  • Join Alex Battaglia and John Linneman for a detailed breakdown of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake. We check out PS4 Pro and PS4 visual comparisons and performance and appreciate the often stunning use of Unreal Engine 4. It's a beautiful game but it's not flawless. What's up with the texture popping and can an SSD brute force your way through the issues?

    The Texture loading issue has been an issue with the Unreal Engine for a long long time. I remember last gen, most Unreal 3 games just had horrendous texture pop in/loading delay. The fact that Jedi and FF7 also have this, still tell's me it's the way the engine handles texture streaming and it's being designed to be streamed with a 5400rpm drive.
    Will be very interesting to see how this is effected on the PS5

    • @SalveMonesvol
      @SalveMonesvol 4 года назад +12

      Well, it still happens with an ssd on PS4 Pro, which is inexcusable, so I'll guess that although the insanely fast ps5 drive will help you will still have instances where a character gets to touch a surface before the texture pops in.

      @@poodlemeister22314 So very true. It's one of the main reasons I opted not to put one in my launch PS4. I do however have a Seagate 1TB SSHD in there. It happens to be one of the earlier models that has the 32GB NAND cache which does appear to make a difference, especially so when I was playing Destiny 2 and GTA V a lot on it. I think Blizzard might be on to something in regards to it being designed with Mechanical drives in mind. I've played several games on PC that just can't leverage even an NVME and still take a while to load. One for example is KOTOR and while it's fast, it's constrained. There's loads of other titles out there that exemplify this.
      Here's to hoping that a PC release is down the line or it's something they can address with the PS5's vastly improved tech.

Asians prefer a more makeup, flawless look rather than the realsitic rendering used in Western games. I think FF XIV RR uses better, actually. But yes, compared to Capcom's engine or Rocksteady and the like, SE prefers style over detail.
      I don't mind graphics so much as I do the game itself, but you can tell SE doesn't care to put the same effort into setting, which is bizarre considering the fantasy aspect. Older games and RR textures are about the only consistency you see or if the graphics are B-grade like what they do with Mana series, Kingdom Hearts. Actually....I think Dragon Qeust XI does a good job with what it has, though of course fitted to an art style.
      Left Alive looked bland but the lighting effects were good, and we saw the same issue the VII remake has in FF XV (even though that had the excuse of being put together in a short period to get it released). So not sure what the excuse is here other than counting on people only focusing on trademark characters rather than the world reimagined, too.

      It's true for a lot of open-world games and games with wide open areas, where there are a lot of NPCs around or alternately a lot of interactive elements.

    I experienced the same texture issues during my work with the review. Good to see I'm not the only one.
    Btw, I noticed that some of the background were extremely flat and low polished when you can see the slums from high above, such as chapter 6 (or 7, can't remember for sure) and 15 (almost remind me of the good old pre-rendered backgrounds from the originals). Would love to hear if anyone else experienced the same issue.

      @@beetumdadd1 They do and Cerny is right. The whole problem with current-gen consoles is that they were designed with HDDs. Devs are forced to code their games with HDD in mind. So data layout on the drive, sequential (linear) and random (seek) data access are all based on HDD performance, not SSD.
      PCI-E 4.0 SSDs (like in the upcoming Xbox Series X and PS5) are much much much better at sequential and random access compared to HDD. This opens the door to completely new data streaming systems, meaning new ways to design the scope of a game.
      If you think data streaming is not a big deal in game engines and game design, I'm afraid you are mistaken. Video games are programs. Programs transform data. The faster you access the data, the more you can transform it. The Von Neumann Architecture that's been around for many decades hasn't changed. You want your data to be as close as possible and be accessed as fast as possible. That's what brought us RAM and CPU caches. I hope you won't argue about the importance of these two technologies.

    Streaming speed of quality textures has always been an issue for the Unreal Engine. Especially when you're dealing with lower end specs for consoles relative to PCs. Some of the early Gears of War games on the 360 are perfect examples. It is strange though that some of those textures, for example on the door, stay at a low res. My guess is there's a bug where where some textures aren't fully streaming in.

    • @unnoticedhero1
      @unnoticedhero1 4 года назад +7

      Let's hope it's that and can be addressed in a patch and not them rushing the game out or not giving artists enough of a global vram budget to make every object at least look like a PS4 game, some of those models and textures are worse than some PS2 games. What baffles me is that KH3 and Gears 4/5 are all UE4 and look great with minimal issues.

    • @pcgamingftw5694

      Idk, to me it seems like it is not just the textures themselves, but the RIDICULOUSLY low traingle count as well. A lot of the objects are just waaaay to pointy. Almost everything that is supposed to be round, like some tables and most notably pipes look more like octagons. Mindboggling, considering 90% of midgar is filled with pipes!
      Plus, it does not feel like some of the textures would even have a higher res model. Some, like the by now infamous apartment door I agree with, look like a streaming issue, but most others, for example on the ground, the mototrcycle at 11:14, the clutter at 12:50 appear as if even if there was a higher res model they would look at best like a bad ps3 model. Might just be my gut feeling, but a lot of them look like they just are that bad :(
      If there is one thing a cannot stand it's low res textures! The only thing I hate more is low triangle count...

    • @Shadowdane
      @Shadowdane 4 года назад +1

      I'm kinda wondering if it's a memory issue.. ran out of memory for additional high resolution textures so just had to stay with the low resolution texture? With consoles it's impossible to know as there is no way to monitor the GPU, CPU or Memory utilization.

    • @marsaurelius
      @marsaurelius 4 года назад +1

      Shadowdane Dunno how it works exactly on consoles but in PC, this is indeed a hint about a lack of Vram BUT not to the point of not going to the high res textures, if you choose to use high res textures and your Vram is not enough ( well you will notice stutter first of all ) the system uses the HDD/SSD to help which lead to this problem ( textures loding slowly but not to the point of not loading fully at all ). I’m sure they try to optimize it more on consoles but the concept should be the same I think.

      Shadow Price you know how I’m sure your premise is wrong? The fan on my PS4 Pro does not get as wicked loud on FF7 Remake as it does on RE3, not even close. Obviously it’s not a “hardware” issue as you might believe-it’s for sure an issue of either the engine (given how Horizon Zero Dawn [Decima Engine vs Unreal] plays beautifully and with way more high-res rendering) or of Square-Enix developing team not optimizing the game thoroughly enough. By the way, RE3 looks leagues better in my opinion.

      Seems to be. It doesn't seem to be a bug but a design choice at this point on Epic's part. Especially on lower specced hardware. Fallen Order does the same thing but when textures are working it looks amazing. However the fact that it doesn't happen earlier in the game makes me think some kind of settings tweak need to be done in-order to keep that from happening often. I know UE4 bases it on distance and if the bounding boxes need to be tweaked a bit to get it stream textures properly, but it could also be the amount of data they have in the town. They constantly have to keep changing texture mipmap LOD. I'm hoping there is a patch to fix this.

      I think that for higher sales the next part will be on both PS4 and PS5. Not everyone will jump directly into next gen, and SE would like to sell as many copies of the game as possible (100+ million PS4 user, higher probability that more people will buy the game, compared to several millions users of PS5, which will be new to market).
