    I really like the appearance of the pond. I just wanted one that was deeper and bigger. Something all pond owners should do at their pond is what you show here. Place some stone or heavy gravel at the bottom so it does not look like a large black plastic bag that doesn't make your fish happy. Koi loves to foraging on the bottom and they can easily here. Fantastic!

    • @ThePondAdvisor
      @ThePondAdvisor  5 лет назад

      You got it, bigger and deeper is much better for keeping bigger pond fish. They love this pond and it works as they have a place to hide. Less stress plus much better to keep clean.

      What does the wet lands filter Do?. Is it the same as and normal filter or no?

    • @ThePondAdvisor
      @ThePondAdvisor  6 лет назад +3

      They (the gravel and pebbles, that the water percolate up through) provide lots of surface area for biological activity. Wetland filters are large gravel filters, much more natural easier to hide. But yes the do the same job as others biological filters, they are custom made and often hold more waste. We do not need any form of chemical filtration (no Uv filters). The main reason I put the wetland on this pond was the amount of koi carp (Koi Fish).

    Hi Mark, what size pond would you recommend for koi? I just wondered as the one you have built here doesn't look all that big? thanks

    • @ThePondAdvisor
      @ThePondAdvisor  5 лет назад +2

      Our smallest koi pond we recommend is 11’ by 16’ but if you have old fish in a smaller pond like this one (15 years in a 8’ by 8’) they will be ok in a 10’ by 8’ pond. You will not get the best out of koi if you put young fish in a small pond. They will be fine just will not grow. A lot of people say 1000 gals (4500 litres) is the small you should go. Well in the system we have that as the skimmer and the wetland add to the total volume of water as these are both on the outside of the 10’ by 8’ pond. Great question, the big the pond the bigger the fish, I have fish over 1m long but they are in 6000gal 27,000lts

    I need some help and advice please... if anyone can help ... during lockdown I have decided to extend my little pond to a bigger one. 13.5 feet x 5.5 feet... width of my garden with a footbridge over it. One side is 29” deep, other side 24” deep. Firstly, does it matter what type of underlay I have and what thickness of liner would you suggest? I’m not planning to have fish in it but may be one day might change my mind... I’ve watched so many videos and many of them fit a pond slimmer? Would you guys recommend this? The deep end of the pond does have overhanging trees which does drop lots of leaves but the skimmer would have to go the opposite side of the bridge... would that still work? The pond narrows under the bridge ..

    • @ThePondAdvisor
      @ThePondAdvisor  4 года назад +1

      underlay thick, 1mm EPDM in the UK (0.45mil in US & CA its the same), yes i recommend skimming systems, if you have a waterfall under the tree yes 100% if not use a return jet, draw water from the skimmer and push it around so it sweeps the surface

      Thanks so much for the help but what sort of pond skimmer would I be looking at? Do I need one like BIOsys Skimmer + Surface Skimmer or a smaller one that floats? My waterfall will be directly under trees and my previous pond, albeit small did get a lot of leaves at the bottom..

    • @ThePondAdvisor
      @ThePondAdvisor  4 года назад +2

      Julie Freeman I do not like the Oase skimmers mainly due to the size and quality, we would recommend the professional grade, you can’t simply upgrade if you don’t get on with them, we have a number of clients that take the Oase ones out. Which size depends on a couple of things. I would over size the skimmer when ever you have trees and also recommend a cover net in the autumn/fall
      I love the new 1000 or the 400 these two are the best in the business

      In a word - fish. If you want fish you can't have a wildlife pond as the fish will eat every dragonfly nymph, midge pupa, damsel fly nymph, tadpole or baby newt which tries to grow in their pond. I used to keep fish but gave them to a neighbour's young son for his pond and now just keep mine for any wildlife which is drawn to the water. The birds love it too.

    A lot of comments about pond being too small, they are right but they are forgetting a couple of important facts, you can only build a pond to what the customer wants and can afford. A proper koi pond costs a small fortune to build and running costs can be pretty steep as well.

      If you want more than two aquabloc’s then cut a hole in the vault and use a 6” pipe (same but on a smaller scale as the snorkel and centipede) the flow should come in the pipe end and just use the vault for cleanouts.

      @@ThePondAdvisor Thank you very much for your response. So basically, you did the opposite set up of Pondless® Waterfall Vault, where official Aquascape set up is with water flowing inside the vault, where pump takes water out. I didn´t find any site selling Aquascape products in Europe however. Is there a way to buy it in Europe ( without buying it directly from US and paying fees ), or is there an alternative product on our market? Couldn´t find anything similar. All retailers only sell classic filters.

      @@ThePondAdvisor Thanks for answering so quickly! I want to make my pond bigger and deeper, I'm thinking about 4 meters × 8 meters and about 1 meter deep. I live in Switzerland and the climate is pretty cold in the winter, so the pond would definitely freeze. As for animals, we currently have a few frogs and water salamanders. We would like to get some small fish, but we don't know which ones could withstand the cold weather yet.

    • @ThePondAdvisor
      @ThePondAdvisor  5 лет назад +2

      I am not 100% sure about what you have in Switzerland, but it’s not the cold that kills the koi and goldfish around the world it’s the bacteria reducing the oxygen levels. So don’t worry about the cold worry about the design. Research more into wetland filtration and an intack bay. What temperature zone is Switzerland in?

    • @yoosh_arts
      @yoosh_arts 5 лет назад +1

      @@ThePondAdvisor Oh! Good to know, I will try to research. Well, from July to August the daytime temperature range is 18 to 28 °C (65° - 82° F) and from January to February the range is -2 to 7 °C (28° - 45° F). In spring and autumn, the daytime temperature range is 8 to 15 °C (46° - 59° F). I've seen a few koi fish ponds in Switzerland, so they would be able to survive for sure. I'm hoping to get some less expensive ones for starters though.

    Sorry for my "pond half empty" comment but i do think there are far too many submerged jagged edged rocks that can be harmful to the fish in the breeding season and when they are highly active at feeding time. Other than that it´s very creative work.

    • @pansepot1490
      @pansepot1490 6 лет назад +1

      Wibbs, the white liner is to protect the rubber liner from the rocks. Rocks often have sharp edges and they can puncture the rubber if they are placed directly on it.
      It's not needed if you don't line the pond with rocks. It's a lot of work and money but the pond looks natural and way more beautiful than with a bare black liner, especially if it's a small pond. Eventually it's about aesthetic preferences and budget.

    • @ThePondAdvisor
      @ThePondAdvisor  6 лет назад +1

      Its the same as we use under the liner, its an overlay, we only use it to protect the liner from the rock and gravel and the glass table top. It also binds all of it together. The waterfall foam will not stick to the EPDM liner as well as the fleece overlay.
