You know, The experience for me hasn't been so good with my M11. I've had to send it back twice for repairs of the same problem. The screen went dead on it. After getting it back from the first time I sent it in, 5 minutes latter it went dead again. It's now 2 months with out my camera. I've only owned it for 5 months. I'm hoping to get it back without any issues. I love the shooting style of a rangefinder camera. Back in the late 90's I had a M6 and loved it! And I regret ever selling it. Great video as always!
The M11 has been an issue since it came out. I wouldn’t touch it. The M10R is still being sold new. Get that. Sell that M11 as soon as it’s back. The problems won’t stop.
Minimalist here, from my 1932 Barnack through M3, M6 and M10R. When I bought the M10R two years ago I bought the EVF with it, I used it four or five times then it went back in the box.
😈😈😈If thou succumbest to the temptations of obscenely rich Americans' private jets and Porsches, verily shalt thou also succumb to their favorite piece of photo jewelry. Yes, the people who use their Ms mostly with an EVF would be better off photographically using an SL-series camera (or even, gasp, a different brand) but for them being seen with the M is all about looks, innit?... a Q3 isn't a bad stand-in, but an SL is just too big and blobby to be truly stylish. Having said that, I would agree that for the person who has genuine application for a digital rangefinder camera, the M11 is the one that makes the most sense to buy. (I love my Pixii A2572 but the range/viewfinder and lens-mounting flexibility just aren't in the same league.) Still, your observations re electronic-shutter distortion are a bit off-putting. I have a lot of experience with electronic shutters, on the Pixii (which has no mechanical shutter at all) and on various Fujifilm cameras, and normally the only time you'd expect to see that much distortion is with fast panning or fast-moving subjects... it's VERY puzzling in photos like your examples, which seem to show subjects that are almost completely stationary. To me it looks like a readout-timing issue and would merit sending the camera back with a terse "WTF?" note.
Thanks! Don't worry i'm staying with my M240 for now. We think so alike regarding the "photo jewelry aspect, say for celebs etc. I've already scripted the next 2 videos and you'll see me cover this :) Electronic shutter - the lifeguard might be weird geometry - POV and the camera on leg shot was them moving and me moving so that likely is ES. The car we the lens distortion.. but yes more "odd photos" than I'm used to seeing.
Not only size but I’ve decided no more ASPH lenses for me. The perfect daily carry lens is between the size of a v4 35mm Summicron and the 50 Summicron v5. All lenses I love are non-ASPH lenses. They’re compact and they give you a beautiful image. Now lenses have to be super corrected and big. They just keep getting bigger and bigger. See the new 50 Summilux. It even looks ugly. Asphericalized and super APOchromatized to see every single pore from wide open to f22 to give you the most perfect image ever in history. It’s absolute insanity. I lasted a couple of months with the APO-Lanthar 50 and sold it. It’s like listening to a one-note song. Somehow RUclips got into people’s heads and now everyone thinks “well if I have a 60MP camera I HAVE to have the most super perfect lenses because the other lenses won’t “resolve my sensor” and I’m missing out. Who puts these stupid ideas into peoples heads? I have an M-11 so I have to now go out and buy all these new lenses too! I have to resolve my sensor. 😅 Craziness. Leica M’s were always designed to be small portable things. And they were never supposed to be in a spec race. Ah well. As for the M11, I personally don’t like it. I like my M10R Black Paint. Brass. Beautiful. I don’t care for the new features. The battery I just put one in my pocket. The M10R is my last camera body. I don’t really care about cameras anymore. It does everything I need it to do. The only one upgrade that I would’ve cared to see was the mechanical shutter to have 1/8000. I think that’s a better upgrade than an ES. When I go out is my M10R BP with the v5 50 Cron and that’s it. Nothing on my camera. I use a pouch when I keep it in the car. Not even a bag. If I bring a bag to travel I use a wrist strap. I also put an extra battery and a lens cloth in my pocket and off I go. Also the 40MP color sensor in the M10R is a pretty special sensor only found on that particular camera. It’s beautiful and I think 40MP is the perfect compromise for image size, file size and cropability. I don’t know when I will need a 60MP file. 🤷🏻♂️ I’m aware of the new off sensor meter. I don’t care for that either. I understand about this 60MP Sony sensor may be more color accurate. Again. Don’t care. It’s the same about the lenses. They all have their unique quirks and it’s about trying it slowly and see which quirks align with yours. Not about what is the most perfect. Because we aren’t perfect and the camera and images you make should be a reflection of your own imperfections.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I was about to purchase a v3 but I read it suffers from focus shift and that will bother me because i shoot at f4-f8 most of the time. I’m afraid when it comes to 35 I’ll be back at the same thing with the 28mm. Just get the Voigtlander version. 😀 without using even the brand new 35ASPH version I get the 35f2 Ultron is just as good for thousands less.
A brilliant and well thought out comment - you should be a reviewer. I also feel they peaked with the M10r and m10m which is also awesome. The lenses are what make leica special and there are an awful lot out there to enjoy....
