    This is a compilation video of a 4 part series I uploaded a while back showing every stage of building and explaining how to build a pond for fish. It shows all the various steps taken to make a fish pond which is safe and accessible.
    In this fish pond video, the start of each section is at the following time:
    0:06 Digging the hole and laying the underlay / liner
    7:44 Installing the cascade
    24:02 Installing the edging, pump and filter
    36:16 Rockery and finished pond with pump and filter details
    45:32 Out-takes
    Pump is Oase Aquamax Eco 8000 and the filter is an Oase Filtoclear 30000.
    Liner is 1mm Firestone rubber.
    Underlay is 300g / sq.m polyester underlay.
    The design of this pond allows for good access and different positioning of the pump for winter and summer positions.
    Check out my pond construction playlist for pond building guides covering many different types of ponds including wildlife ponds. fish ponds and koi ponds.

    I was building ponds in the early 90's, and I must say without a doubt. This is the best how to build a pond video out there. You are a fantastic teacher and your attention to detail is a great asset. If anyone wants to know how to DIY a pond watch and watch again. Thank you for your knowledge.

    This is the Best 4 part video on building a Pond! I just Love The Pond Guru’s accent. He explains step by step exactly what to do. I even took screen shots and printed off the pictures to do my very own “Duck Pond”. Thank you Pond Guru! You make it look a lot easier than it’s been for me. But It is my first and it’s looking really good(if mortar holds). I hope I mixed it as you said. I just love your videos! Thank You!!!!

    As an ex aquatics supplier, now retired and having built a few ponds I can honestly say your methods and the way you explain the reasons are truly spot on. While the pond is not designed for serious Koi keeping it is more than adequate for keeping some really nice pond fish and attracting wild life. I know I'm late to the party but thank you for sharing.

    I have watched plenty of pond guide videos and you put most of them to shame. I leard alot so thank you.
    It is obvious you are good at what you do. A good mix of not caring about getting your hands dirty and an eye for the artisic stuff with the rocks. I like you are accomodating to the critters as well =p
    You also highlighted for me the need for good quality materials. It really shows in the end result.

    This is by far one of the very best videos on building a pond that I have ever seen! You have the most detailed information and I hope the German company who manufactures this filter and pump uses this part of your video for their commercial. I especially appreciate the information on the filter and on the pump as well. The word is pronounced "si-----mul--taneous--ly. The "I" sounds like "TYME."

    Hi Richard, just want to say a quick thank you for all the time and effort you've put into your videos. They've inspired my girlfriend and I to make our very own ponds - a small container pond based on an old cattle trough which we're very proud of and a conventional pond which utilises a lot of your ideas and to which we're about to add a waterfall/cascade. We did intend to make a video using Geordie accents but forgot! Besides, she sounds like Joanna Lumley, though is from Newcastle as I am.

      I agree. I would love to see what he did about the rockery and perhaps what it looked like when established. A Very good presentation and very informative. I wished I had realised just how you can use mortar the way he does when I built my pond 30 years ago. Its now so overgrown you cannot see it and I believe it has an old shipping trolly semi submerged. Lost interest in it I'm afraid.

    The price of pump and filter will be different from time I made this video but check online. Model of both is mentioned in video description. Liner is 1mm rubber (Firestone) and liner is 300g per sq.m polyester. If you're local juts work out how much liner and underlay you need and we can price it for you no worries. Same with pump and filter. Shop number 01661844005. If you are not local to the North East please support your local pond supplies dealer.

    My hubby and I both loved your video AND your accent! ...it was very informative. We have a few questions: 1) Does the more expensive filter/pump/filtering waterfall mean less cleaning of the units? Some have "baskets" that you take out and empty and some have all sorts of filter mats/sponges/media bags/bio balls/etc. that must be washed off daily with a hose...we are looking for the least amount of work for our pond and if the more expensive units mean less work, than that's what we want. 2) I'm seeing the name brands of Atlantic, Oasis, and Savio a lot in my pond-shopping. Is one brand better than another? 3) One of the filters I ran across has "Patented Integrated UV System Housing" so does that mean it has the UV filters inside of it? Do you recommend that over buying a separate UV light? 4) we are looking at pond kits to make it easier for us to install....do you recommend kits and if so, what name brand is a good one to go with for the least amount of work? We are looking for a pond that's about 1800-2000 gallons...and finally 5) do you recommend gold fish or koi and what's the difference? I've heard koi will eat all your plants and I want plants in my pond...thanks for your expertise! Your new fans, Darleen & David Riffle

      United States. Basically, what is the easiest to maintain type of filter, pump, and waterfall filter? Thanks so much! Darleen

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  7 лет назад +3

      The pressure filters are very good as they can be hidden out of the way and still have the outlet feeding up to a cascade. I'm not involved in the US market so don't know what is available there but as long as you go for a pump big enough to give a good flow down the cascade.
      When sizing the pump you will need to give the dealer the vertical measurement from water surface to highest point of cascade, width of widest fall of cascade and the length (and internal diameter) of the pipe for them to properly size a pump for the job.
      Once that flow rate for cascade was worked out you'd take 10%-15% off for the pressure filter (that is normally how much flow is restricted by a pressure filter). Once that is worked out then step up to the next pump up if necessary.
      The Oase pumps are expensive but are very reliable, very low maintenance and have very low running costs which is a major concern considering a filter needs to run 24/7. I have seen many pumps available in the US and the running costs are crazy as they are such high wattage (power consumption).
      The filter would be sized depending on the pond volume and stock e.g. a 20000 filter would suit a 10000 pond with a mix of fish or a 7000-8000 pond with koi. It depends on the manufacturer but most will have sensible information on how capable each model of filter is.
      Hope that helps.

