construction of my pond. from july 2004 to present(feb. 07)
i built this pond by hand all by myself(except the bulk of the hole, i used a back hoe i borrowed from work)

    ultraguard liner 20mil 35'x50'@$.36sqft $630
    fiber underlayment $324
freight shipped to nearest warehouse $156
    sump pump, 3500gph 2"in/outlet around $400 + $20month
    filter/skimmer, $399+tx (what a rip-off)
all plumbing, electical wiring, outlets, etc. less than $100
    ---------------------------------------- ----
    things i didn't pay for:
back hoe, to dig the bulk of hole
concrete truck, to speed up water filling
    boulders
tri-axle dump truck, to haul boulders
    loader, to load dump truck
    van, to pick up liner/underlayment
    ---------------------------------------- ----
the 'almost' completed pond. summer of 2007. **33' long 23' wide 6' deep** and according to pondmarket.com 34000gal adjusted for ledges 30000gal. i had no idea.

I pissed off a world class pond builder when I said you don't have to spend 165 Grand to build a pond! This is just another example of resourcefulness and willingness to get it done. That you do not have to spend an arm and a leg to be happy. Well done!

Screw all the haters, this is a very nice pond. Maybe its a little short of filtration but then again natural ponds only have plants and they seem to do alright.

The CONCRETE (not cement) truck is only to fill water faster, it was not used in building the pond in any way. So your sarcastic humor has no merit. The concrete truck just replaced a simple garden hose. Do you have a garden hose?

Also, multiple levels promotes multiple temperature zones. Multiple temperature zones promote natural "currents" and that helps the water circulate naturally. And when water is circulating it also helps regulate the temperature over all. Not totally NEEDED but it's good to have if you can.

Well Believe it or not, i installed a pond for my cousins for the trill of it, and added a Ultra-Gard to their pond 30Mil PVC (thicker than yours) and in one year because of the boulders the liner tore in 16 Different place's in less than a year, So i relined it... I bought a 45 Mil EPDM Anjon Pond Liner w/ Lifetime warranty, and paid less than i did for the PVC. Till today No leaks, No fuss, No refilling everyday, No problem!

Fantastic job, but it might not be the 30K gal you think. It measures 33' L 23' W 6' D, it's not a circle, it's an ellipse, so let us start by averaging the diameter; take 33" L plus 23" W and divide it by 2, the average's 28' diameter, then the depth's 6' but again that's the deepest part, let's say on average it has 4' of depth, now let us calculate: average diameter 28' X average depth 4' X ( Pi square 3.14 X 2 ) = 1,104 cubic feet X 7.5 gal per cubic foot = 8,280 gal max. Fantastic job !

Very nice job. I just built a 520 gal pond myself with a flexable linner and that was hard enough work so I can only imagine what it was like for you. I spend about $1200.00 on everything. Since I live in Florida, the most costly part was buying the rocks ($575.00) Since Florida is mostly sand unlike the northeast where I grew up,I couldn't just go to the river and get them myself, I had to buy them at a supply store where they are trucked in from another state. Again, nice job.

@@debrapolenz4962 😂🤣😂😂 if you're building a POND, then river or lake water would be ideal, as it would carry all the natural flora and fauna endemic to the region. The last thing you want is to introduce any invasive species into the surrounding environment after a big thunderstorm or something like that, which would spread whatever is in your pond into surrounding water sources.

All you need is a pump and bio filter that can filter all the water at least two times a hour. Also buy a 2 dozen bundles of oxygenators plants. you'll never have algae problem again

Your pond doesn't look like it could be much wider than 20 ft in the widest direction, but if we generously assume it is 20 ft X 20 ft x 5 ft deep (ignoring the shelves), that would be 2,000 sq ft.
2,000 sq ft is = 14,961 US gal A little short of 30,000 gallons. In reality the shelves would make it much less than 14,961 gallons.

The bog garden, or what you call "natural filter" at the top is a good thing to have. You need a few more plants, shrubs and aquatic plants tho. And that overgrown hot tub up on the hill has to go.