Thank you for your always informativ and entertaining videos. I must although correct you opinion if one uses 75% of the time an EVF the SL would be a better choice. I'm using at least 75% of the time an EVF but use it more as a waist level tool like the Hasselblad 500 Series. I find the lower Perspektive for my style of photography better. The adjustable EVF is much more flexible than the fixed viewfinder of the SL2......an the M11 is much smaller to carry around.
Thanks! ..and for the great point regarding the EVF. For those using it like a WLF it will be better than the SL series as you mention, and smaller. Nice.
Nice review. My journey into Leica started with a bargain SL which objectively is superb in every way and in my opinion is better built than the M11 and even not the original SL EVF is way better than the M11’s unit. However, I just had to have an M11 which is fabulous and special in a way that only an M can be. The EVF being tilt able is also very useful. I tend to use the camera without the EVF with a 50mm f1.2 Nokton most of the time. With the light black body it balances nicely and is still quite compact. The battery life is fantastic.
Good video Matt, I bought a M10 and Now a M11, because I what the simple range finder operation, compared with Sony. I also use a Zeiss 50mm F2 with it (plus other lenses).
Super! Glad you made it to Vegas for an up close and personal look at the American dream. San Diego is great, and better to my view. I have noticed some wonkiness with the electronic shutter on the X2D also. Not quite the same and much more pronounced at low shutter speeds. Solution for me is to just use the XCD 55V. Your review of the M11 as the first real improvement on the M9 got my attention. That says a lot. Sensor performance would be the key here. I like color so my needs are different than yours in that. But, as usual, a superb, thoughtful, erudite and professional review. I always enjoy what you post. All the best. Vegas, yikes! LOL
SL2 and SL2s have in-body image stabilization and autofocus too if necessary (e.g. low-light or using longer telephoto lenses), but the M11 has still an edge in terms of sensor rendering
Aside from the hype: As you said many times before, the lens makes the picture, not the camera body. I couldn't care less about the Sony 60Mp sensor, the battery lasting a 1000 images (when was the last time you shot 1000 images in one setting?!) and the charging cable like on my phone. Im also not happy about the many reviews stating the freezing issues and other recurrent software glitches. This camera isn't ready yet.
I'm definitely a minimalist guy, but I'm also a 50mm shooter, and that's why I miss my M8... there's very few decent, compact 50mm lenses, whereas there are some great compact 35 f2.0's, which crop to approx. 50mm on the M8. With the M11, I wish the crop modes would change the rangefinder patch - then I could run in 1.3x crop and I think I'd be extremely happy! I'm still very happy with my M11, as it produces colours and files closest to my M8/M9 (I never got on with the colours from the M10). YMMV, naturally! I use my M11 with a Zeiss Planar 50, which is not ideally compact. I tried the latest Voigtlander 50 1.5 as a compact option, but the focus ring is far too stiff for my shooting style. The Summarit 2.4 is fine, but I found it mechanically very sloppy. If I needed to use the EVF all the time, I wouldn't have an M camera. For me, the beauty of a true rangefinder is in the unique and simple viewfinder experience, but people have any number of valid reasons to feel differently.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom That would be amazing! I used to have a 5cm collapsible summicron on my M9 and am waiting to find a decent copy to try on the M11.
I think, or better, I know I don't agree for several reasons. First of all using the Noctilux for general shooting is nuts, second, the electronic shutter is abysmal, horror, third, if 40 MP is not enough you're just out of you mind. A Cron 50mm will do the trick anytime, or a 35mm, forget the behemoth Noctilux for sure. Fourth, the price of the M11 compared to other cameras with the same specs. At least the M10 brings something to the table, the M11 doesn't. The M11 is the "Leicaflex" syndrome of Wetzlar for this new era in photography.
Not arguing, just asking: what does the M10 bring to the table that the M11 does not, other than less shutter lag (discussed elsewhere in comments)? I realize that the difference between 40mp and 60mp is less than it sounds in terms of actual output size, and the M11's electronic shutter mode certainly looks pretty dreadful based on Matt's badly skewed sample photos (although I've got a hunch that his benefactor's camera is defective) but most people probably won't use the electronic shutter most of the time. Otherwise, what does the M10 offer that the M11 does not?
I have the Leica M11 and it’s amazing indeed. I also own 12 other mirrorless cameras which cost me a fraction of the M11 price and Have 20X the features of the M11. Yet I choose the M11 when possible every time. Is it perfect? NO. I wish it had an EVF to be honest with you, IBIS and a few other things. But still love it over tons of tech every time. Not worrying about screwing ND filters in and out is worth all the money IMO. A reason why I never pulled the trigger in any prior M mirrorless. And while the Noctilux is big, and may not be your EDC lens, it’s a way better option for portrait and low light best compared to pretty much any lens out there. I don’t understand the fact of people talking down the price of Leicas. Yeah I wish they were free! If you have worked your hard to be able to afford a Leica what is the issue with it. Call it flex, heritage or just particular preference there are choices out there to suit pretty much every budget and need. Great Job as usual Matt.
@@jlwilliams Good question, for me it's a bit different as I shoot the M10M and I use vintage glass. To answer here would be to long but I see your point.
