Fun fact (not really): November 9th used to have a rape scene in it, but CoHo had to change it because there was backlash. 😬 Caleb Joseph has a really good video that talks about it: “A complete history on my feud with Colleen Hoover” Edit: tysm for the likes! I really appreciate it 💙
@@alinaschmidt7330 Yeah, I mean she didn’t really want to do it, soooo I would consider that rape. Idk, I’ve never actually read the book, I’ve just watched people (Caleb Joseph) discussing it. 😂
@@alinaschmidt7330 I’m pretty sure the main character said “stop” during an intimate moment. She said it’s because ‘she didn’t know if she wanted it or not’ or something. Colleen Hoover probably wanted to make it seem OKAY by writing that. I get that some people think that the main character wasn’t thinking when she said ‘stop’ but nooo it’s literally SA
So let me get this straight, CoHos mom was in an abusing relationship and she writes books with toxic abusive relationships and glamorizes them. I don’t understand why she does this
My opinion on collenhover. : 1. She can write good RED FLAGS. 2. She writes only red flags and romanticising it. 3. she gives her character no background. Her books include a burn scar patient( November 9) . She pulls up this history and emotion in the girl that makes us belive she has no self esteem. However that isn't the problem. Maybe fallon is just super insecure. I don't blame her. But what gets on my nerves is that throughout the book, its never touched on again. Thus, she gives information that is crucial for the story like handing out pamphlets for a concert with no date on it. Its a flat graph.
can we talk about how in November 9th they make a comment about how the main character doesn't like books with insta love and the whole book is literally insta love
The comments on this video pass the vibe check. So happy to know I’m not alone in my confusion in how everyone thinks CoHo is like the author out there 😅
The fact that you called her "Mrs. Hoover" made me laugh because that's what my non-reading boyfriend calls her. As a extreme bookworm, I often call him for nearly four hours every day (excessive, I know) and tell him about the most recent book I'd read. Well. Let me tell you, after It Ends With Us, he begged me to read more Mrs. Hoover books because he thought it was hilarious how I droned on and on about that terrible book. Safe to say, I'll never purchase another Mrs. Hoover book for myself, but if he happens to buy me one for Christmas, I'll be reading it and telling him my very, very unkind review
Somebody convinced me to read November 9 after I hated Ugly Love, promising it would be "the best romance story ever, and that it would redeem COHO to me"......... I relate to your pain in so many levels in regards of this experience. It hurts. You echoed my soul in this video. The fact that it is sold as a ROMANCE, that a person came to me and said that this story was THE BEST I honestly have no words in english portuguese or spanish (and if I spoke another language, I wouldn't be able to find a word in it too).
Sometimes I am amazed when I read such books, because then I think of the complex plots, unforgettable scenes full of emotion, and well-characterized characters that I find in ao3 fanfiction and wonder how publishers manage to publish such crap.
@@mat3372 yes???? there are so many AMAZING books out there. Here in Brazil one of coho's books was the top 1 seller of the year and that's my villain origin story T_T

I guessed the plot twist in November 9 in the first chapter 😂 the way he talked about her scars i thought was soooo suspicious .... like he wanted her to stop feeling sorry for herself so HE could move on
I was ruthlessly TRICKED into reading my second Colleen Hoover book last weekend and I literalllly felt like I needed therapy after and I had to pause midway to rant and rave to my friend for almost an hour just to make it through.
Happened the same to me but with the series of the maze runner, worst series I have ever read boring as hell but everyone loves them and I don't get it. Those books put me to sleep in 2 minutes
Caleb Joseph has a great video about his longstanding criticisms and ""feud"" with Colleen Hoover if anyone in the comments wants some more breakdowns of her writing :))
And yet the saddest thing about her books is that the covers are genuinely so pretty. I think that it's so annoying that bad books such as hers get cute covers, yet most good books have lowkey shirty ones
That's so true! I've also noticed that with Japanese books, not light novels (they have some pretty good covers). Some great Japanese thriller books have some generic, low quality stock flower photos with a Microsoft Word font on them and I'm like ??? and the book turns out to be great (example: ユージニア). I know, never judge a book by its cover, but if it didn't get the 直木三十五賞 prize I wouldn't have even considered reading it. Same can be said about books in all other languages.
I lose a few thousand braincells every time I see the girls in my class gushing over a colleen hoover book. Bestie, I know there's smut in that and you're fourteen.
likr fr tho, just got out of my wattpad phase and i thought 'why not give romance book a go?' then i saw all the hype, i was so confused so i pulled up some reviews AND HERE WE GO LMAOOO , it's crazy cuz not many girls in my class have/had wattpad so i can see why they get excited but babes pls stop idolizing coho
@@mkay2998 Yeah, there are much better popular books with smut that they can read instead. I don't even think Coho's books should be marketed as romance, except maybe Heart Bones which I surprisingly did like.
lmaoaoao same, almost any girl ik in my grade has read coho book and they liked it, heck i have this girl who made a video about toxic men but said coho ones was an exception
The biggest issue i have with the writers writing such wattpad -fanfics kinda books is that if you are publishing your work, so that people would Literally PAY to read your work, just atleast make your work worth the readers Money AND Time. Because i can literally find no difference whatsoever between a few CoHo books and the Wattpad/ao3 stuff I've read,if anything some wattpad books are even better than some of her books and EVEN HAVE A PLOTLINE FOR GODS SAKE.!! And honestly it just makes my blood boil even thinking about the fact that there are so so so many amazing writers out there who are not appreciated enough just beacuse a large mass of readers ( INCLUDING some people in their early 20's) invest in CoHo and such other writers. Also, tbh i personally feel that CoHo books are for the people who didn't go through their "Wattpad" phase in their early teens , and are thus making up for it it in their adult years by such books. Not to mention the fact that those books are literally sold as a romance genre books, but clearly contain A LOT MORE than just that. It also needs to be pointed out that just because your books has a bit of smut in it doesn't mean it is a romance book.
please, wattpad has great books, i hate that everyones saying "some". Many wattpad books have even gotten published as real books the "How To Be The Best Thirdwheel" for instance. Wattpad is where stories live and all those smut and fanfics arent real books honestly. But Wattpad is a great platform for readers and writers
what you said at the end about "if it gets people reading that's one thing, but i do think there's bigger conversations to be had" because YESSSS i love that some books/series/authors get popular online because it gets people into reading. BUT. there are WAY better things that people could be reading that DON'T normalize abuse (and are written better).
YESSSS FINALLYYYYY!!!!!!!! I’ve just read one Colleen Hoover book before and it was Ugly Love, and I never understood why everyone liked it so much but I was not wrong girl. You brought every valid point in that book 👏🏻
I haven’t fully read a Colleen Hoover book because every time I pick one up it don’t pull me in or I dnf. I’m so glad someone is calling her out on books that be so hyped for no reason. I don’t ever plan on trying to read her books ever again so I’m just going to take your word and my experience for it.
I've seen few girls in my class read those and tell me that she is a great writer and they genuinely love it, I can tell they love it because they look so excited when they tell me that, I always thought her books were not really to my liking but lately I've been concerned with what my friends have been reading
My "favourite" "funfact" about CoHo is that November 9 had a glorified SA scene that got edited out after the author got backlash for that scene. Like w h a t?!
to be completely honest, i used to really enjoy colleen hoover's books (except for ugly love, i gave that shit 1 star since the beginning). i went through a whole CoHo phase during the middle of the year, but looking back i can't believe i missed all the red flags in her writing. upon reflection, i started realizing how problematic and harmful her books were and i had to do some self reflection on why i ever enjoyed the books to begin with.

Thank You Thank You so much for saying the truth and especially highlighting the misogyny part. It is so sad to see that young teenage girls actually think that her books are romantic and loving. My foot! Similarly books like Twisted love is another hell on earth that is written to make women go against each other for stupid guy's attention but I loved your observation.
I LOVE this video. Colleen tells instead of showing. I hate when she tells us how “hot” someone is, and is trash at actually writing character development. Every page is like horrible porn acting. Total lack of subtlety.
Yes!! I read This Ends With Us - the trauma-dump trauma-driven plot upset me and made me so uncomfortable. I also hated the writing. You could not pay me to read anything else from her 🙃
Just saw my middle school classmates reading CoHo and giggling about it. For them, it must have been a GIFT FROM THE HEAVENS. Can’t wait till they mature and cringe at it 😂😂😂
This is my first video of yours, found it as I was looking for a scathing review of Hoover's books lol and im only a few minutes in but I have to say I love your editing style and the little visual elements you have throughout the video as well as the depth you go into in the reviews, im excited to watch more!
I am so glad I found this!! I thought I was the only one that couldn’t stand her books. I read Ugly Love and my friend has convinced me to give her another chance with It Ends With Is and I’m struggling to finish it 😩
Language is not toxic. Ugly love I mean. It's just bad writing. I started reading this book to see what the hype is about. I was laughing reading this. I used to read fan fic blogs that's were better written. I honestly can't believe book like this was even published
I’m sorry you had to go thru this pain 😭 I’ve never tried a CoHo book because they just don’t sound like the kinds of books I’d reach out for and this video just cements the fact I will definitely never reach out for one.
I also read November 9, DNFd it 35% in. Decided to pick up the audiobook where I left the ebook and decided to rate it 2⭐️😅. The love interest gave me the creeps and the big reveal was wrong on so many levels… So 💯% agree with your review and your decision to never read this author. 🎉❤
Honestly, I used to love Colleen’s books, but i think the thing for me is… I started reading fantasy right after, and there’s so much more description in that genre. And even HD Carlton has a lot more depth, so it’s not a romance thing. It’s just a Colleen thing. My favorites were Ugly Love, Nov 9, and Maybe Someday. Either people lack the intelligence that other books (better books) contain, or they are purely there for storylines and not the writing. For instance, in Confess, the first chapter spoke about the main character losing her virginity at 15. Like detailed, and I… dnf automatically. I think colleen is a beginner author for adults tbfh. Like when people are just getting back to reading or just starting out. By all means, you do you, but there’s so much cringe and lack of effort half the time. I will also say that I 100% believe that these books could be so good if it weren’t CoHo writing them. If there was more character development, a better range of descriptive words, more effort put into these characters where they didn’t seem so manipulative and toxic, etc. ANOTHER THING: I spent ages 15-19 in the most toxic relationship. I haven’t been in a toxic one since, I l think? But I also never went to therapy yet due to financial problems. (I am 25). So, I will admit I am a bit desensitized to these things as well, and as much as I’d like to say so, I can’t always differentiate toxic behavior. Having lived my entire teen years dating someone who would constantly put me down emotionally and mentally, it’s still hard to know when something is considered toxic, as my experience is different and my own. Same with any other victim. I still have issues in my relationships now because of this. It is hard to tell the difference sometimes in kindness and toxicity. Especially when gaslighting and manipulation is present (which I’ve come to learn a lot of CoHo books have). So, like Mel says, we can’t always blame the person for liking CoHo as most people have become desensitized as a society, but we can definitely talk about the issues present.
I've read a couple of CoHos books, and they are the books you read for thoughtlessness and sheer entertainment. You don't need to put a lot of thought or effort into her books and its easy and fast paced. That is why I think she is so popular in the first place. I enjoy that sometimes.
I agree with what you said here--especially about this COULD be decent storylines with someone else authoring them. For me, it seems like CoHo is totally not self-aware and it shows in the writing. For example, it is absolutely OK and possible, and even needed sometimes to write about manipulative, toxic relationships. But when you have your female characters just accepting this behavior from their lovers, not questioning it, and normalizing it--it sends a strange message to readers. How about some original thought from the female characters? How about a female character who chooses through character development to walk away from that type of relationship? How about subverting the narrative that every single woman ends up in a manipulative relationship in the first place? Heck, even exploring a relationship where a female is toxic and her male partner must work for personal growth would be more interesting. CoHo comes so close to the point and yet still misses it.
@@Jana-fs2qf yesss!! As long as you go in open minded and not expecting the best thing you’ve ever read (personally), they can be good for slumps because they’re quick and short!
I disagree that CoHos book are good beginner books for adults 💀 I’m sorry but no grown adult should be reading CoHo books and enjoying it lmfaoo. I can excuse teenage girls reading those books because a lot of teenagers go through a phase of reading cringey wattpad fanfiction which they soon grow out of, but adults reading CoHo books for fun gives me second hand embarrassment 💀💀
I read it ends with us, it starts with us and ugly love so far and honestly since getting into reading and actually good literature I’ve been placing those books on shelves further and further away from the GOOD books that I own, because it literally just feels disrespectful towards my good books to put miss colleen next to them on the same shelf.
It Ends With Us was okay, but I didn't like the writing style. Ugly Love was traumatizing for me. It was a little too much for me, considering that I'm a sixteen year old, but I wanted to read it and I didn't even finish it.
I read Verity and thought it was interesting. I haven’t been very interested in other CoHo books because I heard that most are toxic. I almost bought one of her "romance" books out of curiosity of the hype, but I’m glad you made this video. I now have no desire to find out what her books are about by reading them myself 🙃
Same. I rarely buy English books, but when I do, I buy them in bulk. I bought one ebook of hers to test the waters, fully intending on buying more later, and mentally defenestrated myself.
I've never had an interest in reading Colleen Hoover but after this video I am 100% sure I will never read one single line from her. I've looked up the plot twist to November 9th and man, that's terrible. I'm so sorry that you had to go through this, I really am sorry 😂
Ugly Love was the last book I read from her and I hated it. The final scene that was super sad (from his flashbacks) took me by surprise and traumatized me so much and I will never forgive her for that. Freaking warn a person!
I've read one of her books years ago. Don't remember which one but still remember that the story started with happy vibes and turned into dark and depressing one. It was so disturbing that I was forced to open a bottle of wine to get through reading it. Never again.
I read Confess this year to see whether I still liked her work (I also liked it when I was around 16 years old, just like most girls who read it right now) and I DESPISE HER WORK omg. It's so toxic and the men are THE WORST. Every time someone buys a CoHo book in my bookstore, I'm like noooooo whyyyyy 😩😩😩 there are so many books that have an amazing romance without the toxicity
Thank you for pointing out the toxicity of these "romance" books. Every time someone asks if I've read them I say no and it isn't my kind of read. Cause I would be doing the same as you in this video 🤣
thank god..finally someone like me who realizes Ugly Love is problematic. so so problamatic. I DNFed it because it was getting horrible with every line.

OKAY SOOOO I was recommended to read this book Ugly Love, in fact I did read a bit. As soon as I read the first chapter, I shut the book and threw it at my friend's face. I think in the worst chapter itself when Miles muttered "Rachel" in his sleep (I don't remember anything honestly) it was a red flag for me.
Thumbs up for the video 👍🏻 this year I was looking forward to reading colleen’s romance books I started with ugly love, then verity and finally November 9! It’s safe to say I’m not a fan and will never pick up or recommend her books. The dynamics of her main characters showcase the beginning of a typically abusive relationship. My main problem is the conclusion and the message her books send to readers, especially young vulnerable easily impressionable readers. Well done for creating this video and real analysis 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I read Verity (my first CoHo book) after seeing all the posts and videos about how everyone was loving her. I finished the book and I was upset since I hated the experience. After looking more into it, her books have a lot of red flags stuff sold as romance. I’m not about romanticizing all these. I was so uncomfortable reading Verity the entire time and that’s not what I want to feel when I’m reading. Reading is my form of escapism. I don’t want to be uncomfortable about it.
Yes, I feel you, girl. I have read 2 of her books and never again for myself. One of the ones I picked up was November 9. I hated both books I have read from here. 🖤💚🖤💚

I’ve read CoHo ‘ugly love’ when I was 18-19 (mind u not that many years ago) and at the time I didn’t mind it, but I never liked the book enough to continue with her books. Then I saw what other people had to say about her books and honestly I’m sooooo glad I did, because the negatives outweigh the positives and the undertone of abuse and toxicity in her books is revolting. I think she needs to seek professional help and reflect on how she romanticises these red flags and the massive impacts they have on her younger audiences and the ways in which they perceive love, relationships and even family dynamics. I agree wholeheartedly with everything you touched on sis! Keep at it❤
I had "Ugly Love" in my hands at B&N. Carried it around the store. Put it down and picked up "Snow Hare", "Secret History", and "The Stolen Book. " (happy with my decision to put Ugly Love back down, you saved me!) Right now, I am reading "Babel."

In defence of Colleen, she has said that the relationships in her books aren’t to be desired because they are toxic relationships but at the same time, for the life of me I don’t understand how her books are so popular, the writing just isn’t for me
She says that but in so many of her books those abusive relationships end in happily ever after and act like the abuse wasn't abuse and was okay so.. what is she trying to say..
She’s literally just write self indulgent toxic romance, people are angry because the books aren’t meant for them and don’t know they can just not read them lol

I don’t understand why she does this
For this exact same reason. Because she grew up with this kind of abuse going on in her life and this is the normal for her.

My opinion on collenhover. :
I think it was supposed to be some sort of ironic, quirky thing that failed miserably 😭😭
I think it was supposed to be ironic but it failed and came off as cringe
And Ben doesn't even love her he even f*cked his dead brothers wife
i liked it
The comments on this video pass the vibe check.
I love your comment😂
That is so cute
Please that’s so cute
Hey that's one way to bond :)
That's sooo cuteeeeeeee💖🦎
I would never forget CoHo for this line in Ugly Love: "we both laugh at our son's big balls" like wtf was that😭
Sounds sexualizsing somehow yuck.
Somebody convinced me to read November 9 after I hated Ugly Love, promising it would be "the best romance story ever, and that it would redeem COHO to me"......... I relate to your pain in so many levels in regards of this experience. It hurts. You echoed my soul in this video. The fact that it is sold as a ROMANCE, that a person came to me and said that this story was THE BEST I honestly have no words in english portuguese or spanish (and if I spoke another language, I wouldn't be able to find a word in it too).
november 9 is fucking. awful. worst book i’ve ever read and i’m so passionate about that
Sometimes I am amazed when I read such books, because then I think of the complex plots, unforgettable scenes full of emotion, and well-characterized characters that I find in ao3 fanfiction and wonder how publishers manage to publish such crap.

Seeing other people’s positive reviews on CoHo books honestly just makes me question whether we read the same book or not lol
Almost an year ago I gave it ends with us 5 stars now I will give it 2 stars. Trust the growth process
I think that it's so annoying that bad books such as hers get cute covers, yet most good books have lowkey shirty ones
exactly

I feel the smüt in AO3(and sometimes even plot) is better than coho. AO3 writers are diff breed i swear!
@@kaewasyul EXACTLY my point.!
wattpad has some good books
@@lapissalem9478 ao3 is sm better tho😭
please, wattpad has great books, i hate that everyones saying "some".
Ugly Love was my first and definitely last CoHo book omg. This book is so so bad and the “my God, Rachel” scene was just the last straw for me WTFFFF
Omg same!! My brother got it for me on Christmas cause I wanted to try her books and…never again
Same goes for me. For the hype I bought the book and it was awful.
At least you realized these things. But what's up with the girls who doesn't? They end up with the Miles's, Ben's and Dean Holder's of the world
Good on you for reflecting on yourself! And I’m glad you were able to realize it!

I LOVE this video. Colleen tells instead of showing.
I hate when she tells us how “hot” someone is, and is trash at actually writing character development.

I love your reactions/faces while reading. 😊
Does anyone feel like Mel is just so much more knowledgeable no intellectual than other booktubers? She’s so real, aware, and insightful
YES. I used to LOVE CoHo until I started reading more and realizing...yikes
I'd tell you to donate them to a library, but I'd feel really bad for the librarian and the unsuspecting readers that frequent said library. 💀
Verity is her only good book imo because it's thriller. Her romance books are dogshit.
I didn't like Verity either, so shallow in all aspects.
I read somewhere that Verity is inspired from a book named Rebecca, which is a gothic and dark themed book. Maybe you could check that out too
Because of Booktok, I was so ready to buy a good amount of her books and then I learnt. It's safe to say money was saved
Same. I rarely buy English books, but when I do, I buy them in bulk. I bought one ebook of hers to test the waters, fully intending on buying more later, and mentally defenestrated myself.

I 1000% agree with you! These books need to come with large print disclaimers and a telephone number for the nearest helpline.

Verity was my first CH book too. It was so poorly written and developed. Her female characters are pathetic and. Ot inspirational for women
“Fu*k the book, I need help” that really got me 😂❤

Keep at it❤
I hope you do an update of new books from her.
