Hi everyone! This one was real fun to make, our last Devilman video (specifically on crybaby) was "removed" so I worked really hard to make this one appealing to this website while still staying true to the source. I personally went hard on this one, read all the manga, watched all the OVA's and rewatched crybaby and even dove into some other Nagai works to get a better picture of the man behind the story. Devilman is REALLY awesome, so hopefully this video helps people pull a samurai jack and go back to check it out. Thanks so much for watching!
    -Mike

I thought "Devilman Cry baby" was utter garbage. I hated the art style and I thought it was nihilistic for shock value only. Not a fan of that remake or "Beserk" 2012. I love your work though. You had me at "Legend of The Overfiend." I have not found another anime channel who covers the golden and silver age of manga and Anime. Any chance of doing 3x3 eyes? or X?

@@xblade149 I said Devilman Crybaby. I have the original Devilman OVA's along with Legend of the Overfiend and 90's Beserk. I did not care for the crybaby remake of Devilman. They went the horror route among other things when it came to the deaths of some of the main characters in terms of not making feel anything when they met a shocking end. In the original when a main character got capped you felt it. Also the animation style which was hideous was done that way because they felt that cartoony style wouldn't trigger so many brittle souls when graphic violence was shown unlike the original that went balls out and didn't give a fuck. So yes, I hate Devilman Crybaby and for many good reasons.

I really think that Devilman deserves the title of "classic." Not only is it a good story and poignant, but it is also a great cautionary tale. You can derive several messages and themes. One theme that I surmised would be that nothing good comes from war and being divisive. We are all humans at the end of the day and in times of strife, we should unify and not fight. As the legend, Bob Marley, once said, "We don't need no trouble. What we need is love!"

This anime messed up my perspective on humanity for like 3 weeks or more, I've watched other anime's that changed the way I looked at the world but this anime seriously just had me oddly hooked. It was so weird but I couldn't look away. I even caught myself saying "WOW if this isn't 2020 in a nutshell then I don't know what is" After watching this masterpiece that I've been sleeping on for so long I re-realized that humans aren't just good and bad, black and white sides but mixed together in a messy pot. Paint mixed together that shouldn't have that created some kind of ugly but sometimes beautiful color. History is messy because Humans are a messy bunch. We start something but can't always finish it causing long overdue dates. The fear and unknown as mentioned is our greatest weapon on others and our selves, which in turn will probably destroy man kind in the near future.

That was good brother. I’d be interested in diving into the symbolism of demons historically, and also examining how it seems like Devilman really problematizes the notion of the other, since its seems like the other we fear is already in us, and our inability to reconcile ourselves with that other is what leads into a downward spiral of viciousness, warfare, bloodbath, fear, and self-destruction. I’m not typically a fan of heavy description in videos, but I think in this case you did a really good job of weaving description with analysis so that the video itself felt to me like it was right on the border of being so information dense that I have to pause, rewind, and really think about what’s being said, and conversational enough to let me just glide through. If you were intentionally trying to hit that sweet spot, then I think you hit it well. And I, for one, definitely enjoyed this video. It made me go from “Devilman is a cool show/series/franchise that other people like to talk about but I probably won’t ever watch,” to “Yeah, I’m probably gonna make a video on this in the near future,” and that is probably the highest compliment that I can pay to a fellow YTuber.

When I watched the first few episodes of Devilman Crybaby, I realized that it really seemed more like an allegory for puberty. Akira was a late bloomer who was still super emotional about stuff, but after witnessing and experiencing tragedy after tragedy, he toughens up and allows himself to be consumed by his urges and his lust and his thirst for blood all while having this massive responsibility dropped on him.

the original Toei anime wasn't made to be a infantilized version of the manga. Toei hired Go Nagai to create a demon-themed superhero concept for their next anime series and then Nagai started the Devilman manga after the anime was already being made. That's why the anime is not only more kid-friendly but is also a completely different story, many the core concepts of the manga did not even existed when the anime was on it's early production stage.

Saw the first two ova's on vhs in the early 90's as one of the very first few anime I laid eyes on, and holy shit it left an impact. I still remember some of the imagery nearly 30 years later, I even picked up on a callback in berserk volume 34 where one of the demon army members looks really similar to the demon bird lady from devilman. Influential is an understatement, devilman was a cornerstone of storytelling and it still resonates today. Cheers for the video guys your channel is fantastic and I share almost all your videos with my friends👌

Just one thing Devilman started as a request from Toei to Nagai to create together a child friendly superhero version of Mao Dante, nagai's recently cancel manga at that time. Because Dante was a giant monster Toei decided for devilman to be one too so that's why the anime is how it is

devilman is truly a mind boggling anime. I contemplate every night on the final episode of the netflix adaptation because it goes into various topics that someone who is quite religious as me ponders about on a regular bases.
in the last episode it starts of of by depicting Satan as this truly magnificent and behuing that radiates light, not the common devil with pitch forks and horns. This is very interesting to me because in the bible it states that the devil is the most magnificent of the angels to have been created amongst the others.
"Satan" then goes into explaining the beginning of the world. How it was dominated by devil's and demons. (my theory is that when Satan and he's disciples were cast down from heaven they perhaps settled on earth and still roam the earth to this day). he then goes into explaining how most of the mythological creatures such as ogres, vampires, werewolves etc... might of actually be devilman who fused with humans after god destroyed the world to get rid of him and the other demons being that they were just shapeless entities.
this baffles me every time I go on about a little tangent in my head about these things and how the creator of this show went so much into depth about this whole situation.

I remember when I was showing Devilman Crybaby to my Catholic semi-love interest who worked up the nerve to see something really gory and depraved if it had a happy ending, and I said "eh... it's kind of left up to interpretation". I mean... sure, there was a demon war that killed many many people and the people seemed to be out for blood and turning against each other, and the hero died, but the puppetmaster behind all this did regret their actions and their victory was ultimately hollow.... okay, I just didn't want to tell her outright that it didn't, I wanted to feed into her nerve to watch it.

Good vid, thanks. But (sorry) this isn't really "ahead of it's time" so much as a product of the time. The 70s were weird on the heels of the late 60's psychedelia and social angst. I'm a kid of the 70s and yeah, this feels right about where our cultural angst was at the time (in the US at least). I feel for younger Generations that came up under the regressive social mores of a society trying to bring the 50s back starting with groups like PMRC and rolling into retro pop shows like Mad Men. At least Heavy Metal the movie was cranked out before the cultural regression took full hold. Maybe this is the real reason people should resent Boomers: "I had fun when I was young so I know first-hand you shouldn't" attitude. 😅