@@GastonShutters Agree, I don't care about price, we worked for it. And the Noctilux for portrait and low light sure. And be assured, I don't talk down Leica cameras, I have several ;-)
60mp is important to me because I have the freedom to do large prints , or crop in. Together with APO ASPH, high resolution sensor plus high resolving Lens is the future. M10 doesn’t have that flexibility.
For me part of the buzz around being a photographer has always been about the gear. I was using Hasselblads & a Leica M6 back in my film era up until 2001. Those Blads were the absolute pinnacle for me, I loved the entire process, from loading the backs to pressing the shutter. Practical & profit motivated considerations resulted in completely ditching all my film cameras, I was using the Canon DSLR system up until the 1DS MK2. It was less about the camera then and more about the pixels... image quality and making fine art prints on my large format Epson printer. I did own the M8 & M9 for a short period as well, but it came at a time where I was about to quit the industry. When I closed my studio in 2012, I turned my back on photography, selling everything. Photos were taken with my phone camera only. However, in a moment of reawakening about 2 months ago, I decided it was time to renew my passion for photography. So now, I have the M11P, 50mm Voigtlander Lanthar APO, Summicron 75 APO, and my favourite lens the Leica Summilux 28/1.4. Yea the M11P with the 28 Lux. Now that is a seriously nice combo. Back to how I felt in the Blad era.
Great to hear your back to your photography Paul and nice setup to kick it off! I'm reviewing the latest 2 fast 28s but you probably have the best already!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I’ll be interested to read the review. The Summilux looks good to me. From what I’ve read, it seems there isn’t a 28mm that betters it!
Matt - are you going to cover the Visoflex in detail in your M11 vs Q3 video - interested to know what the real world use case for it is? At what focal lengths or apertures does it really make a noticeable difference to focussing? Thx
Began my RF journey back in 1994 with a M6 Classic, Summicron 35mm & 90mm quickly followed by a 50mm. Acquired a 2002 M6 TTL to allow for color and flash shooting while the M6 was used for B/W T-Max 400 shots without having to wait 36 exposures. 6 months ago I « traded » my X1 for a M11 to which I added a Summicron 28mm Asph. Haven’t shot my M6s since… Go figure!
I find myself happiest with a silver M11 + 35 APO Summicron. Just small and light enough to carry along the whole week while on travel. I can always use the LCD for close-focus work when necessary.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I would be a little jumpy carrying around a $17,000+ camera/lens around my neck in public but hey: to each his/her own...lol...
The electronic shutter doesn't work well if anything in the frame is moving. You get weird distortions. Handy if you absolutely need to be silent, but in every other occasion, I would use the mechanical shutter.
Mr. Leica, International man of mystery and photographer to the stars. And I still want my MP back, it's the "click" and wind on that I liked, slow, deliberate movements, a muscle memory, that can't be replicated. I'm getting all nostalgic now for me gravel pit outside T'Barnsley, we envied the neighbors, they had Leica's, we only had Nikon. "We're having none of that fancy pant's oooohhh look at me Leica stuff in this gravel pit" My father used to say, "You'll have Nikon and like it" It was tough in those days, good job I didn't tell him about my MP then.🤫🤫
Interesting analysis. Thanks for sharing. Perhaps if you have to travel, a good choice might be the Noctilux 1.2 50mm and the Leica M 11. It's a lighter set than the 0.95 and you have a bit more bokeh than the Summilux, and probably more than the good enough times.
Thank you, yes the 0.95 is not a travel lens. The owner just had it on the camera when I tested it. I would opt for a smaller wider lens but the 1.2 is a nice suggestion vs the Lux.
I’ve gone through this thought process, too. I think summicrons color skopars and some of the slower Zeiss ZMs are perfect Leica lenses. At 50 and 35, I also have 1.4s in my toolkit (summilux ASPH and the Zeiss distagon, respectively). You can’t ignore that fast and APO Leica glass is very tempting. You have to ask if you want something smaller in absolute terms, or relative ones. A mirrorless or dslr 35/1.4 is going to be twice the size of the summilux asph or the Zeiss distagon. And there are very few lenses that compare with the 50 lux period.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom That 35 APO made my eyes bleed when I paid for it. However, I have never owned a bit of gear quite so amazing in 45 years. It's only fault IMV is that the wonderful metal lens cap has a tendency to get loose. There should be a better design!
Hi Matt! I’m wondering what brand camera strap are you using? You remind me of me. I swore that I wouldn’t ever get a Monochrom. Now I’m waiting for one to come in the mail. 😂
Just been in Europe for 6 weeks and shot the hell out of M11/50 lux in all conditions. Use rangefinder only. Amazing experience. Battery never came close to empty even after a 4am to 9pm day in Venice shooting non-stop. The Leica Fotos app was very useful while sitting at cafe selecting keepers which saved time in post. Paired this with a M2 11" ipad/lightroom and external drive 👌
On the advice of a British photographer who jets around in a Canadair and zips around in a sweet ass Porsche I bought the SL. I couldn’t be happier. I enjoy that camera body so much. I mostly use non Leica lenses but with adaptors I get great shots. For walk around I’ve mostly used the Voigtlander Ultron 35mm. I carried that setup throughout Berlin and the shots were fantastic. However I do love street photography and that camera with lenses can be a bit noteable and slightly heavy. Your thoughts on the M11 with the small lenses sounds enticing. 60MP is way more than I need most of the time. I’m more than happy shooting at the 24MP with my SL. The option to shoot at 36MP on the M11 would be the sweet spot IMO. My question. Do you think the M10 with 24MP would be almost as good as the M11? I would be fine with the 1/4000th most of the time and I don’t shoot 1000 pics in a day. I’ve never run out of juice on the SL in a day. Great video. Always informative and as always, please send me some of your models 😅😂
Hey Peter, thanks! Yes as you say the SL is amazing but a little big and obvious for street. Yes the M10 will tick the box or maybe you need something smaller. Stay tuned for more videos from the US and you'll see what I was using.
