So nice you found this out. I have been building fish ponds for over forty years.
I would love to see some of your work. Where about’s are you?
This video is extremely helpful in understanding the application of non-woven geotextiles in building fish ponds. We respectfully request permission to distribute this video to fellow landscapers as an educational resource. Many thanks
This is actually a well composed video. Presenting what you are going to do and after that showing it.
Thank you, it means a lot
Looks amazing but all that work for a tiny fish hole. Looks crammed! They need to be able to swim don’t they?
tyler Zwan thanks for your feedback, it looks smaller than it is due to the large fish cave.
i felt the same thing.. like they had created alot more rock and water running bed but the fish are all crammed into a space similar to what they had before.
Great video! The fish are going to be so much happier in their new pond. You did a great job of explaining everything.
Jennifer Zuri thank you it means a lot
I really like the appearance of the pond. I just wanted one that was deeper and bigger. Something all pond owners should do at their pond is what you show here. Place some stone or heavy gravel at the bottom so it does not look like a large black plastic bag that doesn't make your fish happy. Koi loves to foraging on the bottom and they can easily here. Fantastic!
You got it, bigger and deeper is much better for keeping bigger pond fish. They love this pond and it works as they have a place to hide. Less stress plus much better to keep clean.
Awesome video. I love how you added a wetland filter on a smaller pond.
Thank you, you can add them to any size pond as you can tell I love them.
Do you have any questions on how we built this pond or do you need any help re building a fish pond?
What does the wet lands filter Do?. Is it the same as and normal filter or no?
They (the gravel and pebbles, that the water percolate up through) provide lots of surface area for biological activity. Wetland filters are large gravel filters, much more natural easier to hide. But yes the do the same job as others biological filters, they are custom made and often hold more waste. We do not need any form of chemical filtration (no Uv filters). The main reason I put the wetland on this pond was the amount of koi carp (Koi Fish).
@@ThePondAdvisor ok thank you

This is sensational!!!! What an amazing piece of work! Pure art!

Hi Mark, what size pond would you recommend for koi? I just wondered as the one you have built here doesn't look all that big? thanks
Our smallest koi pond we recommend is 11’ by 16’ but if you have old fish in a smaller pond like this one (15 years in a 8’ by 8’) they will be ok in a 10’ by 8’ pond. You will not get the best out of koi if you put young fish in a small pond. They will be fine just will not grow. A lot of people say 1000 gals (4500 litres) is the small you should go. Well in the system we have that as the skimmer and the wetland add to the total volume of water as these are both on the outside of the 10’ by 8’ pond. Great question, the big the pond the bigger the fish, I have fish over 1m long but they are in 6000gal 27,000lts
The Pond Advisor thanks for your reply.

thank you for your time
I need some help and advice please... if anyone can help ... during lockdown I have decided to extend my little pond to a bigger one. 13.5 feet x 5.5 feet... width of my garden with a footbridge over it. One side is 29” deep, other side 24” deep. Firstly, does it matter what type of underlay I have and what thickness of liner would you suggest? I’m not planning to have fish in it but may be one day might change my mind... I’ve watched so many videos and many of them fit a pond slimmer? Would you guys recommend this? The deep end of the pond does have overhanging trees which does drop lots of leaves but the skimmer would have to go the opposite side of the bridge... would that still work? The pond narrows under the bridge ..
underlay thick, 1mm EPDM in the UK (0.45mil in US & CA its the same), yes i recommend skimming systems, if you have a waterfall under the tree yes 100% if not use a return jet, draw water from the skimmer and push it around so it sweeps the surface
if your in Europe and you need any product from this video here is a link (you can type in what you are looking for)

Thanks so much for the help but what sort of pond skimmer would I be looking at? Do I need one like BIOsys Skimmer + Surface Skimmer or a smaller one that floats? My waterfall will be directly under trees and my previous pond, albeit small did get a lot of leaves at the bottom..
Julie Freeman I do not like the Oase skimmers mainly due to the size and quality, we would recommend the professional grade, you can’t simply upgrade if you don’t get on with them, we have a number of clients that take the Oase ones out. Which size depends on a couple of things. I would over size the skimmer when ever you have trees and also recommend a cover net in the autumn/fall
I love the new 1000 or the 400 these two are the best in the business
Really like this idea Mark, sound, fish, plants, natural

