      @@maggiewright1781 Hi Maggie, it's deep (enough!) in the middle for toads and frogs tend to use shallow water for breeding, but there would be newts, dragonflies, damselflies and of course all the creatures that need insects or any mosquito larvae, such as larger insects, birds, amphibians and bats - they certainly take care of any likely mosquitoes :) Best wishes, Joel

      Buy cheap land on a swamp, and dig a big gouge out of the middle, bottom-most part of your land. It will drain a lot of the swampy area into a pond-like area instead. Or wait until one of the trees in the swamp falls over, and it should look like a natural pond. Just dig it out more and you'll have a pond next to a fallen over tree's root ball. Likely already shaded because it is in a swamp with tall trees.

I let my grass and the weeds grow last year and was amazed by how much better it looked without me doing a thing. Next step is to experiment with multiple single seating areas connected by a small path, water placed somewhere, and adding my own plants in those areas where the weeds thrived. The fun part, which I didn't realize to start with, is that I get to experiment with the garden every year.

      Hello to you in Japan! I really appreciate your comment, thank you - especially from the country that knows how to do beautiful ponds! Although these ponds are not good for Koi they are good for wildlife, insects, bats, birds, amphibians - we are having to look after our nature here, we have lost so much and it is important that we make spaces for it here :) Best wishes to you and yours - I subscribed to your channel, so relaxing and beautiful fish of course :) Joel

    You did a really good job. I am a wild life vet and ethologist in Iceland and japan, so i am of course all about recreating (in any scale) wild life habitat.
    I however feel much respect for you and a tad alarmed for creating a pond so close to your house.
    The plague of mosquitoes infestation you must have suffered the following summer, must have biblical.
    I have a pond near my house in Japan and although it is gorgeous, i have to endure hell every summer, although the pond is at least 30 meters away from the house. I maintain it because it is a natural pond, was there when i got the house and it houses countless wildlife, and the oldest Koi in the pond is said to be 90 years old so i would never disturb that old lady. But now i schedule my work in Iceland in Summer so i can be away from the pond.
    Luckily UK summers are nothing compared to Japanese ones, which are extremely hot and humid so maybe you do not have such a big mosquitoes problems.

    I love that digging bar with the blade end. I hand dug a pond on my property a few years back where the ground was clay with rocks embedded in it. Nice for the final pond, which did not need a liner, but it means every scoop I dug out had to be fought for with a pick, and some angles were not easy to swing a pick at. I did have a digging bar but the flat end is less than 2 inches wide and it made for slow going. As a side note, if you have clay soil it does make for a very natural pond, but with no liner size limits you may end up thinking "just a little deeper, just a little wider, just another hour of digging today" and that's how the my plan of a three foot deep goldfish pond got a little out of hand and now I have an eight foot deep pond with a bass and some trout living in it.

    I built my pond and stream not specifically as a wildlife pond, but all the same it gets so much, every years damsels and dragonflies emerge. Fish wise it mostly has rainbow shiners, but the are max 3" in size. Amazing colour in breeding "dress" which as around 6 months of the year. I guess they have as much impact on the system as English minnows, just better looking. 😁

    My street now has its own pond because after a hurricane there was a lot of flooding and on my street there was a small patch of grass that had a rather deep ditch in it and after it was flooded nature took its place and made a little ecosystem out of it with a few native plants and critters! After a while I introduced some minnows and they're doing very well in there. I guess you could say it's my pond now as I am the only one who maintains it 😅. (I'm in the UK btw).

      Hey! Thank you - that means a lot, welcome to the channel, there are lots of videos there showing before and after landscaping works and I'm currently trying to edit and upload another pond, showing the "after" and all the wildlife that visits, hoping it will upload this evening - wish me luck! Best wishes, Joel

      It's nice pond but should put some flow & filter so that murky water will turn gradually clear & encourage more bio oxygen dissolved so microsystem in the water it's self can support living things in there 😘

    • @WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton
      @WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton  3 года назад +3

      Hi Zahid - sorry I missed your reply - the footage is when the pond was just finished so needed a day or two to settle - there are oxygenator plants in the pond and these will keep it clear. If fish are introduced then definitely a filter of electric type of course as they can mess up a still pond - many thanks for your comment Zahid, best wishes to you - Joel

    looks great and inspired some ideas to form in my noggins! I was thinking the pond might be in the way for gardening in the back corner over there. How is the pond doing in 2022 and was that ever a issue?

    • @WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton
      @WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton  2 года назад +3

      Hi Justin - this was the best place for the pond in this smaller garden, they're best in the sunniest spot and away from trees - I am yet to return to this pond and film it again as I work all over the country so it's difficult to return to the same place, but I do try - you can see just a few of the many others created using this method in this short video here, which might help and give some more ideas for you :)