Best Kit is Leica CL plus Leica Sl2 (3 in March??) This is my kit. I travel with the CL and shoot portraits with the SL. Can use same lenses on both, thank you L mount. They are demonstrably superior to M mount lenses. The M mount time has passed, except for film. That will never pass.
Thanks and nice combo! I love the SL (and CL), see last night's video.. but.. i'm not interested in AF so M mount lenses are still king for me. (For M film, M digital, CL and SL!)
Matt I am so minimalist that I shoot FIlm with my Leicaflex SL and a 50mm Sumicron. Yes I'm a dinosaur. LOL The M11 is not as expensive as I would have thought. Welcome to the US enjoying the good life. You lucky stiff!
Thank you! Leicaflex.. I have one. Such a rewarding camera when you fire the shutter. On a par with the Leica M3 for that..I just wish it was lighter (and had a diopter).. I tend to use the later R bodies with diopter.
Hi Matt I was in Vagus last week. I have a 911 GT3 super car but not a Leica M11 would like one but in my 70's eyes not so good. I am getting a D-Lux 8 from Leica store near me. Good features better interface like the Leica Q great for travel will take it to Sweden & Norway next spring.
The M11 is a fine camera but with the all aluminium body not really apealing to me (keep in mind that only the top is made from brass on the silver Version). Also, the more Pixel a camera has, the more ridiculous the rangefinder becomes. And the evf on m don't work, at least for me. And at the end of the day, it's the photographer anyway
M11 and M11 monochrom with the new summiluxes produce absolute killer files (really close to medium format..) Being able to choose file size makes it an all in one. But as many comments say: You can create great content without spending this kind of money.😅
Thanks and yes with the 35 APO lens these cameras can give a nice 1 lens setup. Agree though, I was happier with my vintage 1931 Leica and the Hasselblad in the US verses these latest and greatest.
I totally agree with you! Black m11 and 35fle, steel rim and 50 cron are one set up, than silver m11 35mm apo and 50mm apo are second and also great is m10r black paint with CV 28mm f2 and 50mm lux black (limited edition) I own all 3 and use them that way. Had 50mm 0.95 and I find it way better on sl system
Hi, There is a time lag between pressing the shutter and the photo taken compared to M10r, M10, M9, and M8 ... similar to SL with an M lens on it. I am able with M10R to focus on moving subjects better than is capable SL 601 with autofocus lenses. For me, this is a primary downside. Funny that nobody is discussing this as a step back. Lecia should change this in the future. Who cares if the M11 camera metering is more accurate than on M10... Would like to hear your opinion. BR Lovrenc
There has been some discussion on various Leica-centric forums and in a few reviews about this increased time lag. The consensus seems to be that it's caused by the M11's new metering system, which reads solely from the sensor; previous models used the sensor for metering only in live-view mode, reverting in rangefinder mode to metering off a light-colored area on the shutter curtain. The downside to sensor-only metering is that the shutter curtain has to stay open all the time so the camera can meter; when you press the release, the curtain has to close and then re-open to start the exposure. Other mirrorless cameras work the same, and the early ones (e.g. Lumix G1) had absolutely horrendous release lag; by now most manufacturers have improved greatly, but it's clear Leica has not kept up with the state of the art in this regard. For people like myself, who got into rangefinder cameras in the first place at least in part because of their shorter lag (vs. mechanical SLRs and then vs. mirrorless cameras) it IS a significant step backward… my guess as to why there hasn't been more of a furor is that for many super-prosperous dilettantes, the M11 is their first rangefinder camera, so they have no idea what they're giving up!
The difference between the M10R and M11 is 3/10th of a second. It’s just the change in shutter sound that makes it feel longer. In real life it’s not noticeable. I have and use both cameras.
I’m more on the compact side, will never use an EVF on a M body because it feel s wrong to me. I like to shoot a Visoflex III for macro work from time to time on my M9-P. Again, this is a super simple mechanical and easy setup. I am still very happy with my M8 and M9-P plus a whole range of vintage Leitz glass from 21 to 135 mm for all my travel photography. Don’t need anything else.
Hey Matt another great youtube post. Been an M shooter since I bought a used M2 in the early 70’s but bought a Barnack IIIa just about 10 years ago and had it cla’d and using and loving it. Looking to get either a 35mm Lens Light Lab 35mm f/2 or 28mm LTM Voitlander 28mm Color Skopar which is coming soon. Between the two which do you prefer for street. Maybe a new youtube topic comparing the options of these two focal lengths for Barnack Leicas. Keep your content flowing 😊
Thanks and great. Yes I mentioned the new 28mm in the recent “M6” video. I’m due to get one to review soon. Stay tuned. (28 vs 35 is personal preference I think).