      +Pondguru Outdoors yes I'm in the usa. 40 mil is the thickness of the pond liner and grade. firestone is the best and most expensive. but well worth it. I've built well over 30000 koi ponds since I've been doing them. almost 5yrs. it's a big demand here. and people want there ponds to last so I use 40 mil. it's durable and less likely to become brittle. it has a lifetime warrenty

      I'm glad you enjoy the videos as I put them up purely to help people.
      I used to have a fakebook page for my shop a few years ago but deleted it when I closed the shop. Although the idea of it was useful for posting a list of new fish arriving / special offers / videos etc. there was a nation of people asking banal questions then getting aggressive when they weren't answered in a few minutes.....so many time wasters.
      I really don't like fakebook as it is a digital ego trap - I'm just happy to put information out for free on RUclips and leave the promotion and sharing to other viewers who think the videos may help other people so sometimes my videos end up on fakebook, twitter etc.
      In an ideal world I would like to make many more videos but answering so many comments takes up about 3-4 hours every day, lol
      I was thinking of doing a 'viewers tanks / ponds' video series where I would do a short intro then play a video from anyone who had been helped by the videos I'd put out over the years then filmed their own pond / tank for the series or for their channel so if you have any videos of your project I'd be more than happy to feature it on the channel.

      I'll be making videos showing the progression of a huge filter I'm making for my large pond so that will be a series to look forward to as there will be so many different types of filtration discussed and demonstrated.

    This is way beyond the best from USA or anywhere else. I watched it and learned so much! You have the filter outside, is that better than inside the pond. Mine is in the water and leads to UV lamp and return. I like your instructions and You are the best!

    great video....you are the first one who used cement of all the videos I've watched....now I have a lot to think about as I plan my pond! Thank you!

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  7 лет назад

      No worries, glad you found the video useful. Cement is fine as long as you use a waterproofer in the mix and fill the pond about a week or two after the cementing is complete, run for a few days then completely drain and refill to remove most of the lime from water. A week or two after that it will be fine to introduce fish.

    I am a subscriber, of course. Your attention to detail is fantastic. Anyone can dig a hole and fling the dirt away with no thought to function. Filling my head with ideas for my property and looking forward to seeing more work. Oh and don't listen to these chubs on youtube talking trash. This is like university and just like there, a few eggheads hide their lack of skill, talent, common sense and self confidence by chewing on someone else and being a fool. Good on you my son.

    Great video.
    It as inspired me, well my wife, and then she inspired me to build a pond with cascade for her. It was a fantastic editorial. This is my first ever project such as this and would have found it absolutely daunting if this video wasn't available.
    Keep up the good work.

    Yes, I regularly build on shelves which will be submerged and normally do that to retain loose cobbles behind the rocks / cobbles I have cemented in. That prevents them falling into the pond.

    Very nice pond & absolutely excellent instruction. I have watched a lot of these pond builds, and they tend to skip many of the important details for those of us new to this. You did an amazing job. I feel like I could build a pond from this video alone. Thank you! I am curious to know why you didn't put a cement base under the flat sandstone (under the walk-on edge & big flat stones).

    It has around 12 very large goldfish and shubunkin in there and thats about right. There is a book called 'Backyard fish farming' which may be of use to you. U used to have a copy lying around but not sure where it is. It tells you all you will need to know about setting up a small fish farm from home.

    I think they are the best pumps and that's why I use them in all my pond jobs too.
    Thanks for watching, man.

  • @pondguru
    @pondguru  11 лет назад

    Will it last 'til winter? Are you expecting it to self-destruct? lol
    Yes it will be fine over the seasons and as explained in the video the pump can be moved to just under the cascade when the weather is cold to avoid disturbing the deeper (relatively warmer) water and chilling the fish. Always best to keep the pump running and move the pump as this keeps the filter bacteria alive and avoids new set up or lag in the spring.
    Thanks for watching and appreciating the videos.

    I used to be the head gardener for the J Arthur Rank family who had an estate just north of Alnwick. Must admit I've always shied away from garden ponds as most just manage to look incredibly naff but you have inspired me to have a go. Ours hopefully resembles a long established pond with a slightly negelected air to it. I don't know if it's our age but we both find them totally compelling and spend an awful lot of time just staring at the water. I'm more interested in plants than fish.

    Pond guru, I don't subscribe to many channels, but you are so enjoyable to learn from and so entertaining, I felt I would in hopes of watching a few more of your exploration. Though it seems I'm not able to see where or how to subscribe? Any help or ideas? My great uncle was a gold and precious metal miner, here in the western US of A. He was a genius and showed me how to call rabbits. You are the first you tuber I've ever seen show this skill, I thank ya. Cheers!

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 лет назад

      I'm glad you enjoy the videos and that you've heard of calling rabbits before - most people think I'm a bit strange for trying such a thing.
      With regard to the subscribing thing there should be a 'subscribe' button on my channel or next to every video plus a bell icon if you want to be notified of new uploads.
      Regards,
      Richard

      Thanks for the replies. This is the second time my back has gone too. It's frustrating but just got to stay positive! I used the same pump and filters as you use on your ponds as well for my pond. Probably slightly to big for my pond but very good system!

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  10 лет назад

      mothballjim Yes it is a good system and if you did go too big it is never a bad thing as maintenance will be less frequent than with a small filter.

That should kickstart something good.