Although mine is a wildlife pond I really enjoy watching all your videos Mark, creative indeed. Many thanks.
I have a number of wildlife pond videos
In a word - fish. If you want fish you can't have a wildlife pond as the fish will eat every dragonfly nymph, midge pupa, damsel fly nymph, tadpole or baby newt which tries to grow in their pond. I used to keep fish but gave them to a neighbour's young son for his pond and now just keep mine for any wildlife which is drawn to the water. The birds love it too.
Very neat I love how u incorporated the wet land into the mix

It rained pretty hard last night and my pond liner floated water got through the sides or through the wet ground what can you recommend
Under pond drainage, so any under pond water can drain away from the pond. Raise the pond level higher than the ground level so it never raises the pond liner.
Love this video the natural pond looks great and its a good water feature on the yard. The fishes have good space. I was lookinh for a video on building earth pond cos i want to get someone to build one for me and thanks for video well presented and pond professionaly done.❤

Any price /cost for the pond work and the location of the work?
anypond.com/cost-to-build-a-pond/
A lot of comments about pond being too small, they are right but they are forgetting a couple of important facts, you can only build a pond to what the customer wants and can afford. A proper koi pond costs a small fortune to build and running costs can be pretty steep as well.
You hit the nail on the head.
@@donwilliams4113 it would be great to see your projects.
You can build your own koi pond very cheaply or for a friend but when you are building for paying clients you can’t cut any anything out. I have fish holding systems that cost me £11 per 1000 UK gals per year. Using air to move the water up and around wetland filters.

Amazing job! Can you please tell us more about the Wetland filter used in the video? It looks like Pondless Pondless® Waterfall Vault from Aquascape. Can it be used as wetland filtration? I checked their site and only wetland filter was the Snorkel + Vault set up, which seems too big and expensive for me.
Miro Psencik yes on the scale you can use two aquabloc’s and a pump vault to clean it.
Miro Psencik snorkel and centipede are designed for a wetland filter 8’ by 10’ bigger than this pond!
If you want more than two aquabloc’s then cut a hole in the vault and use a 6” pipe (same but on a smaller scale as the snorkel and centipede) the flow should come in the pipe end and just use the vault for cleanouts.
@@ThePondAdvisor Thank you very much for your response. So basically, you did the opposite set up of Pondless® Waterfall Vault, where official Aquascape set up is with water flowing inside the vault, where pump takes water out. I didn´t find any site selling Aquascape products in Europe however. Is there a way to buy it in Europe ( without buying it directly from US and paying fees ), or is there an alternative product on our market? Couldn´t find anything similar. All retailers only sell classic filters.
@@ThePondAdvisor Beautiful job, as usual! BUT, I'm a little confused as to how you feed the wetland filter. I tried to keep up with the speedy video of your plumbing, but didn't manage to see what feeds the wetland filter. Is it the waterfall itself? Doesn't the water come up from the bottom of the bog?
how do I get hold of a pump vault please

I have never seen putting the protective liner under and on top of the rubber liner. Interesting!
Cheap insurance
The Pond Advisor An extra liner of that type must also provide more surface area for beneficials. It’s use is worthy of a comment from you since no one else seems to do that.
Thomas Krafft I try and reply to everyone, yes beneficial bacteria will grow on the surface of the fleece and on all the natural rocks and gravel. A lot of people do not use an overlay or rocks and gravel. Then wonder why the pool starts to leak in a couple of years or if a dog jumps in.
The Pond Advisor Sorry-I wasn’t asking for a reply to me directly. I meant that when you use the extra liner next time in a video to consider commenting in it. 😉
Thomas Krafft I have on a number of my other pond building showcase videos. Not be sorry I love the feedback it helps me.

great video. will be perfect if you talk a bit more about the products. I notice you put something below the liner then another layer of that same something on top of it. Also about the skimmer, and the waterfall brand and products. not sure we have those in Spain. info will be appreciated
Fernando Ecamp they might not be available in Spain at the moment, I might be able to get them to you as we have them in the UK 🇬🇧 my email is mark@anypond.com, I must warn you they are quality bits of kit so come with that price tag.
Can you please name those 2 materials you put twice before the rocks? the black one and the white one. I just didn't catch it. Thanks
Fernanda Alemán the black one is the waterproof bag, an EPDM rubber pond liner, with a double up of white pond underlay and overlay.
Nice video, very informative, I need this to build my own pond, hope I can start it soon
How are you getting on? Did you start?
Awesome job! (Louisiana, U.S.A.)

