were their normal age and since they changed into children the powers are locked out to them as well, Same thing could happen with the Zords the Alien rangers use being locked to the Rangers at their current state(age included) and being unusable when the Rangers turn to kids. Also to give a few reasons why Billy wouldn't use or be able to use the powers of the Aquatarian Rangers is one there are only 5 of the Aquatarians and 6 of the Rangers so unfortunately Billy would have to be left out but still have an Active role in the ranger duties and another is that the powers could possibly require a healthy and active body and lifestyle, Even though Billy may seem to fit both of those requirements he actually doesnt due to not being that physically fit without his Ranger Abilities even though he does have a healthy body. During the time the rangers are doing the Zeo Search the Alien rangers could step in and do their best to protect Angel Grove from evil as our Rangers are doing the Search for the Zeo Crystals. Also to explain the reason the Zords and Powers wont be used anymore is really simple, the abilities were returned to the Aquatarians as the Rangers had gotten the Zeo Powers so they no longer need to use the Aquatarian Powers and Zords. Again more toy opportunities and reasons to use more of the original Kakuranger footage
The Switch from Zeo to Turbo(A better way to Explain the power switch): Since this begins with the Movie I would probably have it so that Devatox or one of her cronies could make a device that seals the use of the Zeo Powers/Zords for the whole team(Including the injured Rocky) making it so that even if there was a moment where it was used on One Ranger Attempting to use the Zeo Powers it would work on all of them (Somehow) then it can just be the normal flow of the movie including the Rangers getting their Turbo powers. This would probably give us a new issue are the powers being held somewhere, is there a way to get them back, or what. Well the powers/zords(Or the thing powering the Seal) could be held in a containment unit in which maybe could've been dropped by let's say Elgar (he seems to be the most clumsy of the bunch) and the rangers got it but are unable to break the seal since only Devatox can break it(or by a certain event that leads into something else like the painfully Slow counting bombs that blew up the command center) in this instance the container is put away somewhere and after the command center destruction and the move to In Space the powers can be released but it's too weak to deal with the Machine Empire as the time spent sealed weaken the powers and Zords and Any appearance by a Zeo Ranger(most likely Tommy) can be explained away as the powers having regained their original strength.
Zordon: Well here is a hypothetical scenario for why Zord is possibly still stuck in a time warp or even bound to a tube. Maybe during the whole situation with the warp gate to Eltar closing or an issue with Larago's(or Larigo however its spelled) Magic maybe they made it but It seems that Zordon was unable to fully escape the time warp and was bound to a singular tube or maybe he was able to escape but maybe due to being in the time warp all that time weakened his physical body so he had to be bound to that tube still being able to communicate with his Floating head in a tube form giving a reason for him to be able to communicate with the new team of Turbo Rangers as the transfer of powers were happening and the old rangers were gonna do their own things.
Fixed Mighty Morphing Powers: Well maybe to explain how they can be used again is simple as tapping into the morphing grid and using that energy to repair the coins but that's probably not that simple but it's all I can come up with.

If u take in the fact that Rita is working for Zed then attacking ASAP does have some logic since she's trying to get results, a fear that is justified since he shows up in person. Imagine the boss having to come to your aid while theres already the pressure of living up to master Vile
Power Rangers was basically Saved by the Bell edited with kaiju footage. Billy was Screech if he was less of a douchebag

The Morphin' Masters made their appearances in Dino Fury and Cosmic Fury.
MMPR should have included Biohunter Silva from Bioman because Haim Saban originally wanted Bioman as the first Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
That wouldn’t have been a bad decision but since Zyuranger was the first sentai they were adapting and they were pretty much a low budget show, they couldn’t really afford to shoot a lot of original fights in S1 unfortunately.

each different but each got their own thing that shines about them
Fun Fact: in MMPR season 3 the ninja zords were their first Megazord however in the sentai version Kakuranger the Shogunzords were the first megazord.

It was explained that Rita got somebody to steal the Dragon power coin. But the guy that stole it. and Realize she was evil He tried to fight back, but he was locked in a place in space Also during that time, the dragon shield Hes actually Rita's Mom Spirit that's in The Dragon power coin. It Was explained in A comic
OK but the continuity between the two media aren't always the same. So we might never know within the series how she got the coin. If they chose to change that and use that explanation in the series, then ok.

If you noticed they made Tommy The hype of the show when he really was it his character in Japan died and they just use stock footage for the next season Gosei Sentai Dairanger To bring him back to life basically because his character from the previous season died so indirectly he’s not the real business in America
They censored the crap out of all the sentia that got American dubbs to make them apporiate for American child audience. What was considered apporiate for Japanese audience would never be seen as acceptable for American slash North American audience even other continents outside of Asia like Europe would of had a royal hiss fit.
For practical effects the Dora monsters luck pretty decent.

It's freaking crazy how V.R Troopers was a Frankenstein adaptation made up of 3 different Tokusatsu series.
I watched Choujinki Metalder recently and I thought it was brilliant. Incredibly unique too IMHO, it's the first Tokusatsu show I've seen where there weren't any mooks like putties, all the 'Monsters of the Week' ended up revealed in the first couple of episodes and became recurring villains.
