Buy cheap land on a swamp, and dig a big gouge out of the middle, bottom-most part of your land. It will drain a lot of the swampy area into a pond-like area instead. Or wait until one of the trees in the swamp falls over, and it should look like a natural pond. Just dig it out more and you'll have a pond next to a fallen over tree's root ball. Likely already shaded because it is in a swamp with tall trees.

I let my grass and the weeds grow last year and was amazed by how much better it looked without me doing a thing. Next step is to experiment with multiple single seating areas connected by a small path, water placed somewhere, and adding my own plants in those areas where the weeds thrived. The fun part, which I didn't realize to start with, is that I get to experiment with the garden every year.

We have two ponds, one in front and one in back, built by the previous owner. While there was a learning curve to getting the maintenance right, we really love them now. The frogs at night are just amazing, and all kinds of birds visiting all day long.

I love that digging bar with the blade end. I hand dug a pond on my property a few years back where the ground was clay with rocks embedded in it. Nice for the final pond, which did not need a liner, but it means every scoop I dug out had to be fought for with a pick, and some angles were not easy to swing a pick at. I did have a digging bar but the flat end is less than 2 inches wide and it made for slow going. As a side note, if you have clay soil it does make for a very natural pond, but with no liner size limits you may end up thinking "just a little deeper, just a little wider, just another hour of digging today" and that's how the my plan of a three foot deep goldfish pond got a little out of hand and now I have an eight foot deep pond with a bass and some trout living in it.

And to think I e been worried about soil sneaking into my current “all stone” pond gives me much better ideas for treating my excess overhang. Cutting it off! Great video.

Hi Glenda! :) Thank you for this, although I must point out that it's the poorer subsoils that you need for any soil IN the pond, the other soil is fine for around the edges and allows you to plant directly into it - this 3 part series showing how I made this pond and the reason this method is used is here:
      ruclips.net/video/lKrjMv6TMlU/видео.html
Just wanted to make sure you weren't about to put topsoil in the pond as this will float about and add nutrients to the water, encouraging blanket weed etc. Hope this helps and thanks again, welcome to the channel! Best wishes - Joel

Yes, this can be used and also on top of the liner to ensure the subsoil does not slip off, once the subsoil is in no liner is seen :)

I know the feeling well! This is one of very few dug by hand, but the client's garden had steep steps to the rear and a wheelbarrow was useless too, hence the bucket loads of soil! Best wishes, Joel

Did you just use the soil you excavated in the pond or did you use a low nutrient substrate?

    • @WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton

A bit of both Krisztian! 😁 I wasn’t able to excavate enough for the pond, so imported some low nutrient soils

These natural ponds attract a lot of birds, amphibians, bats and larger insects so they soon make a dent in any mosquito numbers and their larvae :) Here's how the ponds look after a few weeks when the plants establish though - it's important to have 60-70% coverage of the pond with floating leaved plants and of course native oxygenating plants:
