So it’s actually 250 rolls of Portra 400 ($16 per roll to buy the film + $20 per roll scan/dev) to equal the cost of this camera (or 50 5-packs which is apparently what I calculated for). I apologize for the error, it looks like a solar flare flipped a bit on my calculations. Still not a crazy amount of film though!
Yes not that crazy. Especially if you consider that 250 rolls is 9000 shots, and that an m11 with 9000 shots retain all its resale value ! Only problem, the photos look too digital.

Maybe the M10 (and their variants) is the best digital M for your needs. You get the slim M6 body type, the good rear screen and it still has the bottom plate. And on the German used market the classic M10 is slowly going for sale for under 4000 Euros, the M10-R for roughly 5500 Euros (don’t know the prices in your region)😉
Extremely fine production as usual, GX. About "film experience", I shamelessly tape my Fujifilm X100 screen with a black, fake leather sticker. I always use OVF, then I only see the photographs when the files have been transferred to my laptop. If I want to go extreme, I put a 1GB SD card to my X100 --that's only enough capacity to fit about 37-40 RAW files, roughly the same as 1 roll of film and I have 5 piece of 1GB cards (with my snail pace of photography, it's more than enough for a week of traveling). My X100 only cost me US$300, about the same as 20 rolls of Kodak Vision + ECN2 processing cost on my country. 20 rolls = 720 pictures and my X100 have been taking tens of thousands picture for about 4 years. You are miscalculating the cost of Portra vs Leica M11, but you are absolutely right about one thing: nowadays, shooting film is for rich people.

Could you share the calculation you mentioned in the section "Film is for Rich People" The M11 is about say USD9000 since you mentioned it is below USD10,000. Film - Portra 400 35mm (shoot, dev and scan) per roll = USD20 you mentioned at 50 rolls it would be close to the price of the M11 USD20 x 50 = USD1000. How is that close to USD9000? These videos are truly superb! Loved my time testing out the M11 as well. The 50 rolls of Portra calculation took me by surprise. Puts things in perspective for volume film shooters.
Thanks for watching! So I realized my math was off a bit. I accidentally was using the price of the 5-pack of film so it’s actually 250 rolls, but still that isn’t a crazy amount.

@@GxAce what's that got to do with anything? Sony is a big conglomeration selling mass market consumer items like TVs and game consoles. It sells cameras based on spec. How is that not the antithesis of what's being said here or, more to my point, what Leica is all about? It's a souless instrument that'll just be replaced by the next iteration.
Nope you didn’t miss something, I did. I accidentally took the price of the 5-pack and forgot to divide it by 5. Should be 250 rolls, still not a crazy amount, but I’m still rather annoyed I let that slip. Thanks for letting me know.
Loved this video but can't say I agree that this camera, or any digital camera, can give you the film experience. Its not all about the look of the results or the tactile feel of the camera. For me, and I'd say many others, the process of not being able to know your results instantly and having the time between shooting and developing is very important and shooting film is a way for me to disconnect from the digital experience which makes me feel more present and calm. On top of that, the cost barrier you brought actually makes me take far less photos which I think forces me to be a lot more critical of what I am looking at, and taking photos of, which I believe has made me a better photographer overall. I shoot both film and digital but the process of the two is totally different and for me yields completely different results. Love your videos, thank you for all the work you put into them!
I have had my M10 for a year now, before I had different Fujifilms. The past weekend I got a chance to try the Leica SL2 and when I had my fujis I couldn’t complain about an EVF, but after 1 year with my M10 I couldn’t use the great EVF in the SL2. I couldn’t focus my Voigt 35mm Ultron with focus peaking, I disliked that the display where BnW just because I had BnW settings for the JPEGs. I realized I looked more at the focus peaking and all the settings in the EVF than the actual object. It was a barrier between me and the world. I’ve heard M-shooters talk about this before I bought my M10 and I thought it sounded a bit silly/fanboy-ish.. But after a year with no EVF, I can’t say something else. And the dials … physical dials that tells the settings. I don’t need 6 FN-buttons, I don’t need any FN-button actually. To see the settings together on a screen is way more fuzzy than look at the specific dial you’re interested in. That past weekend learned me alot! The M is THE camera for me, it’s ridiculous how the camera manufacturers hunting perfect EVF:s and AF system for all categories of cameras when Leica made the perfect one almost hundred years ago 🤷♂️
this and Camera Conspiracies are some of my favourite camera channel lol... the story telling is just different from your average 1million - 10 mill subscriber channel
ffs over 6000$!!??? Without a lens!? I'm aching to get myself a fun small form-factor digital camera but all the ones on YT seem to cost the Earth especially nowadays. I'm genuinly not sure that any camera is worth 6000. I love to build powerful gaming PCs and even those don't cost more than 2000.
I won't even watch these videos on my phone because your content is an experience. On mobile now saving for later. Just found your videos like a week ago but you've already inspired me as a creator more than anybody else I've seen in like a decade. Good work man
No one on RUclips is making content like you… period. Your videos are a joy to watch. From the color grading to sound design and music they truly are on another level!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Let me guess without even watching the video: The $10,000 camera in question is an overpriced Leica?! Speaking of Leica, didn't Leica just tried to sell a $300 FILM camera for $13,000?! Literally a film camera that can be made from scratch with CNC machines in like 15 minutes out of $50 maximum $100 worth of materials, FOR $13,000! Truly shameless and pathetic. Leica is a joke for people who have more money than brains.
@@GxAce I'm literally a Lead Engineer/CNC machine operator specialized in Okumas machines. We produce parts for dental microscopes, including glass element refining (we even partnered with Zeiss on multiple occasions) and MBO/hardware input layout frames for the keys/buttons/switches on the microscopes, as well main body frames. We also produce parts and main frames for various different medical and surgical machinery... Long story short... It takes me 10-15 min to draw and calculate everything in F360 or SolidWorks and then 2min to print the papers for everyone. I then program all three of my Okuma machines and do 2 CAD runs to see if everything is ready to go and that takes me another 15-20 minutes... Then when everything is ready, I put the pieces in the machines and the entire frame for a $85,000 dental microscope is done in under 1-2 hours total... We're talking about a tiny camera here, that is highly likely made from 2 separate pieces of magnesium/aluminum/plastic, whichever it is, I can BOTH program and let the machine make both frames in under 10 minutes each. Especially on my Okuma 5ax work center - and that's with grinding and polishing included. It takes longer for me to input the commands than it does for the machine to make a piece... That's how fast these camera bodies are done. Same for all other parts of the camera. No more than $50-100 worth of material is spent on making one camera body for a FILM CAMERA that has literally no tech inside it. A god damn flagship Samsung phone costs $343 to manufacture, there is no way in hell that a FILM CAMERA costs more than $100-150 to manufacture. That camera should cost $500-$600 not $13,000!!!! And even $500 is too much!
If it is so easy to build an alternative but same quality M mount rangefinder film camera for under 500 dollar, please do it! I’ll be one of the first happy customers 😊
Portra prices and lab prices are not normal. Bulk load vision 3 for $5 a roll and develop it yourself for $1. No now you are looking at more like 2,000 rolls of film to equal this price. By the time I do that these should be 1/8th the price
Wonderful work as always! Have you ever considered mixing your videos in 5.1? I feel like your style lends itself to a surround mix, especially all the music, and RUclips recently started supporting 5.1 on Android TV and Apple TV. Maybe more, but that's all I know of.
@@GxAce If that’s something you want to try (because, if someone is absolutely mad when it comes to production quality, it’s you!), you can check out a VST Plugin called “Dear VR Monitor” it allows you to monitor 5.1 setups (and higher) binaurally through headphones. I don't like the price. It's expensive for no reason. I can get behind the idea of a simple yet elegant tool, but one that's so expensive, sorry there's no way I can
I guess this is why some musicians love the cult-classic OP-1 vs a computer running a DAW - the limited but tactile experience really just inspires you to actually make things rather than fiddle with settings. Then again, I've never experienced either, but must be pretty cool either way.
Maybe I'm a normie when it comes to lieca cameras but what exactly justifies the insane price tags they have? Don't get me wrong it looks like a really great and top of the line "minimalist" camera and those photos were incredible, but still. Ten. Thousand. Dollars. Great video as always man. I like the IR vibes as well.
Leica is Rolex vibes. Tells the time no better than a Casio but watch nerds love to talk about the mechanical movement and live in their own little world
Essentially since they are the only option in the the manual focus rangefinder full frame market, they can charge whatever they want. What really surprises me is that there has yet to be any competition. The Pixii camera is the first but it’s not full frame and even more niche.
@@kistovisback damn bro, you're really pissed off about people you don't know, minding their own business and enjoying a camera. It was a technical question I asked, not an insult towards GX or Lieca. Be still, there's nothing to be angry at.

Bla bla bla. All I hear is "I don't know what to do with my money and make videos to justify awful purchases", or "I'm really bored and I can only get satisfaction by buying expensive cameras". C'mon, man, go shoot film instead! Medium format, 35mm, you name it, you can buy good cameras, lenses and loads of film with this money... There's a lot of beautiful and cheap film cameras still available and guess what? They're fun to use and produces film results! Or maybe you could use this money to buy a Fuji or Hasselblad medium format... But all this hype and smoke and neon about insanely overpriced Leicas and Fuji APS-Cs...
We've all seen and heard about the hysteria and online panic when the M11 came out, as in the first early batch to leave Germany. More than a few duds escaped the factory and never should've passed *quality control* - these things happen regardless of price, I'm sure it was just an early batch issue but there's no escaping for those unfortunate few that it would've taken the sheen and shine off the $$$$$ purchase..
@@GxAce The two problems that I read about were a faulty rangefinder assembly and the other was - a dead main board as in the thing refused to switch on at all, nothing to be done by the end user.
Absolutely! That’s the thing with cameras these days, they all take exactly the same photo. What differentiates them in my opinion is what the experience is like using them! All cameras produce the exact same image, or near enough that it really doesn’t matter anymore.
About the "50rolls of portra400" calculation tho, it doesn't add up... that'll be $200 per roll including development and scan 😂 which is roughly 4times the reality.
I will buy a digital M Leica when the body has the same external dimensions as the M3 M2 .. 👌 (I will never stop using film. It is my medium and I use it in all formats up to 8x10 inch. DIY Processing saves an enormous amount of money, by the way. .. and the controls I have can NOT be replocated by digital imaging.)
Guys, I am really seriously planning to buy one and only one thing from cons I heard in a review while ago was that the startup delay of M11 is about 4 seconds which can eventually mean a lost picture. Can someone refer on this and was this fixed yet? Thanks.
I agree with all you said but let’s be honest. 10k for a digital camera is as much absurd of a price as 3k for a 30 yo M6. For an average person, a hobbyist, Leica prices are absurd. You can’t justify that unless you’re making a living out of photography.
Money aside. I still don't think any digital M has come close to beating the M3. Even if I have 10K, I will still pick my Leica M3 over this 8 days of the week.
Great video.... 50 rolls of Portra 400 @ $20 per roll is not $10,000. It's $1000. now if you broke it down like this... * 1 roll of Portra 400 35mm is $20 locally for me * To Develop that roll at the store it's $10 or $7 club price which I get THAT IS $30 to purchase and develop 36 images not even including tax or whatever. 1 Roll is $30 - 50 Rolls is $1500. Yeah your 50 rolls or 1800 images or 150 images a month is about $1500 annually. Unless I'm a huge idiot and or have been drinking too much whiskey I don't know how you came up with $10,000. I shoot with a Hasselblad 500CM and Canon 1n for my film cameras and I agree though film prices are just getting out of control. That is even if you nail all your shots focus and exposures correctly. I still like shooting my Canon 1n for the AF, and Light meter functions and it uses all EF lenses but I considered selling the 500cm just for the fact that Digital is much less expensive. I could sell the 500CM and get a Used GFX50s/r or Hasselblad X1D and a lens for what I sell the 500 for. I would get insane color depth, massive resolution and can fill up a memory card and have a preview of what I'm capturing. Sure film has a certain look esp with MF but at what cost.
I just did the math. It would take even less rolls to reach 10k with Portra 400 prices shooting up. Film is really expensive. Ok that makes me feel abetter about selling my M6 TTL to help fund for the M11. lol. The Fuji GFX also becomes a very viable alternative to film cameras as well. Esp if you use it the same way as a film camera - the crappy AF (for the 50s/50r ) has no impact.
This is the perfect example of brand loyalty. This camera is handicapped and that's great for some people bc of personal preference but that doesn't mean it should cost $10,000. Obviously supply and demand is a huge factor on the pricing but lets call a spade a spade. Ppl are paying >$2000 for the camera and $8000+ for the brand and it's heritage. Great video though. Love your production!
I think it would have made sense for Leica to design these cameras to be upgradable, given what they cost and how quickly sensors and electronics become obsolete. Maybe every 3-4 years they could offer an upgrade package - you send in the camera, for, say, 2500 USD they will install a new sensor and electronics.
I refuse to call what you make "videos". To me, they’re video essay/short film hybrids. But while "video" is technically the correct term for the medium, it falls very short of conveying your creativity and dedication to your craft that makes each of your uploads a uniquely inspiring experience. I’m amazed yet again.
10,000USD is only for the body, get 2 more Leica lenses and you're talking about 20k! (unless you attach voigtlanders or other vintage lenses) BTW great video! love the post-production!
My heart skipped a beat when I heard 50 rolls? I've shot and had scanned/developed 30 rolls during the past few months and was like "Was I more than halfway to an M11?!?!". Glad to see the correction which immediately made me exhale a sigh of relief.
How you anyone have fun with a 10,000 camera? Imagine dropping it? Leicas are way overpriced for what they are. Kudos, though, to Leica for making people think otherwise.
leica is not for photographers anymore. this iconic brand became a business for nostalgic persons who never experienced film photographies and think you need a legend in your hand to do black and white digital pictures.......end of the game for leica........btw, thank you kodak
I read the dpreview of the M8 and I think it’s said better there than anywhere else, for me at least. For me, M cameras are not how how it feels to take the photo, it’s that it makes you choose how the photo is made every shot. You choose what to focus on, the depth of field vs the shutter speed. You have to think about what to focus on and what to expose for and pick. Even focusing on a manual SLR is more wishy-washy as you focus the entire image until it looks right without selecting a specific point to focus on.
Great video, beautiful and artistic. But very difficult to watch, can never finish in one go. Makes me very sad and depressed. Lol. Buy keep up the good work!!!
I legit used to get Kodak gold 200 for £1 per roll, ilford hp5 for £3.50 around 2010, used to develop it and scan it at college. Film prices now are utterly insane.
Hey GX, great video and channel. Sub’d a few days ago. Question: who’s the artist and what’s the title of the song at the end of this video? I would like to pay them for their music, as well as have the whole song to listen to. Thanks!
I mean... anyone shooting that much film might be developing yourself. ought to be even. that said. better than both of those* is like... a sony 6400 used or fuji or something. *measuring on price alone

50 rolls of Portra 400 scanned for 20 bucks equal in total to around 2000 dollars. Did I miss something ?
50x20 is 1000 not 2000. I also don’t get the message in the video. I think he missed a 0. It’s more like 500 rolls
I was going to comment the same 😂.
Considering 500 rolls, you'll shoot for many many years....
@@themonsir1 I counted 40 x 50 (20 for the dev and high res scan, and 20 for the roll of portra 400 itself). 2000.
Nope you didn’t miss something, I did. I accidentally took the price of the 5-pack and forgot to divide it by 5. Should be 250 rolls, still not a crazy amount, but I’m still rather annoyed I let that slip. Thanks for letting me know.
I am always BLOWN AWAY at the quality of your videos, the audio, the editing, the photos, the lighting, everything is perfect about all of your vids.
The M11 is a great performer, but for the entrance level the M240/M-P240 are superb too.
Totally agree... The weirder the camera is the more fun it is to use!
Your production quality is O U T O F T H I S W O R L D!! Amazing. Thank you for literally going all out for us.
This is quickly becoming my favorite youtube channel.
your storytelling is insane!!!!
Thanks so much, Justin! Now I just need to make actual stories and not just gear reviews hahah ;)
I was wondering when you would go Leica. There's no turning back now :)
this and Camera Conspiracies are some of my favourite camera channel lol... the story telling is just different from your average 1million - 10 mill subscriber channel
The amount of work into your videos... Wow
Makes sense. Buy a $9K camera to take photos of your room and abandoned door frames.
Seems to make sense to me.
ffs over 6000$!!??? Without a lens!? I'm aching to get myself a fun small form-factor digital camera but all the ones on YT seem to cost the Earth especially nowadays. I'm genuinly not sure that any camera is worth 6000. I love to build powerful gaming PCs and even those don't cost more than 2000.
1:33 absolute banger of a shot.
The music on this one 😍Are any of these public/available to stream?
Perhaps try watching the video first. Also machining a camera is a lot harder than you put on. Source: I am a machinist.
I am crying, its so good.
Portra prices and lab prices are not normal. Bulk load vision 3 for $5 a roll and develop it yourself for $1. No now you are looking at more like 2,000 rolls of film to equal this price. By the time I do that these should be 1/8th the price
Bulk loading isn’t for everyone.
This is the proof that RUclips's algorithm does not value quality, but quantity.
This is such a fun and refreshing take on the camera review format. Agreed, it’s more about the experience than the tech.
I’m glad you think so! :D
I need to do robot-man voice for my videos…. Great job buddy!!
Hahah. Thanks, Take!
Wonderful work as always! Have you ever considered mixing your videos in 5.1? I feel like your style lends itself to a surround mix, especially all the music, and RUclips recently started supporting 5.1 on Android TV and Apple TV. Maybe more, but that's all I know of.
Thanks so much! I’d love to but I don’t have a setup to actually monitor 5.1
@@GxAce If that’s something you want to try (because, if someone is absolutely mad when it comes to production quality, it’s you!), you can check out a VST Plugin called “Dear VR Monitor” it allows you to monitor 5.1 setups (and higher) binaurally through headphones.
Your productions must be one of three channels that makes me actually comment on stuff like that. Glad to have found you!
I don't like the price. It's expensive for no reason. I can get behind the idea of a simple yet elegant tool, but one that's so expensive, sorry there's no way I can
@@Jajajajanee don't like those either. Expensive for no reason
Tells the time no better than a Casio but watch nerds love to talk about the mechanical movement and live in their own little world
Overrated and overpriced.
Certainly the build quality is top notch. Beyond that, just the experience of using them.
You labeled the opening 30 seconds as “cinematic garbage”. Seriously, it’s anything but. This particular opening had a real Blade Runner 2049 feel to it. Absolutely LOVE your work. I really don’t care about cameras but really enjoy your content. Amazing.
this is BEAUTIFUL! what lens/filter were you using to get the flares at 2:12????
Thanks! All of the B-roll in this video was shot on the Bausch and Lomb Baltar 35mm T2.5 from Zero Optik. Its an awesome cinema lens from the 1930's. The A-roll was shot on the Helios 44-2
@@GxAce zero optiks damn, so completely rehoused? That is beautiful
possible to create some videos with other contents rather than just camera gears? Your video editing work is a master piece, such a waste for just introducing the camera equipments. love the cinematic feels, love the Chinese elements, love the bgm, love everything, please, create some videos for other contents.
I definitely will! Keep watching and you will see some cool stuff in the future! Thanks for watching!!
seeing a GxAce video pop up on the feed is the highlight of my day
Incredible as always. Do you have a favorite lens for your M?
Thanks! My favorite currently is the Contax Zeiss 45mm f2 that I have converted to m-mount. Such an amazing lens, originally from the Contax G system.
Insane as always!
Might I ask what holographic fan projector you use for the Patreon segments? I love the cheaper look of the projection and was wondering if that was created naturally or if the protection was made to look like that?
Lol. Must be your first video on my channel huh?
@@GxAce Sorry for all the hate, youtube keeps recommending you to me and I've already watched some of your videos, it's just annoying.
Interesting! What were the defects exactly?
@@GxAce The two problems that I read about were a faulty rangefinder assembly and the other was - a dead main board as in the thing refused to switch on at all, nothing to be done by the end user.
Had the Leica m8 for some years and discovered that my pictures look the same weather I shoot fuji, Canon or Leica.
I addressed the miscalculation in the pinned comment 🤣
@@GxAce ah I see it now 😂 somehow it's not showing up top in the comment section
Whispering overlaid on noise that overpowers it is not the way to present information to me! Turned it off at one minute!
It’s hard to hear this comment over all the noise
I will buy a digital M Leica when the body has the same external dimensions as the M3 M2 .. 👌
(I will never stop using film.
Thanks.
Hi Luke - I have one, def not 4 seconds. Also the stand by power is great on it
@@builtbytitan Thanks!
What's with the voice distortion, feels a little out of place on an anti-tech review...
I know right?
Which lens do you use for those macro shots? 🤔
Looks insane 👀
I used both the Helios 44-2 with extension tubes and the Nikkor 55mm 2.8.
fun to use but pretty?? would you use an uggo as long as you're having fun?
For sure!
The Alexa Mini LF is a 60k camera without autofocus tho
Indeed it is!
You forgot to add the 10k lens.
Hahah. I was mostly using a $500 lens for this review.
full disclosure: were you in any way shape or form endorsed or compensated in any way by Leica or anyone affiliated with it?
Nope! I wish I were hahah.
@@GxAce thanks.
I agree with all you said but let’s be honest. 10k for a digital camera is as much absurd of a price as 3k for a 30 yo M6. For an average person, a hobbyist, Leica prices are absurd. You can’t justify that unless you’re making a living out of photography.
You deserve more views
Money aside. I still don't think any digital M has come close to beating the M3. Even if I have 10K, I will still pick my Leica M3 over this 8 days of the week.
Honestly, I'm not a fan of the design. I really enjoy the lines of vintage cameras and this one is just a little too flat and dull, IMO.
Funny you talk about film and the prices. I added what I have used the past 3 years and I literally told myself I'm selling my film cameras.
I llike the future, so i watch this channel to lern about Photographie.
I am always amazed at the way your videos are made. They put me in a kind of trance. Fantastic. Please keep it up!
50 rolls at $100 a pack of 5 = $1,000 and then developing and scanning all 50 rolls is another $1,000. That's only $2,000. Not $9,000.
Indeed, I pointed out my miscalculation in the pinned comment.
This channel is the antidote to the horde of camera tubers dropping their videos for the latest camera on embargo day.
Great video.... 50 rolls of Portra 400 @ $20 per roll is not $10,000. It's $1000.
now if you broke it down like this...
* 1 roll of Portra 400 35mm is $20 locally for me
* To Develop that roll at the store it's $10 or $7 club price which I get
THAT IS $30 to purchase and develop 36 images not even including tax or whatever.
1:33 absolutely love that shot. Na all of them, I love all of them.
Thanks!! :D
Have you ever wondered why pro's don't use them?
Your style of video is fucking grandiose and i love it.
The man had me convinced, forking out 10000 is actually not a bad deal for a small camera.
How you anyone have fun with a 10,000 camera? Imagine dropping it? Leicas are way overpriced for what they are. Kudos, though, to Leica for making people think otherwise.
I love that picture of the Sears Tower through a window. Amazing shots!
leica is not for photographers anymore. this iconic brand became a business for nostalgic persons who never experienced film photographies and think you need a legend in your hand to do black and white digital pictures.......end of the game for leica........btw, thank you kodak
I love that it's 5 minutes before we see a Leica lens. But I also prefer Zeiss glass so maybe it's just me.

Coming back for old content from GXACE. I tell myself that his busy with another masterpiece, cant wait for the next video.
Hello, grat video! How is your experience with the Contax G 45mm f/2? compare with a 50mm summicron or 50mm nokton for example.
I ordered the HASSELBLAD X2D 100megapixel , medium format . Try it and than you reconsider the Leica
50 rolls of Portra, assuming a high $20 cost per roll, plus another $20 for dev+scan only comes out to $2k. Am I missing something?