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Seriously, it brought back memories of trading my Leica X1 for an 'all singing and dancing' Sony. Idiot, what was I thinking . . .
As a daily Leica user, I am not convinced. There are just too many complaints of the M11 freezing up. There are color issues as well. Leica has top notch engineers but not so great software developers. I'm holding out for the M12 which, hopefully will have less features -and less Mp's.
Great review, better friend! What a guy! I didn't use my M3 (!) which I've used since out of box in 1967!! for a long time.. Too cold,t's Canada! We had minus 30c! MY Old Collapsible Summicron 50mm froze up! Yes! Serviced numerous times! So I waited and waited! I suddeny am at odds with lousy metering, a new film for me, HP5+... I prefer SLR! I really do. Always have! The SL is too fluffing big, it's own lenses, gargantuan and obese! Sorry. I will keep my M3, use it more! Leica's prices are a total block. I'm old 79 and retired! That price is better spent on trips (plural) to South Africa.. Family. A modern camera without an electronic screen, a tradgedy! I hated plug in viewfinders, loved the M3,M2 and less the M6TTL. Auto focus from what I've used and seen, a gimmic! Love your images! Great work. Vegas perfect place for fantasy! No clocks, no real newpaper, only lists of "exciting" bodies of mixed gender and money needs! Actually a lot of Fun! Recomened! Bravo!
1:00 The light weight of the M11 is not a benefit, it's a disadvantage in my opinion. Using the mechanical shutter and 60MP with no image stabilization, the low weight of the camera introduces additional shake, a heavier camera has more inertia and can be held more stable at lower shutter speeds. The effects of camera shake are exaggerated at 60MP compared to the M10. For that reason, I would probably go with the silver version M11. 1:30 Battery capacity in the M11 needs to be higher as the M11 always reads out the full sensor, even when you are not in live view (without or without EFV). Two batteries on the M10 are all I need, I can charge on in the charger while I use the other. If I run out of juice on the M11, I need to plug it in for charging and cannot use it during that time - so effectively you are going to buy a dedicated charger for the M11 anyway! Also, do you really trust any USB C outlet to charge directly to a USD9,000 camera? Any surge may destroy your camera... 1:59 The electronic shutter on the M11 really is only useful for still objects with no movement at all as the sensor readout speed is atrocious. Also, in artificial light, you are at risk with banding and other issues. I'm still using the original M10 which I bought used not that long ago. I use it mainly with the 35mm Summilux Asph (not the two latest versions, the one with the square hood). At 24MP and compared to shooting my Leica MP on film, I noticed I cannot get away with the same slow shutter speeds I can hand hold on the MP. That issue would be even worse on the M11. I think if I ever got an M11, I would probably set it to the 36MP setting and be done with it. For street, portrait and documentary photography, NOBODY needs 60MP. For architecture and landscape, the M11 is the wrong tool - I got a Canon 5DsR for that, with the genre relevant lenses that are just not available on M mount (24mm tilt shift, 16-35mm and others). I think rather than buying the M11 or Q3 coming from the M10, the SL3 with the 60MP sensor and IBIS will be a much better choice. Or go directly to Hasselblad with their 100MP option.
Thanks for your detailed comment and observations. Yes 100% agree. I still use my M240 and I'm happy with the 24MP/ photos shot at 1/60. I often think about a smaller M10 but the smaller battery makes me think I'll just stay with my M240 for any street photos. I use the SL most of the time for portraits and the CL sometimes for travel (see other Vegas video). My Q is mainly for weddings but I did a recent video showing that it can be fun with flash.
Well I assume this is what you were referring to as a relatively compact full frame digital rig to use with small lenses such as legacy ltm or m lenses. It probably will do just fine, but frankly I was looking for something costing a tad less than $9000 . We all do not have deep profits or the ability to write expenses off on our Schedule C(which you would if you lived in the US and use the camera in a money-making business, I assume His Majesty’s Revenue service allows similar way to recoup your expense.).
Haha no not this camera! As I say i'd only have one if I won the lottery. The "other" video is coming. ..in a week or so I think looking at the video todo list.
I use nikon z7 ii+summicron 1.4/35mm ASPH (super elmarit 3.5/21mm) by adapter autofocus tzm-02. This set is compact with original leica's color. That's enough
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom yeah. 47 mpx is very good thing for landscape photography. I'll explaine. I do like to take panoramas. But I've been wanting for a long time while Leica include supporting in their application in Q series the 3:1 mode (the same 65:24, hasselblad xpan). I know that series SL has this mode. But I understand too that is marketing game from Leica. The sensors same Q series and M series and Sl. The Leica 's stuff costs nothing to include it in the new update for these cameras. But they have not responded to customer requests for more than 7 years (since the release of the Q series). I know that leica try to force us to buy more expensive their cameras. I couldn’t wait and buy nikon z7 ii. The resolution 47 mpx is enough for panoramic landscape. Every photo has the size 22mpx after the crop by Lightroom.