Nice video mark helps me alot!!!!
No Face thank’s mate,
I now know how to build a fish pond like a pro. Well done it looks great
thanks
It is not like a pro dude. You become a pro by researching more than one peice of evidence and applying the best in your evaluation. This pond has various weaknesses.
not all ponds are created equal, this pond was built perfectly for our clients needs
what was that white liner material?
It’s underlay, it protects the rubber from the rocks and gravel and the soil.
Could you please you explain filters to me? do you need a filter and a pump or are they one thing? how many would i need?
That’s a good question, yes and no their are a number of different types of filters. filter pumps - all in one units but most are separate pump and filter. What size is your pond and what are you keeping in it. Where about’s are you as well.
@@ThePondAdvisor Thanks for answering so quickly! I want to make my pond bigger and deeper, I'm thinking about 4 meters × 8 meters and about 1 meter deep. I live in Switzerland and the climate is pretty cold in the winter, so the pond would definitely freeze. As for animals, we currently have a few frogs and water salamanders. We would like to get some small fish, but we don't know which ones could withstand the cold weather yet.
I am not 100% sure about what you have in Switzerland, but it’s not the cold that kills the koi and goldfish around the world it’s the bacteria reducing the oxygen levels. So don’t worry about the cold worry about the design. Research more into wetland filtration and an intack bay. What temperature zone is Switzerland in?
@@ThePondAdvisor Oh! Good to know, I will try to research. Well, from July to August the daytime temperature range is 18 to 28 °C (65° - 82° F) and from January to February the range is -2 to 7 °C (28° - 45° F). In spring and autumn, the daytime temperature range is 8 to 15 °C (46° - 59° F). I've seen a few koi fish ponds in Switzerland, so they would be able to survive for sure. I'm hoping to get some less expensive ones for starters though.
Yeshe Tsultrim let me know how you get on!
What's the "cement" called they use for the rocks and the tool used to pump it?
Thanks for the question, I use landscape foam, not cement, the tool used to pump it is a foam gun. look into PU foam or waterfall foam

No sure, I downloaded it from RUclips free music
Don´t ya think the rock works grate? ...yes they do :)
Sorry for my "pond half empty" comment but i do think there are far too many submerged jagged edged rocks that can be harmful to the fish in the breeding season and when they are highly active at feeding time. Other than that it´s very creative work.
thanks for your comment and concern, This rock does not really have many jagged edges (like other rocks). But totally understand your comment. We don't have a problem because the fish will spawn in the brooklime and the home owner feeds in the middle of the pond.
I made a pond once {just Goldfish and Guppys (Millionsfish)} that I made just by digging a hole (6 inches to about 2 feet deep),
and then lining it with that Black Gardening Plastic... lasted a couple of years! Always wanted something similar to this though! Problem is, I can't afford it! Oh, Well! lol Beautiful transformation here... you do great work! :-)
Thank you very much, we all start somewhere, I had six paper rounds to fund my addiction of ponds and water features when I was 11. I also tried filling a hole with a rubbish bin liner.
@@ThePondAdvisor LOL I think the main problem I had was I had no money for good filtration,
so I was cleaning it out every other month... a lot of work! I'm just going to get my tank going again! :-)

It's a lovely pond. Looks great.
Thank you
What is the white liner you put on the pond before you added the rocks and substrates? And I it necessity for a pond? I just want to know if I will be needing somting like that asweal as the pond liner.
Wibbs, the white liner is to protect the rubber liner from the rocks. Rocks often have sharp edges and they can puncture the rubber if they are placed directly on it.
It's not needed if you don't line the pond with rocks. It's a lot of work and money but the pond looks natural and way more beautiful than with a bare black liner, especially if it's a small pond. Eventually it's about aesthetic preferences and budget.
Its the same as we use under the liner, its an overlay, we only use it to protect the liner from the rock and gravel and the glass table top. It also binds all of it together. The waterfall foam will not stick to the EPDM liner as well as the fleece overlay.