And using an adapter leica m - M42 with my main tzm-02 I can use the m42 lenses like Carl Zeiss Biotar 75/1,5 or Takumar 50/1,4 or sovet 's lenses (jupiter, helios, industar etc.) And Its wonderful;)
You are right about the M11 in general. Cost aside, there is no reason to use any of the superceded models. And there was no point to the M10-R as a brand new purchase, once the M11 went on sale I see no point in the fully loaded set-ups. As you said, just get an SL instead. Vignetting is very distracting BTW. It's also kind of suffocating. Let the scene breathe!
Thanks, yes the vignetting was OOT for those photos. I applied my usual portrait B&W presets and with the added lens vignetting it looked way to much in retrospect.
And if you find yourself shooting an M11 with an EVF and a 28mm Summilux nearly all the time then you might as well buy a Q2/Q3 and save quite a bit of money!
I “smashed” the Like button, though neither the Noctilux f/0.95, nor the M11, are my cup of tea. I do like a miminalist camera, without a Visoflex, add-on grip, or thumb-thing, but the lens need not be compact, and the tiniest lenses can be annoyinly small. A Summilux-M 50mm ASPH feels quite “natural,” and an APO Summicron-M 75mm ASPH is hefty, but not too much so. This is what works for me. Others’ tastes may vary. The M11, in and of itself, may be OK, but, my budget will not accommodate new M cameras, these days. (2018, when I bought my new M10, was a much better time to be shopping for a new M camera.)
Thanks Rex! Yes note I said "if I win the lottery" :) I won't be buying one either. The M10 gives you most of the Leica benefits, just carry a spare battery (or 2) :)
So the bottom line is that £7K or thereabouts goes on the M11 body and you get rolling shutter problems. Then the idea is to get an SL2S (despite the fact that it’s a brick and far from small) at some £4K. Forget the lenses and we’re already up to £11K. We are now into small secondhand car territory. Don’t get me wrong. I own two Leica cameras and some lenses (all bought used), but this is plain silly IMHO.
M11 is way too good, it has no imperfections, you can't change it in any way to make it look better. It has no character because it has no flaws...no thanks...will keep my grainy M9.
I always hear that, and yet (having worked for an art supply store) I know that skilled painters are picky about their brushes and (now working for a dance company) I know that high-level ballerinas are VERY picky about what pointe shoes they wear. (There's a huge angst throughout the ballet world now because a well-known brand moved its factory from the US to eastern Europe, and many people can no longer get the specific shoes they may have worn for their entire careers!) It's not so much that you couldn't produce "quality art" with something other than your favorite tool... it's more that lots of minor nuisances and inconveniences and accommodations add up to "friction" that distracts you from your creative process. I think Matt has done a video about this...
@@jlwilliams It's good you always hear it. Means there are many who understand and agree. Whoever you believe to be picky is unimportant to me. That's your view and opinion, not everybody's. A camera is a tool, & if you understand how to use one to get what you want, then any half-decent manually operating camera, either analog or digital, will do fine
Don’t worry I was shooting film for all the important photos. Super basic. I just like to share the gear side for those interested. Just shoot what you enjoy.
Putting that cheap small lens on the M11 is similar to having cross ply tyres on the Porsche…. Bizarre decision to shoot Noctilux wide open all the time, what’s gained artistically in doing this for the infinity subjects? I really think you’d benefit from having a proper testing system for your channel, it seems to have got more haphazard, eg recently the selling of all LLL lenses having initially given them positive reviews. Their performance hasn’t dropped, but would have been revealed at the outset with more rigour. The visoflex2 is very useful for 21mm & 90mm lenses and if I need critical framing of 35mm as a glasses wearer. That said it’s off more often than on my M11 now I’ve got the hang of M system. It was really helpful to train me initially, coming from Q2 and other mirrorless cameras in recent years.
Thanks yes the EVF is a perfect stepping stone from Q or SL series cameras. Sorry if you misunderstood my LLL videos. I sold one of the 3 and rave about the remaining 2. The SPII I sold was fun for digital but my heart is in film. I try to buy lenses to use on film cameras (too). As mentioned I had the TT28 with me as I like the look on my own cameras. I didn't know i'd be getting to play with the M11 and just wanted a nice small lens on it to use it like a proper RF camera (as I shoot my various film Leica). Agree there is no point focusing at infinity at 0.95. No image was focused at infinity, The 1 cliff beach shot was stopped down for that reason. (Equally there is no point owning the 0.95 to stop it down. Get a Lux or Cron APO if you prefer 1.4 or f2. I just used the lens that camera with the camera. All good points though.

Sorry to hear. Leica customer service need urgent improvements. That’s terrible service
Minimalist here, from my 1932 Barnack through M3, M6 and M10R. When I bought the M10R two years ago I bought the EVF with it, I used it four or five times then it went back in the box.
Nice Jim! I think we'd get on well
😈😈😈If thou succumbest to the temptations of obscenely rich Americans' private jets and Porsches, verily shalt thou also succumb to their favorite piece of photo jewelry.
I’m aware of the new off sensor meter.
Yes look out for the 35mm Cron video to come! Older smaller ones are better size agreed
And yes to 1/8000 👍🏻
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I was about to purchase a v3 but I read it suffers from focus shift and that will bother me because i shoot at f4-f8 most of the time.
@@airi6591 yea it’s all about the lenses. Ive paired my 50 with the 35 Cron ASPH II. What a great lens.
What an absolutely fantastic video. Never been more keen on going bankrupt for a camera body and lenses. 😂
Haha thanks Jay!
Thanks and yes I’m with you. SL is awesome but a compact M is great for street/ travel
Fully agree with your recommendation on using SL for those hard-to-focus M lenses.
Thanks Wilfred, I see Jon getting one for his 0.95 once he tries one
100% agree SL2s if you want all the bells and whistles
Thanks Peter! And yes SL2S for models 👌🏻
hello matt , thanks for your valuable video ! can i ask who is the manufacturer of the black wrist starp ? thanks daniel
Hi Daniel. sorry someone asked in the last video too. I promise I will find out and detail in the next video.. (as I don't know)
Good video Matt, I bought a M10 and Now a M11, because I what the simple range finder operation, compared with Sony. I also use a Zeiss 50mm F2 with it (plus other lenses).
Great! Yes I still have my M240 but on paper I think I will skip the M10 and wait for the M11
LOL
Thanks!! Yes it will be similar for all electronic shutter cameras
SL2 and SL2s have in-body image stabilization and autofocus too if necessary (e.g. low-light or using longer telephoto lenses), but the M11 has still an edge in terms of sensor rendering
And usb c charging or aux power at least I believe.
Yes I like the SL bodies for models
Aside from the hype: As you said many times before, the lens makes the picture, not the camera body. I couldn't care less about the Sony 60Mp sensor, the battery lasting a 1000 images (when was the last time you shot 1000 images in one setting?!) and the charging cable like on my phone. Im also not happy about the many reviews stating the freezing issues and other recurrent software glitches. This camera isn't ready yet.
All fair comments Ralph. I like the reduced weight but yes it won’t make me better portraits. Hence I still use older Leica models, SL, CL, M240, Q
Yes! I’ve asked Voigtlander to make a super compact 50 for us..
Thx
See my old EVF video. The same “rules”/ benefits apply.
One of the issues I have with M11 is the excessive magenta Lr gifts it when we import the files. How did you find it?
Yes! My presets reduce it and you’ll see me compare the M11 files to the Q3 in a video soon.
Great! Yes digital is easy but many do the reverse, starting with M11 say, then film next!
Whoa, that purple fringing on the Noctolux reminds me of when I shot with the old Canon EF 85 1.8.
Yes I think it is more common on fast glass. It goes once you stop down as I remember
I find myself happiest with a silver M11 + 35 APO Summicron. Just small and light enough to carry along the whole week while on travel. I can always use the LCD for close-focus work when necessary.
Great combo! Yes I think the APO is worth the slight increase in size for all the performance and functionality it offers. Excellent lens!
I have that combo as well. Love it.
Thanks, yes great tip. Normally my models are not moving so I never see it.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I photograph a lot of dancers, so I know!😄
"We're having none of that fancy pant's oooohhh look at me Leica stuff in this gravel pit" My father used to say, "You'll have Nikon and like it" It was tough in those days, good job I didn't tell him about my MP then.🤫🤫
Haha love that. Yes film Leica are great!
Yes! I use any size lens, as needed, for portraits, smaller lenses for travel.
I have a black M11 and the 35APO and a Summilux 50. I will add a 75 APO in due course. That will do me. It's a brilliant camera.
Very nice!!
Haha nice! Ah I forget.. someone else asked me so I show it on the screen written in the Q-Q2-Q3 video. Begins with B... Barton?
Just been in Europe for 6 weeks and shot the hell out of M11/50 lux in all conditions. Use rangefinder only. Amazing experience. Battery never came close to empty even after a 4am to 9pm day in Venice shooting non-stop. The Leica Fotos app was very useful while sitting at cafe selecting keepers which saved time in post. Paired this with a M2 11" ipad/lightroom and external drive 👌
Good to hear someone not complaining about freezing. Or are you just pulling the battery and ignoring it?

Sounds like it pretty much doesn't get better than this 😀 looking forward to Q3 video.
Thanks Thomas! Yes more videos from the trip to follow!
Have you used any Nikon hotshoe flashlight with your M11? Thanks!
I've not but I use Nikon mount flash on all my Leica bodies (film and digital) and they work no issues. (See my Leica flash video)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom yes, did watch that one, that's why I know u use Nikon hotshoe flashes. Planning to get a M11 soon.....
Leica M11, too high price, no built-in EVF, no grip, so no thanx, I am very happy with my Sony Cameras which have the same sensor as the M11 !!!
Ha yes Sony is better value!
Matt I am so minimalist that I shoot FIlm with my Leicaflex SL and a 50mm Sumicron. Yes I'm a dinosaur. LOL
The M11 is not as expensive as I would have thought.
Very nice! If you'd ever like a workshop and photos of your nice car just let me know :)
Yes I’d be happy with a 24MP with USBC and good battery. I don’t mind lightweight
Yes! Great. Yes I think we like a similar setup. Agree for 0.95 on SL!
..the next video talks more about using the M11 with small lenses ;)
Interesting, I’ve not heard this and haven’t shoot them all side by side. Hopefully new firmware will “fix” the lag
Compact - see video out later today ;)
This is a fun review. I use a 40mm Voigtlander Heliar with my new M11, or my M4 with a 35mm summicron v3..
Thanks and niiiice! I love the 40mm Heliar.. it's so good. ..and yes the older 35mm Crons are a nice size. Video to come on one of those
Hey Matt another great youtube post.
OMG I can hear terrible sighs from all those who traded their beloved M's for a slick SL, now that you said it could be a dreadful mistake. . .
Noo! See the small print. The SL series are no doubt king for portraits and fast glass but for a small walkaround M cameras are still king*
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Seriously, it brought back memories of trading my Leica X1 for an 'all singing and dancing' Sony. Idiot, what was I thinking . . .
Speaking of fully loaded I would love to see you review the Tri Elmar lens! :-)
I did! I reviewed the MATE. See that video 👍🏻
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thank You!
Sorry but the M11 is a half backed camera. Lots of reliability issues. Not to mention shutter lag. Hopefully M12 will be a flawless camera like M10.
Yes or the M11P..
As a daily Leica user, I am not convinced. There are just too many complaints of the M11 freezing up. There are color issues as well. Leica has top notch engineers but not so great software developers. I'm holding out for the M12 which, hopefully will have less features -and less Mp's.
Yes understood. I hear you.
Don’t the fully loaded cameras spend more time in the bag or show cabinet ?
They are the most popular setup I see for my model workshops but I know that’s a tiny percentage of Leica users.
Recomened! Bravo!
Thanks and yes +1 for the M3!
I'm the realist, M camera with 50 Sumicron, no grip, no case, no EVF, tiny light silk sling.
Nice, yes minimal is good
Well I assume this is what you were referring to as a relatively compact full frame digital rig to use with small lenses such as legacy ltm or m lenses.
Sounds like a nice setup! When I tested the Z6 I managed to get a similar look to my M240.
And there was no point to the M10-R as a brand new purchase, once the M11 went on sale
I see no point in the fully loaded set-ups.
I would take an M10R before I take an M11. But that’s just me. 😊
@@carlosmcse There's always one! 😋😄
@@Biosynchro Not one. Many. Especially the ones regretting their M11 purchase. Got one right in the comments below.
Unsure will this be a big project for u Matt..."Which lenses are excellent, v. good, or good, for M11?"
Ha yes that is quiet a topic. Use old lenses if you want a less digital look, use APO lenses if you want the most from the 60MP sensor.
Nice wheels and wings!!!!
Yes! I felt very fortunate
Going to stay with My Leica M10 R for a while longer....
Yes I think the M10 series cameras still offer great value and the R is closer to the 11 with the higher MP.
This is my best camera
It’s great for travel/ street
I’d rather buy the best glass. Oh wait, I did. I’ll upgrade when the M12 has ibis.
Haha nice :)
And if you find yourself shooting an M11 with an EVF and a 28mm Summilux nearly all the time then you might as well buy a Q2/Q3 and save quite a bit of money!
Thanks Simon! Makes sense but wait for my M11-Q3 video soon! I cover this
I “smashed” the Like button, though neither the Noctilux f/0.95, nor the M11, are my cup of tea.
Wait ‘til you see Leica M11 Monochrom
See my last M11 video. There is some overlap with this video but the M11M is featured
😊
Thanks!
Thanks Martin, yes I did say it makes sense if I won the lottery. I’ll be staying with my old M240 for Ms for now.
If you love M11 now, you should love M11 Monochrom even more 😅
Haha, only for street/ travel ..and yes I should but I’m weird. I like converting RGB to black and white!
We all have our own preferances ^^
M9 still best 👍
In good light, yes 👌🏻
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Agreed. The light must be nice. In bad light the M11 should be the best
Amazing colors! Eyeing a local used one in great shape for $1750 USD….. still out of budget for now
Leica M digital small lens minimalist kind of guy.
Great!
Welcome to California.
Thank you!! It was a great surprise after being asked to fly out to teach
You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave... 😽
M11 is way too good, it has no imperfections, you can't change it in any way to make it look better. It has no character because it has no flaws...no thanks...will keep my grainy M9.
Haha thanks! Yes I like the old M9. See those videos.
What were you wrong about?
See the previous M11 video* I wasn't overly impressed
Difficult not to talk nicely about his camera when he invites you with a private plane 😅
Haha he had multiple cameras so in the next video I compare his Q3 vs M11. He knows I tell him the truth, we get on well.
Minimal by day, fully-loaded at night.
Niiice! Love that :) Yes the minimal setup suits lots of light
The world is distorted nothing is straight…
Ha very true!
people with little to no artistic ability concern themselves more with their cameras than actually creating quality art
I just like to share the gear side for those interested
Don’t worry I was shooting film for all the important photos. Super basic. I just like to share the gear side for those interested. Just shoot what you enjoy.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom what makes you think I'm worried?
lol it doesn't even have auto focus
Haha yes don’t buy Leica M cameras if you want features! :)
Difficult to focus. Hard pass.
Thanks, yes M cameras are not for everyone
